GOP Clown Show: Rep. Joe Barton Freaks Out Over an HTML Comment

Sheer fail
Politics • Views: 26,725

Video

OK, folks, this one is just unbelievable.

At today’s Republican clown show on the poor performance of healthcare.gov, Rep. Joe Barton (R-Tex.) pulled out a slide showing some HTML code from a page at the site and ranted that it was a violation of HIPAA privacy laws, because a section of the code says “you have no reasonable expectation of privacy.”

Here’s a screenshot of the slide (click to embiggen):

I tried to find the page containing this code at the site but couldn’t; it looks like it might be an error page resulting from some bad input. Barton’s interns must have really been scouring the code to find anything they could use.

But the really unbelievable part? The code Barton ranted about is actually just an HTML comment. The quote about “no reasonable expectation of privacy” appears inside comment markers (e.g. “”)

To continue you must accept …

You have no reasonable expectation of privacy…

… for any lawful Government purpose.

—>

This is obviously boilerplate text that was part of a template, and instead of deleting an unnecessary section, whoever coded this page simply commented out the part that did not apply. The text does not actually appear anywhere on the site.

That’s right. Republicans are so insanely desperate to destroy the Affordable Care Act that they’re trying to stoke fear over comments in the source code that are not visible to users of the healthcare.gov site.

You can’t make up this kind of stuff. It’s a perfect picture of GOP derangement.

I absolutely believe from the bottom of my heart that Joe Barton does not know what a “comment” means in the context of computer programming.

To be fair to the honorable dipshit Barton, I don’t think that makes him in any way unusual in Congress.

I am sorry but this whole thing reeks of sabotage.

Worse is the disgusting smirks.

It wouldn’t surprise me for one second if there are hackers busy trying to screw up the site with malice of intent.

And if I may mention, I truly truly loathe these people.

As if the Internet didn’t hate the GOP enough already.

I suppose it may be petty but what really grinds my gears is when situations like this cause a mass spread of technical misinformation where everybody thinks they are an expert but only a precious few actually know what the heck they are talking about.

Republicans are so insanely desperate to destroy the Affordable Care Act that they’re trying to stoke fear over comments in the source code.

Or maybe he’s just a blithering idiot like “Series of Tubes” Ted Stevens and doesn’t know anything about coding. I mean, not knowing anything about a subject has never stopped Republicans from ranting and raving about said subject before.

And of course, as pointed out during these monkey court hearings, HIPAA is irrelevant to begin with.

The lack of a pre-existing conditions clause means that one does not have to provide any real medical information (which is the only kind of information HIPAA is intended to protect) to the insurance company to get a rate quote.

As best I’ve been able to ascertain, a pretty major government IT project was outsourced to a shitty vendor and it’s causing some really foul delays, but because of the way the legal side is structured it’s unlikely to do anything but waste a few hours of everyones’ time, but that is still probably enough that a few heads should roll/resign.

not even sure that the vendor is all that shitty, guilty of not doing enough QA and volume testing, yeah I could buy that. The thing is, they’re expected to interface with multiple government agencies, federal and state and share and pass information back and forth between them and insurance agencies and their various state iterations. So yeah, it’s complex and yes, its had some issues. Could some of this be chalked up to people what resent its very existence, you betcha, is it a seamless functioning entity… um no, but then again, massive rollouts like this are rarely glitch or problem free. Ask any software developer of any game or application.

Probably not in this case, though. The coders probably used a design template for the Terms and Conditions page and simply commented out the boilerplate/sample text instead of deleting it. So it doesn’t display on the website, but the inactive code can still be seen.

Cue GOP mouth-breathers “ZOMG It’s a secret part of the agreement! Obummer doesn’t want you to see what you’re really agreeing to!” Oh, wait, too late…

It feels small to this New Yorker. :-)

Also, in terms of population of the urban area, San Antonio ranks 26th in the country, between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. I think it has such a large city population because most of its suburban areas are technically part of the city. When the exchange gets fixed, everybody is going to forget this episode ever happened. What are Republicans going to complain about… that Obamacare forced people not to go through the exchanges? Isn’t that what they want?

