Reid Goes Nuclear, Right Wing Whining Reaches Fever Pitch

“These are Nazi Fruit People.”
Wingnuts • Views: 24,314

Denizens of the frenzied underworld of right wing blogs are completely and totally losing their shit today over Harry Reid’s use of the “nuclear option” to put a (partial) end to the GOP’s frantic, crazed obstructionism. Thousands upon thousands of raging, randomly capitalized and punctuated comments about tyranny and communism and anarchy and socialism and Muslims and treason and Nazi Fruit People … wait, what?

Breitbart “News” is always a good place for this kind of stuff, and any connoisseur of fine whines will discover plenty to enjoy today: NUCLEAR: REID, DEMOCRATS DESTROY FILIBUSTER, 52-48!!!

These are Nazi Fruit People. You Liberals better wakeup because the Democratic party
is following the same agenda and taking the same road has Hitler and the National Socicalist Workers Party.

[…]

Challenge them via the courts, it’s clear Obama and his regime consider themselves absolute rulers of America. Sicking watching them take power that doesn’t belong to them, evil corrupt regime.

[…]

Fuhrer Obama transforming America.

[…]

So this is how the 2 nd. American Civil War starts….True Americans against the New Socialist Progressive Democratic Party.

If I was a Democrat I would run and hide now…..Remember the GOPs have all the guns…..Democrats gave up their FREEDOM for their Messiah President Blamer.

[…]

Just one more nail in the coffin of representative government and one step closer to the dictatorship our “leader” has had in mind since the beginning of his regime. His is approaching his dream of a 3rd, 4th, and even 5th and 6th term at the “top”. Maybe this is 1000 year Reich that someone in history had predicted.

[…]

The Obama NAZIS have made a power grab, and the people of the United States of America have less power today than they had yesterday. Barack Obama’s celebrating his power grab by laughing in the media right in your faces, Americans may be too dumb stupid to even know that’s what’s just happened. What’s been ripped apart is the meaning and glory of an America that once stood for something. Now the US stands for nothing. The people are made losers by their servants. An American sellout from an American President and American Senate.

[…]

DINGY HARRY WITH HIS FACE SO SCROTAL,
QUISLING OBAMMER ,A BUNGHOLE TOTAL,
THEY SOLD OUT THE REPUBLIC, IT IS CLEAR,
TO THE COLLECTIVIST STATE THEY DO ADHERE,
NOW’S THE TIME FOR THE PUBLIC TO GO POSTAL.

[…]

the time is growing closer when we will have to decide is it time to take our country back, tyranny unleashed can only be stopped one way

[…]

Will someone please get rid of this anus on the behind of Obama.
This big pustual of yellow puss needs to be eradicated from the face of the United States Senate.

Hard to top that one! But it goes on and on for more than a thousand comments in this vein.

Wow, he must have really been a superfan of the DC circuit court.

When GWB was in the White House, here’s what conservatives had to say about the nuclear option:

Rush Limbaugh: “The Constitution Says Nothing About This. The Constitution Says Simple Majority, 51 Votes.

Sean Hannity: “I Believe It’s Unconstitutional To Filibuster.”

Wall Street Journal: Using Nuclear Option Is Better Than Letting “A Willful Minority Deny The President’s Nominees A Vote On The Senate Floor.”

Rich Lowry: Judicial Filibusters Are “A Perversion” Of Traditional Checks And Balances And Should Be Eliminated “Through The So-Called Nuclear Option.”

Karl Rove: “We Believe That Fairness Means That [Nominees] Deserve An Up-Or-Down Vote.”

Bill Kristol: “Congress’ Role In Approving Executive-Branch Nominees Is To Have An Up Or Down Vote.”

Pat Robertson: “These Filibusters Have Been Unconstitutional. And The Senate, I Just Think The Majority Should Say, `Look, We Want An Up And Down Vote.’

4 darthstar  Thu, Nov 21, 2013 12:52:16pm

I liked Reid’s response to McConnell threatening to destroy filibusters altogether if/when he takes power…Go for it! That will be your choice. Of course, the catch is McConnell is a ways away from regaining control of the Senate and he knows it…so his empty threats are all he has going for him.

