60 Minutes Backing Down on Benghazi Report? Update: CBS Pulls 60 Minutes Benghazi Video Page

“New information undercuts the account told to us by Morgan Jones”
Media • Views: 25,337

A terse announcement at the 60 Minutes website indicates that CBS has realized they can’t ignore this one any more: 60 Minutes Reviewing Account of Morgan Jones on Benghazi.

60 Minutes has learned of new information that undercuts the account told to us by Morgan Jones of his actions on the night of the attack on the Benghazi compound.

We are currently looking into this serious matter to determine if he misled us, and if so, we will make a correction.

(h/t: Gus.)

UPDATE at 11/7/13 5:56:48 pm

Yeah, umm, when I got to the bolded part, my bullshit detector exploded. FAKE BUT ACCURATE!

No, it should be a bullhorn in your face blaring DON’T RUN WITH THIS STORY!

Hmm… you know, there used to be a time when news organizations would do things like … fact checking … before they aired the story.

But, then again, their bullshit detectors need to be sent back to the factory for recalibration. Seriously, his story of “heroics” on his part had all sorts of unlikely events in it.

“We are currently looking into this serious matter…”

Now Benghazi is a “serious matter,” now that CBS news is facing embarrassment.

Too bad CBS didn’t take Benghazi seriously when it was “only” a news story, not a source of embarrassment for them. They might have “looked into” it then.

Here’s How CBS Correspondent Lara Logan Describes Her Dubious Benghazi Witness

mediamatters.org

“It’s clear that CBS correspondent Lara Logan truly admires Dylan Davies, the British security contractor with a starring eyewitness role in the 60 Minutes report that has galvanized new attention on the September 2012 attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi, Libya.

(snip)

The 60 Minutes report was the result of a year-long investigation by Logan and producer Max McClellan. In the Q&A, they describe what Logan terms an “exhaustive” interview process, speaking with what McClellen describes as “dozens and dozens and dozens” of background interviews over “months and months.

“Journalism is not about making a case, it’s about finding the facts,” Logan said. “In this story, you had to work really hard to find the facts and not be seduced by anybody.”

So, a “year-long investigation” with “dozens and dozens and dozens” of background interviews over “months and months” still failed to reveal Davies’ lies? Was there, in fact, some kind of seduction? It wouldn’t be the first time Logan has been accused of getting too close to her sources.

News media today is afraid of getting scooped by bloggers and social media. The thing of it is, even though they’re so afraid of it to the point where they’re rushing stories to production, THEY’RE STILL LOSING. Maybe they should step back and use the vast powers of the Interwebs as a proper source, rather than viewing it as competition…

Did 60 Minutes scrub all their Killian Documents reporting from their site?

30 Killgore Trout  Thu, Nov 7, 2013 6:03:01pm

Accounts Differ to F.B.I. and CBS on Benghazi

The information he provided in an F.B.I. interview was described Thursday by two senior government officials as completely consistent with an incident report by the Blue Mountain security business, which had been hired to protect United States interests in Benghazi. The officials who spoke said they had been briefed on the government investigation.

Mr. Davies, who worked for Blue Mountain, has disavowed the incident report, saying in an interview last week with the online magazine The Daily Beast that he did not write it and had never even seen it, and was not responsible for the account of events it contained.

31 Killgore Trout  Thu, Nov 7, 2013 6:04:25pm
Jeff Fager, the chairman of CBS News and executive producer of “60 Minutes,” said Thursday, “We’re surprised to hear about this, and if it shows we’ve been misled, we will make a correction.”
32 Killgore Trout  Thu, Nov 7, 2013 6:06:27pm

OK, now we have unnamed senior government officials giving information to the press to discredit a witness. I think we can all see where this is going. What’s old is new again, like being stuck in a loop.

Charles, in re: your update to this post, it appears they pulled the video of the report they aired on 27 Oct. If you type “benghazi” in the search field, you’ll still get a bunch of Benghazi stuff.

