Rafael Cruz, father of Ted Cruz: “Evolution is a Communist lie”

Also, gay rights endanger children
Wingnuts • Views: 28,456

YouTube

Pastor Rafael Cruz dips more than just his foot into the wingnut wading pool:

You know communism or socialism, whatever you want to call it, what is happening in this country is not different than what happened in Cuba; the procedure might be different, they may be a little slower, but it’s the same thing. It is about government control of your lives. You got to realize how Marxist, how socialism works. We need to understand the issues. When you hear all these things about homosexual marriage, this has nothing to do with homosexual rights. Did you know that? The whole objective is the destruction of the traditional family, it has nothing to do with homosexuals, they could care less about homosexuals, they want to destroy the family.

You need to understand, it’s just like evolution. You know most Americans have their head in the sand about evolution. I’ve met so many Christians that tell me ‘evolution is a scientific fact.’ Baloney! I am a scientist, there is nothing scientific about evolution. But you know something, Karl Marx said it, ‘I can use the teachings of Darwin to promote communism.’ Why? Because communism, or call it socialism if you think communism is too hard a word, necessitates for government to be your god and for government to be your god they need to destroy the concept of God. That’s why communism and evolution go hand and hand. Evolution is one of the strongest tools of Marxism because if they can convince you that you came from a monkey, it’s much easier to convince you that God does not exist.

Dear Mr. Cruz,

Since American is so like Cuba now then there is no reason to stay in this country. Please go back there and take your son with you. It’s your home and seemingly so familiar to you, why would you need to burden yourselves with another country falling under that black cloud of communism. Get out before there is no hope! Save yourselves.

Thank You.

PS. Maybe you don’t want to go back because you know that if you were in Cuba you’d never get away with what you are doing right now right here in America. Plus, I imagine you have a pretty good thing going on monetarily too, so that also may make you delay your leaving America. So, all I am left with is the thought that you and your son are wacky tea drinking political gadabouts trolling for profit. Save us…from your bullshit.

This guy left Cuba when he was what, 17, 18? He didn’t understand Marxism then, and he doesn’t understand it now. While Marx was an admirer of Darwin’s theory (in fact, both admired each other’s scholarly works but never met), and did mention it in Das Kapital as being a “natural” component of his overall economic theory, it didn’t form the basis for his work, nor did Marx or Engel’s work influence Darwin. They were separate disciplines, and neither intruded on the other.

Cruz’s entire story about what he did in Cuba is, to me, suspect. He no more followed Castro and “fought” with him than I did. What 14 yr old who didn’t know Castro was a communist would have put his life on the line for something he didn’t understand? What parents would have allowed it? I can’t prove he didn’t, but he can’t prove he did, either. It’s just part of the persona he’s invented for himself. People tend to love these stories of swinging from one extreme to another, esp when it’s from left to right.

And BTW, what is this “I am a scientist, there is nothing scientific about evolution”? Cruz earned a BS in math, and as far as I have read, earned no higher degrees. Getting oil on your hands doesn’t make you a “scientist”. This guy really stretches it. A lot.

As far as LGBT rights, I can remember meeting a couple of people who went on the Venceremos Brigades back in the 60s, and returned to relate how the Cuban govt would not allow gays to participate in visiting—they were considered “undesirables”. It was a very conservative attitude in Cuba toward gays, which surprised a lot of people. When Batista was in power, though, everything was wide open—esp if you had plenty of money.

A lot of being able to sell ideas has to do with projecting belief in them. My crazy ex-boss reputedly could sell dirty socks, mostly because of his ability to project his belief in what he was saying. He didn’t always REALLY believe it, but you were absolutely certain he did. According to legend, he got one company to commit $30 Million on the basis of a smudgy band on a Southern Blot.

Boll may be a terrible director of execrable films, but there is a sense in which he’s a director. There is no sense in which Rafael Cruz is a Scientist.

This article has multiple issues. Please help improve it or discuss these issues on the talk page.
This article does not discuss any of Uwe Boll’s films beyond 2008, and yet it is incomplete. (February 2013)
This article may need to be rewritten entirely to comply with Wikipedia’s quality standards, as it doesn’t follow the general template for directors. It is fragmented into various headings instead of the usual “Career” heading. Please refer to this discussion. (March 2008)

Hey, they’re working on warp speed.

Faster Than the Speed of Light?

nytimes.com

“Einstein famously postulated that, as Dr. White put it, “thou shalt not exceed the speed of light,” essentially setting a galactic speed limit. But in 1994, a Mexican physicist, Miguel Alcubierre, theorized that faster-than-light speeds were possible in a way that did not contradict Einstein, though Dr. Alcubierre did not suggest anyone could actually construct the engine that could accomplish that.

