As we’ve been saying for years: the Tea Party and other true believers are just fundamentalists in fiscal conservative clothing

As tax-exempt organizations become a vehicle of choice for big political donors, one powerful appeal is the anonymity. Federal laws allow tax-exempt groups - unlike political committees - to withhold their donor lists from disclosure.

And some groups take the low profile a step further. An investigation by NPR and the Center for Responsive Politics found a tier of social welfare groups that operate behind the scenes, raising money and doling it out to other, more public groups, while reporting those grants to the IRS only annually.

One pioneer in this activity is the Wellspring Committee, founded in 2008. Based in the Washington, D.C., suburbs, it has raised $24 million, and distributed nearly $16.9 million to other social welfare groups. Using tax records, the NPR-CRP investigation identified three of its donors - other social welfare groups - and found they accounted for just over $251,000, or one percent of Wellspring’s revenues.

NPR’s Power, Money and Influence Correspondent Peter Overby reported this story with Viveca Novak, editorial director, and Robert Maguire, political nonprofits investigator, from the Center for Responsive Politics. For this investigation, they used tax records to map out the relationships between social welfare organizations. To dive deeper into this story, you can explore CRP’s database tracking political nonprofit spending since 2008.

The reporting team also wrote more about the Wellspring Committee. Continue reading at OpenSecrets.org: Wellspring’s Flow: Dark Money Outfit Helped Fuel Groups on Political Front Lines

Wellspring’s president is Ann Corkery, an active figure within the social conservative movement. Over the years, she has been involved with the National Organization for Marriage, Catholic League and other groups working on social issues.

Wellspring, however, says it focuses on economic matters. It told the IRS in its application for tax-exempt status that it would “assist other like-minded organizations in promoting free market policies and principles.” It also would help other organizations “in developing messaging strategies,” apparently drawing on Corkery’s experience as a lawyer specializing in reputation campaigns.

I’ve got kids who are in their teens, four of them. None of them are even remotely interested in church, though both of their mothers were church-goers. What is really strange to me (a lifelong atheist) is talking to my kids about how their lack of religion or open atheism, depending, is treated in society now. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, revealing that you were an atheist was an immediate ticket to non-stop harassment and belittling, and a suffocating patronizing attitude that made me want to scream.

My kids report that it is almost the opposite now. So, these busy little evangelicals trying to overtake our social order with their unwanted, out-of-date ideas are about out of time. Those kids will all be adults in the next 5 years. I expect most of these organizations to be dead or dying by then.

I think part of that is that due to media reporting, Twitter, etc. the most visible religious figures most of the time are those making assholes of themselves, or political figures who are already assholes making great displays of their piety as a vote-gathering device.

I was very turned off by all the Campus Crusade for Christ dweebs running around the dorms in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Put me off Christianity for a long time. I have come to terms with it after meeting a number of entirely reasonable Christians although I am hardly a believer or a practicioner.

Fundamentalists who insist that anyone who believes even slightly differently than them is an idiot are quite capable of putting people off from any belief system, be it a religion, atheism, or hell, even CrossFit (for a non-religious but still kind of cultish example).

Ok, the latter one might be because it’s also associated with an ex, but..

If you want to know why Republican Ken Cuccinelli lost the governorship of the Old Dominion yesterday, look no further than white evangelicals. Four years ago, when Republican Bob McDonnell won, they constituted 34 percent of the electorate. This time, it was 27 percent.

Then maybe you can, as a friend, help him understand why so many people are apparently incapable of reading his comments to mean what he thinks they mean. (A useful hint for him would be that we didn’t all fail reading comprehension.)

I’m sure he must have some qualities to recommend him, but they haven’t come across in any of the interactions I’ve had with him on any conversation involving religion. He comes off as one of the fundamentalist atheists who is just as obnoxious as a fundamentalist Christian or a fundamentalist Muslim.

I haven’t read the thread fully, but if the gist of it is he’d like to see a religious character in a comic break out and adopt atheism I agree with him. Media is full of instances where religion is the desired outcome, time for a equivalent trip away from religion.

SQ is seriously dancing the Butthurt Fandango over on the Marvel thread. A post of mine from January outlines the steps in that dance:

He can either step back or he can keep using that thread to dance the Butthurt Fandango:

Step 1: Drop a turd of a post on a thread.
Step 2: When other people express annoyance at a turd being dropped, claim it is not a turd but rather “valuable insight”.
Step 3: When others explain the turd smells like shit, claim they are being ‘paranoid’ and it in fact smells like Breath of Spring.
Step 4: Drop additional turd comments.
Step 5: Become outraged and refuse to admit error when others start openly faulting the dropping of turds.
Step 6: Deliver a hostile rant bemoaning the blog’s direction and commentators.
Step 7: Get booted out on ass by Charles.
Step 8: Register at the “Diary of Dorkus” Stalker Site and bitterly lament that “that Tyrant Chuck banned me without one word of warning!”

You know, I think I and a lot of other people would have no issue with that simple statement.

On the other hand, just like atheists rightfully bristle at the thought that they cannot be moral people because morality requires religion, pretending that everything religion contributes to a person’s life is evil and everyone should drop religion RIGHT THIS INSTANT or they are fundamentalist idiots deserves a similar response.

Paul Blasts MSNBC, AP: ‘If I Were Their Journalism Teacher In College, I Would Fail Them’

Paul told National Review’s Robert Costa that he’s been treated unfairly, saying the press coverge of the plagiarism “annoys the hell out of me.”

“I’m being criticized for not having proper attribution, and yet they are able to write stuff that if I were their journalism teacher in college, I would fail them,” Paul said.

