Virginia Polling Shows the Continuing Implosion of the GOP Brand

Collapse
Poll • Views: 51,589

If you’re a member of the GOP establishment who wants to see Republicans win elections, the latest poll results from Virginia have to be your second worst nightmare: The Implosion of the GOP Brand, in One More Chart.

The interactive chart shows that the national GOP’s unfavorable rating in Virginia has spiked to 87 percent among nonwhite likely voters. It’s at 69 percent among women voters. And it’s at 69 percent among white college graduate voters — a number that is likely higher among college educated white women. White college grads — particularly women — are an increasingly important constituency to Democrats, and their preferences could have major implications for the GOP’s ability to win elections in the future with an overreliance on white voters.

And it is at 69 percent among independents. All of this mirrors another chart I posted last week that showed the GOP brand collapsing among key voter groups nationally.

Multiple observers — see Mark Murray and Taegan Goddard for examples — argue Virginia is increasingly resembling the country as a whole.

Why do I say it’s the GOP establishment’s second worst nightmare? Because their worst nightmare is the Tea Party base, who couldn’t care less about polls like this and are going to keep demanding still more far right ideological purity from Republican candidates.

Tea Party Leader: Ultraconservative Ken Cuccinelli Is Not Conservative Enough

Larry Nordvig, Executive Director of the Richmond Tea Party, told Breitbart News last month that “conservatives are highly concerned about Obamacare, immigration, and moral decline, and are looking for reassurance and leadership in those areas. Attorney General Cuccinelli has not taken a hard stand on those issues. The net effect is that he’s not exciting his base, which dampens campaign volunteer activism.”

But for Nordvig when he spoke with Breitbart in September, “re-engaging his base” was “even more critical for Attorney General Cuccinelli.”

“Cuccinelli is not going to win the money race,” Nordvig said. “That means he will stand, or fall, based on grassroots support. He has got to start reassuring conservatives that he will fight for their deepest-held beliefs. Oh, and it wouldn’t hurt to court the Tea Party a little more,” Nordvig added. “We’re the major component of the grassroots support he needs to win.”

What sucks, is that while I don’t like Republicans and the policies that they currently embrace, we need opposition voices in government, we need oversight, and we need people that want to serve who believe in concept of government. Cripes if these nihilistic fuckers don’t want to participate, buy a compound in Idaho and pay your taxes and we’ll leave you alone, just have the courtesy to keep from pissing on the rest of us.

As the far right (which is now the core constituency of the Republican Party) becomes more marginalized, the membership has increasingly become more radical in both their rhetoric and actions.

Whats worse is that talk of things like secession and the violent overthrow of the government has become so commonplace, that the psyche of mainstream America (both media and general population) has been dulled to the ravings and basically ignore it now.

He hasn’t taken a hard enough stand with Obamacare? What planet is this guy on?

Cuccinelli was among the AGs who sued to block Obamacare implementation and then watched as the Supreme Court upheld the individual mandate, and created a whole world of crazy with striking down the part dealing with Medicaid expansion (screwing those in the states that refused to expand the coverage in the process).

re: #18 dog philosopher

Doubt it. Some folks would vote GOP regardless. Others Democrats. Still others would vote DudeBros or Green or TP or LolWut or whatever you can dream up.

But it is telling that the GOP needs to lie and obfuscate about the health care law to get people to buy into their view. And that’s not when they’re trying to depress voter turnout or gerrymandering to hold on to the districts they’re in.

It’s closer to 70% now.

Which is why Republicans are so gung-ho on voter suppression and disenfrancishement efforts, including overturning the Voting Rights Act.

If there were ever 99% - hell, even 75% - voter turnout, the GOP would be little more than a tiny minority party at the national level. Granted, they’d still have their strongholds, but high voter turnout is their worst nightmare.

Cruz To Join Christian Nation Activists In South Carolina

Ted Cruz and Tim Scott will be joining Religious Right leaders in South Carolina, an early primary state, in the beginning of November for a Renewal Project conference organized by David Lane.

Lane believes that the US may soon face car bombings as a form of divine retribution over gay rights and legal abortion, and believes that his Renewal Projects can activate enough pastors and conservative voters to save America.

