Rand Paul Blames Numerous Cases of Plagiarism on His Staff

But “no staff members will be fired”
Wingnuts • Views: 17,660

Like a true Republican leader, Senator Rand Paul is making excuses for his now-undeniable serial plagiarism by blaming it all on his staff.

Mr. Paul’s office acknowledged that it had made mistakes, but largely sought to play down the charges of plagiarism.

“In the thousands of speeches and op-eds Senator Paul has produced, he has always presented his own ideas, opinions and conclusions,” Mr. Stafford said. “Senator Paul also relies on a large number of staff and advisers to provide supporting facts and anecdotes — some of which were not clearly sourced or vetted properly.”

Mr. Stafford continued: “Footnotes presenting supporting facts were not always used. Going forward, footnotes will be available on request. There have also been occasions where quotations or typesetting indentations have been left out through errors in our approval process. From here forward, quoting, footnoting and citing will be more complete.”

Sen. Paul clearly knows that his plagiarism scandal isn’t over yet, but he promises he won’t be firing any staff members:

Mr. Paul also said he could not rule out that other examples of past plagiarism would come out, but he unequivocally added that no staff members would be fired.

Like his father Ron Paul with his racist newletters, Rand Paul put things out under his own name and is now trying to shift the blame to others. A family trait, apparently.

I don’t know. I’ll bet the people who vote for a wacko like Rand Paul couldn’t care less about plagiarism. Most of them have never heard the word before.

The politics of personal responsibility™

When in doubt, blame the intern.
When no intern is available, blame the researcher.
When there’s no one else to blame, blame cough medicine (or drinking heavily like Toronto’s Mayor Ford).

True, but my hope springs eternal that the saner people here will get off their butts and vote next time instead of insisting “there’s NO chance in hell that he’ll win, plus it’s raining, so I’ll just stay home…”

Don’t count on it. Plagiarism scandals don’t have legs in politics. He’ll weather this.

His constituents don’t care that he’s stealing ideas from others. They don’t even mind when Paul’s proposing stealing from the poor to give to the rich in his own state (redistribution away from the safety net). So, they’re not going to mind this…

How is that rebranding going, Episode 197:

Alabama Republican: LGBT people ‘need to go back to California or Vermont or wherever’

A Republican congressional candidate from Alabama said that LGBT people in his state don’t belong there and should “go back to California or Vermont or wherever they came from.” According to Mother Jones magazine, Republican Dean Young made the statement when running for another office in 2002, but has made it clear that he remains no friend to LGBTs as he runs to represent Alabama’s District 1 in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Young is running in the special election to replace Rep. Jo Bonner, who retired from office rather than face the heat from a scandal involving an all expenses paid African safari he took — purportedly to investigate mythical al Qaeda ties to poaching. Young’s opponent, state Sen. Bradley Byrne, is also an arch conservative, also a tea party acolyte and significantly right of the national mainstream, but Byrne, Young says, is not sufficiently extreme in his anti-LGBT beliefs.

It’s possible but unlikely. Bush and Obama both survived plagiarism scandals. Probably Clinton too. I think most people know politicians use speech writers and and ghost authors for books. Policies are borrowed from think tanks and party platforms. It’s a bit worse when pundits or journalists get busted for plagiarism but most people don’t think politicians come up with their own words anyways. All this stuff is run through focus groups by advertising agencies anyways, none of it’s spontaneous.

That’s his problem and I think that’s why he’s likely to be a one termer. The guy just oozes pompous gasbag. From the patronizing act at Howard where he told black students that the founding members of the NAACP were all Republicans and that they would be “shocked” at that fact or his persistent claims that liberals don’t understand capitalism even though his understanding of capitalism is limited to Von Mises screed. Anyhow, the most prominent politician I know who had a plagiarism scandal was Biden and Biden didn’t pursue a presidential run for another 20 years following his. The commonality though Bush, Obama, and Biden have though is they’re all likable. If Rand had simply said, I slipped up, this would be something to turn a new page on and move on but first he challenges Maddow to a duel because he felt his integrity was questioned and now he’s throwing his staff under the bus. It’s like Watergate where the crime was not the crime iteslf but the cover up. But I agree with you. Rand’s got more problems than simply plagiarizing. He’s got a problem of being a divisive hack which despite what he believes won’t even work in Kentucky.

It’s pretty rich that the GOP started hating on unions the most when they nominated a former union president for president. Yet another reason why Reagan was a hypocritical jerk. He had no problem with heading up a guild when he was an actor but he had no problem ruining the lives of the air traffic controllers who had the “nerve” to expect better pay and benefits.

