Chuck Todd, Newly Minted Web Guru: “Adding a Server Would Fix It in a Heartbeat!”

Utter fail
Media • Views: 23,376

YouTube

It’s clear that the launch of healthcare.gov has not gone well, but one positive thing has come out of it: the hilarious spectacle of White House reporters who suddenly turn into web programming gurus.

For example, here’s MSNBC’s Chuck Todd, helpfully offering his professional opinion that if extreme traffic is really to blame for the problems, all they have to do is “add a server” and everything will be fixed “in a heartbeat.”

This is me, shaking my head.

And then, to make the media’s tech fail even more ridiculous, we have the New York Times making the absolutely absurd claim that the healthcare.gov web application contains 500 million lines of code: Contractors See Weeks of Work on Health Site.

According to one specialist, the Web site contains about 500 million lines of software code. By comparison, a large bank’s computer system is typically about one-fifth that size.

I did a double take when I read this paragraph. For comparison, the entire Windows 7 operating system contains about 50 million lines of code. The ACA website is a government project so there’s undoubtedly some middleware bloat involved, but half a billion lines of code is simply an absurd estimate. That’s either a typo, or the Times’ “specialist” is playing a prank on them.

And Chuck Todd is an idiot. Throwing new hardware at a problem often makes things worse. Someone should private message him some other terms like “load balancer”, “master-slave databases”, and “shards” just to see how he translates that into GOP talking points.

From the systems engineering perspective, what’s got to be the real problem is the really high number of near-real-time back end interfaces that this thing has to support. You’ve got multiple interfaces for each of the states to their government data sources, and God knows what kind of support the federal guys are getting from state agencies in states that have been trying to sabotage the whole process from day one. Then there are the interfaces to commercial insurers, who at least have some incentive to cooperate. All these are mission critical, and you’re confronted with a big startup traffic spike that won’t be repeated.

Earlier today I heard someone say there are up to 50 different database tie-ins to the ACA system. I’m pretty sure that is an unprecedented number of info sources to have to work together to calculate these policy costs.

Are all of these databases written in easily read languages to the ACA system or do some of them need to be read and then converted/transposed so they can tie in?

And I’ve only messed with a couple fairly simple web stores relying on maybe three databases and one thing out of sync with one of the databases and errors start popping up. 50? I see problems.

Add in politics and turf warfare and well, good luck.

30 person brawl erupts at Chuck E. Cheese over prize tickets

Two people were arrested after a large brawl at a Chuck E. Cheese’s restaurant in Lincoln Park on Sunday.

At least 30 people were involved in a brawl, which started among a group of people waiting in line for prizes at the Chuck E. Cheese’s at 1830 W. Fullerton Av., around 7:10 p.m. Sunday.

Police said three adults suffered minor injuries in the brawl, but no one had to go to the hospital. No children were hurt.

“I saw a couple people, ladies, fighting. … They started fighting about tickets from the Chuck E. Cheese, and I saw one lady was bleeding,” said eyewitness Felipe Brito.

Two adults were arrested.

Shambreya Barfield, 21, was charged with one misdemeanor count of battery. Trevell Washington, also 21, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery.

One of my most vivid school-related nightmares was before I took my qualifying exams.

I dreamt I was watching a friend take hers (which, closed door, so you can’t, but hey, dreams!) and realized that all the figures had gone missing from my presentation (and our quals involved a 30 minute presentation on your thesis proposal before the 2 hour Q&A on whatever the hell the committee felt like). And I had about 45 minutes to try and reconstruct them.

I’m pretty certain I woke up in a cold sweat from that one.

Some dudebro at ‘Reason’ [Home of the Dudebros] tied the Redskins name controversy to the controversy over a UK team (of some sport or another) whose nic is the Yids, and says

The simple fact is this—neither the name of the Redskins nor the tag Yid Army has any racial intent. On the contrary, when fans holler “Come on you Redskins!” or “We are the Yids!,” they are making completely harmless, even positive statements, about themselves and the team they support.

…and says people who take offense at such things are getting in the way of Real Concerns, namely Dudebro Concerns.

Once, censorship was primarily concerned with obliterating certain ideas, be it communism, fascism, or whatever. Now it has bigger ambitions: to blacklist not just certain ways of thinking but also certain forms of chatter and banter between friends and teammates. It wants to colonise not just our ideological universes, but our personal lives and friendships, our informal discussions, our very self-identification.

Look over at the sidebar to the right. In Trending in Opinion column, there’s this gem:

ObamaCare’s failure to launch and the hubris of one party rule

I’m not linking to it. Just wanted to point out that the author of the piece probably had no problem with one party rule when it was the GOP from 2001 to 2007.

Plus there’s the added fun of thinking the Dems are one-party rulers after the GOP just got done shutting down the government.

Fox News. Oy.

Because it is so worth quoting in its entirety and I didn’t think it appropriate to take the majority of the article for my Pages Post:

I have tried to live a life of principles. These principles have been shaped by mi familia, my community and my country. In fact, it is my dedication to these principles which has lead me to the law in the first place and has guided me to becoming a judge. These values are simple. I believe that justice demands fairness. It demands careful and intelligent probing of evidence. And above all else, justice can only be served without prejudice toward race, color, creed or whom you choose to love.

These principles have served as the bedrock upon which my rulings have been made. They are also my driving force. That is why I can no longer be a member of the Republican Party. For too long, the Republican Party has been at war with itself. Rational Republican beliefs have given way to character assassination. Pragmatism and principle have been overtaken by pettiness and bigotry. Make no mistake. I have not left the Republican Party. It left me.