5 Targetpractice  Thu, Nov 21, 2013 12:52:19pm

Some of them are trying to suggest that the GOP take this to the courts. That would be suicidal and is largely why even the TPers aren’t threatening to do so. Even if the court ruled that the rule change was unconstitutional, it runs the very real risk of all ruling that the filibuster itself is also unconstitutional. After all, nowhere in the Constitution does it say that the minority party has the right to obstruct as much as possible the business of the Senate. It says the Senate sets its own rules, and the filibuster is one of them.

But really, why are the wingnuts worried? They’re sure that they’re headed to a huge electoral victory next November, boosted by fear and hatred of “Obamacare,” and are sure that by this time next year, McConnell will be deciding just which legislation he wants to ram through first. So why are they screaming this is the “end” when they’re sure they’re on the very verge of victory?

Once again, we find that the definition of “representative government” on the right is actually “vanguard of white conservative Christian men”.

It’s kind of like how North Korea’s definition of “people’s democratic republic” is “personal plaything of the Kim family”.

We had the sky up there, all speckled with stars, and we used to lay on our backs and look up at them, and discuss about whether they was made or only just happened. Jim he allowed they was made, but I allowed they happened; I judged it would have took too long to MAKE so many. Jim said the moon could a LAID them; well, that looked kind of reasonable, so I didn’t say nothing against it, because I’ve seen a frog lay most as many, so of course it could be done.

My husband and I rather blithely made arrangements to stay at the lodge on the crater in the middle of June a few years back. (Which, if you ever go, it is totally worth the splurge for the crater-view rooms.)

We hadn’t thought about it (although we should have in retrospect) but it turns out they’d only just opened the south gate for the year about a week before we got there. (Our route would have been a whole lot longer.) Half the rim was still not ready for cars.

It was still a great time. We did Mt. St. Helens that trip too and the weather played the most delightful games with us - all foggy and low hanging clouds as we were driving up and went into the visitor’s center and then things cleared while we were watching the introductory film. So my first view of it was spectacularly frames with the low clouds all around but a gorgeous clearing and sunbeams on the volcano itself, white and gray and yellow streaked. And then it proceeded to snow/hail on us while we did one of the short hikes. :)

I think this next gadget is kind of neat, but others likely won’t:

Tac-Con 3MR rapid-fire non-NFA trigger for ARs (VIDEO)

New firm Tactical Fire Control, Inc., or just Tac-Con for short, has developed a very interesting new trigger that lets people shoot AR rifle very, very fast.

The trigger has three settings, safe, semi-automatic and a sort of reset-assist setting which is simply called “3rd Mode.” In 3rd Mode the trigger uses some of the energy from the closing bolt carrier to reset with force, enough force to reset the trigger even with some finger pressure on it.

This speeds up the rate at which a user can pull the trigger. A lot. But it isn’t a full-auto trigger, and technically it’s not even a bump-fire trigger.

According to Tac-Con the trigger is ATF-compliant and they aren’t covered under the NFA. This is because the legal definition of a machine gun or any select-fire firearm of any type is a gun that fires more than one round with one pull of the trigger. The Tac-Con 3MR requires that the user pull the trigger once for each shot.

I did St. Helens and Crater Lake in the same trip too (in August, so the skies were clear and so were the roads, although there was still some snow in places at Crater Lake). St. Helens is just so raw of an experience with the fallen trees and volcanic dust blowing everywhere as you hike out along Johnston Ridge. Crater Lake was just so much more serene (ironic, given that the eruption that created Crater Lake was something like 100 times more powerful that the 1980 St. Helens eruption).

The two are also linked in my mind by my (now) fiancee’s reaction to them. As we finished the St. Helens hike (no shade, blowing dust, etc.) she whined to me about when we’d be able to sit down and have a Pina Colada. Well, she got her Pina Colada on the patio of the Crater Lake Lodge a few days later. I had a beer.

My now-husband and I have been doing the big lodges in the Western national parks for a while now. We didn’t get to sit on the porch at Crater Lake because there was still a good 2 feet of snow on it, but we did enjoy a nice drink in their lobby area.

By far the current favorites are Old Faithful Inn (he proposed at the geyser, so it gets an extra boost for that, but it’s amazing all on its own) and Timberline Lodge, where you can sit at the bar in front of those huge glass windows and nurse a tasty drink in the warmth while you watch idiots strap boards to their feet and slide downhill.*

* I don’t ski since the incident with the backboard when I was 14, coupled by an increasing fear of heights that can be triggered immensely standing at the edge of a slope. No actual offense intended to those who enjoy it.

