WASHINGTON — Rep. Trey Radel, R-Fla., pleaded guilty Wednesday to possession of cocaine and was sentenced to one year of supervised probation.

“I’ve hit a bottom where I realize I need help. And I have aggressively pursued that help,” Radel said, as he admitted in District of Columbia Superior Court that he purchased 3.5 grams of cocaine.

More: Rep. Trey Radel Pleads Guilty to Cocaine Charge

I will say this for him, it’s probably the best handling of a situation like this that I’ve seen. No weaseling, no “the B# set up me”, just admitting that he has a problem, take a plea, and then move on.

Radel was caught buying drugs Oct. 29 from an undercover police officer, according to a statement filed in court by prosecutors and signed by him. The statement explains that agents investigating cocaine trafficking in Washington learned from an informant that Radel “had on several occasions purchased, possessed, and used cocaine.” After he was caught, Radel invited federal agents to his apartment where he turned over a vial of cocaine he had there.

This is a guy with a serious problem, and having fought my own inner demons I can only wish him the best. From what I’ve read at other sources, his behavior wasn’t unknown to both the authorities and the press had gotten wind of it also. It was only going to be a matter of time before it broke one way or another.

As an aside, he represents the part of Florida that my dad has moved to. Love my Pops, 85 years old, still checking out the ladies, and more liberal than I am. I’m just afraid that he’s going to get mixed up with some young 65 Y/O hussy and spend all my inheritance :)

One year of supervised probation.

I wonder what kind of sentence a typical non-white, non-privileged cocaine user might expect under our crazy drug laws.

Thank goodness he wasn’t caught with 3.5 grams of CRACK.

This is such bullshit. Not only for what Charles mentioned, but the pure hypocrisy for him wanting people drug tested for welfare and/or food stamps. He should be dumped just for being a two faced asswipe because you know damn well he was using when he made some of those statements. He doesn’t deserve to get off so easy politically and the Republicans should do something about it. But, they won’t.

An official request for an ethics committee investigation of Weiner was made (by his party’s majority leader, Pelosi) the day after he admitted to the crotch shot (after a week of denial). Less than ten days later he announced his intent to resign, and two weeks after that he was an ex-congressman.

Boehner implied he has no intention of doing the same to Radel.

IOKIYAR.

A Democrat would probably survive this, too. On the scale of Congressional misbehavior snorting cocaine is fairly low. A congressman is at greater risk of losing his seat if he cheats on his wife and gets caught, frankly.

It also that unlike Mayor Ford, congressman Radel admitted to the wrongdoing he had done with a minimum of fuss, helped along by the fact that his initial arrest did not make the news. Thus any scandal died before it could get going.

Asshole who like to rape old ladies gets wasted by a woman he victimized:

A woman shot and killed a man early Thursday morning after he forced his way into her Kansas City home and sexually assaulted her.

The woman heard a knock at her door and when she went to answer it a young man asked for a person who did not live there. Apparently the woman told him that he had the wrong house, but he then forced his way inside, the Kansas City Star reports.

Once inside, the man, who was later identified as 24-year-old Paul J. Williams, forced the woman to her bedroom and sexually assaulted her.

Following the assault, Williams went towards the kitchen and that’s when the woman, who is in her late 60s but has not been identified by name, grabbed her revolver.

According to the woman, Williams started to come towards her again, so she shot him once and he immediately collapsed. A neighbor heard the gunshot then saw the woman walk out of her home, asking for help.

Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish.

What does it say that Congresspeople doing drugs is less problematic than cheating on their wives?

I can tell you which one *I* would be more concerned about having a real, tangible impact on their ability to do the job.

Way OT, and probably inconsequential to most of Lizardom, but I have to share a couple of my tweets about Lindsey Vonn, who’s comeback to big-time downhill ski racing is in jeopardy after a crash yesterday while training.

Ms. Kildow (that’s her maiden name, she won’t shed her ex-husband’s surname because “Vonn” sounds more marketable) has turned into quite the media whore in the last couple of years, and the whole Tiger thing has exacerbated that. As proof of her completely selling out, here’s the one tweet she sent out today to all her well-wishers on Twitter.

Instead of directly addressing the skiing community (which came out in overwhelming support for her on Twitter) she addresses a person who could increase her profile. I’ve lost a lot of respect for the woman. I used to think she was so rad as a skier.