Pulling the report entirely, though, is pretty damning.

I have a lot of complaints against the modern Christian Church as a collective, and I’m a believer; how can I expect non-believers not to bring the same level of criticism or more?

It is but what worries me is these fire and brimstone type churches seem to be growing. I do hope as a baptized Catholic that Francis can make Catholicism a reasonable voice in the religious community. I don’t expect them to suddenly realize “Gays should be able to get married” but I’d be delighted if the church stopped seeing things like gays being able to adopt and marry as a threat to them. And I’d like to see more efforts preventing the conditions that lead to abortion in the first place than just condemning every women who chooses to get one as a slut.

My big thing is that churches are really so self-centered. Christians have made churches into their own little echo chambers where they worship and pray and have their own little rah-rah Jesus club, but it’s not supposed to be like that. Churches are supposed to be freaking SANCTUARIES, where anyone is welcome without judgment to come and meet with Jesus. They’ve strayed from their mission into politics, wealth accumulation, and exclusive socialization. We have the rise of the megachurches to thank for stuff like that. When my great uncle was a RCC priest way back when. It was more community. Now I hear about preachers who drive sports cars and live in mansions. My uncle lived among the poor in a poor Louisiana parish and he sadly also struggled with alcoholism. The irony to me as someone baptized Catholic is seeing Evangelical churches which had their origins criticizing the glitz and glamour of Rome become just like that. I also really resent them using their political views to rationalize their religious views. Christ wasn’t a laissez-faire capitalist. I am not one who believes he was a communist either for that matter.

While CBS is at it, they can also issue a public apology & retraction for Sharyl Attkisson, months back, making the rounds on Fox, Right-wing Radio, Politico and even a CBS News broadcast, clearly suggesting, though not quite stating outright, that her computer was hacked by the DOJ as some sort of retribution for her Benghazi and Fast & Furious “reporting”.

As of late September she still hadn’t completely let it go:

washingtonpost.com

When asked how she knew her machines had been compromised, Attkisson mentioned that they were turning on at night in suspicious ways. Also: “I had people warning me and coming to me as a result of the reporting I was doing on Benghazi. I had sources saying — theorizing, I should say — that you’re being surveilled and then I had excellent sources able to basically tip me off and we were able to confirm much of this with our own technicians. So, I’ve had a lot of help from people who are concerned about what they see going on in some corners of government and with what’s going on with reporters. So I’m thankful for that ‘cause I wouldn’t know, I really wouldn’t know, if I hadn’t had some help.”

Sounds like a bunch of crackpots and conspiracy theorists.

Pulling this quote for emphasis:

Indeed, there can be serious consequences to this type of abstinence-only approach to sexual health instruction. Earlier this year, Elizabeth Smart — a kidnapping and sexual assault victim who now works to prevent predatory crimes — made national headlines when she pointed out emphasizing the importance of purity can make rape victims feel dirty and worthless. Smart described hearing the exact same gum analogy when she was growing up. And after she was repeatedly sexually assaulted, that message had an extremely negative impact on her. “I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, I’m that chewed up piece of gum, nobody re-chews a piece of gum, you throw it away.’ And that’s how easy it is to feel like you no longer have worth, you no longer have value,” she explained.

Purity culture is fucking disgusting.

At least in backward-ass parts of Pakistan, it’s understood that gizzard full of chicken blood is an acceptable substitute for being a virgin on your wedding night.

Yeah I saw what Limbaugh said about single women. That they just want government to help them. Funny Rush, most of the single ladies I’ve known have been very hard working. And my aunt divorced actually but single technically still for the past 30 years, we call her Sarge in our family. A tough cookie that one. I do think there is jealously there. That imbecile Fischer was saying that Cuccinelli won with married women ergo liberals want women to be single so they’ll vote for them. YES. EXACTLY.

