3000 votes. That’s all that separates Cuccinelli and McAuliffe.

Ken T. Cuccinelli II 871,172 46.31%
Terry R. McAuliffe 878,692 46.71%
Robert C. Sarvis 126,722 6.74%

And McAuliffe takes the lead with the bulk of the votes left to count coming from urban centers.

50 lawhawk  Tue, Nov 5, 2013 6:48:13pm

So, in yet another referendum on Obamacare, it looks like the GOP candidate who supported repeal (and who as AG litigated its constitutionality all the way to the Supreme Court) lost - again. Not exactly a good takeaway if you’re a GOPer.

The takeaway that the GOP will have? That they should have spent more time supporting Cuccinelli and tried to keep Sarvis out - and a true-believing GOPer would have won over a flawed McAuliffe.

Roundup of ballot initiatives still pending nationally:

NJ - passed minimum wage hike.

NY - appears ready to pass Vegas style gambling on non-Native American land, pass amendments to Adirondack Park use, and rejecting raising the age for judges to 80 from 70.

(As aside, the casino passage is a bad bit of news for NJ, which relies heavily on Atlantic City casino revenues, less bad news for CT casinos at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, and possibly good news for the Catskills, where casinos are seen as a salvation to the lost splendor of the Borscht Belt.)

CO - rejecting a secession movement from northern counties; passing tax on marijuana.

TX: referendum to turn Astrodome into convention center looks like it’s going to pass.

TX: referendum to turn Astrodome into convention center looks like it’s going to pass.

Good. It’s an iconic building even if it’s no longer useful as a sports arena. I was hopeful that they’d come up with a way to save it and repurpose it.

IIRC, the original Colt 45s home plate was in the middle of a furniture store taht was built over the original baseball stadium site. I would’ve hated for the Dome to disappear the same way.

Off topic. It kind of amazes me that so many people on ebay don’t use sniping software. What’s the point in getting all emotional over a bid? If everyone put the max they were comfortable spending into the snipe and waited for it to fire a few seconds before close then ebay would be a better place for buyers.

Of course now I’m selling shit again and am glad that there are so many idiots willing to get into bidding wars days before the auction closes. Still, it kind of amazes me.

Home plate of the long gone Forbes Field is in the middle of a University of Pittsburgh building. (There’s also a lone stretch of wall preserved outside next to a small park.*) I used to detour a little bit to step on home whenever I cut through that building or was there to attend a class.

* - Happens to be the wall that Mazeroski’s home run went over to win the 1960 World Series.

Just returned from that benighted land, where I found a sweet, overflowing fountain of wingnut tears:
Democrat Terry McAuliffe wins Va. governor’s race, Fox News projects
Responses range from denial, despite this being Fox, to the usual suggestions of fraud to fury at libertarian candidate Sarvis. The harshest condemnation (“dickless quislings”) is reserved for the Republican establishment and especially Chris Christie for refusing to campaign on Cooch’s behalf. Even the sainted Ron Paul is faulted for arriving with too little, too late, in support of Cooch.

Anyhow as for Christie. I think despite his landslide win tonight, he may be in for a tough road for the Republican nomination. Republican primary voters are not the people of New Jersey.

This was a very winnable race for the GOP this year. They could have run Bolling and walked away with this election. Would he have been damaged by the McDonnell scandal? Sure, but he’s a likable guy and would have been able to capitalize on that charisma. Instead, they’re now going to be left trying to cheer themselves up by saying that they didn’t lose “that bad.”

In defense of Sarvis, he’s not anti-choice or anti-gay marriage.

Just looked him up, you’re right. Based on his issues page it seems like he may have stolen as much if not more support from McCauliffe than Cuccinelli. He openly supports marriage equality, putting him left of McCaulliffe on civil rights. Combined with pretty reasonable if not exactly ideal language on the death penalty, abortion and immigration, plus ending the drug war on marijuana users it’s easy to see why a lot of people would support him. It’s issues like school choice, environmental protections and especially tax and regulatory reform where he gets a lot more weaselly / dumbshitty.

Sweet, sweet wingnut tears. Over 1800 posts and climbing in the VA live thread over at Free Republic. Here are some of the more recent responses:

I advocate getting rid of Fairfax and Loudoun counties. Give them to Maryland and DC. They have almost nothing in common with the rest of the state.

