Republicans Just Changed the Rules AFTER a Virginia Election to Change the Outcome

Doing whatever it takes to win.
Politics • Views: 17,366

Already shaping up to be one of the closest races in state history, a last-minute rule change is stirring up the recount to decide who will become Virginia’s next attorney general.

The Daily Press of Newport News, Va. reported Friday that Republican candidate Mark Obenshain had an unofficial lead of just under 1,300 votes over Democratic challenger Mark Herring. That tally did not include full provisional ballot totals, and as of Saturday, a fresh rule change was complicating matters.

According to a report by WTOP radio, the Virginia State Board Of Elections decided Friday to change rules relevant to Fairfax County, banning legal representatives from helping count votes, unless the associated voter was actually present. The board changing the rules is dominated by Republicans.

Looks like this election and its associated lawsuits will drag on for a while.

How the hell is that legal? And we won’t hear a word from the wingnuts who claim with any actual basis in fact that McAuliffe “stole” it from Cucci. This sucks. Herring was actually IMO the best guy the Dems ran on the ticket this year in Virginia. Obenshain may not be outright nutty like Jackson or Cuccinelli but he’s just as nuts when you look at what he’s voted for as a state senator. He just puts on a better mask.

Is this legal?

They did this same stupid sh*t for the Colorado Recall. They decided that AFTER the mail in ballots were mailed that you had to vote in person.

Why does this remind me of bullying?

Because it is bullying and it’s another reason why I laugh when I hear GOP activists claim that their party is fighting voter fraud.

And it’s the biggest county in the state and one of the most Democratic. This is such horse shit. Only good thing that can come out of this is it will show that Obenshain isn’t the bipartisan guy he sold himself as. To me, he’s from the same boat as Cucci and Jackson, he just isn’t as openly outrageous.

The Onion will end its print run in December, closing up shop in final three cities

Satirical newspaper The Onion will soon be only a satirical website. Today, Chicago Business announced that the remaining three print markets — Chicago, Milwaukee, and Providence, Rhode Island — will close up shop after the December 12th edition. Responding to the closure, company president Mike McAvoy told Chicago Business in an interview that “it’s important to see The Onion succeed,” despite sadness at the change. At its peak, The Onion was printed in nearly 20 cities, but that number has been steadily shrinking in recent years. In 2010, it decided to fully franchise its print edition — local companies would license Onion content, sell their own ads, and print and distribute the free papers on their own. “We have no intention of abandoning our print roots,” said CEO Steve Hannah at the time.

We’ve been talking about 3-D Printing a lot lately, and now it seems the Army is getting into the act:

Logistics: Combat Zone Parts Factory 3.0

November 9, 2013: The U.S. Army continues to develop its decade old MPH (Mobile Parts Hospital) concept for instant fabrication of parts in a combat zone. The latest version, called Ex Lab (Expeditionary Lab), is more compact and relies more on 3-D parts builders (3-D printers) and operators trained to help users come up with designs for components that don’t yet exist. It’s often the case that troops discover the need for a new component or improved replacement part for their equipment. In the past this request had to go back to the original factory for development and manufacturing. But with the software and equipment available now, as well as satellite data links to factories, it is possible to get this work done quickly in the combat zone. Thus, the new name for what is essentially MPH 3.0.

The MPH was developed when the army realized that the easiest and quickest way to get the many rarely requested, but vital, replacement parts to the troops was to manufacture the parts in the combat zone. After September 11, 2001, this led to the construction of a portable parts fabrication system called MPH, which fit into a standard 8x8x20 foot shipping container. The original version used two containers, but smaller equipment and more powerful computers eventually made it possible to use one container. By 2010, there were four MPH systems in service, two of them in Afghanistan. Since then two more have been built, for under $2 million each. In the last decade MPHs have manufactured over 150,000 parts on the spot saving lots of time, shipping expense, and aggravation for troops needing the item. This saved days, or weeks, that it would take to order the part from the manufacturer. The MPH part is usually a lot cheaper (because the air freight and manufacturer mark ups to pay for maintaining the part in inventory). The next version of the MPH had a 3-D part builder, which uses metal dust and a laser to build a part. This was MPH 2.0.

