What’s Wrong With Rand Paul’s ‘Audit the Fed’ Bill? Everything.

The libertarian harassment act
LGF • Views: 22,657

It’s clear, then, that many of the proponents of Federal Reserve transparency are simply looking for methods to advance a hard-money agenda even though inflation is dangerously low. Instead of a “transparency act,” Paul’s bill will probably be a “harassment act” in practice.

This interactive series from PEW shows just how well the Fed has been doing lately with it’s two balancing act challenges: keeping unemployment low while keeping inflation down.

Spiritual student passionate about freedom of religion

Lutheran High North’s Janie Leitner is interested in learning more about religion and faith, as evidenced by her taking theology and her plans to minor in Christianity in college. “I would like to see the freedom of religion be reinforced by allowing there to be Creationism taught in public institutions,” Leitner said. […]

Ok, so she’s only 17 and it is possible she will change quite a bit over the next few years, but to utter a sentence like she did suggests to me that she has heard that exact thing several times from some religious programmer.

Bill Lueders column: Gov. Scott Walker’s book is bluntly revealing

He dubs collective bargaining “the enemy of good government” and says he wanted to eliminate public employee unions entirely, but was constrained by his fellow Republicans. He accuses local government officials of succumbing to Stockholm syndrome, willing to betray taxpayers to appease “their captors,” the union bosses, who seek only to maintain the “protection racket” that pours cash into their coffers.

The protesters who flocked to the Capitol, elsewhere praised for general good behavior, are here portrayed as spewing obscenities, spitting on lawmakers and stinking up the joint.

At one point, Walker tells how he cheered his staff by sharing a conservative website’s top 10 list of signs “you might be a member of a public-sector union.” These included: “You get paid twice as much as a private-sector person doing the same job but make up the difference by doing half as much work.” “You know by having a copy of the Holy Koran on your desk your job is 100% safe.” And “You have a Democratic congressman’s lips permanently attached to your butt.”

And, after all this, the governor insists, “we always took the high road and never contributed to the hostility and the rancor.”

[T]he best accountability regime is for Congress to demand certain goals be reached — but then trust the regulators to use their instruments, within the law, to achieve these goals.

If you have ever sat through a Congressional hearing with Chairman Ben Bernanke, you’ll see that Congress usually does the exact opposite. They spend all their time complaining about instruments, about this or that purchase. But lawmakers rarely ask, “Why have you failed to bring about full employment?” Or: “Why are you missing your inflation target?”

Once you factor out the usual economic ignorance, this seems like another bit of evidence in favor of the “post-policy politics” theory. Republicans simply have no goals per se, other than abusing whatever power they can grab and running everything else into the ground.

Their goals are to give lucrative patronage jobs and contracts to teammates, then “work” for the teammates for large salaries after they’ve left government (the large salaries justified by the work they did for the teammates while they were in government).

Do Democrats do this too? Well… Republicans do it first and foremost, it’s their primary motivation. If getting the votes to be able to do this means they also have to pass some theocratic bullshit, that’s part of what it takes to climb the careerist ladder.

When Democrats give patronage jobs and contracts to teammates, it’s only one item on a list of priorities — as evidenced by the fact that their team doesn’t include such a large roster of “think tanks” and “policy institutes” that makes up the wingnut welfare circuit, Democrats’ patronage includes a lot of stuff that’sfor the general public (things like schools and scientific research and libraries and arts programs and national parks and stuff whose value is more difficult to assign a precise $ ROI). Because Democrats like to think of the hoi polloi as the team they want to be associated with.

Treasury Secretaries are a breed unto themselves.

University of Michigan to cut HR and financial services staff in consolidation

The University of Michigan is cutting staff and centralizing its human resources and financial services in an effort to reduce costs.

The idea is to streamline certain functions by offering them in one place —a Shared Services Center.

