Music: Bium Bium Bambalo by Sigur Ros
Lyrics translated from Icelandic

Bíum bíum bambaló,
Bambaló and dillidillidó
My little friend I lull to rest
But outside, a face looms at the window

When the mighty mountains
Fill your chest with burning desire,
I will play the langspil
And soothe your mind

Bíum bíum bambaló,
Bambaló and dillidillidó
My little friend I lull to rest
But outside, a face looms at the window

When the cruel storms rage
And the dark blizzard crouches above,
I shall light five candles
And drive away the winter shadows

Well yeah, but the whole thing’s an utter mess, we must immediately abandon all hope and throw ourselves at the mercy of the GOP with a proposal for a one year delay of the individual mandate, so that we might not look like we’re supporting the White House’s total denial!

It’s why I’m a gamer. Journeying through a fantasy land or just playing God to a bunch of simulated humans is a great way to decompress. Despite what the moral guardians always say, violent video games do not lead to violent people. But they can do a lot to defuse people before they become violent.

14 lawhawk  Wed, Oct 23, 2013 6:17:22pm

No matter how gorgeously shot these videos are - and this one is truly gorgeous and amazing, it simply doesn’t compare to actually being there and feeling a herd of bison running from a grizzly or feeling the power of the geysers erupting, or the smell of sulfur and the heat of the mudpots and superheated pools.

Oh, and this is a national park - something that the GOP wouldn’t mind exploiting and turning a profit off of. They’re not beyond defiling the memory of Teddy Roosevelt, who helped establish the National Park System, and Yellowstone in particular.

From the article, it wasn’t even physical (e.g., a shot from his own pepper spray). It was mental suffering caused by ‘death threats’.

Yeesh.

Anything outside deporting all illegal immigrants is unacceptable to the GOP base. The sooner their politicians discover that and stop pandering to these idiots for votes and stop trying to “out-conservative” each other, the better off our country and legislatures will be.

One last comment till I hit the hay; I agree - the immigration issue could very well be the “last straw” that leads the Tea Party wing to separate itself once and for all from the GOP proper, especially if the TP’ers by-and-large fail in their efforts to “primary the RINO’s” come next year.

I’m kind of torn when it comes to this. One one hand, as a Dem, I’m kind of hoping the internal insanity will ensue until after next year’s elections so that the TPGOP will continue tearing itself to shreds (and hopefully ensure more Democratic votes in the process). On the other hand, though, we need a viable two-party political system - one party and a circus/freak show doesn’t count, not to mention that even with the party at the lowest support/approval ever, some of the nuts will still find their way into places of power where they could inflict more harm on the Republic…

The GOP leadership’s talking immigration even though the TPers want them to talk nothing but defund/delay until at least January, when they want them to again make a play at shutting down the government and threatening default unless the President agrees to their demands. They seem convinced that this time it will work, because there’s red-stater Dems who are getting antsy over negative press about Healthcare.gov in an election year.

Yeah, I imagine January will be the real beginning of the GOP civil war. The TPers will spend the next two months beating the drums and declaring that this time, the GOP sees it to the death or else pay the price. The leadership’s response will be that they will not destroy the country in an election year simply so the Tea Party can claim some twisted form of “victory.”

The move to immigration by the GOP seems to be a pretty smart one. Gets the country’s mind off the shutdown and how close we came to default, let’s the wingnuts cry about something else for awhile, and clears room on the deck for griping about the ACA’s stumbles. If they spent from now until January obsessing about the ACA and continuing the defund/delay business, Dems could argue to the electorate next year that the GOP destroyed any chance at real immigration reform to pursue their white whale.

Further, given that Obama was poised to make an issue out of it, Issa’s bill can be promoted as an olive branch and a proposal something both parties can live with. Establish the debate parameters early, in such a way as leave extremists out of position.

I’ll have to wait until those with more time for legalise have chewed through Issa’s bill, but being a hardened cynic by this point, I don’t expect that the House will successfully pass a bill unless Boehner finally drops the whole “Hastert Rule” BS and agrees to hash out a deal with Democrats that could pass with strong bipartisan support.

Yeah. It’s a smart move assuming the GOP moderates have the stones to escalate the civil war by aligning with the Democrats and dropping the Hastert Rule.

But they don’t have the stones. It’s all talk. By the time the bill gets amended enough to gain any TP support it’s going to be nothing but electrons and alligators.

Boehner could simply take the looser view of the Hastert Rule taken by Dennis Hastert and make sure a majority of Republicans supported a given bill. That would work for this piece of legislation.

Even allowing for that, putting forward a bill is the right move for the House leadership. It won’t stop Obama from giving speeches about immigration, but it will keep him from attacking Republicans in those speeches, at least for a while. It makes the issue more of a positive one in terms of media coverage and that is also important.

