The pause when asked directly, the “my best friend is black” line, the lazy people wanting free stuff from the government …it was amazingly depressing.

Embarrassing to admit, but I was aware of nutcases like this back when I was a very active Republican. I was part of the contingent- every local GOP congregation had one- whose task it was to throw a blanket over the nuts, get them back into the attic, and hold the door shut before the media got wind of them. It was a much easier task before the net. Today it is well nigh impossible. Besides, with Obama in office most remaining GOPers see no reason to even try.

For the second time in a month, the white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens’ (CCC) entanglement with elements of the South Carolina GOP has come to light in a deeply embarrassing moment for the Republican Party.

The request to Rogers to resign followed by a month the resignation of Roan Garcia-Quintana from S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s 2014 re-election campaign steering committee (of which Bryngelson is also a member). Garcia-Quintana quit the committee after Hatewatch revealed that he was a former board director and lifetime member of the CCC, a racist group directly descended from the old White Citizens Councils that angrily battled school desegregation in the 1950s and 1960s.

Some had mutated versions of KSR2.
It had a twin effect of increasing their appetite while their slowing metabolism.
“You would be hungry and wanting to eat a lot, you would not want to move because of a slower metabolism and would probably also develop type 2 diabetes at a young age,” lead researcher Prof Sadaf Farooqi told the BBC.
She added: “It slows the ability to burn calories and that’s important as it’s a new explanation for obesity.”

Report: Scott Walker decisions drove insurance rates much higher in Wisconsin than in Minnesota
A consumer advocacy group said Wednesday that Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s rejection of federal Medicaid money and the state’s hands-off approach to rate regulation has pushed health care exchange rates up to 99 percent higher than in neighboring Minnesota.
Robert Kraig, the executive director of Citizen Action of Wisconsin, said a report he co-authored shows that “rates are much higher in Wisconsin than in Minnesota, despite having similar geographies and similar underlying medical costs.”
Kraig said Wisconsin insurance exchange premiums for a single person are an average of 79 percent to 99 percent higher than premiums in Minnesota, before tax credits are applied. He said the average Wisconsinite will pay $1,800 more annually for health care.

re: #53 Amory Blaine

Report: Scott Walker decisions drove insurance rates much higher in Wisconsin than in Minnesota
He said higher Wisconsin premiums will hit middle-class Wisconsinites hardest because Affordable Care Act tax credits lessen the impact on low-income people who buy their plans on the insurance exchange.
Kraig said there are two main reasons for the disparity: Walker’s rejection of $119 million in federal dollars to expand BadgerCare, the state’s Medicaid program, which pushed about 92,000 low-income people onto the health exchange; and the state’s lack of oversight of insurance company rates.
Kraig said the low-income people entering the health care exchanges, who would have been eligible for Medicaid, tend to have more medical needs, which drives up premiums.
He’s still at 49% approval rating. Unfucking real.

an interesting article about healthcare.gov problems
A segment of code from the healthcare.gov website shows a command to define a two-letter code for each state plus the District of Columbia, then a note from the programmer about a potential problem with using “50” as a maximum value for the number of those two-letter codes.
and if you look at the fragment of code underneath, underneath this comment, you see two things:
- 50 is a magic number in the loop control
- the routine, getStateCodeFromState(), loops through the data array looking to match the state name, which comes in as a string, to the entry in the data array. the speed of this linear, string matching lookup is probably not critical for this routine, but on the other hand it could certainly be done more quickly, and the klunky nature of the routine does not give me a lot of confidence in the efficiency of the code in general

It actually gets better. Not only did he assault his wife, but later during his campaign falsified an endorsement from her which he published.