“His theory involved harnessing the expansion and contraction of space itself. Under Dr. Alcubierre’s hypothesis, a ship still couldn’t exceed light speed in a local region of space. But a theoretical propulsion system he sketched out manipulated space-time by generating a so-called “warp bubble” that would expand space on one side of a spacecraft and contract it on another.

“In this way, the spaceship will be pushed away from the Earth and pulled towards a distant star by space-time itself,” Dr. Alcubierre wrote. Dr. White has likened it to stepping onto a moving walkway at an airport. “

I’ve never seen an NFL team that has such stark differences in how successful a team will be in a game based on the play of one ‘professional round one draft choice’ quarterback when on the field. If Weeds is in the game the whole team plays crappy. As soon as he’s out, the two backups make the team go. Night and day difference. Talk about playing yourself out of a job. Now all they need to do is try to keep any other quarterback they have healthy so Weeds is never in a game again this year.

@OfficialTedSays This describes my reaction to everyone I went to High School with and most of my relatives.

Pretty much everyone I went to high school with was an asshole. There was one exception: a dorky guy who liked to collect comic books. The cool kids ridiculed him unmercifully for this. At the time comic books were regarded as strictly kid stuff, with no thought to an adult collector market developing. I did not join in this ridicule, since I was a closet sci-fi fan myself and would have been subject to similar persecution if I hadn’t also been a jock.
My dorky classmate bravely withstood the ridicule and he definitely got the last laugh. He is still laughing. for he was ideally positioned on the ground floor when comics did become serious business in the late 60s. He started a comics shop in LA. This developed into a chain. He parlayed that into a ground floor entry into another growth industry, video rental. He was a founder of one of the big chains. In the early 90s he cashed out for something like 150 million dollars. He is filthy rich today, absolutely rolling in the stuff. I still talk to him occasionally, the only member of the old class to whom he will talk.

The never-ending irony is that the right wing fully embraces post-modernism if it’s a matter of discussing truth about evolution, climate, pollution, health, homosexuality…and sundry other topics. Then suddenly their cultural narrative is the only thing that’s true, proofs be damned.

CS Lewis famously said that he had better memories of his time in the World War I trenches than he did of his years in boarding school just before. He explained that the war was ghastly, of course, but nobody pretended you should like it and that made it somehow more bearable.

That’s one of the dicier examples, actually. Human sacrifice, wars, capital punishment etc. make things complicated when it comes to killing people.

The easier target in some post modern thinking is moving from the (correct) observation that the scientific establishment at any place and time reflects the culture it is embedded in to the (incorrect, IMO) conclusion that the resulting scientific work also necessarily has such cultural embedding to a significant degree.

Claiming that Newton’s laws or Maxwell’s equations have any cultural inheritance more significant than the names ‘Newton’ and “Maxwell’, as has been done from time to time by post-modernists IIRC, is a philosophical position that begs for mockery and exaggeration.

I’ll tell you this much, if Cucci wins tomorrow, this state is in for some very dark times. And that’s not an exaggeration. As much as I loathe the man, McDonnell did a lot to keep the state’s Republicans in line in the legislature, defusing attempts to ram some very unpopular bills and redistricting plans down our throats because he hoped to run for the presidency one day. Cucci will happily sign those bills and plunge this state into a level of derpitude that we have thankfully avoided in the wake of the TP uprising.

Moral truths are intrinsically subjective, rooted in individual and most frequently dogmatic religious outlook. Questioning specific morality is questioning faith, rarely tolerated by the faithful. Ethical truths are more rule bound, sociological, analyzable and falsifiable.

The problem is obvious, when moral “truths” (I can’t even take the term seriously in this context) collide with scientific knowledge, which one must yield. It’s pretty clear which one Cruz defers to.

Always gotten the impression that things didn’t go according to script with how quickly the whole thing disappeared from the media. While we could discuss that, that’s not the point of Cruz using the word “moral.” It has nothing to do with ethics. It has to do with creating a test that allows Cruz to decide what is true and what isn’t.

I just did. Morals are subjective, usually rooted in superstition / religion / mysticism. They’re untestable, simplistic. Your bible says something is a sin so it’s a sin.

Ethics is an actual study in and of itself. It tries to be objective, seeks consensus, and can be challenged and tested without threatening an entire worldview.