If a woman is educated, financially independent, and has full control of her body and her reproduction, she’s far less likely to settle for the first idiot that comes along. She’ll look for a man that treats her as an equal, and a partner. She won’t need to depend on that man to take care of her. She has choices.

For the fundies and MRA assholes, this is a problem. Ergo, their need to push purity culture and deny women their choices.

157 calochortus  Thu, Nov 7, 2013 8:18:12pm

From a remarkably dumb piece on single women’s politics over on RedState:

How can conservatives adjust their strategy to appeal more strongly to the single female society? Well, one obvious approach would be restricting the vote to people who are married. That’s probably not going to fly. It’s hard to imagine anything that would more strongly indicate society’s strong respect and need for stable marriage, though.

So the answer to making your strategy more appealing to a segment of society is to not let them vote? Never mind whether this is a serious suggestion or his attempt at being amusing, there is a complete and total disconnect between the stated desire and the way to get it.

Second, I would suggest that you practice your Christianity without adulterating it. The anomalous situation is that most of us would be equally shocked to see Christianity doubted or put into practice. Third, I would suggest that you put more emphasis on love, for love is the soul and center of Christianity.

In my experience, the more ‘Christian’ a person claims to be, the more the emphasis is on intolerance and bigotry, and very little on love. I have a gay brother, so tend to notice this perhaps more than most….

That’s probably not going to fly. It’s hard to imagine anything that would more strongly indicate society’s strong respect and need for stable marriage, though.

From a remarkably dumb piece on single women’s politics over on RedState:

So the answer to making your strategy more appealing to a segment of society is to not let them vote? Never mind whether this is a serious suggestion or his attempt at being amusing, there is a complete and total disconnect between the stated desire and the way to get it.

Yeah restrict the vote to only married people. Conservatives, if you’re even considering a solution to win more elections is to lessen suffrage, you’re doing it all wrong. Oh and you’ll piss off single guys too. We vote to and we sure as hell would not like our rights being taken away because you can’t accept the fact that your message is toxic to the ladies.

Yeah. But this is what I’m used to out of the right. Coulter has actually joked about getting rid of women’s suffrage entirely. I’m sure some of the more nutty ones would love to say they’d love to restrict suffrage to people only born in America or even to only whites but they won’t say it. What they still refuse to get is people find the social reactionary messages they have toxic.

The thing they have against single women isn’t about any reality it is their vision of a single woman. Children from multiple dads, getting knocked up in order to get even more of that sweet welfare money. I think that is most likely what Fischer is trying to go with at least.

So people like Honey Boo Boo’s family?

Mama June’s 4 kids come from 4 different fathers; she married two of them. She’s been on and off welfare repeatedly. She has a criminal record, as does her current husband. The oldest daughter is a high school dropout with a child of her own, which makes Mama June a 35 -year-old grandmother.

I’m sure that’s who Bryan was talking about. He tells his audience it’s a sin to glorify that family by watching that show.

In my experience, the more ‘Christian’ a person claims to be, the more the emphasis is on intolerance and bigotry, and very little on love. I have a gay brother, so tend to notice this perhaps more than most….

I know. Drives me fucking bonkers.

I came to my faith fairly late in life and even then I don’t worry much about anything after this life - it’s supposed to be about how we treat each other damn it. The Golden rule is “do onto others as you want them to do to you” not “do what ever it takes to get into heaven but not any fucking thing else”.

All I want is to teach my son how to live as a good person and to leave this world a little better than it was before I got here. I hope that’s christian enough for the One even as I know it’s not enough for them.

What the hell are you on about now? The “witness” says he lied to his employer, and the senior govt officials have just confirmed that the gave the same story to the FBI. Meaning, according to his new version of events he lied to the FBI as well as his employer. Or he’s lying now. In other words, he’s self discrediting.

I don’t know what kind of fuckwit pollyanna universe you live in but where I come from when you tell a story to multiple parties, including the FBI during an official investigation interview, then later claim that the entire story is a lie, the government is under no obligation not to identify itself as one of the parties that was purportedly lied to.

