Creationists Turn Against Pat Robertson for Saying Earth Isn’t 6,000 Years Old

What Robertson said in response to the viewer, however, was that, in spite of what Creationists and Ireland’s Archbishop James Ussher [1581-1656] say, the Earth is not 6,000 years old. Ussher was a Christian cleric who claimed to have pinpointed the moment of Creation to the day.

Hoving and Taylor laughingly dismissed the idea that Ussher could be wrong in any way, with Taylor asking rhetorically of Robertson, “Do you assume then that Archbishop James Ussher had no actual evidence for his proposition when he wrote such a big book. People talk about this 6,000 years that Archbishop Ussher came up with.”

He continued, “Pat Robertson is claiming, then, that 6,000 years comes from Ussher’s book and not the Bible. The point is, where did Ussher get his figure of 6,000 years?” Taylor believes that number comes from deep study of the dates and events named in the Bible.

“Now, then, Pat Robertson,” he said, “are you claiming the Bible is not [divinely] inspired when the Bible clearly tells us that the world is 6,000 years old?”

Where does it clearly state that again?

It’s always amazed me that we had an enormous flood during a period in time when the Egyptians were actually in a historically-known dynasty. And afterwards, Noah’s children apparently repopulated the world, and put the Egyptian civilization back together EXACTLY AS IT HAD BEEN. And _no one said a word about it_.

Sumerians Look On In Confusion As God Creates World

Members of the earth’s earliest known civilization, the Sumerians, looked on in shock and confusion some 6,000 years ago as God, the Lord Almighty, created Heaven and Earth.

According to recently excavated clay tablets inscribed with cuneiform script, thousands of Sumerians—the first humans to establish systems of writing, agriculture, and government—were working on their sophisticated irrigation systems when the Father of All Creation reached down from the ether and blew the divine spirit of life into their thriving civilization.

“I do not understand,” reads an ancient line of pictographs depicting the sun, the moon, water, and a Sumerian who appears to be scratching his head. “A booming voice is saying, ‘Let there be light,’ but there is already light. It is saying, ‘Let the earth bring forth grass,’ but I am already standing on grass.”

Point is, there is no arguing with these people, we can only hope to limit the amount of camage they can do.

Ussher did the best he could with the resources and information he had. He might have applied a little more common sense in light of the rocks and hills he could see around him but, still, he has an excuse. That is much, much more than we can say for these present-day purveyors of ignorance and superstition.

The history of science on this point is interesting. In the 1800s, geologists and biologists were both considering a seriously old earth, while the physics of the day tended to give age estimates in conflict with the time scales considered by the geologist and biologists (although much longer than the farcical 6000 years).

Rather than declare one side or the other victorious, the scientific community simply lived with this as an open problem.

It was finally settled by the discovery of nuclear reactions, especially those that provide the sun’s energy output.

What goes beyond negligence is the fact that Ryan told NBC News producers and reporters key details about her story that they chose to omit, including this doozy about the plan that Cigna canceled: it didn’t cover maternity care, for which she paid nearly $16,000 out of pocket this year. She also told me that the $510 premium for her Cigna plan had been jacked up from $465 this year, and that the plan only covered her, not her husband and new baby. “I definitely believe there should be healthcare reform and honestly, I’m glad the reform is happening,” she told me. “The fact I am a successful woman business owner, yet had to pay out of pocket close to $16,000 to have my daughter felt like I was the one being punished. So yes, reform is necessary.”

She also told me that when she left ABC4, she tried to COBRA her group health benefits at $484 /mo, but Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina denied her coverage because of several preexisting cond

Very true. In the absence of any other information on empirical subjects like geology etc., filling in the blanks with mythology is practically irresistible.

As more becomes known about the natural world, such myths stand painfully exposed as having no basis, and people who cling to belief in such dated myths deserve much more mockery than they get.

Although Dkos has a ban on conspiracy theories this one made to rec list: ACLU’s Senior Policy Analyst Offers NSA Blackmail Conspiracy Theory

Do we know that some members of Congress have been approached by NSA officials in possession of compromising personal information? Do we know that members of Congress vociferously expressing support for the NSA hare doing so for reasons other than political ideology or a concern for electoral politics.
No.

Unfortunately, we know too much already to rule such scenarios out as the stuff of Hollywood. We know too much already about the NSA’s surveillance reach, and about its failure to disclose such activities.