Morality is emotional, gut level and raw. Ethicality is intellectual, more easily articulable, reasoned, and amenable to alteration.

Morality is emotional, gut level and raw. Ethicality is intellectual, more easily articulable, reasoned, and amenable to alteration.

But morality can in fact be explained at great length and justified in non-religious terms, so to call it “untestable” does not seem correct.

To put it crudely, morality can be viewed as what preachers deal with, while ethics is the province of philosophers.

Thing get complicated when people try to be both theologian and philosopher at the same time, which is why I personally don’t see any clear dividing lines between the two terms.

I think the Tash and Aslan solution here may be the best explanation Dark though I don’t want to put words into frank’s mouth, but once someone takes the time to thoroughly test and justify their morals they are no longer morals they have “graduated” into eithics.

Likewise if “ethics” are not backed up/tested/explored they are not really ethics but simply morals.

270 goddamnedfrank  Mon, Nov 4, 2013 7:02:56pm

Ethics vs. morality is why the conservatives lost the debate over gay rights and marriage. A very specific brand of morality held dominant for a long time, but in the end it became unable to sell itself on actual principals. The religious antipathy towards gays turned out to be intellectually weak, simplistic, and incredibly ugly. As educational levels increased the ethical argument became comparatively easier and easier to sell, because it’s rooted in rules most people can intuitively grasp, fairness and equality. The only people still fighting against the tide were compromised long ago, essentially brainwashed into believing a very selective emphasis on certain passages from a two thousand year old text instead of their innate sense of right and wrong.

Poor Kant. One of his biggest projects included a purported demonstration that certain claims about reality (e.g., its Euclidian geometry) could be established without reference to empirical observations (i.e., synthetic a priori).

It’s a pity reality turns out to have non-Euclidean geometry.

Not necessarily a fan, (there are some things he argued /put forward in his Narnia books that I disagree with (“they have chosen cunning over belief” makes me throw up in my mouth a little)) but they’re the stories my dad read to me growing up (he also read me and my brother hobbit and Lord of the rings if anyone cares) and I reread them again in college or so, and there are some things in them worth remembering.

Raw assertion is raw. The fact that morality and ethics often adopt the same positions doesn’t make morality any more explainable or rooted in either science or truth. When you explain a moral “truth” in ethical, non-religious terms that’s not morality doing the explaining.

Cruz is so so so so wrong about Marxism and the theory of evolution it’s not even funny. No, they don’t go hand in hand, it’s quite the opposite:

In 1948, genetics was officially declared “a bourgeois pseudoscience”;[10] all geneticists were fired from their jobs (some were also arrested), and all genetic research was discontinued. Nikita Khrushchev, who claimed to be an expert in agricultural science, also valued Lysenko as a great scientist, and the taboo on genetics continued (but all geneticists were released or rehabilitated posthumously). The ban was only waived in the mid-1960s.

Thus, Lysenkoism caused serious, long-term harm to Soviet knowledge of biology. It represented a serious failure of the early Soviet leadership to find real solutions to agricultural problems, throwing their support behind a charlatan at the expense of many human lives.

This is a huge mall. It’s got over 200 stores, AMC movies with 14 screens, a huge food court and several attached restaurants. It’s located at Routes 4 and 17 - one of the major intersections in Northern NJ and just a few minutes from the lair.

They’ve been reporting that police from every agency and town in the county are responding, and I’ve seen tv reports showing tactical units on the scene as well.

All the reports so far aren’t indicating injuries or casualties. Some are indicating that the shooter had full body armor. Others that the shooter dressed in black. Some indicating that at least 4 shots fired in vicinity of the Nordstroms department store side of the mall - the NE corner, which is where Joe’s and Pappa Razi, Uniqlo, and the Apple Store are located on the upper level.

304 Targetpractice  Mon, Nov 4, 2013 7:48:17pm

Beginning to wonder more and more why body armor is available for purchase to civilians.

305 lawhawk  Mon, Nov 4, 2013 7:48:22pm

Gawker’s got running updates on the situation at the mall as well.

While the mall normally closes at 9:30, there are sections of the mall that are open later - including restaurants, which are on the perimeter of the mall with separate entrances, and the movie theater.

That report on CBS news also claims more than one shooter, and that there are casualties - but no confirmations on that.

Heard a couple of reports indicating that shots were fired at security cameras (but not confirmed).

Hackensack Med, a trauma center, is on standby, but so far no indications anyone has been transported.

Trying to secure the place is a bear with dozens of entrances and the perimeter road that takes you right onto major highways (4, 17, and Garden State Parkway) plus local roads.