What is really bad about this kind of dud story is those that want to believe it already have it in their brains as gospel. And a change at a late date either goes unnoticed or will be seen as pressure from the Presidents and his ‘gang’ to change it as a coverup.

Looks like the book deal is being reviewed as well:

nytimes.com

Jennifer Robinson, a spokeswoman for the book’s publisher, Threshold Editions, which is part of the Simon and Schuster unit of CBS, said, “Although we have not seen the F.B.I. report, in light of these revelations we will review the book and take appropriate action with regard to its publication status.”

Which I actually find kind of surprising given the imprint:

Agreed, I can’t imagine either man will drop out of state politics after this. Obenshain is, after all, a “rising star” while Cucci’s failings will be white washed as “strengths” and his failure to beat an equally unlikable challenger as the fault of anyone or anything but his beliefs.

Yeah like Deeds and McDonnell, both these guys were sitting office holders at the time of their race for AG. I’m thinking they’ll want Obenshain for the governor’s race and look for another “rising star” to run against Kaine. I don’t know how popular Kaine is or more obviously how popular he will be in 2018. As we saw with New Jersey, incumbent popularity always plays a role in who runs and who does not. I am just glad that George Allen and Cucci are both done here. McDonnell likely is too with the corruption stench.

It just makes no logical sense to assume that the system can’t be overloaded or taken offline by some unforeseen event. Hell, just regular combat in some series and movies turns a starship’s bridge into a pinball machine. And we’ll not even go into the pathological fear of surge protection that turns control panels into bombs.

Newark, let’s have a discussion.

I get that you need to repave roads occasionally. And I know there are some roads that are going to be terribly inconvenient to deal with. But.

There are some roads where you really do need to either leave one lane open or not start work until after midnight at the earliest. I might suggest that the exit from Newark Airport to ALL THE HIGHWAYS is one of those roads. Because otherwise you have ALL THE TRAFFIC funneling down to one extremely poorly signed lane (signs at street level are not visible through hundreds of cars) at 10pm, when there are still plenty of flights coming into Newark, especially after a wonderful afternoon of delays.

On the other hand, at least I’ve reaffirmed where I get the family temper from.

Well, in that case, seat belts do no good, because if the system IS overloaded, you won’t be thrown out of your chair, you’ll be smeared into a thin organic paste.

It’s a French creepy/horror mystery, with subtitles. I hate subtitles, but this is good enough to be worth it. Two episodes in and it would be hard to pick up in the middle, but they’re rerunning it on Dec 1.

In an idyllic French mountain town, a seemingly random collection of people find themselves in a state of confusion as they attempt to return to their homes. What they do not yet know is that they have been dead for several years, and no one is expecting them back.

Talgo seeks $65.9 million from state for abandoned high-speed rail line

The U.S. arm of a Spanish train-maker filed a $65.9 million claim against the state Thursday, setting up a likely lawsuit and reviving debate over Gov. Scott Walker’s rejection of $810 million in federal stimulus money for a high-speed rail line.

In its filing with the state Claims Board, Seattle-based Talgo Inc. also maintained Wisconsin owes bond holders an additional $70 million because it borrowed that much for two train sets but never took possession of them.

If the train company’s reasoning is correct, taxpayers would have to pay Talgo $65.9 million and immediately refund $70 million to bond holders rather than paying that sum off over the coming years. Even then, the state still wouldn’t own the trains.

The request for more money comes on top of about $40 million the state has already paid Talgo.

Scott Walker is a cancer in this state fed by the corrupt, hateful and ignorant.

Senator threatens ‘all out hell’ if GOP lawmakers take up abortion bills

A Democratic state senator promised “all out hell” next week if Republicans stick to their plan to take up a controversial bill restricting abortion for public workers and limiting access to contraception for employees of religious organizations.