I wish her well, and hope she can recover and ski again. I don’t really feel sorry for her. Frankly, I don’t think her head is in the game like it used to be ever since she crashed hard last February and started dating a serial philanderer.

I don’t know if I’m getting my point across terribly well but I guess what I’m trying to say is that for all the stupid shit she may or may not do, criticizing her decision to keep the name and disrespecting that by calling her by what you think her name should be…

She doesn’t. She wants to give a speech, and nobody gives speeches here. Okay? So she doesn’t come on. We invited her on tonight. You’re here instead. But I don’t begrudge Sarah Palin that. She can come on. She doesn’t come on, she does come on, whatever she wants to do. Okay? Fine.

In this Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013 photo released by Japan Coast Guard, smoke billows from a new island off the coast of Nishinoshima, seen left above, a small, uninhabited island in the Ogasawara chain, far south of Tokyo. The Japan Coast Guard and earthquake experts said a volcanic eruption has raised the new island in the seas to the far south of Tokyo.

He should resign. Period. I would say this if he were a Democrat. He clearly needs to take the time to deal with his own problems and the distraction of Congress will not help during that time.

I’m inclined to agree though, like others, I would eventually excuse him if he straightens out and changes his stance wrt the War on Drugs Underprivileged Drug Users.

He should definitely resign, or be recalled, if he drinks or uses again.

(Wilbur Mills, the head of the House Ways and Means Committee, resigned after he was caught cheating on his wife and drunk. My impression is that he gradually recovered his reputation within the Beltway by being a resource for government types with alcohol problems.)

If I may add to my own comment, this whole thing really kind of mirrors what Hunter S. Thompson wrote about in his 1970 essay “The Temptations of Jean-Claude Killy.”

From Wikipedia:

Through it all, Killy’s focus on his own enormous profit is a source of worry to Thompson. The trend he sees developing is one of larger-than-life stars—athletes of the highest physical standards who have achieved feats unimaginable by normal people—demeaning themselves and their accomplishments by agreeing to shill for a few extra dollars. An enormous sports fan himself, Thompson is distraught by this turn of events and wonders that Killy was never quite sure “why I was embarrassed for him in those scenes.”

nice to know that IOKIYAR is still in effect, and DF, in general Republican office holders don’t pay the penalty for their misdeeds. The last one I can remember acting honorably after getting caught, I believe was Rep Lee, out of NY who got busted trolling for pussy online. Ensign, they had to threaten to expel him from the Senate for his misdeeds before he resigned (although his bagman Coburn remained unscathed, sanctimonious prick he remains).

High profile Dems who get nailed, Weiner, who’s transgression was a selfie and some braggadocio, resigned, Spitzer, resigned, Edwards, shamed out of public life.

Vitter, another family values man, re-elected (nothing like a hypocritical slut shaming family values Republican), Sanford, elected to a federal office after using taxpayer dollars and time to visit his mistress on another fucking continent.

So the next time you want to trot out “generally” speaking about the morals and ethical values of Republican office holders, look at who speaks for them over the airwaves, look at the legislation that they pass to take money and food away from the poor and look at the behavior while they’re in office, with scandal after scandal and who they cater to and who they screw over and just stop yourself next time.

Way OT, and probably inconsequential to most of Lizardom, but I have to share a couple of my tweets about Lindsey Vonn, who’s comeback to big-time downhill ski racing is in jeopardy after a crash yesterday while training.

[Embedded content]

Instead of directly addressing the skiing community (which came out in overwhelming support for her on Twitter) she addresses a person who could increase her profile. I’ve lost a lot of respect for the woman. I used to think she was so rad as a skier.

I wish her well, and hope she can recover and ski again. I don’t really feel sorry for her. Frankly, I don’t think her head is in the game like it used to be ever since she crashed hard last February and started dating a serial philanderer.

Then again, she might know him personally. Why are you so front-loaded to take offense? Because she is dating Tiger Woods? Really?

I generally mistrust blog stalkers, and this post seems to be indicative of an individual who has an agenda. Is this really important in the grand scheme of things? Is it an appropriate post on this Board?

I also find her romance with Tiger sort of skeezy, in that she looks like a clone of his ex-wife. (all of Lance Armstrong’s romances are similarly skeezy — it’s like he had a sketch artist draw up the girl he wanted, then went looking for her… and found her five times.)

I’d be uncomfortable dating a man who I thought chose me for how much I remind him of The One That Got Away.

