GOP calls for a Halloween Health Care Witch Hunt, with an eye towards burning Sebelius
US News • Views: 22,267

Quick! Bring out the Darrell! We need a Congressional Investigation to distract the feeble minded public from our failure!

Darrell trolls ahead of his coming “investigation”:

Or as Greg Sargent puts it, after their post government shutdown over Obamacare fail they’ve pivoted from Obamacare to… Obamacare:

Emboldened by the intense public criticism surrounding the rollout of the online insurance exchange, Republicans in Congress are refocusing their efforts from denying funds for the health care law to investigating it.

In changing tactics, Republicans hope to tamp down the continuing public criticism of their previously fruitless attack on the Affordable Care Act, one that led to a 16-day government shutdown, by focusing on the problems with the law that they say they have warned the nation about, unheeded, for three years.

“I think the biggest part of Congress’s job is to provide proper oversight of the executive branch of government,” Speaker John A. Boehner said Wednesday at a news conference. “And when it comes to Obamacare, clearly there is an awful lot that needs to be held accountable.”

Beginning Thursday, the House will hold the first of a series of hearings across multiple committees to examine the problems with the troubled Web site, as well as the law’s exemption and waiver components, and the problems that some consumers are having accessing their doctors through the program.

But this time there’s cat pictures!
A website isn’t working to full capacity. This needs a federal level investigation how? Helps fix the issue exactly how?

These fuckers NEVER have an actual solution to anything. EVER.

Emboldened by the intense public criticism

Coming from the same folks who have always been screaming about Obamacare and led them down this primrose path once before. I listened to their press conference yesterday and was astonished to hear the same exact stuff that I heard 4 weeks ago.

4 Internet Tough Guy  Thu, Oct 24, 2013 5:42:12am

The only reasonable response is, “These issues would be fixed if the GOP allowed the government to operate this month.”

So we should just accept this website from Canadian programmers while there are starving programmers here at home?!

Jesus that takes the cake. I say that without any ironic intention.

Also came here to add: as long as it’s Darryl Issa on the job, I will sleep QUITE soundly at night knowing Obamacare is safe and sound. With his track record, the Obamacare website “scandal” will be a tired, hollowed-out BORING talking point in no time.

11 Justanotherhuman  Thu, Oct 24, 2013 5:51:34am

It’s really a sad state of affairs in this country when a minority can treat a sitting President of the United States with such hate and contempt, so much so that they consider him the “enemy”. Even over a law that “their” party helped to contrive, form and legislate federally.

And all because of their racism and reactionary political leanings, they prefer praising Vladimir Putin, a 16 yr veteran of the KGB and therefore, someone authoritarian enough they feel comfortable getting along with. Who’s next, Kim Jong-un?

12 Targetpractice  Thu, Oct 24, 2013 5:55:06am

Of course, this just plays into the poll numbers which came out during the shutdown, showing that even amongst those who disagree with the law as-is, a majority support reform versus repeal. So again, all the GOP does by bringing focus on the sabotage they’ve done to the law is grant weight to Dem assertions that what the law needs is teeth.

I can’t speak for the Marines, but I do like the new blue class A uniform the Army is issuing. Harkens back all the way to the Blue Coats we started with through the Union Blue of the Civil War. A good reminder of who won that time, sez I.

No one should be surprised by any of this. The GOP is going to say and do anything to attempt to gain political advantage. That means even pivoting from actively sabotaging the implementation, including states waiting until the last minute to decide against building their own exchanges (hey, what about states’ rights?) and hoping that the weight of the last minute decisions brings down the website rollout. The last minute decisions definitely played a role, as did the GOP shutdown, which left officials scrambling for ways to fix the site without violating the Anti Deficiency Act and other laws, and so too did the refusal to provide sufficient funds to make sure that the rollout went smoothly when the HHS said that more funds were needed.

The GOP wants everyone to ignore their own actions when claiming that the ACA website and the ACA in general is a failure. But when their solutions are delay/defund/destroy and hold hearings to hear themselves yammer endlessly about the problems they helped inflict, the only thing people need to realize is that this is all being done by the GOP out of fear that the program will be far more successful than any of them could envision, and that the effect on the economy wont be anything near what they and rest of the detractors claim.

That’s not to say that the Administration was blameless - there do appear to be problems with how the project was overseen by HHS and that there wasn’t sufficient interaction between the various parties involved in each facet of the exchange website creation. It contributed to the teething problems, but these are solvable.

The GOP’s obstructionism isn’t.