Sort of surprised the Army’s getting away with this. Figured the manufacturers would be throwing a shit fit over the idea that they’re not getting paid hefty fees to provide years worth of replacement parts at massively inflated prices.

Not sure. That’s not something the Army shares. But remember that this sort of part is intended more as a stop-gap rather than as a long term replacement. The 3-D printed metal parts are supposed to be able to last long than earlier powder-cast parts, hence the system upgrade.

GOP Rules for Winning a Game

1. Change the rules for financing the game

2. Changed ruled to keep some people from playing the game

If that doesn’t work……….

3. Change the rules after the game to get people retroactively kicked out of the game already played………………………………………….

WINING!

Thing about it is that there’s going to be a tipping point. As 3D printers adapt to produce more complex, longer lasting products, manufacturers are going to get antsy. Stop-gaps and one-offs are one thing, but the day’s going to come when the Army feels confident enough in the tech to want to be able to produce guns on the battlefield for standard issue. When that comes, the shit storm will commence.

I think the manufacturers will adapt to use the new tech themselves. Ultimately, it’ll prove cheaper and require a smaller labor force. The machines will come in, and the workers made redundant will get laid off.

How many of the republicans who kept the properly armored vehicles and body armor from the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq paid for it? None.

How many have paid for the hash they’ve made of the VA repeatedly? None.

The troops are nothing to the GOP Chicken Hawks but a flag waving talking point. When they cost anything other than to contributors at defense contractors, they’re suddenly worse than welfare mothers.

Which works great for them (not so much for the workers), but you’re still left with the distance between factory and battlefield. The flexibility of switching out weapons on the fly would be irresistible to the Army, without the added cost of maintaining stockpiles of weapons that have to be maintained when not in use. Add in recycling, which is less a wish and more an inevitability, and you virtually eliminate the need for those manufacturers.

You remember as well as anyone that they didn’t have the mine resistant vehicles they needed for years into the conflict and that people had to send body armor from home. But those aren’t the kinds of things that are important to congress, apparently. That’s right on the SecDef & the congress that didn’t allocate the money. Why? I don’t know but I do know no-one was ever held accountable for those casualties anymore than the ones caused by electrocution in the showers.

The MRAPs didn’t exist at the start of the war, and it was not anticipated that they’d be needed. You can’t call that the same thing as a deliberate attempt to shut down a source of supply to benefit a contractor. when it became clear more body armor was needed, production was stepped up. More contractors stepped in to fill shortages if established producers couldn’t keep up.

The problems you discuss are nothing like the scenario that was under discussion.

Let’s have some more humor, this time of the unintentional variety:

Sarah Palin blasts ‘church of government’

Former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin edged herself back into election politics Saturday, delivering a speech at an important Iowa gathering.

Palin was joined by other major tea party favorites such as Sen. Mike Lee of Utah and Rep. Steve King of Iowa, as well as conservative intellectual and activist Phyllis Schlafly at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Annual Family Banquet.

SNIP

In the important primary state, Palin spent the first part of her speech blasting the “war on Christmas” by secular society that she argues is stripping all public meaning from the holiday by opposing nativity scenes and other displays.

“Everywhere it seems that faith, religious freedom is under attack,” Palin said.

Those same topics are discussed in a new book Palin wrote called “Good Tidings and Great Joy: Protecting the Heart of Christmas,” a book for which she is currently on a national tour and that she discussed Saturday.

“The war on Christmas is just the tip of the spear in a larger battle,” Palin said, segueing into a discussion of what she sees as big government’s efforts to become a church in its own right.

So Sarah Palin now mounts Bill O’Reilly’s hobbyhorse to sell books and receive speaking fees.

Sarah Palin takes on trade deficits, dog whistles are blown, then CNN puts in a bit of unintentional hilarity:

Palin also had words for the national debt, particularly the $1.3 trillion the U.S. owes China.