As revelations continue to trickle out from the documents Edward Snowden provided Glenn Greenwald and others - and there will be more revelations - perhaps we’ll be able to put Stanley’s theory to rest.

My fear is that the opposite will be the case.

Dkos often floats this kind of garbage so it’s not surprising. Although I often disagree with the ACLU they do serve a valuable purpose but this is New world Order/Military-Insdustial Complex/Oliver Stone stuff. I’d really hate to see the ACLU completely discredit itself with tinfoil hat nonsense.

The ACLU I knew from the 60s on were those lawyers who did little more than civil rights cases. That didn’t change much until after those rights were firmly secured in cases of schools, employment, etc. I worked for several during the early 70s who didn’t do a lot more than Title VII and school busing cases in Charlotte. That kept them very busy. And, of course, representing plenty of protesters back during the Vietnam War era (including me). Actually, most of them were left of center politically, not libertarian.

Yeah, that’s some pretty fucked up argument from ignorance, Russell’s Teapot bullshit. This is what the event horizon of a conspiracy theory looks like, where it swallows up nothingness and incorporates it as supporting evidence. Not even wrong, unfalsifiable, and pathetic. Sad to see the ACLU go down this path.

96 Killgore Trout  Wed, Nov 6, 2013 3:42:56pm

re: #80 Justanotherhuman

The ACLU I knew from the 60s on were those lawyers who did little more than civil rights cases. That didn’t change much until after those rights were firmly secured in cases of schools, employment, etc. I worked for several during the early 70s who didn’t do a lot more than Title VII and school busing cases in Charlotte. That kept them very busy. And, of course, representing plenty of protesters back during the Vietnam War era (including me). Actually, most of them were left of center politically, not libertarian.

Ah, I think we have some confusion about terminology. The left (aka) liberals have always had a healthy libertarian movement. But I think you do have a point, somewhere through the 70-80’s libertarian influence receded as the left moved away from liberal towards progressive.

Idaho woman fired over ‘immoral’ Facebook photo, but football coach boyfriend is not

An Idaho high school basketball coach was fired after posting a picture of her boyfriend touching her chest on Facebook, but the boyfriend, who coaches football at the same school, is still at his job.

“I don’t feel that photo is something to have me terminated on,” former Pocatello High girls’ head coach Laraine Cook told KIFI-TV in an interview aired on Monday. “I don’t feel it’s an immoral photo, and that’s what the termination is based on.”

The photo, in which both Cook and football coach Tom Harrison were dressed in swimsuits, was reportedly taken over the summer and posted briefly on Cook’s Facebook. KIFI reported that Cook was reprimanded by the school at the time, and the photo was taken offline. But the picture was later brought to the attention of state School District 25 officials by an unidentified source, spurring the decision to fire her on Oct. 24. Harrison was reportedly reprimanded.

according to my way of thinking, ‘progressives’, an historical movement, are a broad group of people who think that it might be possible to use government to improve people’s lives, and ‘libertarians’ are people who want to eliminate government to the greatest extent possible. ‘liberal’ to me is a fuzzy term meaning ‘not conservative’

re: #43 Killgore Trout

Although Dkos has a ban on conspiracy theories this one made to rec list: ACLU’s Senior Policy Analyst Offers NSA Blackmail Conspiracy Theory

The problem is that there is already ample precedent for that kind of thing still well within living memory with Hoover and COINTELPRO. Hoover did indeed use intelligence gathering for blackmail and to discredit political figures he did not like (especially anybody who was involved with MLK, the Freedom Riders or any other civil rights outfit at the time). Hoover was not above outright fabrication of lies that could smear private citizens

See what he did to one suburban housewife, Viola Liuzzo, who went to give civil rights workers some transportation help and was murdered by the Klan and an FBI informant:

After Liuzzo’s death, the FBI was concerned that they might be held accountable for their informant’s (Rowe) role in the death. Rowe had been an informant for the FBI since 1960. The FBI was aware that Rowe had participated in violent activities during Ku Klux Klan activities. On the day of Liuzzo’s death, Rowe called his FBI contact and notified him that Rowe and other Klansman were travelling to Montgomery, and that violence was planned.[16] After Liuzzo’s death, the FBI initiated a cover-up campaign, to obscure the fact that an FBI informant was in the car, and to ensure that the FBI was not held responsible for permitting their informant to participate in violent acts, without FBI surveillance or backup.[17]