Wayne Slater of the Dallas Morning News reports that Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) will be attending as well. It is a tad ironic that Lee, a Mormon, would be addressing a summit hosted by Lane, who promoted attacks against “the false god of Mormonism” during the last primary campaign against Mitt Romney. But Lane’s push to move the GOP towards embracing the Religious Right’s agenda has made him a weighty figure, as over the summer Republican leaders including Cruz, Rand Paul and Reince Priebus attended his Iowa summit.

Please proceed.

smellfungus

PRONUNCIATION:
(smel-FUNG-uhs)

MEANING:
noun: A habitual faultfinder or complainer.

ETYMOLOGY:
After Smelfungus, a hypercritical character in Laurence Sterne’s 1768 novel, A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy. Earliest documented use: 1807.

NOTES:
Novelist Laurence Sterne modeled his character Smelfungus after traveler and author Tobias Smollett who complained about almost everything in his 1766 travel book Travels through France and Italy. Here’s how Sterne describes Smelfungus:
“The learned Smelfungus travelled from Boulogne to Paris, from Paris to Rome, and so on; but he set out with the spleen and jaundice, and every object he pass’d by was discoloured or distorted. He wrote an account of them, but ‘twas nothing but the account of his miserable feelings.”

USAGE:
“And a couple of smellfungus from the Official Paper … carped that Issel chose to jump when the schedule reached its toughest stretch.”
Paige Woody; Issel is the Wrong Scapegoat in Nuggets’ Mess; Denver Post; Feb 13, 1995.

Meanwhile, one more reason why I won’t visit China.

Well, this is horrifying. Street vendors in China have taken to using something called “gutter oil”—quite literally the oil gathered from gutter runoff, dumpster sludge, garbage juice, and untreated fucking sewage fuck fuck fuck—to cook food for human consumption. And then unwitting humans are consuming that food. As you might guess, not everyone’s happy about that.

This paragraph is gonna be really gross. So, evidently, the way it works is, gutter-oil-makers root around in dumpsters, trashcans, sewers oh God sewers, and (of course) gutters, looking for used oil or discarded food or solid waste or dead fucking animals, and then they process that putrid crud (this probably entails heating it to render any fats into oil, then straining out the solids) and sell the resulting distillation of pure horror as a cooking agent. Then street vendors use it to cook what is presumably already F-grade meat. Then people purchase and eat the “food” cooked in this effluvium of evil. Then you read about it on the internet and become a raw-food evangelist.

Well, little chance of me ever going to China, anyway. But for the poor schlubs eating from those “food” carts, at least the authorities are doing a little bit of work trying to stop it.

“Chinese authorities busted a black-market gutter-oil operation back in April, seizing 3,200 tons of gutter oil which had been rendered from rotten animal carcasses. By the time of the sting, the operation had already sold an estimated $1.6 million in carcass-juice. To food vendors. For cooking food in it.”

According to someone like Rand Paul, those people frying food in feces would eventually be forced out of the market by people refusing to patronize their food cart. Of course, the cost to society until such time as the feces fryers are out of business would be pretty high. But, eggs, omelettes, etc.

I think the first time I was in Tijuana would have been around 1965 or so, then every couple of years until the late 70’s. My month-long trip was in ‘78 I think. I left southern California in 1981. Now when I go, it’s a village across the border from NM. It’s really poor. And had drug cartel activity for a few years that almost killed its tourism, including the medical/dental tourism. It has nothing else.

Because of changes in how my grad school offered student health insurance, I had to decline to sign up for their plan so that we weren’t double-paying once I got married (and therefore got access to a much better plan).

Good news on healthcare rates:

“The bids submitted by insurers provide clear evidence that the Marketplace is encouraging plans to compete for consumers, resulting in more affordable rates,” Sebelius said. Not only did the initial premiums in the marketplace beat expectations, she says, but some insurers have lowered their rates even further.

“In Oregon, two plans requested to lower their rates by 15 percent or more,” she says. “New York State has said, on average, the approved 2014 rates for even the highest coverage levels of plans individual consumers can purchase through its Marketplace (gold and platinum) represent a 53 percent reduction compared to last year’s direct-pay individual market rates.”