146 Dark_Falcon  Thu, Nov 21, 2013 2:28:27pm

It’s for those who like firepower but also want a good trigger for their rifle. Previous ideas in this vein were impediments to accurate shooting; This one isn’t. It’s designed to be a good crisp trigger and a strong and reliable safety as well.

It also turns out that 3D printing can be used to produce firearms using alloys that are very difficult to work using traditional methods:

Solid Concepts wan’t entirely certain how the first design would fare. Composed of sintered stainless steel they built the gun without any heat-treating, which would improve the strength of the parts. With version 1.0 still doing just fine through the first 700 rounds, Solid Concepts is doing something a little different for version 2.0.

The Solid Concepts 1911 2.0 includes the same 34 3D-printed components, but for the second gun they will not be made out of stainless steel. Solid Concepts is building the second gun out of Inconel 625, a “superalloy” of chromium and nickel. The material is denser and stronger than steel and using traditional machining methods, very hard to work with.

But with 3D printing, things are considerably different.

“Inconel 625 is a harder, stronger alloy than 17-4 Stainless Steel. We modified the geometry for this second iteration to incorporate different tolerances in order to make hand finishing sufficiently easier. With our first prototype, we had to hand sand to perfect a few tolerances, but our tweaks to the design should remove the need for such sanding.

The purpose of using a stronger alloy is to create a M1911 pistol that will last longer and be less likely to suffer a dangerous malfunction.

And with that, I’m outta here. BBL

156 Justanotherhuman  Thu, Nov 21, 2013 2:35:01pm

Got back from a dentist visit. Paid $100 for an xray and to find out that a molar will have to be removed and 2 small fillings for another tooth. Total for those? $428, plus another $255 for a follow up visit (grand total of $728 including today). Dentist gave me a Rx for an antibiotic and, even after I told them I didn’t want a “pain pill”, also one for Lorcet. The dental asst told me I could get a “debit card” to charge the balance on. No thanks, I’ve seen people describe those as having 30% interest rates and I don’t like to owe bills like that, nor would I pay those rates.

When I went to get the Rx filled for the antibiotic, I had the girl shred the Lorcet Rx and when they called me to pick up, the pharmacist (who I’ve known for many years) told me they had prescribed penicillin which he had called them and changed—he knew I was allergic to it. So, no, I won’t be going back to that guy (he’s had a practice here for many years). I saw that there is one refill available for the antibiotic, and when that runs out in a few days, I will just get it refilled and when I need it, I’ll have it, until I can save up enough money to see another dentist who’s more reasonable.

When did dental bills get so huge?

Once again, we find that the definition of “representative government” on the right is actually “vanguard of white conservative Christian men”.

It’s kind of like how North Korea’s definition of “people’s democratic republic” is “personal plaything of the Kim family”.

That’s why I call the Prime Minister up here in Canada ‘Our Dear Leader’. He really hates democracy and has done everything he can to ensure he’s the only one with any say.

Luckily he can’t go too far. Canadians are really nasty people when riled and even a lot of conservatives would object to Parliament being dismantled.

I think dentists are becoming too much like a service industry rather than a healthcare provider. My last dentist was just down-right creepy from the way he dressed to the way he treated his staff. He convinced me to replace all my old metal fillings with the new ceramic fillings, but never emphasized the possible down-sides, i,e., months and months of extreme sensitivity, discomfort, etc. During my last follow-up with him, he walks into the exam room sporting a nickel-sized cold sore on his mouth. I seriously twisted my ankle the first and only time I tried cross-country skiing. Turning without edges on the skis is hard. :(

There is that. I know someone who gave it up almost immediately after being told that they had to climb back up the hill they’d just skied down. No lift or t-bar to save them from gravity.

Seriously, the RWNJs promoting violence remind me of their philosophical ancestors in the Axis. They regard the other side as ‘weak’, ‘effete’, ‘poisoned by a decadent lifestyle’, ‘afraid to die.’

But which side won?

The biggest problem is family vacations not-visiting-my-grandparents growing up were either Disney World (shush, I’m still 5 and the husband owes me a trip) or skiing.

To the point that my parents now own a timeshare slopeside at Breckenridge.

Actually planning to go join them this year since I like ski towns and ski lodges. Just …not skiing.

Drink mulled wine, eat hot food, throw snowballs, breathe the cold, crisp air, and when you leave, the snow stays behind, not needing to be shoveled. Sounds ideal!