I heard this sentiment many times today from native Virginians. People are disgusted with the democrats in the rest of the commonwealth.

This is exactly what the GOP wanted. They wanted a message sent to the Tea Party…they wanted a defeat to discredit the tea party and diminish any strength or credibility they have left before the 2016 election. They got what they wanted. And fought for.

The GOP will get far more than it bargained for.

Vote out the scumbag RINOs in 2014

The GOP-E has been and always will be the Get Along Gang.
The Love to Share in the Power the government gives them.

The GOP has morphed into a amalgamation of Socialists and Moderate Democrats that took over the party after they left the Dems in the 80’s.

Perhaps it is time to come out and say it, Grahmnesty, McCain, McConnel et al aren’t RINO’s, We are. Republicans in Name Only, because the Republican Party obviously wants to stand for big government, they sabotage ALL the candidates who would threaten that. Look at Miller in Alaska, The Race here or a have dozen others I could name.

We need to look ourselves in the Mirror and ask “Why I am a Republican” because it certainly shouldn’t be to support the get along gang.

Libtards love abortion..single women went overwhelmingly for the Commie..they love murdering their children more than they love freedom..abortion trumps everything..the next time there is a story about kids dying by some act of violence I dont want to see ONE Dem on TV pretending to cry like they give a crap, they are the party of baby murder..PERIOD

Some of you people here are the biggest political retards I have ever seen in my life. Let’s recap: Cuc had three strikes going into this - 1) Outspent by at leat 2 to 1, 2) Faux libertarian plant put into the race by the Dems to suck votes and 3) No help from the GOPe.

All that and he lost by about a percent and half after being down double digits two weeks ago. I can guarantee you the Dems are crapping their pants.

I would love nothing more than to see Karl Rove thrown into a molten volcano. Piece of crap.

Population density of urban commie areas make counting them take longer. Plus they have to get the boxes of fake ballots out of their car trunks

We have to destroy the Republican Party in order to save it

WOW that is really disturbing. Sometimes I think we are living in Nazi Germany..we are getting pretty close

I’m so, SO sorry. My heart bleeds for your state and for my Nation.

We sent our Governor, Scott Walker, (R, WI) your way - guess the voter fraud got the best of you.

Again, so very, VERY sad to see this. @#$%^&*!

With their money and dirty tricks THEY WON and they have been winning, and they will keep winning. People will vote for free stuff, abortion, gay marriage and amnesty.

Vote out the RINO bastards in 2014! Destroy the GOP-e!

Exactly right. The only way to defeat the Marxist RAT party is by first destroying the evil GOPe and RINOs in office.

We need to go Alinsky on the GOPe — they must be humiliated and crushed.

And I hope all those Republicans who did not support Ken because he was too Conservative for their liking…I hope they all enjoy the smell of Terry’s butt because that is where they will have to be sticking their noses now.

Then I remember the man who accosted my mother during her morning walk and started screaming at her for voting for “the Muslim” for president. A wealthy, cultured man of clout in the community. Standing in the street, screaming abuse at my mother,

And he didn’t even know her vote for sure. He just assumed.

Yeah, but that makes them look even dumber. If Democrats truly were engaging in voter fraud, why keep the election under the recount margin? Why not have him winning by 2% or more? “That would make it too obvious!,” they’ll say, but the same could be said if Obenshain wins.

McCauliffe, according to all the polls that were trumpeted left and right, was supposed to win in a landslide.

But he barely crosses the finish line ahead of a right wing nut job.

What happened?

Put simply, those crazy old wingnuts go out and vote, and so many of the enlightened youth just do not.

This is why I do not expect 2014 elections to change much of the current make up of DC.

Once again, the map of VA districts shows that problem the GOP is running into more and more: Seas of red that lead to embarrassing losses. Tomorrow, we’ll again hear “How did we win so many counties and still lose the election!?”

Imagine being a mother losing their child in a miscarriage and having the police treat you like you committed a crime. Surprising that Cuccinelli got any women’s votes.

Democrat Terry McAuliffe won the Virginia’s governor’s race narrowly on the strength of women’s votes, by an eight-point margin-slimmer than several polls had predicted. That was partly because white women broke heavily for Republican Ken Cuccinelli, 54-38, according to NBC News exit polls. Cuccinelli also won married women’s votes by eleven points.