When it’s at full capacity in October 2014, the center will include 275 employees, doing the jobs of the roughly 325 people who currently tackle human resource and financial service functions throughout the school.

The 325 affected employees aren’t guaranteed a job, but they’ll all be considered for employment in the new center. As U-M put it in an email to employees they “will be invited to become candidates for employment.”

Wisconsin GOP aims to scrap weekend voting

Wisconsin Republicans are pushing a bill to end early voting on the weekend. The measure would make it harder for people in the state’s most populous areas to cast a ballot—and it would hit blacks especially hard.

But state Sen. Glenn Grothman, a Republican who is sponsoring a Senate version of the bill, told msnbc it’s already easy enough to vote.

“Between [early voting], mail absentee, and voting the day of election, you know, I mean anybody who can’t vote with all those options, they’ve really got a problem,” he said. “I really don’t think they care that much about voting in the first place, right?”

This is the same shit Daddy Paul pushed all his career. Now that he’s washed up, the Kid has to take the bullshit over because it’s a libertarian “principal” that’s been pushed for years now.

These new “revolutionaries” (because that’s what they are) want to overturn our representative form of govt and replace it with some kind of anarchistic free-for-all with no restrictions on rogue “capitalism” and the oppression that brings for those unable to get into their “game”.

It’s basically an economic riff on the “survival of the fittest” bullshit pushed by the survivalist types in which might (and plenty of arms) makes “right”.

It’s apparent that Walker has absolutely no filter. I can’t believe he’d let that get published, but as for a scandal, there’ve been a number circling him for the past while, and he seems to be unscathed at the moment.

He also seems to have a special place in the Koch Bros. heart, so he’ll land softly in the fields of wingnut welfare, no doubt, spreading that anti-union bullshit.

It’s just red meat for the persecuted Xians in the crowd. Because what’s the fun in being Xian if you can’t feel like you’re being persecuted all the time? If you’re going to believe you’re superior to everyone else, shouldn’t you also get to feel like you have to suffer unfairly for it? At least in this world? re: #12 Amory Blaine

Wisconsin’s GOP Gov. Wrecker Walker, is also taking a battle axe to Medicaid, in claiming that he’s improving access to medical insurance.

It’s an odd way to do it.

Walker’s plan will open up Medicaid in Wisconsin to about 83,000 poor, childless adults starting Jan.1, 2014. They were previously locked out because of a cap on the number of people who could be in the program.

At the same time, Walker announced that the state is canceling Medicaid coverage for 77,000 people who have incomes above the poverty line.

Walker’s maneuver is possible because the state’s Medicaid program was already one of the more inclusive ones in the country. It allowed people making up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level to be covered by BadgerCare.

Now the governor wants to roll BadgerCare eligibility back to 100 percent of the poverty line, and put everyone making between 100 percent and 200 percent - a range of $11,490 to $22,980 for a single person - into private subsidized coverage that they buy on the new marketplace.

Walker says everyone losing coverage will be able to buy subsidized plans under the Affordable Care Act, and many will find monthly premiums under $20.

“You’re going to hear some detractors claim that moving people to the private market or to the exchanges isn’t affordable,” Walker said in February. But he maintains that these critics aren’t aware of how much the subsidies will bring down the cost of coverage.

Jessica Jaglowski is a stay-at-home mom in Milwaukee who recently got a letter from the state saying she would be dropped from Medicaid. Her husband will be able to get coverage through his job, and their kids can stay on Medicaid. So Jaglowski the only one who will need to seek new insurance.

What’s he doing? He’s rolling back the state’s Medicaid coverage (which is slightly more generous than the average state), and simultaneously claims that the people displaced will get exchange coverage for less cost to the state.

