NC GOP Precinct Chairman Who Resigned Over Racist Comments: The Party Is ‘Gutless’

Appearing on Asheville radio station WWNC Thursday, Yelton accused the show of taking his comment out of context with a cut-and-paste editing job.

“They created an illusion that I was just personally had an agenda against the blacks, tried to make it talking about racism rather than the real issue of illegal voting,” Yelton told host Pete Kaliner, dodging the question of whether or not his interview advanced his case for voter ID laws.

Asked if the comment was worth making, Yelton said yes, because it made him realize the Republican party has “no guts.”

“I’ll resign my position as precinct chair gladly, I’ll give it up — the heck with it, I don’t want to be part of a group that is that mealy-mouthed and that gutless,” he later added.

NC GOPer Who Called Blacks ‘Lazy’ Uses N-Word To Defend Himself

Don Yelton, the North Carolina GOP official who resigned over the fallout for his racially charged “Daily Show” interview, used the N-word to defend himself in an interview with thewrap.com Friday.

“When a n—- can use the word n—- and it not be considered racist, that’s the utmost racism in the world, and it’s hypocrisy,” he said.

His problem is that the GOP isn’t as open about their bigotry like he is.

2 Kragar  Fri, Oct 25, 2013 11:44:02am

I get the feeling the only reason he was asked to resign was because they were afraid he would give away more of their game plan.

He’s right, of course. The party is gutless. This is just one of many positions they hold near and dear to their hearts, but pretend to reject publicly.

I suspect it was because he said the voter law has everything to do with “kicking Democrats in the butt” or words to that effect. The GOP couldn’t give a shit if someone associated with the party spews racism.

Asheville, huh? Yeah, just because that town has a lot of hippies and leans safely Democratic doesn’t mean there aren’t thugs like this looking for opportunities. Keep that in mind and be vigilant, fellow residents of solid “blue” states/cities.

Spewing racism on TV or the radio where it can be recorded and used against the party? I assure the North Carolina state Republican party cares about THAT. The partisan comment about the voter ID didn’t help, but it was the racism that got the chump dumped.

NC GOP Rep. Cracks Birther Joke About Obama

“There’s a lot of things he’s done wrong, but he is not a traitor. Not as far as I can tell,” he said sarcastically. “I haven’t come across any evidence yet that he has done one thing to harm Kenya.”

Don’t see an F1 in that photo. Wee bit over priced too even for Ebay “Mint”. Nice looking FTb in the “Also viewed” listing though.

One of the many reasons I stopped using Eprey years ago.

I’ve found Ebay to be an excellent place to snag vintage watches for good prices, but ONLY because I’ve spent considerable time and effort learning everything I can about one particular brand in one particular era, and following all the auctions for that brand, daily, for a couple years.

If you don’t do that, you can easily be a lamb to the slaughter.

During the third and final Presidential debate on October 15, 2008, at Hofstra University, many references were made to “Joe the Plumber.”[16] In the debate, McCain repeatedly brought up “Joe the Plumber” and Obama and McCain then made statements aimed directly at Wurzelbacher. As they continue, they won’t be able to hide it. I think it is sticking to them now, that is why the congressional approval ratings are where they are.

still have the sequester level government funding engaged
more threats of filibusters on the horizon for the new fed chair

and thanks to how Washington is wired, its still a struggle for the WH set a narrative instead of simply beating back GOP talking points, of which there is a seemingly endless supply
GOP fuckery at the state level continues apace on womens’ rights, voting rights and Medicaid expansion.

do election prospects look promising, but is that due to Dems being anything more than “at least we’re not a complete clusterfuck like the GOP is” being a very low bar to hurdle?

In the upcoming struggle between the Tea Party and the GOP establishment, I am rooting for maximum damage to both sides. Stoking the resentments of the base while having no plans to actually act on these issues (as the GOP establishment has done for decades) should carry a stiff penalty when it becomes clear that this has happened.

Remember, Kirk said that Obama was quaking in his boots in fear that Americans would actually experience the ACA; this is an obvious, transparent lie that Kirk, if he has a shred of intelligence, knows was a lie. No, I mean that you’re underselling Breitbart’s dishonesty, which was on a much more massive scale.

I’m not underselling anything, but Andrew Breitbart and the dishonesty mill he founded aren’t the issue in this particular matter. Alan Grayson is and I’m not going to explain out matters of degree in fine detail just so I can criticize Grayson. It would take far too long to write such a post and the post would be too dense to attract much attention. Call it the limits of conversation, if you wish.

re: #164 klys

It’s clear that the GOP has done an excellent job, once again, of turning the discussion back to what they want the narrative to be.