Now here’s someone who knows how to survive a scandal…

Why is Toronto Mayor Rob Ford still popular?

As Toronto Mayor Rob Ford admits smoking crack cocaine, Canada-based journalist Lorraine Mallinder ponders why his approval ratings actually went up despite the scandal engulfing city hall.

Love him or loathe him, Rob Ford is not your typical politician.

While allegations of crack-smoking might see most politicians ducking for cover, the mayor of Toronto instead admitted taking the drug in a “drunken stupor” and called on local police to distribute the footage.

“Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine,” Mr Ford said outside his office

How the hell does a Clinton lackey winning doom a Clinton’s presidential chances? If anything it helps her since Terry will do anything in his power as the state’s top Democrat to get her to first win the primary here and then if she’s the nominee to win in the GE. Terry’s got a lot of things I dislike about him but he knows how to raise money. I think there is a very small grain of truth here-McAuliffe is unpopular-just less unpopular than Cuchinelli. If he does a lousy job as governor, perhaps it will make the generic GOP look better.

I saw that. Kids today are a lot more mature on this issue than we were and we’re the ones who a lot of people credit with changing attitudes but the latter half millenials are a lot more mature than the first half ones on GLBT people.

We’ve reached and passed a tipping point. As longs as kids grew up without having their already established friendships get threatened by someone coming out openly it was massively easier for them to maintain the idea of gays and lesbians as the other.

It’s a lot harder for kids nowadays to maintain their hate because more of their friends feel safe coming out, and bullying on the issue is seen as less acceptable in a lot of urban and suburban areas. Bigotry depends on overwhelming support from the community to survive, once the erosion begins change starts taking place at an exponential rate.

You make some great points here Frank and I agree. I think kids actually knowing people who are out has helped them see gays not as the “other” but as fellow human beings. It was a lot easier in the past when gays were forced to remain closeted for fear of safety or public ostracism. That’s why I have a problem with people who profess “I don’t hate gays but I wish they would keep it to themselves.” Kids today I think realize more than any other generation that gay people are just like straight people. I just love how the excuse is “How do we explain this to kids?” The kids often have a more mature response to it than the adults.

Nothing yeah that’s why it took 40 years after the ratification to make suffrage for all men universal and then another to do that for race and the another 50 for gender, and then yet another 40 for racial minorities. Racism and sexism are part of our past and presently too unfortunately. It doesn’t mean we’re a horrible country but it does mean we can and should take lessons from those past bigotries. Some white fucking people are way too sensitive when it comes to what the past is. This isn’t “white guilt”, this is white acknowledgment where i acknowledge as a white man that my demographic controlled everything for much of our country’s history.

Bank of America caught refusing mortgages to women on maternity leave

The second couple, from Humble, TX, alleged that BofA refused to consider the wife’s employment income and denied their application for a mortgage loan because she was on maternity leave. They also claim that when their real estate agent told the loan officer that this denial was in violation of the Fair Housing Act, the loan officer changed his reasons for denying the loan. In the end, the couple went elsewhere for their mortgage, presumably to a lender that has a basic understanding of the law.

But no, no regulation needed here at all. Nope, these good corporate citizens are TOTALLY capable of looking after things themselves.

Look at industries like olive oil and honey, which have had giant controversies over faked contents recently.

Given the chance in a void of both consumer regulation and customer knowledge, companies absolutely leap at adulteration and mislabeling.

I’ve said it here before but I think being on the autistic spectrum has and this is funny given they say we struggle with empathy given me some insight to what minorities of all kind go through. It definitely has made me more sympathetic to the immigrant who gets called a terrorist because of his accent, the woman called a slut because she’s raped, or the gay kid who is bulled in the middle school locker room just because he happens to be attracted to guys. I was never bullied too hard. Like many kids, I got picked on a few times but nothing seriously but being on the spectrum and a general feeling of being on the outside looking in has given some empathy that I don’t know I would have if I wasn’t on the spectrum. I like to think I would.

Well sure, but I’m talking about fact that even within the GLBT community bisexuals get grief on all sides. Not everyone is willing to accept that it’s a real thing or that it exists.

My line is drawn at the self-professed vampires who don’t like drinking blood. I mean in that case you’re just a pale dude or chick who’s read too much Poe.

Anyone declaring themselves a ‘spiritual vampire’ or ‘psychic vampire’ should be immediately shoved into a broom closet with some Borges and a penlight until they realize how to be interesting.

Kind of amusing how the little brother ended up being the tallest of the three. I’m kind of afraid of that happening here. But then again on the flip side, I may achieve the converse and end up being lighter than both of them if I keep up this diet. Been 6 months since I started and I’ve gone from 264 to 209.