We’ll see how this thing looks in a month or so. For many people who don’t know any better, the choice is never having insurance or having insurance in one month, and despite how much the Republicans flail and try to keep people away from the program, people are going to choose the latter every single time.

Brunei’s sultan announces strict Islamic penalties

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei (AP) - A new criminal law that could include penalties like amputation for theft and stoning for adultery will be enforced for Muslims in Brunei in six months, its ruling sultan announced.

Brunei’s Shariah Islamic court had previously handled mainly family-related disputes. The sultan has been hoping to implement the new law for years to bolster the influence of Islam in the tiny, oil-rich monarchy on Southeast Asia’s Borneo island. […]

[Brunei’s Mufti] Awang said there should be no concerns that foreign travelers might end up avoiding Brunei after the law is implemented.

“Please listen to our answer. Sir, do all potential tourists to Brunei plan to steal? If they do not, then what do they need to fear,” he said. “Believe me when I say that with our Shariah criminal law, everyone, including tourists, will receive proper protection.” […]

The list of Middle East Nations I want to visit right now is small right now. Just 3.

Jordan, Morocco, and Oman.

That’s it.

I would check carefully on the local laws before going. I believe not long ago a foreign woman was convicted of adultery when she was raped in one of those sultanates.

That last part is an extremely important one, and one that many secular students of evangelical purity culture miss—it’s the backbone to the entire concept of purity, the theological underpinning that makes conservative evangelicals such a unique breed. Until we understand just how deeply this “You are not your own” theology is intertwined within purity culture, we will not be able to truly understand the politicians who discuss rape in horrific terms, or the reasons Christian employers see fit to interfere with their employees’ access to birth control.

READ THE WHOLE THING

The article also states that the first Purity Ball was in 1999. So, I now know when the world went crazy.

For those not familiar with the exploits of Mr Bragg:

There is a famous, apocryphal story, included in Ulysses S. Grant’s memoirs, about Bragg as a company commander at a frontier post where he also served as quartermaster. He submitted a requisition for supplies for his company, then as quartermaster declined to fill it. As company commander, he resubmitted the requisition, giving additional reasons for his requirements, but as the quartermaster he denied the request again. Realizing that he was at a personal impasse, he referred the matter to the post commandant, who exclaimed, “My God, Mr. Bragg, you have quarreled with every officer in the army, and now you are quarreling with yourself!”

106 lawhawk  Thu, Oct 24, 2013 1:12:11pm

That’s the best that Barton could do? Find a commented out disclaimer in the source code? With all that’s apparently wrong with the ACA exchange site, he’s focused on a disclaimer that 1) was put inside a comment because it was inapplicable; and 2) isn’t seen by the public unless looking at source code because it doesn’t apply?

That’s what he’s going with? Is that his final answer?

Because that’s one heck of a nothing burger. In a whole boat load of nothing burgers.

Reminds me of the scene in the Mikado, where Koko discusses his upcoming nuptials with Pooh-Bah…

Ko: Pooh-Bah, it seems that the festivities in connection with my approaching marriage must last a week. I should like to do it handsomely, and I want to consult you as to the amount I ought to spend upon them.

POOH: Certainly. In which of my capacities? As First Lord of the Treasury, Lord Chamberlain, Attorney-General, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Privy Purse, or Private Secretary?

Ko: Suppose we say as Private Secretary.

POOH: Speaking as your Private Secretary, I should say that as the city will have to pay for it, don’t stint yourself, do it well.

Ko: Exactly as the city will have to pay for it. That is your advice.

POOH : As Private Secretary. Of course you will understand that, as Chancellor of the Ex chequer, I am bound to see that due economy is observed.

Ko: Oh! But you said just now “don’t stint yourself, do it well,”

POOH: As Private Secretary.

Ko: And now you say that due economy must be observed.

POOH : As Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Ko: I see. Come over here, where the Chancellor can’t hear us. (They cross the stage.) Now, as my Solicitor, how do you ad vise me to deal with this difficulty?

POOH: Oh, as your Solicitor, I should have no hesitation in saying “chance it ”

Ko: Thank you. (Shaking his hand) I will.

POOH: If it were not that, as Lord Chief Justice, I am bound to see that the law isn’t violated.