The kicker? This plan will actually cost Wisconsin taxpayers $460 million more than if he accepted the federal money and expansion. Yeah, that’s fiscal responsibility alright. His response is that this is only a short term cost, but doesn’t have the numbers to back that up, especially since it would take at least a decade to even come close to breaking even (the $460 million hit is through 2020). Taxpayers will have to make up the difference and that means cuts from elsewhere in the budget since the state (like every other state) has a requirement for a balanced budget. So, unless there’s smoke and mirrors, Walker’s once again gutting the safety net and screwing with the public’s health.

After the E-service rejected allegations in Dagbladet, came [Norwegian Prime Minister] Erna Solberg with new statements:

* The article in Dagbladet is wrong. We are talking about 33 million calls that Norway and Norwegian intelligence has registered in Afghanistan, not in Norway. We have now gone through this, and this is confirmed, said Solberg said.

* The Prime Minister stressed that intelligence operations done as part of efforts to ensure the safety of Norwegian soldiers in Afghanistan.

* This is a completely legitimate part of what we do to ensure participation outside and prevent terrorist attacks and something we’re working with the Americans, said Solberg.

* Now I think we should all calm down a little. Now we must first sort out the facts in this case, said Erna Solberg.

re: #3 blueraven

Just what we need; Congress involved in monetary policy. What could go wrong?

In recent years, Republicans in Congress have “accomplished” a lot, in regard to pulling funds out of the economy. The sequester, the failure to extend Social Security tax cuts, and of course the recent shutdown. We can speculate about WHY they did this; is it in part due to a desire to undermine the economy, because you-know-who is President? But the effects have been to slow economic growth.

Throughout all this, the Federal Reserve has worked hard to have the OPPOSITE effect of Congress, by stimulating the economy by purchasing bonds.

So now, Congress wants to control the Fed? Think about that. They’re almost coming right out and saying it: “The next time we undermine the economy, we want to be able to cripple the Federal Reserve’s ability to compensate for our actions.”

As “paranoid” as the above sounds, does anyone really doubt that right now, the Federal Reserve has serious, detailed plans for whatever Congress may do during the next possible “shutdown showdown”, this coming January and February? Right now, we need an independent Federal Reserve more than ever.

Once again, the Syrian civil war spills over into Lebanon. This time, it was a series of bombings targeting Shi’ite neighborhoods. 23 were killed, including an Iranian diplomat.

An al-Qaeda linked group claimed responsibility and threatened more attacks against Iranian interests in Lebanon because Iran continues to back Hizbullah and Syria’s Assad.

In a series of posts on Twitter, an Al Qaeda-linked faction known as the Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s twin blasts outside the embassy.

The group, based in Lebanon, described the incident as a double-suicide attack and demanded the release of prisoners from Lebanese jails and the withdrawal of Hezbollah, the Lebanese-based political and military organization, from Syria.

More details on the attacks, which were a coordinated pair of suicide bombings involving vehicles:

A Lebanese security official said the first suicide attacker was on a motorcycle that carried two kilograms (4.4 pounds) of explosives. He blew himself up at the large black main gate of the Iranian mission, damaging the three-story facility, the official said.

Less than two minutes later, a second suicide attacker driving a car rigged with 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of explosives struck about 10 meters (yards) away, the official said. He spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Shiite Iran has long played a central role in Syria as the main Mideast backer of President Bashar Assad’s government, and Lebanon’s Hezbollah fighters have aided Assad’s forces in battling the largely Sunni rebels seeking to topple him. Sunni Gulf Arab powers Saudi Arabia and Qatar are chief backers of the insurgency in Syria.

Iranian Ambassador Ghazanfar Roknabadi identified the dead diplomat as Sheik Ibrahim Ansari. Speaking to Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV from inside the embassy compound, he said Ansari took his post in Lebanon a month ago and was overseeing all regional cultural activities. Al-Manar reported that the street targeted by the suicide bombers includes a building where some of the Iranian diplomats and their families live.

Of course, pro-Iranian/Syrians found someone else to blame:

An unidentified Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman blamed Israel for the attacks while Hezbollah and Syrian officials indirectly blamed Saudi Arabia.