I tried to hang out with the Goth crowd for a while, until someone explained I was supposed to be pasty and wearing black lace and not chainmail, furs, and carrying a battle axe around.

Devil’s Island, no? I was thinking about something like this the other day though talking with my Dad. We visited Alcatraz last summer and we were also talking about Woody Harrelson and how his Dad ended up dying behind bars at ADA Florence. We both ultimately agreed that being imprisoned on Alcatraz so close to the city where apparently you could hear the people partying at night would be more frustrating than being in the middle of nowhere. Sorry, rambling I know but that prison photo you posted got me thinking about that.

They never seem to remember Jesus never actually addressed homosexuality directly.

It’s all about sperm and egg control. G-d seems not to really care as long as we love each other in the process of combining the two or not combining the two.

The control of egg and sperm seems to be of particular concern to religion, government and patriarchs.

I can see in issues of consanguinity or certain inheritable conditions, but these things really are the realm of the individuals involved as they are the ones to deal with any possible outcome.

Good luck. Yeah it’s going to be tough here. Thanksgiving, my brother’s wedding, Christmas, but I got the recumbent so I should be good to go. I added a new twist to the diet this past week. Weekly vegetarian days and monthly vegan days.

One of my enemies is the year-old bakery a block and a half away. Sure, I can walk on by, but when the husband brings me stuff his wife wants me to try, I can’t say no. Wouldn’t be polite. Her peanut butter pie is great, cinnamon rolls, cookies, etc. Now he’s experimenting with making bagels, smoking his own salmon, and he made the best brisket ever last Saturday. OMG.

If Sirota’s telling you that your anti-Obama rhetoric is stupid. It’s time to listen. I’m all for hearing reasonable critiques of Obama but the problem is too many of them are like that. Obama’s nothing like Hitler. I mean he’s a lot like Hitler in the same way that everyone is like Hitler in that both breathed oxygen, had two eyes, arms, and legs, and had opposable thumbs but as for actual practices. Obama isn’t even the must “authoritarian” of the US presidents. The wingnuts land dudesises like this one who fetishize the past ignore the fact that some of the worst attacks on our Civil Liberties were signed into law by one of our Founding Fathers. Yes, I’m talking about Adams signing the Alien and Sedition Acts.

Agh dessert’s the worst enemy of any dieter. My Mom made a great cake on Sunday when we visited with my sister-in-law and her parents to celebrate finding out that they’re having a granddaughter. The key I’ve discovered to dieting though is consistent exercise and not eating in between meals. I used to be guilty of neither.

fer chrissakes, there is physical attraction, which is not necessarily sexual, there is sexual attraction and there is emotional attraction. They overlap but are different in nature.

But when you get all three in one person, you have hit paydirt…

I’ve lost 20 pounds since this time last year. Occasionally, five pounds or so sneak back (almost always after spouse brings home a pizza, so I’ve completely deleted pizza from my diet, even as a special treat).
I could stand to lose another 40 pounds, but will be ecstatic if it’s only another 20.
Been shopping around for a suitable exercise machine to supplement my walking (especially with winter coming on).

Weirdly what’s working for me is eating all the time. Just … not as much, and nothing that’s a case of dipping back into a bag that I’ve not pre-measured.

As for dessert: if at all possible I have it first for that meal. That way the rest of the meal copes with the hunger rush.

He may be “smart enough” to be teachable, but his attitude and ego won’t allow that.

I am of the same thinking. He’s already a senator what possibly could he learn?

But, if anyone hears him say anything about Obama lying and deceiving people about keeping their health plans…he should be and most likely will be slammed by the press and hopefully by the voters of Kentucky and everyone else. He just took away any moral high ground and put himself in a patch of quicksand or wet clay mud.

But, he’ll be too smart to think of that and his arrogance will cost him again and again. I think he thinks the voting public forgets about this stuff after a few news cycles.

re: #50 Killgore Trout

Now here’s someone who knows how to survive a scandal…

Why is Toronto Mayor Rob Ford still popular?

He’s popular because he’s playing the usual addict card, “I’m sorry I got caught. I didn’t really know what I was doing knew perfectly well what I was doing and I don’t see why I should change. I’m not an addict I’m unwilling to face my problems. I promise I’ll change That ought to shut you up and get you off my back.

Addicts do this because it works.

Also, as I mentioned a few days ago, the burbs hate the inner city. The papers and other media are based there and are regarded as ‘attacking our guy.’ As conservative areas always do in cases like this, they’re circling the wagons and supporting ‘their guy.’

Ford would have to be caught in bed with a dead boy to lose their support.