“It’s going to be like slavery when that note is due,” Palin said, while noting at the same time that the comparison “isn’t racist”

Like the rest of the event’s speakers, Palins words were deeply rooted in a Christian faith.

Because making slavery comparisons is the Christian thing to do. Did the proofreader have Sunday off?

re: #68 Dark_Falcon

The Bears have lost to the Lions, 21-19. Good play all around by both teams, but Detroit came up on top. This puts the Lions on top of the NFC North, given the imminent loss by Green Bay to Philadelphia, while leaving the Bears and Packers tied for 2nd place.

Packers are going to (probably) drop the next two before Rodgers can return. This is why I’vs said for the last couple of years that the coaching in GB sucks; they rode his arm and did nothing to back it up. Now that he’s injured they’re exposed for the incompetents that they are. Then they lost their backup today too and had to play with a third string QB. Only the fact that the Eagles aren’t very good this year has kept it close.

I’m hoping for Detroit to keep rolling. They’re playing good and it would be nice to see them playing late in January.

It’s not looking good for the Bears either, though Cutler did play through is injury and McCowan scored a late TD drive that almost send the game into overtime. The Bears may still have a wildcard chance, but I think Green Bay is done. My bet has the Packers 3rd in the conference at years end. Lions on top, Bears 2nd, and the Vikings at the bottom.

So my SB prediction is the same as it was some weeks back. I’m thinking Denver versus Seattle. That’d be a neat match up. You’ve got the old in both style and age with Peyton Manning verus the new in the same with Russell Wilson. Could possibly see a rematch of Manning versus Brees too. I don’t count Brady and the Pats out but I just don’t see them as SB caliber.

John McCain says NSA chief Keith Alexander ‘should resign or be fired’

Senator John McCain has called for Keith Alexander to “resign or be fired” as the head of the National Security Agency, in an interview with the German news weekly Der Spiegel published on Sunday.

The senator for Arizona, a former Republican presidential candidate, said Alexander should be held accountable for the leaks of thousands of documents by the whistleblower Edward Snowden, which revealed NSA surveillance and spying on a massive scale. McCain said Snowden, who worked for the NSA as a contractor, should never have had access to classified information.

“And now we have a contractor employee, not a government employee, who has access to information which is, when revealed, most damaging to the standing prestige of the United States and our relations with some of our best friends,” McCain said. “Why did Edward Snowden have that information? And what are we doing as far as screening people who have access to this information? It’s outrageous, and someone ought to be held accountable.”

President Barack Obama, the NSA and the congressional intelligence committee had responsibility for the sharing of classified information, he said.

Asked if Alexander should resign, McCain said: “Of course, he should resign, or be fired. We no longer hold anybody accountable in Washington.”

I baked French Baguettes and Challah using up an entire 5-lb bag of flour.

I’ll put up pictures later when everything is out of the oven.

Weird thing here in my eastern Kentucky county, liquor sales are allowed in the county seat, but their prices are 2-3X higher (and the selection is crap) than in the wet county to the west. Fortunately, both are equidistant for me, so purchases are always made in the wet county, where the Kroger store has a most excellent liquor store.

I have been baking Biscotti lately. About a batch every couple of weeks. They keep well for weeks and are great with your morning coffee.

I use this basic American style Biscotti recipe, (not quite as hard) but I add things like cranberries, almonds, orange zest…whatever you like really.

I also up the flour by one cup and adjust other ingredients and make three “logs” rather than 2.

Here’s another article on this story.

Possible discrepancy in Fairfax absentee votes could affect count in AG race

The Fairfax County Electoral Board is investigating a possible irregularity in the number of absentee ballots cast in Virginia’s largest jurisdiction that Democrats say could shift votes in the still-unresolved race for Virginia attorney general.