101 FemNaziBitch  Wed, Nov 20, 2013 11:30:15pm

AS usual, I haven’t been paying attention to subjects outside my specific area of concern. WTF is this?

This means that Fast Track, which first began under Nixon in 1974, was not only a usurpation of the U.S. Congress’ constitutional authority “to regulate commerce with foreign nations (Article I-8).” It also gave the executive branch — which is generally much less accountable to public pressure than is the Congress — a means of negating and pre-empting important legislation by our elected representatives. Laws to protect the environment, food safety, consumers (from monopoly pricing), and other public interest concerns can now be traded away in “trade” negotiations. And U.S. law must be made to conform to the treaty.

How ironic that this massive transfer of power to special-interests such as our giant pharmaceutical or financial corporations has been sold to the press as a means of holding “special interest” groups — who might oppose tariff reductions that harm them but are good for everyone else — in check.

But the TPP and its promoters are full to the brim with ironies. It is quite amazing a treaty like the TPP can still be promoted as a “free trade” agreement when its most economically important provisions are the exact opposite of “free trade” — the expansion of protectionism.

If you go out and spend $68 for a t-shirt, think about who is getting rich from this kind of activity. Just because it was made in China doesn’t make it any better, either. China pays approximately 8 times the wages in Bangladesh, but inflation has eroded workers buying power. Here’s an interesting article with charts showing wages in China and many other Asian countries.

It is not just wages, it is the fact that they can compete on lax environmental and safety regulations. We are not doing anyone a favor by allowing them to compete on this basis, pricing our own workers out of a job and providing those nations no incentive for cleaning up their act.

Of course. Still, it is our own appetites (as the subject of the post shows) that drives this kind of market.

But volume can’t replace quality. I’m old enough to remember when clothes, shoes, etc. would last, were made from quality material and well constructed. I learned to sew as a teen and was an excellent tailor—made most of the clothes I wore to work and even sewed for others when I had time.

Now, “fashion” tends to control all of it. Ironically, hippies took the dungarees poor kids like me wore and dressed in protest against their parents’ increasingly affluent and corporate lifestyles. Then “jeans” became fodder for “designers” (some of whom actually rip and practically destroy them) and the iconic uniform we see today on just about everyone for casual wear. The same for the lowly tee shirt which was considered underwear back in the day, not an advertising medium.

I know I sound like an “old fogie” but really, when you look at some of the clothes around and how much they cost, it does make you wonder why people don’t dress better. It’s because “fashion” and money, not style, rules these days. Someone tells teens to wear ripped jeans and they follow like lemmings. Put someone in a nice outfit and they get laughed at. Go figure—rebellion gone corporate, I suppose, but when you see older people in the same clothes, it does beg the question.

No. But the trends in jeans are recognizeable in the population before a designer comes up with it. It was random kids who came up with acid-washing, with distressing, with super-tightness, etc. Fashion designers (mostly) just copy what they see being created on the street. That’s 1100-1200 yuan per month, somewhat below $200/month. COL here is also lower, but housing prices in the big cities are a bit out of reach for most workers, about 6000 yuan per square meter ($90 a square foot).

Guangdong is the wage powerhouse, not surprising considering it’s been the gateway to the outside world for almost two centuries. But the COL there is proportionately higher than in Hunan.

To make a long story short, a minimum wage worker in China can’t buy an house (actually an apartment) any more than a McD’s or Walmart worker in the USA can.

The media love crime stories, and they sensationalize them to sell their product. Widespread reporting about what is really going on would hurt sales, so it isn’t going to be done. And its not just the bosses, either: Reporters want to report that which will keep them employed and get them attention.

It depends on how it plays out and who is supporting you. Congressman Lee was a relative moderate from New York so when he got caught being sleezy online, John Boehner was able to simply chuck him out swiftly. Trey Radel, by contrast, has significant Tea Party support and Boehner doesn’t want another confrontation with those people right now. It’s a bit more than that IMO. It makes people afraid of each other and less trusting. That erodes whole communities. I know this, I’ve watched it happen in my own community. In 15 yrs, this place has changed, A LOT. People used to do stuff like potluck suppers at the library. The practice was stopped because of concerns of some horrible person(aka someone”new”) would bring poisoned food. I tried to bring the practice back and was told that it’s not allowed anymore in public buildings. Because people are scared shitless of one another, and the news and other factors are directly responsible for that. So who profits from that fear? Gun makers and dealers, megachurches (it’s not a coincidence that three of them have been built within 5 miles of my house in the last decade, along with a HUGE Christian K-12 school that costs 25K a yr to send a kid to), home security companies, etc.