FBI director J. Edgar Hoover initiated a campaign to discredit Liuzzo in the eyes of the public. Hoover insinuated to President Johnson that Liuzzo was a drug addict, that she had sex with Moton, and that her husband was involved with organized crime. The FBI leaked the allegations to the media, and several newspapers repeated the claims. Liuzzo’s husband attempted to defend his wife’s reputation; his daughter Penny states that the disinformation campaign “took the life right out of him .. he started drinking a lot”. Autopsy testing in 1965 showed no traces of drugs in Liuzzo’s system, and that she had not had sex recently at the time of death. The FBI’s role in the smear campaign was uncovered in 1978 when Liuzzo’s children obtained case documents from the FBI under the Freedom of Information Act.[18]

The lawsuit filed by her oldest son was dismissed in the early 80’s despite the uncovered evidence. It was recently discovered that he had drifted into anti government militia circles, partly as a result of the government smear campaign against his family.

I have no opinion on the merit of whatever the ACLU is saying. I merely point out that that US agencies have misused law enforcement and intelligence services in the past in order to discredit and harass private citizens and political figures within the last 50 years, and that an entire operation in the FBI was built on that premise.

That’s marvelous. I got the wife addicted to WoW when I moved here, and we’ve been co-leaders of a small Alliance raiding guild ever since. We had an in-game wedding the week before our real one, officiated by our resident healy priest and paladin.

The wife is a moonkin druid and I am a tank paladin. I was never sure it was right for him - a guy On The Spectrum in a noisy, chaotic, hot environment for 8 hours, working as part of a team, for the benefit of other people he didn’t know?

Well, they decided it isn’t a good fit for him. He was crushed initially, even though I don’t think it was his heart’s desire. He just has reached the point where he wants to do SOMETHING. (Honestly, he’s so bright he needs to do something challenging.)

But he’s bouncing back very well, and when Mrs. Jockey hugged him this morning, he said, “I’m okay, Mom. I just need to be upset for a while.” I was surprised and very pleased by him expressing that level of mature self-awareness.

Our guild fell apart around the end of Wrath (a bunch of core folks left to go elsewhere - I still hold GL on an alt because that’s the guild where we met and I am a sucker) and we ended up in a new one formed by folks who’ve raided together on and off since BC.

Our guild has held on through gaining and losing members, and we’re 13/14 Siege of Orgrimmar right now with our group. I think if our guild fell apart, we’d probably just quit, for exactly the reason you mentioned. We’ve invested tons of time and effort in our current crew, and if they all left, we wouldn’t want to spend that kind of time and effort again.

I am still friends with folks from the original guild, even excluding the husband. Some came to our wedding. We’ve been to weddings.

It was one of the few times I put myself out in an effort to actively build a relationship with folks online and it was fantastic, but it was also lucky to find a place where it was possible, and as much as I might like that again sometimes …that’s a lot of effort.

Instead I post at you all here.

Yeah, I feel you there. I’m a natural introvert and my guild was one of the few communities, like here, that was able to draw me out and make me feel comfortable being outside my shell. I still have friends who are former guildies that I talk to on a regular basis out of game.

I think he LIKES cooking, but if he were going to do it as a career, I’d expect to see him digging into it more - reading cookbooks, trying out new recipes, etc. I think a lot of it is that his social anxiety has kind of isolated him. We’re a family of introverts, and he’s probably the most introverted of us - which is saying a lot!

I think he needs a career where he can work on his own but isn’t isolated from others. In a way, Science would be perfect for him, especially the kind of stuff I do, which is more ‘genetic engineering’ and problem-solving than pure science. We’re a family of tinkerers and troubleshooters.

213 GeneJockey  Wed, Nov 6, 2013 4:55:20pm

What I meant is that his social anxiety has isolated him, but as he’s matured and learned how to cope, he wants to get out in the world. He just doesn’t know how. And the cooking school would have been a structured environment, where he could just do the work, and over time he could open up.

He did that in two classes at local colleges, but the one was a hand-on sort of course, and the other was a discussion course, rather than a lecture, so there were opportunities to interact with other students within the context of the course first, and then gradually work up to the personal level as his comfort level grew.