I cannot tolerate a political party that demeans Texans based on their sexual orientation, the color of their skin or their ecomonic status. I will not be a member of a party in which hate speech elevates candidates for higher office rather than disqualifying them. I cannot place my name on the ballot for a political party that is proud to destroy the lives of 100s of 1000s of federal workers over the vain attempt to repeal a law that will provide health care to millions of people throughout our country.

That is why I am announcing that I am now running for re-election as a Democratic candidate for County Court of Law 11 in the 2014 elections. My principles have led me to the Democratic Party. I can only hope that more people of principle will follow me. If you believe these values are your values, then I respectfully ask you to join me and let’s work together to keep dignity, fairness and respect for rule of law in our county courts

Secret probe spreads to five Wisconsin counties
Possible violations during recall elections among issues

A former top-level assistant U.S. attorney has been appointed a special prosecutor in a burgeoning, secret investigation into a wide variety of state issues, including possible campaign violations during the recent recall elections, multiple sources said.

Francis Schmitz — who spent nearly 30 years as a federal prosecutor and was once a finalist for U.S. attorney in Milwaukee — is leading the widespread John Doe probe, according to sources.

Overseeing the case is Kenosha County Circuit Judge Barbara A. Kluka, who has been used by Milwaukee County judicial officials in past John Doe cases.

With no understanding that the illegality or legality of abortion does little to change the actual birthrate —only the maternal death rate.

There was the guy arguing that since the woman chose to have sex, the fetus’s right to life trumps her right to bodily autonomy.

I can choose to sign up as an organ donor, but that still doesn’t give them the right to force me onto the operating table if they find I’m a match for someone.

My understanding is that the UK team nic Yids has nothing to do with Jews or Yiddish, that it’s just an unfortunate coincidence, like the “Chink’s” sandwich shop in Philadelphia.

Actually, the name “Chink’s” references the founder’s nickname. Which he got because he was a white guy who looked Chinese.

Yeah, it takes two to make a baby, I fail to see how the woman choosing to have sex automatically takes away her rights. Should we cut a man’s balls off because he has sex with lots of women? No? Okay then.

League Of The South President Michael Hill Defines Southern People As White

The show, hosted by James Edwards, aired on the 15th of this month. The focus of the first half of the show was on the League’s anti-immigration rallies (aka “Southern demographic displacement”) in GA and the upcoming one in TN. Then at 10:31, Edwards asked Hill for a general description of the mission of the League. In response, Hill said:

We are for the survival, well-being, and independence of the Southern people. And when we say ‘the Southern people,’ we mean white Southerners. We are an ethno-nationalist movement and we want a free and independent South for our people, as our homeland. That’s pretty much what we are fighting for.

Then why get into immigration protests?

Now we’re doing the demographic displacement demonstrations to help with that first thing I said, the very survival of our people because if we don’t control the land, the soil with our blood, then we don’t have a place to live, we don’t have a place to work, we don’t have a place to worship, and raise our children. So the survival of our people [white Southerners] on our land is the first thing that we’re concerned about. And that’s why we’re having these rallies against our demographic displacement. But in the end, we want a free and independent South. We’re Southern nationalists; and as I said, we want an ethno, we’re ethno-nationalists, and we want an ethnic state for Southerners here.

“Woman chooses to have sex”

I so love that statement. I’d love to know what constitutes consent in the minds of some of these men. Marriage? Making eye-contact?

I have to add to this. Any women who has a male partner knows, if she doesn’t want to have children or more children, birth control is the only option. If she chooses to not have sex, she would probably not have the man in her life for long. And WHY SHOULD SHE have to deny herself sex in the first place?

Between that and the surfeit of “I’m conservative for smaller government unless it involves a woman’s vagina” and “it’s murder but don’t make me think about how this would extrapolate out to investigation of miscarriages”, I am quite happy to retreat to my happy place here, where you people are all sane and we can all agree that we need to increase availability of contraception and support for women after birth as ways to reduce the abortion rate.

Instead of seeing the conservatives who want to ban abortion also bitching about programs like TANF.

You shouldn’t insult 4chan like that.

Seriously, reddit can’t even get to that level.

Reddit has decent pockets, mostly smaller non-default subreddits. Finding them is the problem.

Let’s review this Obamacare Roll-out.
I’m not a web guru like Chuck Todd but I have some experience in Technology as a subject matter expert in one little corner of the Tech.
I propose this US Government. You can’t comb through 500 5 million lines of code and fix this in a timely matter. If it was me ( Please weigh in on this Charles )
I would rent space on the Amazon Cloud so that resources could be adjusted to demand. I would use an Oracle database in the backend and hire some programmers to write the forms to interact with options and costs. I would feel better using the security and speed of Oracle over whatever the hell is crashing in the weeds.

Nah, Spurs got the nic because they had a sizeable number of Jewish supporters, and both Jewish and non-Jewish supporters took it on as a badge of honour - not uncontroversially, as you can imagine

Check out the list of “approved” sites above the banned list. Reddit’s supposed to be the new hipster wave, but the approved sites are all ultra-establishment media corporations.

It seems like you’re putting down Reddit as a whole due to a single sub-Reddit’s rules. This banned site list is for r/politics, not Reddit in general.
The sub-reddit’s mods are a problem, not the concept of Reddit, where anyone can create sub-reddits like we can create pages here.

Any of us could create r/PoliticsSansBans over there right now and start posting articles.