Yeah, I should have been the “ampicillin” and known it was a penicillin on the RX, but I was really, really upset with what I was being roped into at the dentist’s office. I’m sure I can find another dentist who will do the job for much less.

It is always worth getting a second opinion. It might cost a little more, but you might end up saving a bunch. You should be able to get the X-rays you had done today to take to another dentist for them to look at as well.

When I started grad school, I didn’t have dental coverage, so my mom found me a coupon for a cheap cleaning. Went in to get the cleaning done and during the discussion with the dentist he informed me that I needed 11 fillings. I’d never had one before that.

I ended up going to my (now) current dentist (recommended by the then-boyfriend) and had exactly one filling, with monitoring ongoing on the rest of them. That was 6 years ago. The filling still cost like $300 (I got the fancy no-show stuff), but they gave me the discount price since I was paying cash as a student.

There is a certain segment of gun culture that is, in its own way, extremely nerdy. They are cut from the same cloth as the guys who buy a 1994 Honda Civic for $1000 and then put $20,000 worth of gaudy aftermarket shit on it, like body kits, useless and/or counterproductive spoilers, engine mods, colored lights in the undercarriage, exhaust noise amplifiers, wheels made from metals that can only be mined on one of Jupiter’s moons, etc.

In the computer world, it’s the guys who build the absolute fastest gaming PC available and then go to all manner of warranty-voiding lengths to overclock each component in such a way that they score 0.0004% higher on a benchmark.

The AV/Home Theater world has the contingent who believe all sorts of insane voodoo, leading to a world in which companies can actually sell $1000 HDMI cables.

Pretty much every interest or hobby that requires gear of some sort will have a subculture of people who wastefully and pointlessly obsess over that gear, and constantly fiddle with it in very impractical ways. They end up spending more time modding their toys than actually playing with them.

I broke my leg once downhill skiing when my boot failed to separate from my ski as I tumbled. Yeah, that sucked.

If you do that again, do it at Alpine Meadows so I can give you one of my famous sled rides to first aid. I had a snowboarder last year who broke five ribs. Man, he was a mess. Never take on a tree, let alone two of them.

Broke a leg myself when I was seven. Broke a finger when I landed on a submerged tree skiing off-piste in my twenties. Now I wear a helmet and when I do ski in a ‘no fall zone’ (narrow chute with rocks/trees), I do all I can not to fall, but if I do I don’t fight it. Dive into the fall and let gravity take you past the widow makers.

Yes, and like a lot of people my age (72), I didn’t get regular dental visits as a kid. I was in my 20s and on my own totally when I finally had regular dental care. Most of my fillings are 30-50 yrs old, and as they fall out, there is decay underneath, so the tooth has to go. It’s the reason so many elderly people have dentures, and I’ve been lucky that I still have most of my teeth left, but they may not last much longer. Even though I took care of my teeth, flossing, cleaning, etc. during adulthood, I’m losing them at a fairly steady clip now. Most people undergo a lot of bone loss under the teeth as they age—it’s almost inevitable, and that loosens teeth, too.

Yep, same thing happened to me, only my lack of dental care came with homelessness and poverty in my late teens into my late 20s. All those amalgam fillings from my kid years shrank away from the tooth, bacteria got in there and ate the teeth from the inside out. Lost all my molars but one, ended up with a bridge and 5 crowns. Two of those have been replaced. I’d love to find a dentist that I felt I could trust entirely, but the one I have isn’t awful, I just think he doesn’t want to do some things(like lasers on small cavities) on me because my insurance covers nothing and he knows we’re not having the best financial times ever. Dental really should be part of medical insurance, why it isn’t I have no idea, but I suspect some of it is lobbying by someone somewhere to keep it this way.

…so what’s the purpose of something like this? Just trying to figure out if there is one beyond kill things faster.

I don’t think it would serve even for that. The original full auto option on the AR-15/M-16 was intended only for intermittent use under unusual, indeed, desperate, circumstances. The weapon is just not sufficiently robust for routine full auto fire. In particular, the barrel and gas tube will quickly overheat and the mechanism will jam. This is why the military eventually replaced the full auto mode with a 3 shot burst feature. Wingnut gun nerds, of course, don’t know this. They see their heroes blazing away with full auto ARs (from mags that apparently hold thousands of rounds), and they figure the only thing keeping them from doing likewise is the liberal gun laws and the oppressive National Firearms Act of 1934. They are always looking for some sort of work-around and this is just another example.