Sen. Jon Erpenbach (D-Middleton) said Tuesday’s session could mirror one in June, when Senate President Mike Ellis (R-Neenah) broke the base of his gavel as he slammed it down to quiet Democrats upset over passing a different abortion bill.

Republicans who run the Senate are tentatively planning to approve two abortion bills on Tuesday.

One would ban any abortions that are sought because of the sex of the fetus. The other would prevent public employees’ health plans from covering most abortions and would also strictly limit the ability of employees of religious organizations to get contraception through their insurance plans.

The Assembly passed both measures in June, and Senate action would send them on to Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

Going back to when my son (now 19) was young, I can’t tell you how many holiday meals/ school events/ soccer games I missed!

We’re 24/7/365 here. I’ve missed Christmas mornings, Thanksgiving dinners, and (partial) summer vacations.

I see one of my posts (#38) was a topic of discussion late last evening. I’m honored, I think.

Good Friday. Got a road trip today…hope it warms up a bit before I go. I still have my summer performance tires on, and they do not like real cold mornings.

Keep up the good debate Lizards.

By the way, did someone sit on Joke Scarborough. He seems to be lucid this morning. Maybe ratings are way down…

Modern life has evolved into a battle for individual primacy, and nowhere else do you find it practiced as fiercely as in libertarianism. A theory which is just pie in the sky idealism about individualism and capitalism (based on a male model), also practiced as simple selfishness and greed which throws empathy and social adjustment into the waste bin, if not directly, then under the guise of charity and foundations which privately mold public policy and can influence elections. It comes today in the form of technology, not industrialization, but the sweatshops and robber barons have merely been brought into the 21st century in a different form. And nowhere does libertarian ideology and technology mesh more perfectly than on the internet, a kind of do-it-yourself entertainment central.

There is a blind faith in technology, just as there was in industrialization, which will continue to allow this type of thinking to influence people and dominate their lives, but the human cost may be just as great, or greater. Technology won’t change the human condition or our behavior, it will just speed everything up. When you look at what the influences are on the internet, for instance, such as social media, and examine them closely, it can be depressing and negative as people exploit their own need for recognition and parlay it into just more crap to wade through in an increasingly junkified world while they avoid real life consequences out there in the ether. And when anger becomes the dominant emotion in any venue, we’re in serious trouble—and it can be contagious.

But do we really want kings in just another name? In just another form? Where women are simply tolerated even as they play the game? Libertarians can quote and “respect” a woman who took up and promoted this kind of thinking because because she was in thrall to an ideology of male supremacy which she allowed to dominate her own thinking. I mean, in real life would John Galt have gone the way of SS and Medicare and living off the charity of others as Rand did?

Even Ayn Rand couldn’t practice in reality what she preached in fiction because it’s an impossibility. In any event, she would have wound up second class in a world of her own invention because it’s not the cheerleaders who achieve top dog status, it’s the players. And winning is always the goal, no matter how dirty you play the game.

What has really changed in the course of humanity? Basically, we humans have not—we just think we have. The settings, the venues, the superficialities of life, are what change, not the needs, the wants, the desires. How we express those is what’s important.

Greed and individual ambition have to been seen as forces of nature that can be harnessed, but must be contained.

Flowing water can drive a turbine or irrigate a field if channelized, but it can wipe out entire cities if left unchecked.

And Free market ideologues and libertarians are all about tearing down the laws and regualtions that keep their ambition and greed in check.

We have seen the results.

Imagine we decide that traffic lights are an impediment to freedom of travel. What do we get? At first a system that rewards those with the biggest cars and the most aggressive driving style, but eventually we get gridlock, one that emergency services can no longer get through.

And we have to get a traffic cop out on every intersection to untangle the mess.

Bush took down the traffic lights, we hit financial gridlock and Obama had to play the traffic cop.

But face it, nobody likes red lights or traffic cops.

