Lou Reed (1942-2013)

RIP Lou. You will be missed.

Lou Reed, a massively influential songwriter and guitarist who helped shape nearly fifty years of rock music, died today. The cause of his death has not yet been released, but Reed underwent a liver transplant in May.

This solo version of “Some Kind of Love” is my favorite Lou Reed performance.

It’s strangely beautiful and poetic that he died on a Sunday morning.

RIP Lou Reed.

Lou Reed was one of the few really great artists.

To sit in a darkened room listening through “Magic and Loss” seems appropriate for this night.

He will be missed.

Rest in Peace, Lou.

Very sad. I was looking forward to seeing him rock out when he was in his 90’s.

I’ve loved his music for almost 40 years. This is one of my favorite videos, from Prozac Nation. The video is long, but it’s incredible in the middle, especially from 2:30 to 3:10.

He was a great, weird piece of American rock. Someone called him “a better guitarist than he really was”, and I know what they mean. He was an inspiration to most of my favorite dudes.

Lou Reed died today. And so did a bit of genius. Sweet Jane was my first song that I sang as I played guitar in my first band in my first paying gig around 1975/6. Half the room did not know it, but they did when we were done. He walked the talk. Take a walk on the Wild Side.

A box with a drawing of an EMACS window and some code it it? Perhaps the infamous context switching code from Unix System 6 that is commented “You are not expected to understand this” (because ken and dmr didn’t really understand it and replaced the whole module in System 7 … ;) )

Major bummer.

Lou Reed runs through a whole hell of a lot of American Rock ‘n’ Roll and music in general. I am always a big fan of songwriter musicians no matter the genre and Lou was that. He will be missed.

From NPR:
Update at 3:45 p.m. ET: Reed’s literary agent, Andrew Wylie, has confirmed to NPR that Reed died Sunday morning at 11, of complications related to his liver transplant. We’ve made slight changes to this post to reflect that confirmation. Our original post continues:

I know Lou Reed will be missed, but John Cale is the one I’ll miss. HIs albums from the Island years are just an absolute tour-de-force. And even his solo bootleg albums, where he often seems unwilling to sing in key, are wildly fun to listen to, once you’ve gotten acclimated.

As a long-suffering but dedicated Cleveland Browns fan, I am just glad the Browns gave them a game. Actually sounded like they scared the Chiefs and had a chance but muffed a punt and turned the ball over late. The Browns are not that bad…just need a quarterback…obviously not Brandon Weeden.

Also, what DO the Philadelphia Eagles see in Michael Vick? I would have already sent him packing by now.

“All through this, I’ve always thought that if you thought of all of it as a book then you have the Great American Novel, every record as a chapter,” he told Rolling Stone in 1987. “They’re all in chronological order. You take the whole thing, stack it and listen to it in order, there’s my Great American Novel.”

RIP, Lou.

Is there any other kind of Cleveland Browns fan? They don’t seem a like a team that would attract the fair-weather bandwagon jumper type of fan.

I am amused. Suck it, Jerry Jones. Haha.

Someone they think can run a workable read-option with their good running back, so-so offensive line, and defensive that is going to give up 20 pts or so a game (at least).

He’s still a decent QB. Even in his “elderly” state, he can still run the ball at a moment’s notice. He’s out with a hammy right now. I have a feeling he’ll be in the next wave of house cleaning at season’s end.

Having said that, given what a toxic waste site the NFC East is right now, the Eagles still have an actual legitimate chance of taking the division. God knows there won’t be any wildcard from the NFC East this year.

I’m saying Eagles win it and 8-8, LOL.

I thought after the Breaking Bad finale that Pale Blue Eyes would have been a better finishing song than the sappy Baby Blue by Badfinger. Way better song, you could better force an appropriate metaphor, and it carried the right tone (that was awesome and crazy but fucked up and really wrong.)

Lou Reed was a rock star in the best way. Who could be more cool than Lou Reed?

52 S'latch  Mon, Oct 28, 2013 5:23:06am

How very sad. Just last week, I had started to revisit some old Velvet Underground and Lou Reed favorites that I used to enjoy over 25 years ago. He will be missed.

53 electrotek  Mon, Oct 28, 2013 7:49:38pm

I really wished Lou Reed was well enough to attend his appearance at Coachella this year. Him, along with The Stone Roses and Blur, were the main reasons why I attended Coachella this year. I was bummed when he had to cancel, and now this news saddens me even greatly. :(

On another note, the shrieking harpy claims to be part of the NY punk scene