I’ve got two steel and one carbon road bike. BUT, none of them is newer that 2007. No desire for electronic shifting, or 11 speeds, or wheels with fewer than 20 spokes, or carbon fiber everything, and really no desire for a 16 lb bike. I kinda feel like everything was optimized by the mid 2000s, at least for my riding, and every advance beyond that is wasted on me.

And MTBs don’t appeal to me much, because I don’t like the lack of control one feels on dirt.

No actual offense intended to those who enjoy it.

next time you’re in the great Northwest, take a meal at the Multnomah Falls Lodge, you can sit back and enjoy the meal while watching the water fall after taking in the beauty of the Columbia River Gorge….

Not the best photo ever (we’ve now gone back two phones to find it!) but here’s the view sitting at the bar couches at Timberline.

Heh. I took my ex-wife up to Timberline Lodge a few years back and when she saw it, she immediately said, “Dear God, it’s that hotel from ‘The Shining’ - we’re not staying here, are we?!”

Mr. w has been on top of that a few times. Once, a year or two before we met, he hiked around the Timberline Trail in under 24 hours. He wanted to do it again for his 70th birthday (as a 5 day camping trip), but when he started planning it, he found out a big chunk of the trail had fallen off the mountain, and a repeat would be impossible.

Hahaha, I’ve been both to Timberline (obviously) and to the hotel that actually inspired The Shining - the Stanley, in Estes Park, CO.

Their bar had an AMAZING liquor selection, no joke. Something like 600 different Scotches.

Never been to the Stanley, but I’ve seen photos of it. As I understand it, it’s reputed to be haunted.

It was a gorgeous old, grand building. We didn’t stay there, but did drop by for a drink since we were in the area. It’s probably on the list of places to stay when we do get back that way, which I think we will at some point - I’d like to see a little more of Rocky Mountain National Park than we did.

Earl Sampson has been stopped and questioned by Miami Gardens police 258 times in four years.

He’s been searched more than 100 times. And arrested and jailed 56 times.

Despite his long rap sheet, Sampson, 28, has never been convicted of anything more serious than possession of marijuana.

Miami Gardens police have arrested Sampson 62 times for one offense: trespassing.

Almost every citation was issued at the same place: the 207 Quickstop, a convenience store on 207th Street in Miami Gardens.

But Sampson isn’t loitering. He works as a clerk at the Quickstop.

So how can he be trespassing when he works there?

It’s a question the store’s owner, Alex Saleh, 36, has been asking for more than a year as he watched Sampson, his other employees and his customers, day after day, being stopped and frisked by Miami Gardens police. Most of them, like Sampson, are poor and black.

And, like Sampson, many of them have been cited for minor infractions, sometimes as often as three times in the same day.

Saleh was so troubled by what he saw that he decided to install video cameras in his store. Not to protect himself from criminals, because he says he has never been robbed. He installed the cameras — 15 of them — he said, to protect him and his customers from police.

[…]

Last year, Saleh, armed with a cache of videos, filed an internal affairs complaint about the arrests at his store. From that point, he said, police officers became even more aggressive.

One evening, shortly after he had complained a second time, a squadron of six uniformed Miami Gardens police officers marched into the store, he says. They lined up, shoulder to shoulder, their arms crossed in front of them, blocking two grocery aisles.

“Can I help you?” Saleh recalls asking. It was an entire police detail, known as the department’s Rapid Action Deployment (RAD) squad, whom he had come to know from their frequent arrest sweeps. One went to use the restroom, and five of them stood silently for a full 10 minutes. Then they all marched out.

New Device to Protect Against Pregnancy, Herpes, and HIV Is Possible

New technology debuted at the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists’ annual meeting last week will combine contraception and disease prevention into a vaginal ring. The small, flexible piece of plastic would be inserted high up in the vagina and could be left in place for 90 days. It would release both levonorgestrel, a hormonal contraceptive, and tenofovir, an antiretroviral that has been shown to inhibit the replication of HIV and herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2), one of the two strains of the virus that causes genital infections.

Now, my glasses are so old they are scratched-up and I have resorted to store bought readers because the lower part of the bifocals prescription no longer works. I cringe at the idea of having to get new glasses.

You can remove skin tags with less bleeding by tying them off with thread. It cuts off the blood supply so they slough off by themselves.

