If You Accuse Rand Paul of Plagiarism, He’d Like to Kill You

That’s what a duel is
Wingnuts • Views: 31,818

Loony libertarian Rand Paul is feeling the heat from criticisms that he has repeatedly engaged in plagiarism in his speeches, and today on ABC’s This Week he expressed a desire to kill his critics: Rand Paul on Plagiarism Charges: If Dueling Were Legal in Kentucky…

Sen. Rand Paul said Sunday that accusations of plagiarism in his speeches makes [sic] him wish dueling were legal in Kentucky.

“I take it as an insult, and I will not lie down and say people can call me dishonest, misleading or misrepresenting — I have never intentionally done so and like I say, ‘If dueling were legal in Kentucky, if they keep it up, you know it’d be a duel challenge,’ ” Paul said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Yes, that’s what he’s saying; if it were legal, he’d really like to go all 187 on Rachel Maddow.

It’s a joke, of course! One of those hilarious knee-slappers the right wing is famous for.

What’s it with wingnuts and joking about killing? And Rand it seems you did plagiarize so get the hell over yourself and confront the allegations like a man instead of pining for the antebellum days like you always do.

Fun Kentucky factoid: The oath of office for governor specifically mentions dueling.

I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of this Commonwealth, and be faithful and true to the Commonwealth of Kentucky so long as I continue to be a citizen thereof, and that I will faithfully execute, to the best of my ability, the office of Governor according to law; and I do further solemnly swear that since the adoption of the present Constitution, I, being a citizen of this state, have not fought a duel with deadly weapons within this state, nor out of it, nor have I sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, nor have I acted as second in carrying a challenge, nor aided or assisted any person thus offending, so help me God.”[46]

Well it’s a good thing that Rand’s merely a senator.// Seriously what’s wrong with this guy? I mean I get it, he’s offended that he had his integrity question. Biden got accused of plagiarism too but Biden didn’t talk about killing the accuser either.

Poor baby is upset, and so glad dueling is illegal because it means he can threaten to duel knowing it isn’t possible. It gives him a nice safe place to play the badly maligned victim who would do something manly to recover his honour if only the bad government didn’t prevent it.

His problem is he didn’t have any honor in the first place. For Maddow to have questioned his honor, it’s something he would have had to possess in the first place.

“If dueling were legal in Kentucky….”

My money would be on Maddow. True, there is no evidence she has any interest in shooting or guns but given her focus, steel nerves, and general intelligence a couple of weeks of intensive training and practice might do the trick. This is especially so since it would be unencumbered by the usual trainload of right-wing macho emotional baggage.

Maddow is liable to choose foils (instead of the pistols he is counting on) and then run him through with one.

1. Rand is a tough guy and he is not going to let the mainstream media get him and stop his one-man saving of America.

2. Rachel Maddow is gay. Need I say more?

3. Maybe. Wiki and arts are here for our taking. Is this any different than many Republicans stealing songs for campaigns and not attributing or acknowledging the artist does like your politics.

Base politics at best. It seems to be the only place many Republicans want to play these days.

I also get the feeling Rand is gonna blow. Just wait until he commits to a national election process. He is going to get ripped to shreds and his not going to like it. He’ll say something really stupid and over the top. I think he can be counted on for that.

The Internet Archive scans Paul’s site regularly. As of this writing, the last two scans happened on October 24 and November 2.

My impression is that their scans can sometimes be incomplete. Nevertheless there is reason to think that the deletion efforts may not work as well as intended, especially if the alleged plagiarism was a regular, longstanding practice. Here, for example, is the transcript of Paul’s speech to the Values Voters Summit.

62 BaronHaynes  Sun, Nov 3, 2013 11:51:59am

It’s generally a bad idea to look up to politicians as saviors, but Rand Paul is among the ones that get that treatment anyway (fwiw, so was Obama in some circles, and so is Ted Cruz). The libertarian fantasy that he’s a serious legislator and is the only one who has the real principles of the country at heart is frequently deflated by weird stuff like this. He just seems to think that negative labels never apply to him, no matter how accurately they describe his behavior, for reasons he can’t articulate.

Of course, no politician is ever going to admit to being a plagiarist, but there’s a tried-and-true method of apologizing for a “lapse in judgment” or whatever and then staying quiet on the topic for a long time. Or, you can take the “how dare you” approach and try to turn it around on your critics, no matter how stupid you look, and hope it eventually disappears.

BTW, I guarantee a lot of the same conservatives who are coming up with creative explanations or deflections on his behalf have absolutely no problem with sneering at Joe Biden for doing 30 years ago. Or that whole thing with Obama borrowing (with permission!) bits of speeches from Deval Patrick in 2008. Rand Paul lifting text from Wikipedia or news articles verbatim, though…it comes off more as lazy than anything.

This has been up on Buzzfeed this weekend, don’t know if you’ve missed it:

Three Pages Of Rand Paul’s Book Were Plagiarized From Think Tanks

An entire section of Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul’s 2013 book Government Bullies was copied wholesale from a 2003 case study by the Heritage Foundation, BuzzFeed has learned. The copied section, 1,318 words, is by far the most significant instance reported so far of Paul borrowing language from other published material.

The new cut-and-paste job follows reports by BuzzFeed, Politico, and MSNBC that Paul had plagiarized speeches either from Wikipedia or news reports. The book was published in August 2013 by Center Street, a division of Hachette Book Group.

In this case, Paul included a link to the Heritage case study in the book’s footnotes, though he made no effort to indicate that not just the source, but the words themselves, had been taken from Heritage.

70 jvic  Sun, Nov 3, 2013 12:27:59pm

With the transcript deletions, Paul doubled down on a bad situation. (“It’s not the crime that gets you, it’s the coverup.”)

He can double down again by noting that Andrew Jackson—Democrat!—fought a duel, or, citing Harry Truman—Democrat!!—and the music critic, by threatening a specific reporter with bodily harm.

That’ll work. /

I’d like to be assured that the specialist I from whom I sought treatment had completed a residency in that specialty and had passed testing for it. I think we’ve all seen some of the results of plastic surgery, for instance, in which physicians without the requisite training and testing have tried to cash in. Just imagine someone practicing heart or brain surgery without it.

I don’t think I’d allow “Dr. Paul” to operate on me if I had cataracts. We think he graduated from Duke Medical School, he says he did, but other than that, we don’t know about his residency, or other than he says he was Board certified at one point by the American Board of Ophthalmology, then refused to be re-certified under their changed rules, establishing his own “board”.

Rand Paul Chooses National Board Of Ophthalmology Certification instead of ABO

forums.studentdoctor.net

“Beth Ann Slembarski, administrator for the American Board of Ophthalmology, said less than 5 percent of the nation’s practicing ophthalmologists aren’t certified through her organization.”

So, how many are actually certified or “recertified” under the Paulists?

There were approximately 18,305 ophthalmologists in the US in 2009.

The least successful duel I ever read about was between a bully, who made a point of challenging people who were not the best at any form of fighting, and a supposed victim.

The victim chose stonemason’s hammers as the weapons and a coal cellar with the door closed as the venue. Neither could even lift the weapons and even if they could they couldn’t find their opponent.

I don’t condone cheating. But I would sometimes spread misinformation. This is a great tactic. Misinformation can be very important.”

He went on to describe studying for a pathology test with friends in the library. “We spread the rumor that we knew what was on the test and it was definitely going to be all about the liver,” he said. “We tried to trick all of our competing students into over-studying for the liver” and not studying much else.

“So, that’s my advice,” he concluded. “Misinformation works.
