French Newspaper LeMonde Admits Getting NSA Story Wrong, Greenwald Still Digging

Don’t expect a correction from Greenwald
World • Views: 22,610

French newspaper LeMonde is reporting today that NSA officials were not lying when they said the recent stories about NSA data collection in France and Spain were “completely false:” Surveillance: DGSE transmitted the data to the American NSA (Google Translate).

According to our information, collected from a senior official of the intelligence community in France, the direction of the French foreign service, the DGSE, has, in fact, established in from late 2011 and early 2012, a Memorandum of data exchange with the United States.

France has a strategic position for transportation of electronic data. The submarine cables by which most data from transit Africa and Afghanistan landed at Marseilles and Penmarc in Britain . These strategic areas are within the reach of the French DGSE, which intercepts and stores much of what flows between France and abroad.

[…]

So it seems, a priori, partly true, that some of the data transmitted over the telephone French soil is transmitted in accordance with cooperation agreements, and without sorting, the DGSE to the NSA. It is therefore data concerning French citizens receiving these communications as foreign geographic areas using these channels as well.

That’s right — this is confirmation that the axis of Greenwald totally screwed up this story and jumped to a conclusion that was exactly opposite of the truth. (And it’s very noticeable that LeMonde doesn’t actually apologize for getting this so very wrong.)

Should we start a countdown for Glenn Greenwald to retract his now-debunked story? I’m kidding, of course. He hasn’t corrected any of the other egregious errors he’s made since he started reporting the NSA leaks; why would he start now?

The Mighty Greenwald was last seen digging in and defending his story by insinuating that the NSA was lying:

Of course, it would be pretty dumb for the NSA to lie about something like this, when it could easily be denied by France or Spain. But Greenwald’s obviously counting on his audience not thinking it through.

Greenwald says: On NSA Claims About Misreporting of Two Slides.

It’s certainly possible that, like all journalists, we’ll make a mistake at some point. And if and when that does happen, we’ll do what good journalists do: do further reporting and, if necessary, correct any inaccuracy. But no evidence of any kind (as opposed to unverified NSA accusations) has been presented that this was the case here, and ample evidence strongly suggests it was not.

His “evidence” is complete nonsense, but it shows how he got it wrong. He reads things into the words that aren’t there.

France has a strategic position for transportation of electronic data. The submarine cables by which most data from transit Africa and Afghanistan landed at Marseilles and Penmarc in Britain (shouldn’t this be Brittany, and not Britain - as in the UK?). These strategic areas are within the reach of the French DGSE, which intercepts and stores much of what flows between France and abroad.

So, they’re “tapping” the undersea cables and storing the data that flows through them - including potentially data that is transmitted to and from the US to Africa and Afghanistan.

In other words, the French DGSE are doing the same thing that everyone else thinks the NSA is doing. The DGSE is vacuuming up all data coming through the cables that come ashore and they’re not only intercepting, but storing it all.

Further, the DGSE is sharing their findings (because that information might help avert attacks against France and its allies - which has repeatedly come in the line of fire from terror groups based in Algeria and North Africa generally). The NSA might get a look at some of the data, and there’s probably reciprocity involved as well.

But Greenwald thinks that everything is NSA? That’s a mighty large leap in conclusions. Not surprising, but that’s Greenwald for you.

Commenter on TPM just pointed out a very great defense to the whole “rate spike” charge by ACA critics, namely that the law has protection from that shit built in. If people do indeed sign up for plans in ‘14 that are more expensive but 80% of the money paid doesn’t go to claims next year, then they get a nice fat check from the insurance company in ‘15 for having overpaid.

In other words those people bitching that they don’t need everything that comes with a basic plan because they won’t use it will be happy in ‘15 when they get a check for all the services they didn’t use.

And it also ignores that people are comparing apples to zombies. ACA policies are far more comprehensive than some of the policies being offered up as proof of rate spikes, ignoring that the person would further be eligible for subsidies that bring the cost down significantly.