Whuh, says she. “I had to go to court—“den of vipers” is in [some bible verse he quoted], they’re lawyers,” sez he, loading an 18 pack of beer on the belt.

I wondered if court was for a DUI in that big old over-sized truck he put the beer in.

Actually, it’s Matthew 23:33 which refers to a “generation” of vipers, from a John the Baptist rant, in the KJ version: “Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” Other versions use, “brood”, “offspring”, “children”, etc.

“Den of vipers” allegedly was in a quotation from Andrew Jackson about bankers, but there is some question as to whether he actually said it or not.

“Generation of Vipers” was also a jeremiad by Philip Wylie on the American way of life written in 1942.

I see that the MSNBC vote on Snowden is now up to 72% for “traitor”.

Speaking of “traitors” or not, I’m researching one of my 4th great grandfathers. I discovered last night that he was probably in the Revolutionary War, in the so called “German Battalion”. It’s an interesting bit of history, and of propaganda. These were ethnic Germans living in PA and MD who were recruited in part as a way of making an antithesis to the Hessians, proving one could be “German” and pro-Revolution.

I wonder what MSNBC would have polled in 1776?

Hmm… that raid that nabbed a major terror figure almost included an even higher ranking terror master tied to the Benghazi attack that killed Ambassador Stevens. The administration opted not to launch that raid for fear of destabilizing the Libyan government even further.

U.S. special operations forces were ready, if ordered, to enter Benghazi and capture Ahmed Abu Khattalah, a leading figure in the Ansar Al-Sharia militia. But the mission never materialized.

The United States believes Ansar Al-Sharia was behind the September 2012 armed assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

President Barack Obama has openly said it is a “priority” to bring the Benghazi suspects “to justice.” The FBI continues to investigate the attack and Khattalah is under federal indictment, CNN’s Evan Perez has reported.

The FBI has also published photographs of people seen at the compound on the night of the raid that it wants to talk to.

U.S. intelligence agencies and military special operations forces have moved in and out of Libya for several months with the permission of the Libyan government. They are looking for opportunities to capture alleged suspects in the Benghazi attack, developing a list of nearly a dozen individuals.

I feel like there is this core group of conservatives who just can’t see that we are living in 2013. It’s like the rest of us are waiting for 3-D printers to become mainstream, and they are bitching because they can’t find new ribbons for their typewriters.

They may not have agreed with Kelly, or with “stop and frisk” but they acted like Nazis. How do they know what he was going to say, or could they not ask questions, and have a dialogue about their concerns and the practice?

re: #142 darthstar

Snowden’s revelations are still causing major waves in national, and international, security circles. German newsmagazine Der Spiegel recently found that the National Security Agency had been monitoring German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cellphone (and had been doing so since as early as 2002), causing many to question why the U.S. would listen in on its allies.*

Got to fly over Troy on that exercise, in a C-141. Hissarlik was in the operational area. We were drilling a notional reinforcement of Hellespont defense. No beautiful women, no apple, no freaking snakes.

If you don’t believe these topics were discussed by the progressive wing ad infinitum nauseam onlineum, I’ve got a handful of 500-comment posts (aka Tbogg unit) at my old hangout I’ll trade you for bitcoins and pogs. I’m no expert political strategist, but it’s so painfully obvious why the GOP is imploding and yet people who make way, way more money than I do seem to be completely oblivious to reality.

It’s pretty simple, isn’t it?

In Franklin’s Tower, which was written over thirty eight years ago, Robert Hunter penned the lyrics:

“If you plant ice, you’re going to harvest wind”.

It’s a cold wind, too, and it spells the death of relevancy for the Rs if they don’t get shed of these idiots as if they were fleas and nits.

re: #81 ProTARDISLiberal

When I visited China we saw one day these three little old ladies fighting each other over our thrown-out water bottles. It was a funny scene, but then later on we were being toured through the hutongs (sp?) and saw where the bottles were going, and why they were so desired: from Beijing’s taps, these bottles were being refilled and resealed … the same taps that we were warned not to drink from because of the high prevalance of Hepatitis B in the population.

Anything you get off the street in Beijing is probably suspect. Food or otherwise.