Pretty much. Any bill that could pass on GOP votes alone will not go very far in the Senate. And like the budget, the GOP will refuse to allow a conference committee be convened to bash together a unified bill, on the grounds that it considers the Senate bill “insufficient” or some other term meant to convey the belief that anything short of “DEPORT’EM ALL!” is too lenient.

So, I go to order some stuff on Amazon and I discover that just two days ago they changed their “Free Shipping”, including raising the amount needed to order from $25 to $35.

It’s this type of inflation which is missed by so many “inflation” estimations, and why CPI adjustments can never really keep up with the real changes in our economy.

Here’s the bottom line for living in a city in the US in the year 2013: you need to be earning at least $100k/yr if you want the American lifestyle (house, two kids, two cars, basic medical care, etc.)

It’s quite possible to live on less, but not only is the “aspirational” lifestyle then beyond your reach but also the notional American lifestyle. A single person, if they ignore health services for themselves, can live quite frugally on about $30k/yr. Just hope you don’t get ill.

It’s why Issa didn’t stand with the rest of the TPers and voted for the spending bill. There are so many people in his district who work for the gov’t, contractors, or the military that are hurt by the TP shenanigans even the Car Thief realized it’d be stupid to go gonzo on debt increase.

However, there are so many SoCons in his district that I doubt he’d be replaced by a Democrat.

Bill O’Reilly knows “Deport ‘em All!!1” is folly, and can be expected to give Issa’s idea a fair hearing. in that way, the bill’s first major appearance on Fox News will be a positive one, thus helping to defuse hostility and put the extremists on the back foot.

It’s amnesty, at least that’s what the baggers will call it. It’s a toe hold towards legalization, the undocumented don’t have to leave first. Neither you, no Issa, nor anybody is going to be able to sell this to the majority of House Republicans. It’s not a matter of how you handle the marketing campaign, who’s show you go on first or how you craft the message.

It’s so poisonous that a continued push is one of the few things that could actually cause the TP guys to go third party in several races after losing primary challenges.

I mean, by all means, go for it, you’re in a civil war for party control whether you like it or not. But you’re high if you think this is the kind of issue that the party will be able to unite behind.

Most people realize that six years is a death sentence for the anti immigration side. That’ six years of continued demographic shift. Six years of legal status as American residents, six years having more citizen kids, six years cementing ties to the community, six years of inertia. As a pragmatic matter it’ll be damned near impossible to deport them after that, as it should be. No way in hell the TP guys go for this.

NRCC Chair Gets Primary Challenger

Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR), the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, is now facing a primary challenge from Klamath County Commissioner Dennis Linthicum.

Linthicum announced his primary challenge Wednesday, according to The Oregonian. In an interview with the Oregon newspaper Linthicum said Walden has made a career out of being a politician.

He also said that Tea Party Republicans are “clearly in my camp.”

Of course they won’t. But I suspect that in the long run it doesn’t matter whether they like it or not. Change will happen, people will come and stay.
It would be humane to allow those here to have legal status, but the TPers are too afraid of brown people to let it happen easily.

It’s about inevitability, and their vain hope that they can fight against it if they just put up a high enough barrier. That they can somehow keep out the people they don’t want and so keep a bigger piece of the pie for themselves in perpetuity. Remember the story from the SF hospital where a woman went missing and her body wasn’t discovered until 17 days later, inside that very same hospital?

Well, an update:

Hospital employee stepped over body of missing patient, reports say

The family of a woman who vanished from her San Francisco hospital room and was found dead 17 days later in an emergency stairwell is angered by reports that a hospital employee stepped over her several days before the body attracted the attention of investigators, family representatives said.

Haig Harris, a lawyer representing the children of Lynne Spalding, 57, said he was told that the hospital employee saw a woman lying in the exterior stairwell and reported it to a nurse. The nurse notified the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department, which handles security for the city-owned hospital and previously had searched the grounds for Spalding.

But days passed before another hospital employee noticed the woman and got the attention of authorities, Harris said.

Caught on tape: CA mayor’s racist remarks paint Iraqi immigrants as drug dealers and moochers

While a California mayor and his city defend themselves against accusations of racism after his remarks criticizing Chaldean Catholic immigrants from Iraq were published in a national magazine, audio obtained exclusively by The Raw Story reveals him also disparaging his town’s Mexican-American community and “Black Africans” in an interview replete with stereotype-driven opinions.

During an interview with Arun Gupta for The Progressive magazine published in May 2013, El Cajon Mayor Mark Lewis can be heard saying the city has had “a terrible time” dealing with some Chaldean business owners because they will allegedly not serve women.