* UPDATE : This post has turned out to be popular beyond our wildest dreams so we felt the need for a bit of clarification . Due to a shortage in our editorial staff we were unable to corroborate the central claim to this story . Admittedly we only had an hour or so to try and find a link to the voter registration rolls and we failed to do so . It would have been very helpful had the original source provided a link to “Mike’s” disclosure and we would be grateful to any reader that can provide back-up to the assertion that Ciancia is in fact a registered democrat .

The inmates did the country a favor . One less s***bag for the taxpayers to feed . Justice is sometimes served and even some of the most hardened criminals have limitations to what they find acceptable .
Note: After the fact , we found that this story dates from 2011 but we’ve decided to post it anyway as it is a story of hope even as it is of brutality .

Implying they believed it was a new or recent story. Great standards over there.

I can see this also happening in the US. My 3 yr old g-son has not been taken off milk, as his pediatrician suggests, and also takes a multi-vitamin every single day, in addition to getting sun when weather permits. My own sons also drank milk w/meals and usually spent the entire day outside when they weren’t at school (where they also had recess).

I may have had rickets as a child (my legs are bowed), but I know for certain that my sister suffered from malnutrition after a year in that Baptist orphanage—she could barely walk when we left. She wouldn’t eat most of what little starchy food was offered and refused to take the weekly cod liver oil we were forced to take as a laxative.

Nazis Who Love Cats

Cats are definitely the animal kingdom’s most photogenic species. There is something about kitties on film that melts our cold cynical hearts into pools of warm milk. Which is why I was surprised to find them frolicking with Nazis in this positively adorable war-time photo series. This Tumblr may just be the internet’s starkest juxtaposition of cute and sinister ever.

Most of those men are Army or Luftwaffe personnel, with at least one Kriegsmarine sub crew (cats are traditional companions on warships, because they eat mice and rats). Not necessarily Nazis themselves.

Many military units throughout history have kept mascots or pets. It helps men deal with the stresses of combat and being a soldier. We’ve seen many cases of American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan adopting animals.

Besides, looks to be a slow news day other than the Typhoon striking the Philippines, a possible deal in the works with Iran in 5-party talks in Geneva, and Palestinians are again blaming Israel for Arafat’s death (not really news, but an ongoing state of existence kind of thing).

Starbucks looking to hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses (VIDEO)

Now, though, gun owners might have a reason to once again support Starbucks. That is, Schultz announced plans to hire 10,000 veterans and active duty spouses over the next five years.

“The value we are creating for shareholders is tied to the values that guide us as an organization. As I look at the opportunity ahead of us, we’re going to need to hire men and women with like-minded values and the right job skills in order to continue our current levels of growth,” said Schultz.

“The more than one million transitioning U.S. veterans and almost one and half million military spouses - with their diverse background and experience - share our mission-driven sensibility and work ethic and can build long-term careers at Starbucks as they return home,” he continued.

In addition to hiring veterans and their spouses, the java giant is opening up five community stores in U.S. joint base locations to help fund local nonprofit programs that support veterans re-entering the workforce. In other words, it’s more than just jobs at Starbucks Schultz is offering to servicemen and servicewomen, it’s financial support to find careers elsewhere.

Plus, this Veteran’s Day, Monday, Nov. 11, Starbucks is giving away free tall brewed coffee to veterans, active duty military and military spouses.

They don’t as proven by booing a guy who was active military - but gay, the pols prove it by fucking over military with every piece of legislation they draft (or vote down), The military are pawns only and Starbucks looking to hire them will not sway the wingnuts.

And this is the saddest goddamned thing. These people fight in our name, they do as they are told, and then come home and get screwed. This alone is enough to make me despise Republicans. To them, these American men and women - The Troops - are memes alone. It’s disgusting.

Who said anything about wingnuts? Most gun owners aren’t wingnuts, neither are most soldiers and veterans, and the CEO of Starbucks is most assuredly not a wingnut.