It really doesn’t make sense for Israel to involve itself in this way; Israel has attacked Assad and Hizbullah forces, particularly when they’re transferring weapons systems into Hizbullah hands, but they’re not going to carry out bombings in this fashion. They have nothing to gain from this kind of attack; the Saudis do have more to gain, though, considering that they’re trying to expand their influence in the region and consider it their mission to limit Iranian influence. Still, the most likely culprit is one of the al Qaeda factions fighting against Assad that decided to go after Assad’s backers in Lebanon.

Scott Walker To GOP: If You Want To Beat Hillary, Nominate A Governor

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) believes there’s only one way to beat former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton if she decides to run for president: by nominating a governor to head the 2016 GOP ticket.

“I think if we’re going to take on Hillary Clinton in the next election, we need somebody who’s as far removed from Washington,” Walker said at an event in New York City, as quoted by Capital New York. “Because Hillary Clinton wasn’t just secretary of state, wasn’t just a U.S. senator, wasn’t just the first lady. She’s been a product of Washington for decades.”

“And we need to have the most compelling message, and if we’re going to beat somebody like Hillary Clinton, we’ve got to have somebody from outside of Washington, who’s got a proven record of reform,” he continued. “And frankly, to me, that could be any one of the 30 Republican governors.”

The remark echoes comments Walker made Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” where he said that both nominees to the GOP ticket should be former or current governors. When asked about Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) chances of ending up at the White House, Walker praised the congressman while simultaneously denying that he would be the best presidential nominee.

Walker clarified Monday that he “didn’t vote people off” and framed the answer he gave to “This Week” as a response to an assumed Clinton candidacy. But as Capital New York points out, Walker’s prescription for the GOP’s electoral ailments closely resembles himself — and he did not refute questions aimed at his own presidential aspirations.

Gee, ya think?

“I’m embarrassed,” Ford said. “Not just myself, my family, my friends, my supporters, the whole city. I take full responsibility for that. We’ve all made mistakes. I’m not perfect. Maybe you are, maybe other people are, (but) I’ve made mistakes. I admitted to my mistakes.”

Matt Lauer asked Ford a crucial question: Are you fit to lead a major city in case of emergency?

But of the last 4 candidates nominated, only George W. Bush actually won the election. And the fact that so many insiders have failed is part of Walker’s point, as is how Bush won. George W. won elections in part because he was able to connect with the public in 2000 and 2004. The other three candidates failed to do that.

So the part of Scott Walker’s argument that says “Failure to connect with the people is political death” is correct. And you’ll also note that Republicans nominating a governor would mean their nominee would not be Ted Cruz.

Deeds and his first wife divorced in 2010. The Washington Post reported at the time that the marriage was “a casualty of a nearly 20-year pursuit of a lifelong ambition that kept him away from home.”

Deeds married Siobhan Gilbride Lomax of Lexington in June 2012.

Gus Deeds was charged with underage alcohol possession in 2009. The case was dismissed, according to court records in Bath County.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” Del. David J. Toscano, D-Charlottesville, said in a statement.

“Senator Deeds was very close to his son Gus, and has taken herculean efforts to help him over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with Creigh and the family at this difficult time.”

I like how “George Washington” is next to a portrait of Thomas Jefferson. Those two weren’t exactly ideologically on the same spectrum. I love how they need to bring all these clowns dressed up in colonial era garb to “show” that the Founders would be on their side when in reality most people see a guy who didn’t know that Halloween was last month.

Before Obama won (and won reelection), a sitting US senator hadn’t won the White House since JFK. It’s possible that a Senator could again win, meaning someone like Cruz has a chance, but people may be more likely to vote for someone with executive branch experience. That means Walker’s putting himself up against Christie and undercutting the argument for Cruz, Rubio and other GOP pretenders from Congress.

re: #117 Dark_Falcon

But of the last 4 candidates nominated, only George W. Bush actually won the election. And the fact that so many insiders have failed is part of Walker’s point, as is how Bush won. George W. won elections in part because he was able to connect with the public in 2000 and 2004. The other three candidates failed to do that.