Ko : I see. Come over here, where the Chief Justice can’t hear us. (They cross the stage.) Now, then, as First Lord of the Treasury?

POOH: Of course, as First Lord of the Treasury, I could propose a special vote that would cover all expenses, if it were not that, as Leader of the Opposition, it would be my duty to resist it, tooth and nail. Or, as Pay master-General, I could so cook the accounts that, as Lord High Auditor, I should never discover the fraud. But then, as Archbishop of Titipu, it would be my duty to denounce my dishonesty and give myself into my own custody as First Commissioner of Police.

Ko: That’s extremely awkward.

POOH : I don’t say that all these distinguished people couldn’t be squared; but it is right to tell you that they wouldn’t be sufficiently degraded in their own estimation unless they are insulted with a very considerable bribe.

Part of that stems from the fact that we - in the Allied Powers of WW2 in least - have caricatured the Nazis; we’ve lampooned them, or portrayed them as something straight out of a comic book or a 1930s RKO serial. We’ve reduced them to generic cartoon characters. As a result, the Nazis are not really considered in the proper historic context; they’re just a mental shortcut for “evil”.

True that. I do have to say though the more I learn about the full scale evil of Nazi atrocities, the more it outrages me that people cheapen them by using something like ACA to compare with them. Yes, but more comes from the Right’s desire to see itself as the misunderstood, persecuted heroes in a war that will determine the very future of everything. They have ‘Greatest Generation Envy’. Back in the mid 2000s, they were absolutely convinced that they were facing a fight bigger than WWII and more potentially dangerous than the Cold War in dealing with Islam, but that’s fizzled to a great extent - ObL is dead, and Obama did it, and there’s been no big attack to follow 9/11.

But, they still need to feel they’re facing a greater existential threat than Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, so providing healthcare for millions becomes THE Act That Will Destroy America!!!!

I think you’re right about this and I see it especially with Beck. Obama and the left can’t merely be disagreeable or ideological wrong. They have to be evil. They have to be like the worst evils this world has ever seen. I think it’s a product of the right wing mindset that sees things in absolute terms more so than the nuance mind that you’ll see on the left. Obviously not every right wing person has that but in my observations, right wingers are more prone to see things in “us versus them” terms rather than complexities.

One example (among many but I could write a book on the subject):

The Pauls, Glibertarians, and most of the GOP ranting about the Federal Reserve, “fiat” currency, budgeting on a national level, and macroeconomics in general.

Their understanding of those subjects is about as good as Joe Barton’s understanding of software engineering.

That’s the thing that always cracked me up about Christian religions. Ol’ St. Pete’s One True Church was never enough. Now there are thirty five gazillion religions/churches and “one true word” is followed by “our way.”

Reminds me of the joke I’ve seen posted here about encountering the suicidal man on the bridge. The two men find out they’re both Baptists but a slight disagreement leads to the encountering man pushing the suicidal man over the bridge. As someone who was baptized Catholic and whose family has been nominally Catholic for generations, I never got all these confusing demoninations. I mean the Reformation was obviously necessary but the more zealous brands of Protestantism have always disturbed me. I mean there’s a story about a bunch of Evangelicals being outraged at the Pope saying that there’s too much obsession with abortion and marriage. They say he insulted them or something like that. Me? I think evangelicals are some of the most insecure in their faith people I’ll ever see. They’ll urge society to be more biblical but yet they have no problem with twisting the Bible to justify treating the less well off like crap.

re: #162 HappyWarrior

I think you’re right about this and I see it especially with Beck. Obama and the left can’t merely be disagreeable or ideological wrong. They have to be evil. They have to be like the worst evils this world has ever seen. I think it’s a product of the right wing mindset that sees things in absolute terms more so than the nuance mind that you’ll see on the left. Obviously not every right wing person has that but in my observations, right wingers are more prone to see things in “us versus them” terms rather than complexities.

What bothers me the most about this RW behavior pattern is that branding one’s foes as the ultimate evil really is the first step on the path to scapegoating them for all perceived problems and then advocating ‘elimination’ of the ‘problem’.

Yeah, but we do that to everything!!!

Whoa…did not know that. Being of Catholic background, I’ll have to read up some on that particular movement.