We’ve become isolated from one another to an unhealthy degree. If we ever got over that and joined together over the REAL dangers to ourselves and families, the powerful would shit themselves in fear daily. They are not scared of us, we’re too scared of each other to be a threat to them.

George Zimmerman’s girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, has refused to appear on camera until she gets a paid national interview, WKMG-Channel 6 reported Wednesday night.

WKMG’s Erik Sandoval broke the story of Scheibe’s personal details about her relationship with Zimmerman in a report at 11 p.m. Tuesday.

“I did actually speak to her at noon today after our story aired last night at 11,” Sandoval said at 6 p.m. Wednesday. “She wants to make it absolutely clear. She says that she and her daughter did not set Zimmerman up for what happened on Monday at her home in Apopka.”

George Zimmerman left the Seminole County jail after posting bond on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013. (Video provided by FOX35)

Sheibe said it was coincidental that she was seeking a national interview and that on Monday she claimed he pointed a gun at her. He has been charged with aggravated assault, domestic-violence battery and criminal mischief in the incident.

Zimmerman’s attorney had no response to the WKMG story yet, Sandoval said.

It was pretty chilly out here on LI last night - I went out for a smoke about 10:00 and it was hovering around 25 degrees.

I’m no big fan of cold, but I’ve learned to put up with it over the years.

re: #195 A Mom Anon

You really nailed that. It’s why I basically like living here in this small apt complex. Everyone for the most part gets along well, and we talk to each other. Not a lot of socializing since almost everyone works or goes to school, less than half of us have kids, but we’ve never had any trouble here and it’s safe.

NO ONE WAS COOKING THERE. A potluck means you bring a prepared dish. The memo I was shown said for “security reasons” not health concerns. This happened in Dec of 2001, right before Christmas. There was NEVER a health permit needed or posted in that meeting room because that’s not the law. There’s a sink, fridge and microwave in that room, it’s not a full kitchen.

But it’s nice how you know what’s happening in my community and can insinuate I’m either an idiot or a liar.

It happens. I’ve gotten aggressive when FB acquaintances get seriously mental. I’ve mentioned some of these before:

1) My long-time friend who claims to be independent but votes GOP and hates Obama quit FB when I pushed back on his complaint that Obama was forcing his morality on people by passing the ACA.

Let that sink in for a minute. Wanting people to have access to medical treatment is somehow questionable, morally.

2) I eventually cut a rabid, walking stereotype neocon (full on Benghazi nut) who posted a cartoon of Obama admitting he knowingly worked with Al Queda. I commented on that post that anyone who believed that was a fucking idiot.

He wrote a general response that foul language on his feed would not be tolerated, as his kids read it. His children seeing him falsely accuse Obama of working with terrorists? No big deal. But heaven forfend if they see a naughty word.

3) I just dumped a guy who is essentially a Blue Dog Dem. Disagreed with me about remarks I made blaming the GOP for the shutdown, by telling me to get my dickhead out of my ass.

I said stop calling me a dickhead or else. He insisted that he didn’t, as saying someone has a dickhead up their ass is completely different. He also once told me UFO sightings are human time travelers from a distant century, so there’s that.

Still wonder why I use that service at times. Never a dull moment, that’s for sure. I’m just waiting for the day when people actually see “atheist” under my religious affiliation. It’ll be digital tumbleweeds then, LOL.

VT220’s definitely kicked ass for everyone who had been using a VT100.

Don’t get me started on the PDP’s and their paper output terminals. And their keyboard where you had to mash each key with BOTH HANDS, that’s how stiff they were.

I think the developers of Unix worked on a PDP keyboard and that’s why the commands are so short and cryptic, because mashing the keys required a lot of muscle.

Letting it slide can certainly by called hypocritical, but Boehner can survive that kind of hypocrisy.

Sure he can. He’s made a career out of it due to the people that excuse it because he’s a Republican. The party of no continues to play games and America is getting real tired of it.

It was most likely directly related to 9/11 and it was a decision made by the Library System. We accepted it at the time because that had just happened. Mind you, it was not a problem EVER before that. This particular group had been meeting for close to a decade without any issue.