All of the reports are indicating that the shooter and/or shots fired were in the vicinity of the Nordstrom’s department store, with the path being somewhere from the Apple store, walking north towards Nordstrom’s and then West towards the Talbots on the upper level.

The Record’s indicating a lone gunman firing into the air.

None of the witness reported seeing anyone hit by the gunfire.

One witness said the man was “strutting by” and talking to himself as he fired at least five shots.

Althea Brown, 26, of Paterson said she was in Talbots, a clothing store in the mall, when she saw the man walk by.

“He looked at me and kept on walking,” she said. She said she heard three shots, then two more. The man appeared to be wearing body armor, and had the visor of his helmet pulled up as he walked, she said.

Another witness, Shadey Reyes, 24, a Bergen County resident, was working in the J. Crew store when she heard the shots.

“Everyone froze in place,” she said, then ran to the parking lot.

I’m just hoping no one was hit or injured in all this and that they catch the shooter real soon.

Have there been an AR-15 sighting yet? Seriously, this reminds me of the “News for Parrots” monty python sketch. There are reports the gunman is white, the mall seems in an affluent area so it’s national news. Meanwhile this very evening in Chicago: 1 dead, several shot on the south and west sides chicagotribune.com

It doesn’t make national news because the shooters and victims aren’t white and probably poor. National news coverage follows some really odd patterns.

Doesn’t have to be a copycat. Could be a guy who saw a chance to rob one of the many stores in the mall, or someone with mental issues, and once shots fired, police responding based on 911 would see/indicate a huge response to secure the facility.

And a facility of this size gets a huge response. A facility located in the NYC metro area gets a huge media response. Multiplier effect on media coverage and the rush to conclusions.

So far, the only thing to take consolation in is that there aren’t a stream of ambulances - not seeing them queued up or taking injured people as yet.

Garden State Plaza mall shooting: Shots fired in New Jersey’s Garden State Plaza in Paramus by man wearing full body armor near Nordstrom: reports

Read more: nydailynews.com

NY Post? Headline is more subdued, but they’re highlighting that witnesses saw gunman with full body armor.

A gunman opened fire in the Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey, Monday night, according to local police.

A law enforcement source said that early reports indicated the shooter was “dressed in all black body armor” and may have been shooting out security cameras.

And it’s quite possible each of the early news reports were piggybacking on the original incorrect/incomplete reports coming in from a chaotic scene.

You can bet though that security footage from the mall will be screened and checked to see what really happened.

I agree strongly. I really hope enough of our fellow Virginians agree that he’s bad news. Fortunately, I think he will lose but then again I did not expect McDonnell to win in the huge landslide that he did and it’s downright shameful in the first place that Cucci is our AG let alone a possibility for our future governor.

Pay close attention to the constant use of ‘communist’, folks. These people are unapologetic McCarthyites, unashamed of being so. They are decaying, decrepit relics of the 40s, zombies come back to taint and destroy all goodness in this nation. They would undo the last 70 years of progress just to wrap their withered claws around a tiny shred of the ill-gotten power they once had.

You a Browns fan?

I’ve never seen an NFL team that has such stark differences in how successful a team will be in a game based on the play of one ‘professional round one draft choice’ quarterback when on the field. If Weeds is in the game the whole team plays crappy. As soon as he’s out, the two backups make the team go. Night and day difference. Talk about playing yourself out of a job. Now all they need to do is try to keep any other quarterback they have healthy so Weeds is never in a game again this year.

I’ve been a Browns fan for more than 40 years, and I’ve suffered through some horrid quarterbacking (Mike Phipps, Paul McDonald, Tim Couch), as well as some great QBing (Bernie Kosar). In all that time, I think it’s safe to say that Weeden is the worst QB in team history. One reason is what you point out - the whole team plays down to his level. Sometimes a team with a really good defense can get a sketchy quarterback out of trouble (such as the Bears when Rex Grossman was under center), but you can see in the faces of the players the complete lack of confidence in Weeden as soon as he takes the field. You can’t blame poor play on one guy, but it’s amazing how, for instance, Greg Little seemed to lose his cement hands on Sunday when it was Jason Campbell throwing to him and not Weeden.

Quite frankly, they just should cut their losses and cut Weeden immediately. He can’t even be a “serviceable backup,” and there was a injury scare when Campbell went out briefly on Sunday. Fortunately his ribs were only bruised, but it’s a little too close for comfort not to have a credible understudy, especially with the team finally seeming to turn a corner.