Smallish freaky cult of Catholics who as individuals need strict structure in their lives. I think most of the Opus Dei types are doing what they need to do to be functional within society. At least that is the impression I got from some of the shows I’ve seen.

There are others who seem to want Opus Dei to be the RC version of The Family. None of it with Vatican Support. All of it about Power and Control.

The Prayers Of Cindy Jacobs’ Six Year-Old Son Prevented A Presidential Assassination

As Jacobs reported on her most recent “Ten Minute Prayer School,” when he son Daniel was six years-old, he came in from playing, complaining of feeling unwell. As his mother tried to figure out what was the matter, Daniel revealed that he was worried that the president might be killed, so the two of them prayed to God would avert any assassination attempts on the president.

“God had called my child into intercessory prayer,” Jacobs said. “Later on, we found out, behind the scenes that there had been an assassination attempt on the president; it wasn’t widely publicized”:

I prayed no one in my neighborhood would be mauled by a tiger, even though we live in a suburban area.

No one has been attacked by a tiger yet.

SORO’S

Major donor George Soros backs Hillary Clinton for US president

Billionaire financier and major Democratic Party donor George Soros is backing an effort to persuade former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton to run for president in 2016, a spokesman says.

Mr Soros, 83, has pledged $25,000 to political action committee Ready For Hillary, the largest and best-funded independent group backing a potential Clinton candidacy.

The wife of former president Bill Clinton would be widely viewed as the favourite for the Democratic presidential nomination if she decides to run.

“His support for Ready for Hillary is an extension of his long-held belief in the power of grassroots organising,” said Mr Soros’ spokesman Michael Vachon.

In the interview, which aired Wednesday night, Yelton tells Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi that the new voting law, which mandates voter identifications, the curtailing of early voting operations and does not allow college students to vote using their school ID, “is going to kick the Democrats in the butt.” He also dismisses concerns that the law will particularly affect communities of color by saying, “If it hurts a bunch of lazy Blacks that want the government to give them everything, so be it.”

I was taking the approach that he was representing the business community POV considering his publication was Business Insider, so I wasn’t expecting any kind of advocacy for any other group. Just a POV of “how can I quiet down my employees so that they’ll stop talking about this so I can get some work done around here, so it’s important to me to know when you’re going to get this fixed”. At least that’s what I took away from it… could be that I read more into it or didn’t get the same vibe as other folks.

I was referring more to his tweet, dismissing the rather real world concerns of women, posted on a site revolving around women’s issues, as parody.

agreed, the tweet was … trying to find the right word… clueless comes to mind. The questions from the article I thought had some validity from the POV of an engaged business owner, but not sure why he should care considering this is mostly an individual mandate access issue. On reflection, maybe the questions he elaborated on may have more about an attempt to count coup on the Administration considering that it sounded like a GOP talking point about Sibelius and when did she know that something was wrong, reminiscent of the entire Benghazi blowup.

Yeah, I think the article covered some genuine areas to be critical about, but, again…there’s that matter of having a clue and some background knowledge. If various private entities have ongoing and notable problems and people aren’t losing their jobs over it, why would Sebellius get canned for it? Particularly since we KNOW Congress pulled the plug right on roll out and probably hashed the hell out of the budget in the build up to roll out?

More info on Norwich well victims.

I’m in Norwich right now - it was quite a shock to hear of that discovery, though I already knew something of the grim history of anti-Jewish violence and persecution.

The region has a shit-ton of history, much of it none too pretty, though what remains are an unbelievable number of quaint little churches (ironically it’s now the most “Godless region” of the UK, itself a pretty Godless country, if a headline in the local newspaper is to be believed)

(I was walking through an area called Tombland (yes, really) and came across a door to a church called St Mary the Less which I’d never noticed before - because the rest of the strange little church is totally hidden. It seems the church at one time was used by “The Strangers” IIRC French and Walloon Protestants fleeing persecution and massacre in Europe by Catholics)

Then there’s Cromwell - hero and villain in one man, from this region, not fondly remembered in Ireland

On a more positive note, there’s a small group of statues celebrating famous folk with a Norwich connection, the most recognisable of which is Stephen Fry; gay, Jewish and embraced by Norwich as one of it’s own. There is progress