…Sorta…

And if Walker wants to run for president I say let him, the guy is a hayseed, he’s simply *not* a national politician, there’s no way. Also, the scrutiny on the (ongoing) investigations that such attention will bring will help us in Wisconsin. Couldn’t hurt Mary Burke’s (@Burke4WI) chances either.

Fair point. I just think simplifying it to “Run a governor” is dumb.

To be fair to Gov. Walker, he did elaborate on the point and do remember that TPM is giving us a condensed version of his remarks from his speech in New York and his appearance on “This Week”. There is a good deal of elaboration from both occasions that TPM did not put on the article. They did include the links, so we can see what he said in somewhat greater detail.

Fair enough to him then. It’s understandable why they’d run a governor. As just pointed out, Obama was the first sitting senator to win since JFK.

Personally, sounds to me like the plot of a Lifetime movie of the week, where the raging asshole keeps avoiding justice because those around him who aren’t making excuses for his behavior are too afraid of him to press charges.

I was riffing on FTL (faster than light) and the teflon coating of one James T. Kirk, who can break every Starfleet rule and regulation, yet still keep his job.

Though a Lifetime movie plot works, too.

Sarah Palin’s New Book Is The ‘Pinnacle Of Western Civilization,’ Says Amazon Reviewer

Finally after millennia of trying to get to the crux of our human condition, a mind of ultimate wisdom powered by a voice of persuasive eloquence brings us the single greatest work to come out of the Western tradition. When you were sleep-walking through school and wondering what was the point of all those hard books — why read Aristotle, why read Sartre, why read Shakespeare? Well, here is the answer. All of those lesser lights were preparing us for this. My only regret is that I have now experienced the highest point of my intellectual life without having prepared myself adequately for it. I will need to revisit the entire Western canon and re-read and re-imagine each classic in light of this truly greatest of classics. What the name “Einstein” meant for the 20th Century as an icon for ultimate intelligence, the name “Palin” will mean for this and for every succeeding century as the ultimate in human achievement. I thank God that I walk the earth in the same era as this greatest of the great. The Palin Era is upon us.”

If you choose to protect yourself and your family at home, that is your decision.

But if you think that a gun in a public place is going to help protect others, then God help us unless you fully trained, expeienced, have nerves of steel and excellent situational awareness, or you have just compounded the problem.

And that is not a skills set you can purchase at the sporting goods counter of the local Wal-Mart.

My personal favorites are the ads. Particularly the “seed vault” full of organic seeds. Said seed vaults being a green plastic container with a snap on lid.

Anyone who gardens can tell you that unless you have REALLY precisely controlled storage, with proper temps, humidity and containers, seeds are not very viable after maybe a year or two in storage. Each year that passes gives you a lower germination rate even with the best of storage conditions. The doofuses buying these things and stashing them in their basements or garages are going to be in for quite a surprise when Doomsday comes and they get a couple of tomato plants and a squash or two out of a few hundred seeds should they decide The End is Near and try to grow some food.

But if you think that a gun in a public place is going to help protect others, then God help us unless you fully trained, expeienced, have nerves of steel and excellent situational awareness, or you have just compounded the problem.

And that is not a skills set you can purchase at the sporting goods counter of the local Wal-Mart.

WTFITS? This is outrageously speculative “reporting”. How did NBC get these documents and from whom?

Endless Afghanistan? US-Afghan agreement would keep troops in place and funds flowing, perhaps indefinitely

worldnews.nbcnews.com

KABUL - While many Americans have been led to believe the war in Afghanistan will soon be over, a draft of a key US-Afghan security deal obtained by NBC NEWS shows the United States is prepared to maintain military outposts in Afghanistan for many years to come, and pay to support hundreds of thousands of Afghan security forces.