Issa will do as he did with Benghazi and “Fast & Furious” before it: Only call those witnesses he knows will pin the blame on Democrats or whose credibility he can call into question when they accuse Republicans of being at the root of any of the law’s problems.

Few of them know what Sparta was really like. They think they know about Thermopylae, but they know nothing of the serf class of helots, half of whose crops belonged to the “full citizens”.

Nor do those who call out “Monon Labe!” know that the 300 were only part of 5000 hoplites assembled to block off the pass at Thermopylae. Leonidas was indeed the overall force commander, for Sparta did indeed have the best hoplites in Greece, but Thespe, Athens, and Thebes all sent more men to Thermopylae than did Sparta.

Watch the GOP pounce on this as proof that the ACA doesn’t work, and push for a further delay/repeal of the ACA.

What it indicates is that the GOP is going to remain stuck on destroying the ACA despite the fact that people are already signed up for their health care, and the scare stories proffered by the right don’t quite pass the smell test.

Claims that the ACA causes people to lose their insurance ignores that the policies being phased out are those that don’t meet new minimum coverages - that people will have better coverages than before, including preventative care. The right is doing everything possible to obfuscate the costs - comparing apples to baloney (not even apples to oranges). Or trotting out stories that don’t pass the smell test.

But with that right wing echo chamber in full metal wingnut mode, it’s hard to get through and counter the waves of bs coming from the right.

re: #41 Political Atheist

France and Germany (and Western Europe in general) are among the countries/regions that engage in more than their share of economic espionage - spying on businesses and industry to try and give their own industries an advantage. That spying includes those businesses and industries in the US.

The ONCIX Annual Report to Congress on Foreign Economic Collection and Industrial Espionage reports that almost 100 countries attempted to acquire sensitive technologies from the United States during 2004.2 The large number of countries involved in intelligence collection against the United States is one measure of the scope of the problem, but most are not major players. A relatively few key players consistently account for the lion’s share of the activity, and these are just as likely to be friends and allies of the United States as they are to be potential adversaries. They are countries that try to compete with the United States, either regionally or globally, in the development and sale of technology and/or military equipment.

According to Bruce Gebhardt, Deputy Director of the FBI, “we are seeing a rise in incidences of economic espionage. The increasing value of proprietary information and new technologies have combined to increase both the motives and the opportunities for these crimes. Theft of trade secrets and critical technologies is costing the U.S. economy upwards of $250 billion per year…. The players in the espionage game have diversified. The number of countries engaged in espionage against the U.S. has actually risen since the end of the Cold War, and we are not dealing exclusively with intelligence agents. Today, the threat can come from university students or business executives. According to one study, about 75 percent of economic espionage cases involve company insiders.”3

It’s not just China or Russia doing the spying. And there’s no reason to assume the UK or Iran or Israel or North Korea aren’t spying either. Every country does it - with their own interests involved and at stake. They aren’t going to necessarily have the technological means at their disposal that the US does, but they will do what they can with the resources they have.

Espionage covers the entire gamut from economic and industrial secrets to military movements and political decision making. All are key data points that policy makers in their home countries need to make decisions.

re: #58 Political Atheist

IMO each and every L.E, agency bears watching via a strict check and balance sy7stem. To me one does not impact the other. None get a free pass. Especially the ones that get to hide behind secret letters etc.

I’ll say. The NYPD essentially created their own mini-CIA, but one completely free of any checks & balances. I followed the AP stuff written by the authors, but the book has details about how far-reaching the spying was that made me sick to my stomach.

The worst part is that it was utterly useless. It not only alienated & angered law-abiding members of the Muslim community in NYC—who are by far the vast majority and the most likely to be in a position to warn authorities if they spot something strange—but it failed to prevent/detect a single terrorist attack. IOW, it was a gigantic clusterf*** of #FAIL.

The book contains meticulous footnotes, which means the majority of what the authors wrote can be fact checked. It’s really disturbing. There are people who will say, “Yeah, but Muslims…” Uh-huh, right—today. What about tomorrow? Next year? This is not the first time the NYPD has overstepped, and I doubt it’ll be the last. Maybe next time it’ll be your group.

In DF’s defense it was a better question, and probably will be better than any of the questions the Republicans actually ask. But it also isn’t something Sebelius would know (or should) - user specs? I’ve worked in the software industry for over 15 years…nobody writes user specs. I wish they would. It would make my team’s job easier.

Oh, I agree. Perhaps one of his aides will script something that intelligent for him to ask but if it’s left up to him, that won’t happen.