As of Thursday evening, state Sen. Mark D. Obenshain (R-Harrisonburg) led state Sen. Mark R. Herring (D-Loudoun) in the contest by 777 votes - or .03 percent of the 2.2 million votes cast — according to the State Board of Elections’ Web site. Local election boards are now counting provisional ballots, cast by people without ID or in the wrong polling place, and canvassing the returns looking for any possible errors. Both campaigns have said they will consider asking for a recount, depending on the results of the review.

One oddity was flagged in Fairfax County by the political team of Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D-Va.).

Looks like this began 2 days ago:

Nearly 2,000 votes in Fairfax possibly uncounted

Fairfax County election officials said Friday that they believe nearly 2,000 votes went uncounted after Tuesday’s elections, a technical error that could affect the outcome of the still unresolved race for Virginia attorney general.

The error stemmed from problems with a broken machine at the county’s Mason district voting center, officials said.

The machine, known as an optical scanner, recorded 723 votes on election night before it broke down, election officials said. Its memory card was then placed in a working machine, which recorded 2,688 votes.

And again:

The possibility of an error in the vote totals was first raised by the political team of Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D-Va.).

Carry on.

Egypt to expand Russia cooperation after fall out with U.S.

Egypt will be expanding cooperation with Russia following a diplomatic fallout with the United States after President Mohammad Mursi’s ouster, Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy said on Saturday.

Russia’s defense and foreign ministers are expected to visit Cairo to discuss arms sales and political relations, Agence France-Presse reported.

Egypt already has a lot of American hardware so they’ll continue to need replacement parts but it’s common sense for them to broaden their choices for the future if the US continues to be an unreliable ally.

And there are no Chick-fil-As in Alaska (what that has to do with Christmas eludes me, but then so does Palin’s appeal).

Palin: (ornament #1) “An angry atheist with a lawyer is one of the most powerful persons in America.”

So, all I need is a lawyer and I’ll be invincible!

I like #4:

“I bet Charles Darwin never understood this: If the world could be described as truly survival-of-the-fittest, why would people collectively be stricken with the spirit of generosity in December?”

Because you’re an idiot with no understanding of Darwin or human psychology.

It has to be the right lawyer.

Johnny Cochram, I think, as passed.

What a huge dick:

The co-founder of frozen yogurt giant Pinkberry was convicted Friday of beating a homeless man with a tire iron while the victim panhandled on the side of an East Hollywood street.

Young Lee, 49, became upset in June 2011 that Daniel Bolding had flashed a tattoo depicting a stick figure of a couple having sex to the people in the car — including Lee’s fiancée. Lee drove away but returned with another man and beat Bolding.

What a huge dick:

I guess, if you own the world (or have the right lawyer) you can do that.

I do applaud her one benefit to society. Think of all the strippers who have been able to make money off of being naughty Palins.

More people need to click on the “Palin Tree”. You don’t even have to listen to her voice; subtitles are provided.

Atheism’s track record makes the Spanish Inquisition seem like Disneyland by comparison.

No, I’d rather not.

5 ruins in a row which do nothing but show me local barbarians? Seriously Civ V?

Does Civ5 retain the bias for discovery by scout/explorer?

Thanks for your service! What do the colors in the ribbon represent?

You’re welcome! It was (and is) a great honor to have served.
The yellow and red stripes are from the South Vietnamese flag. The green stripes represent the jungles of Vietnam.

HBO here is doing a documentary on Easy Company, from Band of Brothers, in about 15 min.

You have to check out the interactive Xmas tree on the NYMag article about Palin’s new holiday screed

nymag.com

I read a transcript of the “teaser” for her audio book over at Amazon.

It was all about how she taught her kids how to be greedy for Christmas.

I am NOT kidding, her words “teaching her kids about greed…”

Yeah…that’s all about the spirit of Baby Jebus..

Poignant and a bit sad. I will never forget those boys being loaded on helicopters in the jungle. Color TV was still pretty new, I remember that vivid color green.

However, there are two Chick-fil-As in Chicago and two more in Chicago’s suburbs. Make of that what you will.

My take is that they go where the people are.

Happy birthday.