Same deal with stories that supposedly cause massive hikes in insurance costs to college students. That ignores that the policies previously offered were not worth the money they charged, and that these college students could either now get included in their parents’ comprehensive policies, or they could get their own policies that are more comprehensive and be eligible for subsidies that reflect the fact that they’re not making a whole lot of money (that they’re college students after all).

I’m remembering the SNL Hot Wings sketch from back in the day.

Customer #2: What is this huh? Just tell me where the super fire hot wings are and I’ll go get them myself.

Manager: Alright alright you win. Here they are.

Customer #2: [looks left, then right; screen freezes with scrolling message narrated by Phil Hartman, and surrendering music playing]

Message: As Scott Hanson bit into the chicken wing, his head turned a bright beet red and large amounts of smoke began to billow from his ears. Within seconds his eyes had become slot machine tumblers which spun around until both landed on the symbol for chili peppers. Next, bolting up from his chair and shouting ‘woo-woo’, Scott chugged around the room like a locomotive finally shooting through the root of ‘Ron’s Wings N’ Things’ and exploding high over the Buffalo night sky. In an ironic footnote to the story, the chicken wing Scott had was only a hot wing and not the super fire hot wing he had ordered.

My understanding is that the claim that the uterine lining is thinned is accurate, and this is why many women on birth control experience lighter periods; the primary method of blocking conception is by stopping ovulation, however.

I don’t have any good studies to link to or anything of that nature, though, because most of this knowledge is just what I’ve learned through almost 17 years of being on birth control of one form or another.

What Klys said, plus if there’s no egg, who cares what the lining is like?

Because BABY! And also, slut.

I’ll add a note that it’s mostly the hormonal forms that will thin the uterus lining and prevent ovluation; a copper IUD functions differently (makes the environment toxic to the egg) and is frequently not recommended in cases where a woman already has cramps or heavy periods because it’s known to make these issues worse.

But seriously, sometimes eggs are going to fail to implant anyway. A fertilized egg is not a baby. It is not even a fetus. It needs a little more development to get to that point.

None of that will convince the “life begins at conception” crowd, unfortunately.

According to Planned Parenthood:

The hormones in the pill work by

Keeping eggs from leaving the ovaries. Pregnancy cannot happen if there is no egg to join with sperm.
Making cervical mucus thicker. This keeps sperm from getting to the eggs.

Israel suspected in blast at Syrian missile base

Reports of a large explosion at a Syrian missile base near the Mediterranean coast town of Latakia have raised the question of whether Israel staged another airstrike against advanced weapons systems possibly intended for Lebanon’s Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

The last alleged Israeli air strike in Syria was in early July, when Israeli jets over the Mediterranean fired long-range missiles at a Syrian military base north of Latakia. The alleged target was a consignment of advanced Russian P-800 Yakhont missiles that Israel believed were destined for Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Subsequent reports claimed that the P-800 Yakhonts were not destroyed in the air strike as they had already been moved, raising the prospect of another Israeli attempt to attack the missile consignment.

Unless it’s the Catholics, then it’s “one of God’s mysteries, so just shut up.”
I still remember that answer to myriad questions when I was in Catholic grade school, back in another century…

Birth control allows unauthorized sexy time to occur which is the same exact thing as late term abortion you baby killing genocide thing outrage.///

That’s pretty much it.

Birth control allows for unauthorized sexytimes and the morning after pill allows for a woman to safely protect herself after the condom breaks or she gets caught up in a drunken moment or whatever. That’s why these nutjobs will go out of their way to fight against both of them.

Anything that gives a woman power over her own body and her reproductive system is bad. That destroys their narrative that all sex outside of married procreative sex is evil. We can’t allow that.

194 klys  Thu, Oct 31, 2013 1:15:15pm

I will just say they can pry my birth control from my cold, dead fingers (metaphorically speaking, ahem).

Going after birth control really makes it clear that this is about controlling women and has nothing at all to do with TEH BABBEHS. (Not saying that the perhaps misguided person whose statements led to the start of this discussion believes that, but the whole mess about paying for contraception is a pretty clear indication that that’s the motivation of the religious right.)