The Kentucky senator made it clear which outlets would receive the failing grades, singling out MSNBC and the Associated Press for their coverage of his speech last month at Liberty University, which included several passages lifted verbatim from Wikipedia.

“After a thoughtful speech, where I made six or eight references to 1984, Gattaca, My Left Foot, Einstein, Ray Bradbury, and Michelangelo, I’m then criticized for taking a couple lines from Wikipedia and nobody reports on what the speech was even about,” Paul said. “At least I saw the movie Gattaca, I read the book 1984. They didn’t even read my damn speech.”

Journalism Professor Would Flunk Rand Paul For An ‘Unambiguous Case Of Plagiarism’

“It appears that the Senator from Kentucky is choosing to attack the messenger rather than specifically address what appears to be an unambiguous case of plagiarism,” he said in an email. “Had one of my Journalism students made the same mistakes, I would fail them for each individual assignment and refer the case to the appropriate university office that deals with honor code violations.”

Freep thinks internet porn is a communist plot to destroy the white race, goes full stormfront

I view internet porn as a deliberate globalist plot to destroy America. In 2012, the white population in America declined for the first time in history, something that did not even take place during big wars and the great depression. The number of white Americans who died outnumbered the white Americans who were born by 12,400. I suspect internet porn played a major role in that tragedy. medicaldaily.com

However, I think CL or someone posted his initial unedited comment, which kind of had a Sam Harris/Dawkins-esque “All religions suck, but Islam is suckier” flavor. His description of the super heroine’s mom as a religious zealot didn’t match the description in the original post.

After that, it seemed like the hole could not be dug deep enough.

That is TOTALLY FAIR because I think it is human nature to judge, honestly, and we can’t get away from that. But in a lot of cases adults know there is nothing to be gained from voicing that opinion (since it is an opinion) and so mature people can keep their mouths shut unless someone is stupid enough to do it first.

I haven’t read the thread fully, but if the gist of it is he’d like to see a religious character in a comic break out and adopt atheism I agree with him. Media is full of instances where religion is the desired outcome, time for a equivalent trip away from religion.

I’d personally like to see religion disappear completely.

The problem is that the character in question is a Muslim Superheroine, and there are few enough of those in the marvel universe that you can count on one a hand.

In context it does not come across as very appropriate to portray the idea that the “good Muslims” stop being Muslims/stop being religious.

There’s nothing wrong with the basis of a character struggling win ith what their religious beliefs should be, but lets not go around creating unneeded unfortunate implications.

Wingnuttia refuses to deal with the fact that Hitler wanted to create a support system for a small group of “real Germans”…on the backs of far larger population of enslaved Slavs. with resources appropriated from other groups that were outright exterminated. Universality was anathema.

National socialism was pretty incoherent—“The Nazis were Dumbasses” needs to a Cracked article—but the one continuous theme was:

“We pure Aryans deserve everything, and every other race are moochers and takers. Therefore we’ll build a system where everybody gets what they deserve (and coincidentally, that means we gets everything)”

I actually have to say that I agree with the concept being expressed in that statement, but from a completely different angle.

Money for sex is money for sex. But rather than approaching it as “prostitution is illegal therefore porn should be illegal”, I go the other way. Porn is legal, therefore prostitution should be legal. Take the criminal element out of it, get people licensed and regularly tested with a decent health support network and standards.

Any time someone brings up the Nazis and their brutality against Jews - they should be reminded that the Nazis murdered millions of Jews that lived in Poland, Russia, and other territories the Germans invaded. Only a fraction of the total number of Jews murdered in the Holocaust were German - many fled as Hitler imposed greater restrictions as the 1930s wore on - including the Nuremberg laws that restricted what Jews could own, and businesses they could operate. Jewish doctors were soon unable to treat anyone who wasn’t Jewish, unable to get into medical schools, hospitals, etc.

These folks continue to expropriate the history of the Holocaust and get key facts (which are easily verifiable) wrong.

I actually think they are correct. They won’t admit it of course but McAuliffe is unlikable. I We also have to remember that despite NOVA’s image to the media as this sea of blue it really isn’t that simple. McDonnell won in Fairfax County a year after Obama killed McCain there. And also the very red areas make up a good enough chunk where any Republican should get over 45% of the vote in a contested GE. i thought it would be further apart but no way I thought McAuliffe would beat him by more than 10. I thought 6 at the most.

He had some health troubles IIRC that may have influenced that. I think the other Dem senator there is fairly up there in years but yeah he made a big mistake in not running but let’s face it. Hindsight is 20/20. Castle was a former governor and longtime at large Congressman whose popularity probably mirrored Daddy Joe in Delaware. Delaware is another state that people think is ultra liberal because it’s become blue in elections like that one but it’s really not.

I have relatives that are paranoid schizophrenics whose delusions resulted in violent behavior. One is institutionalized and will likely never get out. It’s impossible to describe the intermingled sense of fear and pity you feel watching it go down.

Wingnuts and other political nuts aren’t like that. They’re enjoying their narrative of oppression, because built into it is a sense of their own rectitude…and anticipation of a time when they can dish out some righteous retaliation.

Heh yeah. I was never too impressed with McAuliffe as DNC chair but when he first ran for governor here back in 2009, he just came off so fake. Deeds ended up being disappointing and no eligible Dem was beating McDonnell that year but I just didn’t like the guy. i still don’t especially after reading he plans to keep some of McDonnell’s people on board. I am okay with some bipartisanship of course but I don’t like that we defeated an anti abortion zealot and he’s planning to keep a member of McDonnell’s cabinet that was okay with the transvaginal ultraounds until Bobby’s ambitions for better or worse kicked in.