Grayson’s e-mail: “The Tea Party is racist.”
Tea Party response: “ARE NOT, AND YOU’RE RACIST FOR SUGGESTING THAT.”

It’s easy enough. Go hyper-literal, find that nobody wearing the tea bags dangling from a tricorn has burned a cross in the last five minutes as part of an officially sponsored Tea Party Rally (TM), declare Grayson a liar because of said lack of a burning cross, and refuse to confront the real issues.

I could write press releases of this sort in my sleep.

Some TeaBagger somewhere is a black and the Dems from 150 years ago never changed.

Idiot Wingnut Cousin that defriended me on FB went on and on about how liberals and Democrats were the real racists. Pretty much every PJ Media talking point came out of his mouth. Near the end of my time on his FB list he was going on and on and on about some group called the Frederick Douglass Republicans that he was suddenly a fanboy for.

No surprise that other relatives are now messaging me saying they can’t deal with his fail anymore and are asking why he’s such a moron.

And Grayson is innocent here? He didn’t just point out the bigotry of the Tea Party. He used the very same cross-burning image with hooded KKK people in the background. For a fucking fundraiser.

If the Tea Party doesn’t want to be associated with racist imagery, then maybe they should cut out the racism. This isn’t comparing Obamacare to slavery. It’s pointing out that the Tea Party employs overt and subtle racism by comparing the Tea Party to a symbol of American racism. I don’t get the heartburn for drawing that parallel.

Or to ask it this way…what should he have done? Just ignore the racism altogether?

a) I have not said I agree with the decision to use the image (and yes, I have seen the e-mail).
b) If there is one place I unfortunately expect over-the-top rhetoric, it’s in a “fucking fundraiser” e-mail.
c) This argument tends to come across as “he has a point but he didn’t say it the right way so I’m going to ignore his point and bitch about his tone.” I guess what I’m not understanding is that while yes, I agree that this choice of image use was not what I would have done, I think the underlying point he’s trying to make is a more relevant one to a lot of people - like, say, the African Americans who are facing the potential loss of their right to vote because of restrictive voter ID laws. And why the fuck can’t we talk about that?

176 Dark_Falcon  Fri, Oct 25, 2013 1:27:26pm

re: #167 Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut

What about something like what Mark Kirk did, that being knowingly lying directly about President Obama’s agenda? Remember, Kirk said that Obama was quaking in his boots in fear that Americans would actually experience the ACA; this is an obvious, transparent lie that Kirk, if he has a shred of intelligence, knows was a lie. Do you feel that direct lie about someone is somehow better than a false edit?

Yes, I honestly do. Because with a dishonest edit you are knowingly taking someone else’s image and voice and twisting them make them appear to be something other than they were.

The other reason is because I have occasionally in my sales career needed to resort to direct lies about product scarcity or demand (never about customer needs or product functions, though) and so I have a tolerance for certain types of lie.

Both the TP and the GOP have no problem with racism. It’s how they win votes and how they keep their bases energized. The GOP has spent the last 40+ openly pandering to bigots, idiots, and religious fanatics with a constant drumbeat of white resentment and anger towards the “other”.

Their problem is when someone else points out the racism, not the racism itself.

That doesn’t work, since to my knowledge George Zimmerman did not and has not associated himself with the Tea Party.

I bet there are just a few a steps from Georgie to the Tea Party. In other words…not much of a leap.

One thing that is for sure, the Tea Party sure took to him. And I’d feel pretty safe saying that was discussed in the Zimmerman family. And with their love of him in a sense he becomes a Tea Party member politically.

I’ll tell you what it boils down to for me. I’ve seen again and again, attacks by the Right on the messenger as a way of distracting from the message.

The response from the Left has been to wring its collective hands, and shake its collective finger at the miscreant, falling all over its collective feet trying to distance itself from him/her.*

Result? The story ends up being about the messenger, and it’s because we allow it to be.

Grayson’s message is simple - the core of the Tea Party is racism. I observe this to be true. And after watching this movie again and again, I’m not going to join in boiling tar and plucking feathers.

I concede that; however, 2010 was a surge year for Republicans, as I’m sure we’re all aware of. It was a Republican leaning district to start with; Grayson’s election in 2006 and 2008 likely had much to do with the overall Democrat gains those years.

I definitely don’t agree with him on a lot of things but it’s important to consider the ramifications of districts and election years.

Yeah Bashir really did give it to him too. I admit, I liked what Grayson did when he stood on the house floor and took the GOP to task but he really comes off as a pompous ass and just did on Bashir’s show.

I’m pretty sure he is a pompous ass.

