Got new ATT U-vers internet connection, first test of the ‘net with it. Lots faster. Me like a lot. Amazing what they can do with thin copper wire.

Looks as if Kathleen Sebelius got through the hearing fairly well today. I haven’t dug into the previous big thread. I imagine there is much discussion there, so off to check out some of what’s being said by lizards.

The key takeaway from the Lizard discussion is that a 1200 baud modem was much better than a 300 baud, and RAM prices used to be of the devil.

Banksy Nazi picture auctioned off for New York charity

news.yahoo.com

New York (United States) (AFP) - British artist Banksy has donated a “vandalized” oil painting to a New York thrift shop to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for HIV patients and the homeless.

“It is the latest stunt in the graffiti superstar’s month-long pop up exhibition on the streets of the US city which has fascinated hipsters and enraged critics.

(snip)

“Bids opened at $74,000 and have already risen to at least $220,200 with some expecting them to reach $1 million on the website biddingforgood.com by the time the auction closes Thursday evening.”

U.S. senator vows to block Yellen, Johnson nominations

reuters.com

(Reuters) - A senior Republican U.S. senator vowed on Wednesday to block confirmation of President Barack Obama’s nominees to head the Federal Reserve and the Department of Homeland Security if the administration does not provide more information about the 2012 attack on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi, Libya.

“Senator Lindsey Graham said he would put a hold on the nomination of Janet Yellen to head the Fed and Jeh Johnson to take the homeland security post as a last resort after trying repeatedly to get more information on the Benghazi matter.

“That is the only leverage we have,” the South Carolina Republican told a news conference.”

Jesus Christ, this is the current 240 px headline at CNN right now:

While Sebelius gets grilled, ‘the system is down’

Swear to God, they must have had an editorial meeting right after the shutdown and said, “Okay, now we go after the Democrats, because that would only be fair.”

The ACA problems need to be discussed, but FFS, isn’t there way to do it other than channeling William Randolph Hearst?

I’d also love to see how they reported the Medicare Part D rollout that got bolloxed up. There probably wasn’t half of the “OMZG it’s a disaster!” that they’re doing with the ACA…

They gave me a good deal. Since I was one of their DSL users, they waived all fees, gave me the new modem, which also WiFis my house. $39.95 a month for the Max Package which is 12mbps.

I would have liked to go to the 18 or 24mdps systems, but I have to watch my budget since I am transitioning from full time job, which ended a year ago to freelancer. I also turned off my old hard wired phone and am moving to a newer 4g smartphone. I figured being out trying to get work a smartphone would be more important than a hard-wired phone if I had to cut one or the other. Also hacked back my TV package…and hope to get signed up to new Healthcare later today or first thing in the morning. That will be an ACA qualified policy at $45 less a month.

NSA infiltrates links to Yahoo, Google data centers worldwide, Snowden documents say

washingtonpost.com

“The National Security Agency has secretly broken into the main communications links that connect Yahoo and Google data centers around the world, according to documents obtained from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden and interviews with knowledgeable officials.

“By tapping those links, the agency has positioned itself to collect at will from among hundreds of millions of user accounts, many of them belonging to Americans. The NSA does not keep everything it collects, but it keeps a lot.

(snip)

“The NSA’s principal tool to exploit the data links is a project called MUSCULAR, operated jointly with the agency’s British counterpart, GCHQ. From undisclosed interception points, the NSA and GCHQ are copying entire data flows across fiber-optic cables that carry information between the data centers of the Silicon Valley giants.”