Yep, it goes way, wayyyy back.

The highlighted part about the NYC Black Panthers almost made coffee shoot out my nose though:

In 1971 he was among the many lawyers working on the Panther 21 case, the trial of Black Panther Party members accused of conspiring to bomb police stations, businesses, and public buildings. While preparing their defense, the Law Commune attorneys came across something unusual: The case against the Panthers was built largely on the testimony of some of the earliest members of the New York chapter of the Black Panthers. There was Gene Roberts, a former security guard for Malcolm X who was present on February 21, 1965, when the Nation of Islam leader was assassinated in Manhattan’s Audubon Ballroom. There was Ralph White, the head of the Panther unit in the Bronx who’d once represented the entire New York chapter at a black power conference in Philadelphia. And there was Carlos Ashwood, who’d sold Panther literature in Harlem.

They were founding fathers of the New York Panthers. And all three, it turned out, were undercover detectives. The NYPD had essentially set up the New York chapter of the Black Panther Party and built files on everyone who signed up. […]

Exactly. The book starts out with a nail-biting description of the FBI tailing Najibullah Zazi from Colorado to NYC to try to figure out exactly what he was up to and stop him, then it stops and goes into detailed descriptions of the NYPD spying, the dynamics of the Afghan community, the backstory of Zazi & his pals, etc.

Then, when it swings back to the FBI chase, you learn that despite all their spying the NYPD had squat to help them understand what these asshats were planning to do. That said, I’m sure they could’ve told the FBI which mosque they went to & how often, who their barber probably was, and where they most likely ate kabob—that would’ve undoubtedly been a HUGE help. //

Comparing premium from 2010 to now? 3 years of intervening cost hikes (because premiums have been going up year over year for decades - going back to the 1990s was the impetus for the original Hillarycare health care proposals and the Heritage-backed individual mandate that the GOP proffered as alternatives.

IOW, that cost difference appears entirely unrelated to the ACA - and baked into the premiums this person claims.

But then again, without knowing this person’s income, costs, deductibles, etc., it’s hard to say exactly what is really going on.

Same thing with all the other so-called horror stories.

Oh, and the letter this person got has the exact language - this person isn’t losing coverage. They’re moving to a new plan that meets the PPACA requirements. Of course, Kynect is the Kentucky ACA health exchange, but everyone who has carried out polling has found that when you strip the ACA of the "ACA" or "Obamacare" moniker, the approvals go up significantly. All that extra baggage comes courtesy of the GOP.

And, the Kynect website was set up by the same company that did healthcare.gov.

124 Backwoods_Sleuth  Thu, Oct 24, 2013 7:53:20am

Then there’s Rand Paul’s take on Kynect:

Sen. Paul: ‘Kynect numbers doesn’t mean the program is a success’

So far, Governor Steve Beshear says more than 300,000 people have visited the website and more than 30,000 applications for healthcare are completed.

On average, since October 1, more than 1,000 applications have been received a day.

Senator Paul says those numbers don’t mean the program is quite the success Governor Beshear claimed it to be on national television earlier this week.

“If I put up a website up and say we have free cars, sign up for free cars, would that be a success? Everybody in Kentucky wants a free car, don’t they? So it’s not a success because people are signing up for it. It would be a success if you can pay for it,” he said.

As usual I’m a little out of step. A little more skeptical of the P.A. and the NSA policies, and a little less on the ACA at least as compared to many good people here.

I never expected a clean start up of the exchanges. Not because of government vs private or anything political. And even setting aside deliberate mischief-

This had too many things working against it. So many states, so many privacy firewalls, so much raw data and if this then that cost estimations…. Frankly it would have been plain ignorant (or an unfair standard-Looking at you GOP) to expect a super clean problem free start. These things need to crawl, then walk then run. Could be it should have rolled out state by state over time. Let the demand grow, that builds in time to scale up and fix whatever needs doing.

The ACA is a fundamental improvement of our nation right under our roofs. let the critics yammer. I’m not losing any sleep over early hiccups.

146 HappyWarrior  Thu, Oct 24, 2013 8:30:07am

The weirdest nitpick I’ve seen about ACA is people mad that it’s called Obamacare. Yes, people believe a bill’s nickname that is often used to rail on it is the actual name and that Obama because Obama is the most egotistical person ever named the bill after himself. I think it was Jimmy Kimmel that had people asked around “What do you prefer ACA or Obamacare.” The former got overwhelming support, the latter more jeers. The right likes to claim that we were lied to about this bill and it was shoved down our throats but they have lied more on the law than anyone has.