But no, there’s more to the story. I just don’t like being told that what I was directly involved in wasn’t the whole story. I should go cool off, maybe I can return with something more valid to discuss.

Indonesians burn Australian flags over spying reports

reuters.com

“About 200 people marched to the heavily fortified Australian embassy in Jakarta - the scene of a 2004 bombing that killed 10 people - to demand an apology over the alleged spying, which prompted Yudhoyono to downgrade diplomatic relations with Canberra on Wednesday.

“Many of the protesters carried banners lambasting their southern neighbor, including one saying, “We are ready for war with Australia”.

(snip)

“Australia earlier updated its travel advisory for Indonesia, the country’s second-most popular tourist destination after New Zealand, urging citizens in the Southeast Asian archipelago to avoid protests and “maintain high levels of vigilance”.

I’m already not having a good time at this time of year. He’s telling me that what I directly experienced was just not the whole story. It WAS.

If the discussion is with Capt. Punctuation, don’t bother. You’ll just give yourself an ulcer. Still not sure what that one brings to any conversation.

House To Vote On Bill That Would Impose $5,000 Fee For Protesting Drilling Projects

The bill, introduced by Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-CO), is broad legislation designed to make it much easier for oil and gas companies to obtain permission to drill on public lands. If signed into law, the legislation would automatically approve onshore drilling permits if the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) failed to act on them in 60 days.

If an individual does not like a proposed drilling project and wanted to oppose it, he or she would have to pay a $5,000 fee to file an official protest.

Did any PDP’s survive Y2K? The PDP’s that I worked with only had a 2-digit year field in the OS. We joked that if we did not get a replacement for the PDP’s, we would set the year back to 1972 or 1976 which I think had the same day-of-week as Y2K.

I only interacted with PDP-10s while at college. They used them as support processors to a DEC-10 system. In a work environment it was VAX (3100?) and MicroVAX machines running VAX/VMS in some version or another.

Cut my teeth on relational databases using Rdb 1.2 or so. Eventually up to 3.0 and then at one point coding Rdb and SQL at the same time, which could be annoying since there were syntax differences for doing the same thing.

Heh. I remember when we replaced everybody’s VT terminal with a “brand new” (Windows NT) PC.

Got a bunch of panicked calls from users who said I CAN’T TURN OFF MY COMPUTER!

Because they went through the shutdown procedure from the START menu, got to the screen that said “IT IS NOW OK TO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER” and then turned off the monitor.

I still look back fondly on my first ‘big’ power machine…and 286 DX with DOS and the very first Windows with a full 8mb of RAM and a full 385 mb hard drive! I think it was close to $4,000 and we thought that was hot stuff. Now a Smart Phone would kill it.

Now there is a movie reference I haven’t come across in a while. Amazing how spot-on that flick was and how it’s message is really timeless.

I remember getting in some debates with some folks that thought it was one of the worst movies ever, yet they couldn’t manage to form a real criticism. I guess it came down to two things. 1. Movies are supposed to be all about fun and feeling good even if there is some tear-jerking. 2. Movies fail when they try to make big social statements in such dark ways…or something.

I know a bunch of people who can’t stand Kubrick. I think a lot of it sources to them not wanting movies to challenge them to think (movie watching is pure brain candy to them) and that Kubrick did not do feel-good endings that returned to status quo.

Well, I’m talking reality here, not wishful thinking.

Do you really think that paying people minimum wages makes a CEO worth tens of millions in annual pay? If you do, you’re part of the problem.

You know, when I was younger and wanting to get into advertising as an artist I thought how cool would it be to make the big bucks. Then in the summer between my junior and senior years at art school I got to freelance at a fairly well known ad agency here in Columbus. Once I got to meet some of the people and heard the bullshit about how they were going to ‘sell’ something that was based on total BS, I started to wonder about the ethics behind the advertising. Of course walking into the front office and seeing a huge mural of the owner done in Peter Max pop art style deifying himself didn’t help. I found I am going to be facing a future of big egos that can spin the BS better than anyone I knew and I had to rethink my game plan.

I came to the conclusion I could live with myself a whole lot better by performing a real service and got into working more in tech advertising, technical spec sheets and cataloging that had real information of benefit to people buying equipment and goods that performed actual functions.

The old money doesn’t mean anything if you have to do what you are not comfortable with situation. I could always sleep at night and could always face all those I worked with.