It’s somewhat unfortunate that people only seem to take notice of attempts to call out racism and privilege in the Tea Party when they’re done by pompous asses.

Strange, that’s not what Wikipedia says about Allen West

Redistricting due to the 2010 census made his district more Democratic, resulting in West switching to Florida’s 18th congressional district for the 2012 House elections. But he lost by 2,146 votes in an expensive and contentious election to Democratic candidate Patrick Murphy.

Let’s step away from Alan Grayson for a bit and move on to two other people. One is Piers Morgan, who get things wrong all the time but at least can clearly articulate himself, the other is:

Sarah Palin directs Facebook photo of her posing with dead bear to Piers Morgan

Sarah Palin keeps telling Piers Morgan she doesn’t want to be on his show, but the CNN talk show host just keeps on asking. This time, Palin said “no” by posting a photo to Facebook of herself smiling as she looms over a recently shot black bear, with the inscription “Piers: Kind of Busy right now,” The Blaze reported.

Image: Sarah-Palin.jpg

Just in case Morgan didn’t get the hint this time, Palin included a detailed message along with the post.

“Oh dear Piers, thank you so much for all your invitations to appear on your shambolic show, including the adoring message you sent,” Palin wrote. “But is it still any wonder why I’ve politely responded that I’m too busy doing, um, er… pretty much anything to accept the invite? (At least I don’t tell you to ‘get stuffed’.) And to all our British friends: we ask, what did your friends across the pond ever do to you to deserve you Piers? [smiley face]”

Be fair. Multiple choice Mitt embraced all sides of every issue. As a matter of logic, he must have been telling the truth about 50% of the time, which is pretty good, all things considered.

I’m going to use only one example of not being truthful. Did Mitt use an edit to be deceptive. No. But saying to a select group of people that 47% of everyone you, I and Dark knows are shiftless entitlement takers is in the damn ballpark. And to say it in a room of your supporters is it’s own edit. Once it came out he said it, he self edited that comment and ran away from owning it.

Hell, he said it was out of context and not what he meant, but never could get around to explaining what he did mean. Everyone knew. Talk about editing. Just not on film. But straight from the horses mouth…denial. But message sent.

Just like 47% can be a metaphor (as Grayson was attempting with the KKK) it also can be debated that is actually what Romney thinks of America (as it can be debated the Tea Party has some racism inherent - Grayson). Half of us are takers. Talk about disregard for a whole group of people. I’ll give him (Romney) credit that he was able to lump all kinds of races and groups in his dismissing. And not an ounce of truth in that BS. Matter of fact. I bet Romney’s comment goes down in history. How far is Grayson’s email crap gonna last?

It happens often in wartime that leaders who were not well regarded in peacetime come into their own. It happened during Operation: IRAQI FREEDOM as well. The focus had to shift from looking ‘ready to fight’ and looking good in general to actual combat capability. Many pre-2003 army officers could not adapt and so were relieved, separated, or they resigned.

After the first day of the battle of Shiloh, Union officers thought they should retreat and asked Sherman to talk to Grant.

Sherman: “Well, Grant, we’ve had the devil’s own day, haven’t we?”

Grant: “Yes. We´ll lick ‘em tomorrow, though.”

Grant knew that the arrival of Gen. Buell’s fresh troops would give him the edge the next day, while Gen. Beauregard would have only the same troops who had fought the entire day just ended.

Amen.

My aunt did 18 months in Iraq and another 24 months post-retirement attached to forces in Afghanistan. The human drain of these conflicts, both in lives lost and lives changed, cannot be overstated. Some people come out of it relatively well - I’m thankful my aunt did - but that’s not the case for so many.

Your aunt came out —but it affected her. The trauma was passed to her children and grandchildren.

The longer I am on earth, the more I think benefits of war are short-term, the negative affects are generational.

People don’t want to take the time for diplomacy and negotiation. Yet, the fallout of war takes much longer to clean-up.

Sad but true, the reality seems to be that this is a lesson every generation or two needs to learn for themselves. There’s certainly a political movement in Japan, for example, to strip the pacifist language out of the constitution, and it’s primarily driven by younger folk (with the general add-on of the folks who were against it when it happened). For a lot of the folks who actually grew up in the era during and after WWII, though, they’re very passionately against it.

At least we’re more honest about the direct effects on soldiers these days, in that the existence of PTSD is at least recognized.

I’m a big fan of the Walking Dead, but I have to leave my Biochemistry brain on the shelf. Otherwise, I start asking how anything that’s been dead more than a couple days can get its muscles to twitch, let alone move it around without falling down. I mean, this controlled toppling we call ‘walking’ is a highly complex process which takes a lot of coordination. Watch a baby’s feet when they first learn how to stand - they’re working HARD!