147 Backwoods_Sleuth  Thu, Oct 24, 2013 8:33:39am

This is an ACA problem that needs to be addressed:

Health Care Law Fails to Lower Prices for Rural Areas

While competition is intense in many populous regions, rural areas and small towns have far fewer carriers offering plans in the law’s online exchanges. Those places, many of them poor, are being asked to choose from some of the highest-priced plans in the 34 states where the federal government is running the health insurance marketplaces, a review by The New York Times has found.

Of the roughly 2,500 counties served by the federal exchanges, more than half, or 58 percent, have plans offered by just one or two insurance carriers, according to an analysis by The Times of county-level data provided by the Department of Health and Human Services. In about 530 counties, only a single insurer is participating.

152 lawhawk  Thu, Oct 24, 2013 8:38:27am

re: #147 Backwoods_Sleuth

Of those 530 counties, what’s the population in them? Does it make sense for there to be more insurers in those areas? Does the health infrastructure in those counties support more insurers (or are we talking about a very sparse population with one hospital and handful of doctors, so that the coverage under that single insurer covers those involved)? There’s lot of information that is required before you can conclude that there’s a problem and a given location should have more insurers.

That said, more insurers would bring more competition and potentially push prices down.

re: #146 HappyWarrior

The weirdest nitpick I’ve seen about ACA is people mad that it’s called Obamacare. Yes, people believe a bill’s nickname that is often used to rail on it is the actual name and that Obama because Obama is the most egotistical person ever named the bill after himself. I think it was Jimmy Kimmel that had people asked around “What do you prefer ACA or Obamacare.” The former got overwhelming support, the latter more jeers. The right likes to claim that we were lied to about this bill and it was shoved down our throats but they have lied more on the law than anyone has.

Stupid children. The Nut Jobs used “Obamacare” to belittle the plan. Ha ha when the 2012 campaign decided to embrace the term, producing bumper stickers I heart Obamacare etc. etc. etc.

They once again are burned by their stupidity.

154 HappyWarrior  Thu, Oct 24, 2013 8:38:54am

You know, maybe we wouldn’t had these bugs if the government wasn’t shutdown during the first days this was implemented. Despite what right wing nutjobs believe, this sort of thing happens in the business world too. When I first got GTA V, the online had loads of problems. Anyone who uses the website having problems as “proof” that government can’t be trusted to do anything right is an idiot especially if it’s the same idiot who wants the government to be their moral arbitrator.

For Slutsky, this closed-door approach is the problem.

I don’t know the answers, but I do think it’s a problem that should be addressed. We have sparsely populated counties in Kentucky and there are at least two companies competing in each county here.

If there is only one insurer offering coverage in an area and the quoted rates are higher than average then other insurance carriers will seek to undercut those prices once they see the opportunity. That is how the “free market” is supposed to work after all isn’t it? I doubt there will be any markets (no matter how small) with only one carrier offering coverage for very long at all.

Hopefully there will be enough popularity with the program overall, they will be able to lower costs in those low population areas. Also, there is still the common ways that insurance companies have always done business that will need further tweaks in the law. There might still be areas the companies can say there is not a lot of business and what business is there is more costly to cover so they charge higher rates. That will probably be apparent to the government overseers so maybe after all the histrionics and politics die down they (yes, you too Republicans that actually choose to govern) can actually work on the damn thing.

A single person household who wants to apply for SNAP (EBT) benefits in Florida has to earn more than $1278.00 a month to be ineligible. There are a lot of part-timers at McDonalds and Walmart (along with many other “service” jobs) who will never earn that much given their wage scale and hours.

Herman Cain: The Devil Was Behind Sexual Harassment Allegations

Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain has an idea who might be behind the allegations of sexual harassment that plagued his campaign two years ago: the Devil.

The former CEO of the National Restaurant Association told RealClearReligion in a story published Wednesday that he didn’t challenge allegations that he sexually harassed at least four women, some of them anonymous, while at the helm of that organization because it would have been a “huge distraction” from his campaign. He maintained that his accusers are “liars.”

Now serving as an associate pastor at a Baptist church in Atlanta, Cain speculated to the publication that the Devil may have masterminded the allegation

It’s hilarious watching GOPers claiming the ACA does this and that, when it’s clearly not in the law, or is prohibited because of other federal law like HIPAA.