Around 1971, we paid $150 for a Texas Instruments TI-10 because it would do square roots. That was about a week’s wages from the assembly line. Almost every week for a year or so the price came down about $10. I swear, the last offer I saw for it was a coupon in a freakn’ cereal box to get one free.

And again,,, as stated, it’s because NO ONE WAS COOKING THERE the county has no control over a meal served IN A PUBLIC PLACE

First, I wish I’d gotten here before this turned into the kerfuffle it did, and I’m glad both have stepped away for just a minute. What I’d like to do is slight education and clarification. I spend almost a decade as a librarian in Georgia so I can actually speak with a degree of authority on this subject.

The reason has nothing to do with “no one cooking there”. The thing is that libraries are a semi-public forum. That usually comes into play in free speech discussions, but it also happens to come in play for public safety.

As a government facility that is a semi-public forum a library is reasonably expected to provide for the health and safety of its patrons. THAT MEANS that if it has an event that specifically includes food on the premises it takes reasonable precautions to ensure the food is safe. Waivers (It’s a potluck we have no control over everyone’s kitchen eat at your own risk) have limitations determined by law and court precedence.

A church is not a semi-public forum. It does not run into those issues.

By the way, the complexities and difficulties have led a lot of libraries to make radical and extreme changes to their public meeting room allowances, some going so far as to no longer using them as public meeting rooms. That’s not just a Georgia thing, either.

Reid may be about to go nuclear in the senate after the GOP stonewalls yet another slate of badly-needed judges’ appointments.

I am, I admit, torn, with the caveat that the half-step proposed is almost guaranteed to force the next step on the slippery slope.

The nuclear under discussion is ‘just’ for Presidential nominations (cabinet, judges, etc) excluding Supreme Court justices.

The argument against is the slippery slope plus mirror.

The mirror is obvious. Eventually (so goes the argument) the roles will be reversed. Filibusters have long been one of the tools in the Senate that made it the saucer to cool the House’s legislative tea, and by removing it the senate becomes far less of a barrier against the ‘tyranny of the majority’. One recent case example: the privatization of social security which was Bush’s big social goal of the second term. The keystone to delaying it long enough for public sentiment to bury it was the democratic minority’s filibuster. Take away the filibuster and the consequences become ugly.

The slippery slope is also obvious. For now it’s ‘just’ some appointments. Then it’s appointments and treaties. Or certain classes of bills. And then more, till eventually there is no filibuster at all. And as I noted at the beginning, intentionally excluding a supreme court appointment - an appointment which based on what we went through for Kagan and Sotomayer is going to be extraordinarily ugly - seems to be intentionally setting up the next step on the slope. (What, you don’t think the first few candidates for the SCOTUS will be filibustered for Obamacare and Benghazi and The Blackhouse and just because they’re not tea party? Bless your heart, that’s ok; we need the dreamers too.)

That’s the con. But the fact remains the current obstruction and nullification is extraordinary. Sometimes the choices are bad and worse, and it’s beginning to look like bad is the best we’ve got.

And of course there’s the difficulty of getting the license/photo ID even when you DO make it to the DMV in Texas. That’s where the ‘different name on legal forms’ comes into play, among other things. I did a longish rant a while back in response to a ‘voters only need one ID at the poll’ comment, I can probably find and link if I have to.

Everyone notes the problem with different name by marriage. But if you’ve got a hyphenated surname it’s probably got too many characters for some forms and you run into the name. If you got a clerk who typed what they heard instead of what they saw on the paper you handed them, you might have a problem.

That last I can attest to having had it more than once. My first name is Kirklin, I go by Kirk, and I’ve got a crapload of official documents that include official corrections for a clerk typing Kirkland or Kirt or Kurt or Curt. Heck, my passport had to be redone - both because the idiot clerk used my driver license instead of my birth certificate and what I put on the form for my “state of birth” AND because my name was wrong. (Longer to get the replacement than the original.)

While the name’s my big bugaboo there are other issues that make it harder than it needs to be to get a Texas ID for voting.

Needs must as the devil drives. You cannot have a chamber governed by norms and comity when nearly 40% of the body are at the psycho-emotional level of a dung-flinging colobus monkey (I’ll not insult the Pan troglodytes by comparison of our noble cousins-of-the-thumb with the GOP, thank you very much!) and are motivated only by nihilism, egoism, and their fear of a more-eager shit-slinger replacing them.