“The wide-ranging document, still unsigned by the United States and Afghanistan, has the potential to commit thousands of American troops to Afghanistan and spend billions of US taxpayer dollars.

(snip)

“The copy of the draft is dated July 25, 2013. As a working draft, it is particularly revealing because it shows the back and forth negotiations, as US and Afghan officials added words and struck out paragraphs. The changes are marked by annotations still revealed in the text. The document is a work in progress. US officials say there have been more changes since July. The draft, however, does indicate the scope of this possible agreement with major implications for Washington, Kabul, US troops and the continuation of America’s longest war.”

I thought this was going to be a short-term occupation for training Afghan security purposes, not a “war”. I’m all for cutting them loose—it’s a terrible drain on the economy and who does it benefit? We didn’t learn a thing from the Soviet Union’s experience with Afghanistan.

There are multiple versions of the GA floating around, apparently the original did not include “Under G-D” that was added in later, just like the Pledge of Allegiance.

Just for reference, here’s a link to the copy kept in the archives. The copy was hand written by Lincoln.

There are actually five known copies still existent. Like the one in the link, none of them contain the phrase “under God”.

Just for reference, here’s a link to the copy kept in the archives. The copy was hand written by Lincoln.

There are actually five known copies still existent. Like the one in the link, none of them contain the phrase “under God”.

Wikipedia article pretty much presents mixed evidence on whether he uttered the phrase or not:

Usage of “under God”

The words “under God” do not appear in the Nicolay and Hay drafts but are included in the three later copies (Everett, Bancroft, and Bliss). Accordingly, some skeptics maintain that Lincoln did not utter the words “under God” at Gettysburg. However, at least three reporters telegraphed the text of Lincoln’s speech on the day the Address was given with the words “under God” included. Historian William E. Barton argues that:

Every stenographic report, good, bad and indifferent, says ‘that the nation shall, under God, have a new birth of freedom.’ There was no common source from which all the reporters could have obtained those words but from Lincoln’s own lips at the time of delivery. It will not do to say that [Secretary of War] Stanton suggested those words after Lincoln’s return to Washington, for the words were telegraphed by at least three reporters on the afternoon of the delivery.

The reporters present included Joseph Gilbert, from the Associated Press; Charles Hale, from the Boston Advertiser; John R. Young (who later became the Librarian of Congress), from the Philadelphia Press; and reporters from the Cincinnati Commercial, New York Tribune, and New York Times. Charles Hale “had notebook and pencil in hand, [and] took down the slow-spoken words of the President”. “He took down what he declared was the exact language of Lincoln’s address, and his declaration was as good as the oath of a court stenographer. His associates confirmed his testimony, which was received, as it deserved to be, at its face value.” One explanation is that Lincoln deviated from his prepared text and inserted the phrase when he spoke. Ronald C. White, visiting professor of history at the University of California - Los Angeles and professor of American religious history emeritus at the San Francisco Theological Seminary, wrote in this context of Lincoln’s insertion and usage of “Under God”:

It was an uncharacteristically spontaneous revision for a speaker who did not trust extemporaneous speech. Lincoln had added impromptu words in several earlier speeches, but always offered a subsequent apology for the change. In this instance, he did not. And Lincoln included “under God” in all three copies of the address he prepared at later dates. “Under God” pointed backward and forward: back to “this nation,” which drew its breath from both political and religious sources, but also forward to a “new birth.” Lincoln had come to see the Civil War as a ritual of purification. The old Union had to die. The old man had to die. Death became a transition to a new Union and a new humanity.

Whenever I hear a (straight, male) person use this phrase I wonder what sort of gay panic they must live their lives in to equate whatever they are equating with being orally raped (because that is what they’re doing).

The graphic’s misprinted though. He’s not allowed to travel outside of FL, and must stay at least 1500 ft away from her residence.