And HIPAA has clear rules for clearinghouses (which one could categorize the exchanges as)

All this means nothing to a GOP witch hunt on trying to hang someone from the Administration out to dry.

Youtube Video

More specifically, the GOP, who likes to claim that no one read the ACA before passage, proves their very point by showing they have no comprehension of what’s in the program, what’s allowed or not, and how it benefits areas that have high numbers of uninsureds that happen to be across Red States. The GOP screws its own all to spite the Administration, and is failing on all accounts (including in the money race for campaign monies going into 2014).

Pallone: I started out in my opening statement saying there was no legitimacy to this hearing and the last line of the questioning certainly confirms is that.

HIPAA only applies when there’s health information being provided. That’s not in play here today. No health information is required in the application process. And why is that? Because pre-existing conditions don’t matter! So once again, here we have my Republican colleagues trying to scare everybody —

Barton, interrupting: If the gentleman will yield?

Pallone: No, I will not yield to this monkey court or whatever —

Barton: This is not a monkey court!

Gotta admire the reverend of the church, he kept the opening comment and prayer extremely short, told the people speaking at the funeral to introduce themselves rather than trying to share the limelight with them and said that his primary job was to keep the service moving forward in a “timely fashion.”

He pointed out a clock (hidden from the audience) meant to time each speakers comments and politely insisted that he would enforce the time limit if necessary.

The roads are going to be bad this afternoon, the motorcade from the funeral service to Bay Pines (soon to be Bill Young) National cemetery is going to block a lot of mid-county traffic. Then the motorcade returning the 100+ Washington D.C. visitors from the cemetery to the airport is going to cut the county in half again right about at rush hour. :(

They were supposed to roll out 200 servers, have them completely configured and begin operational testing by tomorrow. This project was broken down into 4 phases, and has been running for about the last 8 weeks.

They haven’t even passed the half way point for phase 1.

Peter Brimelow: ‘Too Extreme For WND’

What is in this too-crazy-for-WND column?

Brimelow argues that Democrats’ supposed support of an “invasion” and “colonization” of the US by non-white immigrants is treason because it reduces the percentage of the white population.

Hard to believe that WND, which has published Brimelow’s columns previously and is the home of anti-immigrant writers such as Ann Coulter, Pat Buchanan, Tom Tancredo and Jerome Corsi (who peddle the same fears about the death of White America and the GOP), would find anything wrong with this column.

We don’t know what WND’s editors were thinking, because this reads just like a column one would see on their site.

South Carolina soup kitchen refuses to allow atheists to volunteer

“I told [the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen] we wouldn’t wear our T-shirts. We wouldn’t tell anyone who we are with. We just want to help out,” Upstate Atheist president Eve Brannon told the Spartanburg Herald-Jounal. “And they told us that we were not allowed.”

Lou Landrum, the Soup Kitchen’s executive director, told the same paper that allowing the atheists to distribute their care packages would be a “disservice to this community.”

“We stand on the principles of God,” she said. “Do [atheists] think that our guests are so ignorant that they don’t know what an atheist is? Why are they targeting us? They don’t give any money. I wouldn’t want their money.”

Landrum said that “they can set up across the street from the Soup Kitchen. They can have the devil there with them, but they better not come across the street.”

Beck: An EMP Attack Will Kill Half The Population, So Buy Food Insurance

One of the oddest things about Glenn Beck’s daily radio program is watching him spend twenty minutes ranting and/or sobbing about some topic, only to suddenly make a transition to promoting the company or product that is sponsoring that particular half-hour of programming.

Sometimes the transition is jarring, like when he has been screaming about how Terminators are going to take over the world and then suddenly stops and begins touting the amazing work being done by Freedomworks or the importance of buying gold from Goldline.

But other times, the transition is more fluid and natural, like when he talks about a program that aired on his network the night before warning of the dangers of an EMP attack, which he uses encourage his audience to visit FoodInsurance.com.

“If this is indeed what they are going to do to us,” Beck said, warning of a possible EMP attack by Russia or Iran or North Korea on the United States, “it will kill half the population in a year. What do you say you’re prepared? Go to FoodInsurance and prepare”.

Well, you wouldn’t be killed instantly. You would die from starvation because any means of transportation dependent on electronics not properly ruggedized would simply stop working. And it would take time to replace it.
And what little modes of tranportation remains would not be enough.

My rule of thumb is based on “9 meals from anarchy” adage. I keep 9 meals that do not require anything electronic or electric to store or prepare, as well as a stockpile of tealights.