And there is little indication that the Senate GOP will be moderating (I think this is due to the larger amount of money needed to run a state-wide campaign).

The filibuster has to go, this is a necessary but not sufficient first step.

EDIT: I should note that further wiki-diving has indicated that colobi practice allomothering (that is, the raising of infants by non-maternal family members or small social groups in addition to the more common maternal-care model). In this they actually display more prosocial behavior than the GOP. I regret my slur against colobi.

Good comment, but the upding is for obscure Irish sayings.

CNN:

Washington (CNN) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, frustrated by Republicans who have been blocking President Barack Obama’s nominees, Thursday moved to introduce the so-called nuclear option.

The controversial move is a rules change that could make a partisan environment even more divisive because it would take away a sacrosanct right for any party in the Senate minority–the right to filibuster.

Then at the very end of the article we see this

In 2005, the then majority Republicans threatened the nuclear option to prevent Democratic filibusters of President George W. Bush’s judicial nominees. The confrontation was averted thanks to an agreement by a bipartisan group of 14 senators.

So the filibuster is super-sacrosanct except in 2005 when the GOP controlled the chamber and threatened to end it. //

These people who do this religious BS at public schools are just trying to make a point.

The schools should tell them to contribute, if they wish, to the Marine Corp Toys for Tots program and other organizations if they wish. When I lived in Charlotte, you could also drop off toys at any City fire station.

If people want their churches to do this, they’re perfectly free to do so at their churches, but schools are secular, public, and have kids of many religions (or none) attending, and don’t have to “honor christian principles” per se.

These people will never understand the concept of “separation of church and state”.

Tesla was the better inventor largely because he had an actual education, whereas Edison had been home-schooled by his mother. Both were gifted men, but whereas Edison could only go by repeated trial-and-error and work with what little he actually understood, Tesla understood the mathematics necessary to make his inventions work. It’s why Edison hated AC so, as Tesla had made it work where he’d tried and failed. Not only made it work, but made it affordable to any and all.

394 lawhawk  Thu, Nov 21, 2013 9:52:32am

Varek,

The latest GOP effort to drill, drill, drill (all while the nation is actually producing more fuels than it is importing), would coincidentally screw interested parties who want to object to proposed drilling - in other words conservationists and environmentalists, while giving a virtual green light to deep pocketed energy companies. Text of this bill is here.

To get the permit, all one needs is $6,500. Half that amount goes to the field office for processing all the associated paperwork, including to process protests, leases, and permits subject to appropriation (Section 111 (2)(E)(ii)).

In other words, the permit fee already covers the costs for processing the protests.

The protest fee would be $5,000 (half of which is used by the field office to process protests. That’s not an insignificant amount if you’re a NGO or nonprofit looking to protest the siting of an individual permit. But if an energy concern is doing dozens of these permits, it’s going to make it impossible for the nonprofit to protest them, which is precisely the point of imposing these fees.

Instead of putting the fiscal onus on the protestor, the applicant should pay more than $6,500 for the fee (which is chump change all things considered).

The existing law, which is at 30 USC 226(p)(2) makes no mention of any fees, either for the initial permit, or the protest fee.

OSHA wants to hold Walmart accountable for a standard that was neither proposed nor issued at the time of the incident,… The citation has far-reaching implications for the retail industry that could subject retailers to unfairly harsh penalties and restrictions on future sales promotions.

397 Varek Raith  Thu, Nov 21, 2013 9:55:26am

Lol.

Thomas Edison. The “Wizard of Menlo Park.” Described as one of the “world’s most prolific inventors” with a record-breaking 1,093 patents to his name. You know, a guy could round up and kidnap a buttload of children and keep them forever, but would you call that guy the “world’s most prolific father?” No, of course not. A “soulless monster,” maybe. A “skilled thief,” if you’re being generous. Perhaps even the “King of Pop.” But you wouldn’t call that guy “the world’s most prolific father,” because those aren’t his kids. He stole them. Such is the case with Thomas Edison.

Sure, Cracked’s staunchly anti-Thomas Edison stance is already fairly well documented, but we’re afraid one article detailing what a prick this prick was just isn’t enough. Edison is still celebrated in schools across the country for inventing the light bulb, the motion picture, electricity and a shit-ton of other important crap he had very little to do with.
