Ars Technica’s Crazy in-Depth Review of OS X 10.9 Mavericks

Excuse me while I tech out
Technology • Views: 19,757

Apple released the latest version of Mac OS today, code-named Mavericks, and after installing it I feel like I’m at a highly dangerous, potentially lethal surfing spot with insanely gigantic waves. (OK, not rly.) Good thing I read John Siracusa’s incredibly in-depth article on this new operating system before getting my shorts wet: OS X 10.9 Mavericks: The Ars Technica Review.

Mavericks is the first California-themed release of OS X, named after “places that inspire us here in California,” according to Craig Federighi, who says this naming scheme is intended to last for at least the next 10 years. The pressure is on for Mavericks to set a new direction for the Mac platform.

According to Apple, Mavericks has a dual focus. Its first and most important goal is to extend battery life and improve responsiveness. Secondarily, Mavericks aims to add functionality that will appeal to “power users” (Apple’s words), a group that may be feeling neglected after enduring two releases of OS X playing iOS dress-up.

Is that enough for Mavericks to live up to its major-release version number and to kick off the next phase of OS X’s life? Let’s find out.

I’ve been hesitating for the last hour or so about installing 10.9 on our MBP. I normally wait for a 10.9.X patch, but I have to admit: the free thing is slowly getting to me.

Should I do it?

Republicans ask John Fucking McAfee, murder suspect, to advise House on Obamacare.

videocafe.crooksandliars.com

“Follow-up emails indicated that the plans were scrapped after House Republicans refused to pay McAfee’s travel expenses.

“McAfee told CNBC that he did not think it was at all odd that lawmakers would ask him for help with the website.

“I promise you this cannot be fixed without at least scrapping the front-end processing, which is more than half of the systems,” he insisted. “Seriously, if it were me and I were running this and I had been asleep in a hospital for two years and woke up to this mess, I would say OK, throw it out and start over. But start over in the right way.”

This is a guy who fried his brain with drugs a long time ago—obviously.

Because someone who programs antivirus solutions (poorly) is automatically an expert on high demand, database-driven website design.

That presumes he’s even had anything to do with programming in years. I find it unlikely that he’s been doing too much coding in recent times.

NM Supreme Court to hear 2 hours of argument on legality of same-sex marriage tomorrow at 9am. It’s gonna be telecast and should be pretty interesting. Unfortunately I have a trial tomorrow at 9am :(

What that article makes me want is for the clerk, say in Madison, to start issuing marriage licenses because to deny them is against the US constitution which overrides the state constitutional amendment against it. Then we’ll see something interesting ;)

Nah, it’s quiet here on that front. Realistically we have too many other battles going on with Scooter trying to gut the state. Real world, I hope the investigation into that little bastard’s recall “win” finally nails him. Then we can get back to work on things like marriage equality.

Fight down here still looks stalemated. Downstate and African-American opposition to gay marriage makes it unlikely to pass in Illinois this year.

It’s remarkable how much progress on this issue has happened since the 2004 election when the Bush administration shrewdly used opposition to it to get their base out for re-election. Anyhow, would love to see the anti-gay marriage law repealed here in Va. It was put on the ballot in a deceptive way IIRC. By voting no, you’d be voting against banning gay marriage or something like that. I forget the details since it was a while back.

re: #25 SpaceJesus

When it passed the state senate it looked like it would. But opposition to it is pretty firm downstate and a coalition of ministers has put pressure on state reps with a large number of African-Americans in their district.

What investigation is that?

It’s not completely in the open but there are at least 5 counties under an investigation by a former US Attorney into details surrounding the recall. The 5 counties are all in the south east corner of the state where the Republican hold is strongest. Beyond that all I have is rumors that I won’t repeat. There were articles very recently in the Journal-Sentinel if you want to go there and see.

2. Blago’s roommate is his ego. It takes up so much space there’s no room for another person.

The ego has to go into a separate cell block.

That’s when they stock the shelves. On top of that the place is nearly empty so they’ll get every thing they’ll need.

Rachel Maddow chides Rick Santorum for meddling in Virginia governor’s race: ‘You are a vulture’

“I’m not in the business of giving political advice, but oh my God, Rick Santorum, you are a vulture,” Maddow exclaimed, slamming her hand on her desk. “You are trying to pry one last cent for yourself out of the dying spasms of that poor man’s campaign. You’re rifling the dead guy’s pockets to see if he still had his wallet on him when he croaked.”

But Cuccinelli’s descent into becoming “political carrion,” Maddow argued, has been so thorough that he has been reduced to appearing in front of his voter base with conservative figures like radio host Mike Huckabee and reality show stars Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, while state Republicans are so convinced he is going to lose to Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe that they are moving their financial resources down the election ticket so as to avoid losing more races.

Sometimes the truth hurts. Cucci’s campaign has crashed and burned ahead of the finish line, and some might argue never really got above the ground at all. He’s so desperate to win at this point that he’s invoking the name of Hillary Clinton as some sort of hex on McAuliffe’s campaign.

I dunno, man.

It’s hard to sort the liberal bias from the “distaste for men who feel entitled to legislate what women can do with their bodies, and are totally down with creepy-ass old-school patriarchy such that they can stand to be in a room with the Duggars without going on a vasectomy spree bias” or the “holy fucking shit these guys really think they’re doing God’s work such they get to constantly lie to get what they want bias.”

Maybe we’re misunderstanding and this is actually considered legit and acceptable practice amongst conservatives, though.

To fundraise on your neighbor’s behalf without actually providing commitment that the money will go to that stated purpose.