I became hooked on Maria Montessori when I heard a speech explaining her aphorism “The Child Makes the Man.”

paraphrased: “No man can teach a child to walk. The child’s brain is uniquely made to learn these things and the child must do it himself. All the adult can do is provide the environment, encouragement and support.

It’s rather humbling to understand this. Such a simple thing as walking, is really so complex an adult cannot teach it—and finds it extraordinarily difficult when because of illness or accident must relearn it. Notice I said “relearn”. Yet to watch a pre-verbal near infant learn, and it seems more like an adventure. One they master, usually within weeks or less. An adult, in physical therapy takes months to gain the same proficiency and it is accompanied by pain and tears.”

“Weinstein pledged earlier in the week to bring a lawsuit against the academy if the religious language is not dropped entirely from the oath.”

Yeah, that’s something that’s become more popular as people have become at least scientifically literate enough to understand that “It’s moves despite being dead” isn’t keeping with any understood scientific fact. So either they’re not really dead (“28 Days”), “technically dead” (“Resident Evil”), or dead but reanimated (“Walking Dead”).

Also, in Ridgeway, Colorado, there is a FANTASTIC microdistillery called Rail Town Still that makes a beautiful juniper gin. Just juniper, pretty much, instead of being the complex blend of botanicals like most gin these days. (I like those too, very much, but this was fantastically good.)

On the less extreme and therefore I have no awesome pictures side, an oven at 800 degrees C is hot enough that you cannot really get your bare hands within about 8 inches or so. Even a foot is pushing it.

These temperatures are more around the range of standard lava, but the amount of lava is going to increase how much you feel it because you have a larger surface radiating heat.

The other reason is because I have occasionally in my sales career needed to resort to direct lies about product scarcity or demand (never about customer needs or product functions, though) and so I have a tolerance for certain types of lie.

No decision is final, Dark. You can’t simply say “I’ll never change my mind on this”. It’s an impossible statement.

You should ask yourself why you need to make such reality-denying statements.

It’s worth pointing out that movement conservatism these days is based entirely on such categorical assertions. E.g., Taxes always need to be cut, regulations always need to be reduced, entitlements always need to be cut, affirmative action is wrong in all cases, etc., etc.

Back in the day, the conclusions were still the same, but the RW think tanks would present more or less plausible lines of reasoning to get there.

Now this stuff is just asserted as if it were self-evident, or a matter of religious dogma.

This, but they call them ‘Principles’, and thus they don’t need to derive them.

re: #302 Kragar

After the first day of the battle of Shiloh, Union officers thought they should retreat and asked Sherman to talk to Grant.

Sherman: “Well, Grant, we’ve had the devil’s own day, haven’t we?”

Grant: “Yes. We´ll lick ‘em tomorrow, though.”

Shiloh, depending on when you go and where on the battlefield you are, can be peaceful, creepy, or both.

I have a feeling that not being a valedictorian isn’t going to hurt this kid’s future one bit:

re: #354 Vicious Babushka

Define a living wage please.

The guy I’m renting a room from while I go to school keeps a supply of straws on hand because he can’t afford a dentist.

I suppose that’s not good enough for her, though.

Actually this kid has something significant to share.

I see many conservatives using either an authority figure or a mythical version of a past leader (a father or Ronald Reagan) as their higher power.

This is a 12-step term. Often those in recovery need to shift their higher power from a parent or a spouse or a boss to a non-human entity. Whatever that may be.

By using a human as a higher-power, one denies reality and stays in the cycle of addiction.

That may be, but since we were talking about shows where one’s science brain needs to be turned of…

Or not. Imagination drives science-no? How can one develop hypothesis with out imagination?

Often one has to accept that the knowledge or technical apparatus is not not yet available to understand what one wishes to understand. That does not mean it isn’t true —just that myth or superstition is all that is currently available to explain it.

Thus we use literary devices to suspend disbelief in order to tell a story or impart a truth.

That’s true.

But Hollywood special effects and science don’t necessarily have much to do with each other. Otherwise Mythbusters wouldn’t find so much material to work with on their shows.

It can be very frustrating to watch something and know that the special effects team went with what looks cool instead of what reality says will happen in a (generally) otherwise reality based movie. (I grant that Lord of the Rings is not the best one to use for this comparison, but it was the most recent occasion where I had this happen, so…) And so to actually enjoy the film as opposed to being frustrated at the fact that I will see this misunderstanding perpetuated, I turn off the science brain.