So my Aunt has a friend whose son has decided to open a “Bagel-Deli” and she talked me into taking a look at the plans. The father would be the one putting up almost all the money with a 20 year re-payment schedule (he will most likely be deceased before another 5 years passes so full repayment is kind of a moot point to him, except as part of the inheritance of his other offspring).
I looked at the location, I looked at the plans, and I looked at all the bids from the contractors, then I talked to the son. The immediate and inescapable conclusion of my research is that the son is completely out of his friggin mind.
He wants to spend almost $1.7 million to retrofit a 3700 sq. foot strip mall space that was last occupied by a failed KFC franchise. He would only have a 10 year lease on the space and the building owner is not willing to contribute so much as a single cent to any of the renovation work.
The plan of course is to completely gut the entire interior including cutting/breaking up a considerable amount of the slab to run new plumbing and electrical to various points. Three separate new AC and Heat systems, two kitchen ventilation systems, a new roof demanded by the building owner to boot because of all the new penetrations. A new exterior underground grease trap, new public and employee restroom locations, etc, etc.
The part that isn’t “of course” is the design that is proposed for the remodel, the designer definitely has caviar tastes. I’m simply shocked by the profligate waste of money for what is intended as a bagel shop/deli. There are three different levels to the dining floor and to match it there are three different heights to the ceiling. Custom made etched panel curved handrails separate the different levels and also line the path from the front doors to the first order counter. The lighting is all low voltage cable suspended customized curved track lighting, custom metal cut-outs line the walls, etc, etc, etc…
In my mind I have taken to calling it “spaceship bagel” rather than the actual name proposed for the space. Ok, I could see it if it was in a much more upscale area, had better location exposure and if you already had a successful working model for the restaurant. But as a venture start-up? No effing way.
Saturday my Aunt and I are supposed to sit down with the father and discuss what I think of the plans viability, this ought to be interesting. Not sure how to tell him that his son is crazy without making it sound as though I am calling his son crazy if you know what I mean. I guess I am going to have to finesse it a bit, unfortunately I am just not particularly good at doing that. :(

The bitterest truth is better than the sweetest lie. Better to just lay it all out and make it clear how crazy you think his idea is. If they still go forward with it, at least you’ve lifted off your shoulders any guilt over not being brutally honest with them.
124 | Feline Fearless Leader Thu, Oct 24, 2013 8:15:04pm |
That the building owner is not willing to contribute at all towards renovation in order to get a tenant should be a major warning sign. And since it sounds like the owner has seen the plans he might just be sitting back to see how much *his* building can get improved for free.

Avoid finessing it. If the plans are as bad as you say, and I do believe they are, then you must tell them that. It’s a real hellish place to be caught in but when your being asked to give an opinion about what is, for these people, very serious money you have no choice but honesty.
They may well not believe you. Worst case is that they disbelieve you, go ahead, fail badly and blame you for the failure. But you have to tell them what they don’t want to hear anyway.
The only thing I’d suggest is that if you can give them a serious alternative (point to a location in a more upscale location forex) then do so,. Otherwise, consider your duty to be trying your best to keep them from making a drastic mistake even if that means making Cassandra your best friend…

A 1.7 million capital expense for this kind of operation seems crazy on its face. There is most likely no way to even make that back in 10 years operation, let alone make a profit.
One interesting calculation to do is to work out how many months rent the $1.7 million would cover. That might get some healthy skepticism going.
Another pointed question to ask is projected monthly revenues and profits.

re: #118 ausador
“A failed KFC franchise” is a red flag right there. Unless the area was already saturated with fast food chicken places, or the franchisee was a complete idiot, it’s hard to lose money with a KFC in a strip mall. This alone suggests the location is not the best for an upscale bagel-deli. The restaurant would have to be really special to draw enough customers to keep it afloat.
Starting with $1.7M in the hole is also not so wise from a business standpoint. He’s not selling high end goods, and it will take forever to pay down that debt.
He needs a smaller place to start with, no bigger than your typical Subway outlet. Ditch the fancy shmancy remodeling and choose something less expensive and easier to maintain.
Also, what can he offer than other places like Schlotzke’s or Subway can’t?

The son told me that because he was buying a $214,000 12 rack rotisserie bagel oven the size of a very small bedroom he would have the capacity to make bulk sales locally. When I asked if he had actually approached any local buyers yet he insisted that it would be necessary to have the equipment first in order to create samples before he could attempt to sell the product. When I asked if he had any cost of sales projections and at what price point his bulk bagels would sell for he didn’t have any numbers.
He did mention something vague about possibly supplying the local school district with bagels for the breakfast program (possibly he has an insider there?). The problem with that idea is that the school district only pays $1.30 per dozen from its current supplier (I checked).
As Amory Blaine kinda said above, at less than 11 cents each in bulk that is one hell of a lot of bagels to repay $1.7 million.