And yet they’ll bitch and moan over the fact that the President’s spending time at Camp David or traveling away from the WH.

But this all fits with the GOP strategy to starve government by any and all means. If they’re not in DC to “govern”, they wont take necessary steps to produce on-time budgets, conduct proper oversight, etc., and they further figure that it’s an election year, so they have to spend time in their district pandering to their extremist core.

It’s that or the fact that they’ve sent ratings cratering towards China, that they don’t want to do anything to disturb the notion that we’re dealing with a know-nothing and do-nothing GOP House.

Rodriguez said Wednesday that he never stated that the U.N. would take control, but that he merely provided a “cautionary tale.”

So, tonight is the drop dead day for the big project.

Management has just decided no one can go home until its done and for everyone to assist.

The guys running the show on the ground have said that taking the time to train people how to do the work would use up more time and just mean even less work gets completed before the deadline at this point.

Nice work assholes.

The best evah was a friend of mine who after 4 kids (two unplanned) had her tubes tied, and her husband had a vasectomy. She came in a pregnancy costume. Nothing overboard, just her normal self with a big belly.

I nearly screamed.

Yeah, well, I know lots of people who admit that the Dems take suggestions from Republicans, and know they include Republican proposals in the laws Dems write and will have bipartisan committees, and admit Republicans give up nothing in return….and they still think Democrats are still totally partisan.

Some people become police because they are noble and upright citizens who want to defend the weak and dispense justice on the unlawful. Some people become police because they get off on telling other people what to do. Unfortunately, the latter category are usually pretty good at hiding it until after they get the job.

Naw, Obama got peak hatred. They’ll have washed up on the rocks and be in ebb tide by the time Hillary runs. Yes, we’ll see some of the old anti Clinton bullshit, but the racism won’t be there and half of the conservative women will either support Hillary or stay home unless the GOP nominates a female for President, which won’t happen.

By 2016 the GOP and Tea Party will have been at each other’s throats for years, it’s going to be a hot, disorganized mess. If Hillary runs, barring an unforeseeable catastrophe or scandal she’ll win in a landslide.

Part of today’s OFA email:

There are a lot of ways Obamacare provides better,
more affordable care for millions of Americans.

But if any of the following apply to you, you might be
on your own…

Obamacare covers vision appointments for children —
sadly, it doesn’t cover care for supernatural eyesight.

Obamacare removed lifetime limits on coverage. It
doesn’t extend into the afterlife.

Obamacare covers children with pre-existing conditions.
It does not protect you from something you loved in
your childhood coming back to haunt you.

Obamacare covers an annual wellness visit where you
could talk to your doctor about dizzy spells. It can’t
prevent someone from putting a spell on you.

Obamacare covers maternity and newborn care. It can’t
help if you give birth to Satan’s son.

Exactly. Sociopaths are very good at getting thru the psych testing and such. It’s a scary thing. Especially, when they attempt to become part of the Judicial system. Or the Executive, Legislative Systems. Or Religious Organizations …

Niece is the one with green hair and much facial piercings, but she is an amazing makeup artist and in great demand.

re: #322 wrenchwench

Right, but the demographics shift intrinsically. The barely concealed racism is able to function because blacks are a minority in this country, whereas voting age women actually outnumber men. This makes it so much riskier a tactic to double down on, especially against the first female candidate for President.

Think about how Obama won by getting overwhelming support from minority subgroups, gays, hispanics / latinos, blacks, asians to offset his weaker support among whites, especially white men. Now extrapolate from the historic levels of support those subgroups already provide to the Democratic Party, subtract the racism and figure that support by white, older, married women shifts significantly towards the Democratic candidate.

If you’re a Republican operative, strategist or pollster looking at 2016 you’re looking for individual House and Senate seats to focus on, because the Presidency is almost certainly a lost cause. And this is before you factor in any add on effects from the GOP / Tea Party civil war.

I guess I shouldn’t have told the waiter I wanted the hottest curry they had. They’re probably laughing their asses off back in the kitchen.

he said “you will remember me tomorrow”.