But because African-American and unmarried women turned out in numbers close to Barack Obama’s 2012 election, McAuliffe won women overall-and with them, the election. He also won 59% of the votes of people who said abortion was the most important issue to them, who made up 20% of the electorate.

USA Today, a Gannett Company (they keep wanting us to remember), runs the following:

Terry McAuliffe ekes out victory in Virginia

[…]

McAuliffe’s victory in the key swing state was an affirmation of his strategy to portray Cuccinelli, the state attorney general, as a Tea Party champion who is too extreme for Virginia.

[…]

McAuliffe, known best as a fundraiser for Bill and Hillary Clinton, portrayed his GOP rival as a hard-line conservative in the mold of Sen. Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican who helped force the partial government shutdown that hit hard in a state dependent on federal jobs and the military.

McAuliffe and his allies used the Democrat’s financial advantage in the race to flood the airwaves with negative ads saying Cuccinelli, the state attorney general, would restrict abortion and take away women’s access to health care.

Cuccinelli countered by hammering on McAuliffe’s questionable business ventures and ties to Obama and the Clintons. As headlines blared news of the health care law’s malfunctioning website, Cuccinelli tried to make the election a referendum on the law known as Obamacare and tap into voter concerns about the law’s impact on their choices and pocketbooks.

[…]

This entire portrayal of the campaigns by USA Today would be quite humorous if it weren’t so sad.

Cuccinelli is part of the a political movement, of which he speaks bluntly in favor, of stopping abortions. It’s not something that is just a portrayal of Cuccinelli by a political opponent.

Notice that USA Today implies that Cuccinelli’s accusations of McCauliffe are somehow different than McCauliffe’s of Cuccinelli’s.

Also skipped by USA Today was naming the Republican candidates for Lt. Gov. and AG, though they mention they lost. Why? Could it be that those candidates were even more of what USA Today couches as a “portrayal”?

Ha, loves it! I can see how a Packers fan could be shocked, but much of it was preparation. Marc Trestman had Josh McCowan involved in play design throughout the entire season and he and Jay Cutler regularly spoke about the plays and what needed to be done. Hence, McCowan was ready, while Seneca Wallace was not.

I also think the Packers were a bit surprised by the much upgraded offensive line of the Bears, which has been a critical reason for thew Bear’s victories this season. Plays that used to be sacks now turn into short passes, and that has made a massive difference.

Newspapers doing a news story need to use the word “portrayed” even if the candidate really is whatever he or she is accused of being. It’s a matter of neutrality.

Editorials can call people things but a news story about an election needs to keep a neutral tone.

A lot of it is run-of-the-mill bureaucratic bullshittery, but the fact is that they lean much more on countries where it’s easier from them to get information about potential human rights abuses (us, Israel, and other Western nations), rather than to actually attempt to do shit about abuses in nations where there isn’t representative or open government.

1% is correct:

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Republican Mark Obenshain leads Democrat Mark Herrin by just more than 1,000 votes. But the race is so close that each’s vote total rounds to 50.0 percent.

There is no automatic recount in Virginia, but the losing candidate may request one if the difference is less than 1 percent.

I am going to take a moment to thank the non-fundamentalist atheists here on LGF for, well, not being assholes.

That is all.

We exist???

“Better would be surreptitiously managing to coat their hands with capsaicin.”

Until you try to wipe the sweat off your face. Or rub your eyes.

I do a lot of bicycling, and often I’ll rub just a little bit of Ben-Gay on my legs before I go riding. As I’ve gotten older I’ve found that it helps me loosen up a lot quicker.

Well, I had gotten a tube of the Capsaicin-D balm, had used it in the house after rides, generally liked it… and who reads directions anyhow. Put a little on, out the door and started riding. Nice sunny day. After a mile or two, I’m thinking this stuff works nicely. after 5 miles I’m thinking “This is getting pretty warm”. after 10 miles I’m heading home as fast as I can with my legs on fire. Not only were the places I had put it burning, but it was busy working it way up shorts to my nether regions.

Once I got home I looked at the label, and it says “Do not use on skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight”.