Lewis did not deny making those statements in a separate interview with KGTV after the meeting, saying, “I made those comments but not in that order,” arguing that they stemmed from complaints from other residents looking to qualify for the free lunch program.

“First time, they come over here, it doesn’t take them too long to learn where all the freebies are at,” Lewis says in the interview.

Meanwhile, Lewis can also be heard on the tape saying, “There’s lots of prostitutes in regards to the Middle Eastern community” and telling Gupta that the increasing number of Chaldeans had touched off drug-related tension among three different minority communities.

“The Mexican community feels intimidated, in regards to Chaldeans trying to get into their turf, in regards to selling drugs,” Lewis says. “Same as the Black Africans, Black Americans.”

For point of reference, El Cajon is represented by Duncan Hunter and is the home of Jim Garlow’s Skyline Megachurch. One of its bordering communities is Santee, known as Klantee to many of the locals.

re: #87 Kragar

As most people who live in San Diego ought to know by now, there is a large Iraqi immigrant population that has been resettled into the county, with a large concentration in El Cajon.

And, as any long time resident ought to be able to testify, El Cajon is a quite a town in conflicting demographies. This is the area which brought us Duncan Hunter, and now Duncan the Lesser. It’s the home of many fundamentalists and the region is dotted with SoCon super churches. It’s also an area with lots of poor people.

The whole area is ” replete with stereotype-driven opinions”.

I’m watching one of the most amazing movies placed on film..Just effening unreal. awesome footage..I don’t know why..But it caught my eye..
A movie called Trader Horn filmed in Africa in 1930 and released in 31. The first movie filmed in Africa and everyone was completely innocent to the world..The footage is just mind blowing..They went through 14000 miles of Africa with the star ( Harry Carey ) bragging the whole time that he was a great white man in Africa..The credits included 4 great white hunters who made it all possible. One was an Army Major..You just can’t make this shit up
.( Guess they shot a lot of animals during filming )
The film is so amazing..
So more than 80 years ago..
1.) It was ok to show numerous black girls and ladies running around with no clothes on..It was awesome.. But there is no white women running around With their boobies floppy around. Nor sir, Edwina Booth always played the straight white woman with lots of jungle gear on..Groan
2.) There was a Black girl ( Swear to God ) Making corn rows in some guys hair. I couldn’t believe it..Hey it was filmed in 1930.
3.) Amazing footage of Africa..The nature scenes blew my mind,,So Wild and pure..The people were so much different..And yet so much the same.
Giggling African teens on camera was priceless..

I’m 40 now. Assuming that the DNA engineering and/or cellular rejuvination would cure any diseases and leave me with the ability to be active and enjoy that extended lifespan, I’d take an extra 50-100 years beyond whatever my natural life expectancy would be.

The way I see it, why not? It would be fascinating to see how society and technology continue to evolve over a second lifetime. So much has changed in just the last 20 years that I’m really curious to see where it would all go from here.

You’re absolutely right about mental health issues. And it would depend also on socio-economic improvements and opportunities. I don’t see those factors improving as quickly as science can discover cures for the body, etc.

I don’t think a lot of thought goes into all that life extension BS since it’s mostly men, mostly white, who are the pushers of this kind of idealism. Individual circumstances enter into all aspects of life, and the best laid plans. My present age is 72 and I’m raising a 3 yr old child w/my grandson. This is the 4th generation (including myself) that I’ve raised, or helped to raise. When I was a young teen, I wanted a college education and a career, a pretty tall order for a motherless, working class girl with a distant and ignorant father, unheard of at the time. I got neither, of course, but I’ve had plenty of happiness.

Party on: Maryland attorney general doesn’t stop underage alcohol party; what would you do?

pennlive.com

“The celebration in a rented South Bethany home included underage participants, many of which were later confirmed to have been drinking alcohol, according to media reports. Tell-tale red cups, typical of beer parties, were a plenty in photos of the house party. Gansler had apparently stopped by the house to talk to his teen-age son, leaving soon after his photo was snapped by a partier.

“And Gansler’s response to all of this?

“Basically, the attorney general who is now running for governor of the state has shrugged and said it wasn’t his party, according to media reports. Therefore, it was not his responsibility as a parent or a high-ranking law enforcement official to intervene, Gansler has told the media.”

I think it’s pretty ridiculous that 18 yr olds can’t buy beer in the US, where in almost every other country in the world (except those ruled by Sharia law) 18 is the standard age, and even 16 and 17 yr olds can drink if an adult purchases it.

This is just one of those “gotcha” moments in American politics. Will we ever outlive our Puritan past and moralistic bullshit?

I recall getting back stateside a week before my 21st birthday and being denied a glass of wine at a restaurant in Kansas even though I’d been in the army and could legally drink (back then) at 18 in my home state of Wisconsin. It was one of the most idiotic things I ever ran into.