Silk Road — and ‘Dread Pirate Roberts’ — back on Web

newsday.com

“The Silk Road, a near-replica of the notorious online marketplace for illegal drugs, came online Wednesday — a little more than a month after the U.S. Department of Justice shut down its predecessor of the same name.

“Like the original Silk Road, the new website uses the anonymous Web surfing tool Tor and hard-to-trace digital currency Bitcoin to try to cover the tracks of drug dealers and users. The new site had more than 500 listings for drugs for sale Wednesday, from cocaine to Ecstasy, and is scheduled to officially start taking orders this week, according to an announcement on the site.

“The site’s administrator is a person called “Dread Pirate Roberts,” the same pseudonym allegedly used by Ross Ulbricht, a San Francisco man federal authorities have charged was the original Silk Road owner.”

Allow me to weigh in on this bully incident in the NFL.
1.) This is not a bullying issue. Men 6’3” 320lbs that are elite athletes don’t get just pushed around like when we were 14 yrs. old in school..
Nope this is an intimidation issue.. Who doesn’t know some crazy fuck that isn’t very big but crazy as hell? Even a pro faced with that in the workplace is going to cross the street to stay away from the crazy fuck. Richie has a long long long history of being crazy as a bed bug..It is not bullying at all..
2.) The Miami team is destroyed this year..The locker room is ashes and dust. Word out today that some black team mates are backing Richie over Marten saying that he is more black than Marten, who is a mixed blood.
Richie is the black man now to some team mates.. The locker room just got blown up by an A-Bomb. Up is down and here is the root cause….
3.) Leadership.. In all endeavours whether business, sports or School.
There must be leadership to succeed..It has failed in Miami.
I think sometimes we judge teams or people on strickly talent and overlook leadership, heart and strength. ” Character is everything Bob ”
/Stole that line from the American President..

I read about it. Incognito’s got a reputation of being a dirty player IIRC. I do agree that this is more intimidation than mere bullying. I was glad to hear from Polamalu that this sort of thing doesn’t go on with the Steelers and that he instead was welcomed with open arms as a rookie and he continues to that now as a veteran. Makes me feel better about them despite the disappointing season. A little teasing is fine but what Incognito did to Jon Martin was horrible. I hope he never gets a job again in the NFL.

I’ve wanted to start an anti-social site, but I wouldn’t want to be a member, so it never went anywhere!

The large image of that zebra herd is eye-popping.

Once again…mom nature proves to be one of the best artists/designers around.

What a great image.

I had to pop over and take a look. “It went down hill from there” is a nicely understated way of putting it. :)

Well, even though he irks the hell out of me at times, DF called it right.

Don’t feed the troll

Leadership and respect.. I’ll never forget when we played Oakland Tech and I was sick and terrified of my guy..We had a great leader that played power forward..I’m in a bathroom stall and he came in and put his arms around me and built me up to play as I was throwing up..It really helped to inspire me to play HARD. I wasn’t Bullyied but intimidated.
Otherwise I wouldn’t have been banned from the Napa church Basketball league for a year. They are such pussies..ohhh you touched me! Shut the hell up you baby..
Oh Ref! He said a bad word!
Really? Really? You call yourself a baller? Soon after.. and a few good old hard fouls.
I got a one year ban.

Haven’t seen the Dolphin’s Bully story covered here and it is white hot on every channel and outlet.

I’d say intimidation is part of it, and it also seems the intimidation also led to extortion. Almost pay to play like gansters asking for payment for protection or something to that effect. If they were told to get him toughened up, they then took it to doing it anyway they could and would benefit them too. Really crazy stuff. It’s almost like the team owner is going to have to dump the entire organization and start over as a new franchise.

re: #233 HappyWarrior

RI’s team mates say that he has a lot in common with them. Statistics show the NFL has more felons and “arrestees” playing than any other pro sport even allowing for the larger rosters than other sports. It has to be a shock for a nice kid from a good family to realize his dream of in the NFL and find himself in a locker room with criminals and scumbags. It reminds me of a student who I encouraged to join the Navy. He was posted to an aircraft carrier and found himself in a below-deck ghetto (his words) worse that the one his parents escaped from.

Since it took about 1700 years from the Bible until Ussher managed to work out a date, maybe it wasn’t so obvious in the Bible after all?