Shit, You have to cut at the base of the tag, not on the skin itself. I’d go to a dermatologist not a GP anyway. I have one near my eye that drives me nuts, I WOULDN’T do that on my own. Just can’t justify the $$ for something that is basically cosmetic.

That seems like a lot of fluoride.

One of my neighbors works for a water co and told me he’s seen the chemical compound they add to water as fluoride eat through metal. Of course, by the time you drink it, it’s diluted to an acceptable level. Don’t know about its application in dental aides, though.

re: #292 FemNaziBitch
I’m due for those too, but I’m incredibly near sighted and have astigmatism in both eyes so my glasses cost around 5-600 dollars. And again, insurance for this sucks. Last time I got glasses it was cheaper to use the sale frames and a store discount being offered than it was to use my insurance(I couldn’t use both, thems the rules) . And since I spend so much time outdoors, I need sunglasses or Transitions lenses that change when you’re in the sun. It’s about the same price whether I chose sunglasses and regular glasses or do the photo sensitive lenses, so that’s a wash. It’s been 2 yrs, I’m due for a new pair, but I can’t justify that and not give my kids and grandkids Christmas. I really shouldn’t have to choose, but that’s the way it is right now.

I don’t understand this country, why people are literally fighting against making things so the cost doesn’t screw over your finances. It makes me sad.

One of my neighbors works for a water co and told me he’s seen the chemical compound they add to water as fluoride eat through metal. Of course, by the time you drink it, it’s diluted to an acceptable level. Don’t know about its application in dental aides, though.

The anti-flouride people are INSANE, IMHO.

Shit, You have to cut at the base of the tag, not on the skin itself. I’d go to a dermatologist not a GP anyway. I have one near my eye that drives me nuts, I WOULDN’T do that on my own. Just can’t justify the $$ for something that is basically cosmetic.

ARe you on blood thinners?

SHE’S the one who did it. And yeah, she cut at the base, not on the skin.

No, not on blood thinners, and AFAIK there’s nothing wrong with my clotting times. Just a heavily vascularized skin tag.

Putting on the chemist hat: fluoride is actually just the name for the negative ion for fluorine. So what they add to water is either sodium fluoride, fluorosilicate acid, or sodium fluorosilicate.

Fun fact: hydrofluoric acid is some of the scariest shit out there.

Speaking of the carotid artery, the older boy has been using a pair of hair clippers in lieu of shaving, but they’re now so dull they’re more likely to burn the hair off than cut it.

re: #321 FemNaziBitch

I thought it might work well for all the stuff that never sells in the garage sales.

It’s a nice way to make a very big mess and have very serious repercussions for both you and the environment.

Treatment for a hydrofluoric acid spill is different than most other acids/bases.

In case of contact, immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Cover the irritated skin with an emollient. Cold water may be used. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse. Get medical attention immediately. While waiting for medical attention, it has been shown that flushing the affected area with water for one minute and then massaging HF Antidote Gel into the wound until there is a cessation of pain is a most effective first aid treatment. HF Antidote Gel contains Calcium Gluconate which combines with HF for insoluble Calcium Fluoride, thus preventing the extraction of calcium from the body tissue and bones. Another alternative first aid treatment, after thorough washing of the burned area, is to immerse the burned area in a solution of 0.2% iced aqueous Hyamine 1622 or 0.13% iced aqueous Zephiran Chloride. If immersion is inpractical, towels should be soaked with one of the above solutions and used as compresses for the burn area. Hyamine 1622 is a trade name for Tetracaine Benzethonium Chloride. Zephiran is a trade name for Benzalkonium Chloride. Again, seek medical attention as soon as possible for all burns regardless of how minor they may appear initially.

No, really. This shit is scary.

It’s possible that it was the fluorosilicic acid, which is a liquid and as an acid, probably could do some nasty things to the metal if it sat long enough at the strengths they add it at. Most things at high concentration can be dangerous.

I’m not doubting what he said, just a bit of pedantry. :) All of those additions are just a way to get the fluoride ion into the water - they’ll dissociate in one way or another to result in free little fluoride ions floating around, which will then end up in your mouth and can create an enamel-like substance on your teeth to help prevent cavities.

It’s used in a variety of industrial processes - it can etch things nicely, because it’s very good at eating away some things (like glass) while leaving other parts alone.

The problem with chemistry to dispose of things is that chemical reactions are equations.

That is, if you add Nasty Shit A to Nasty Shit B to get rid of it, it doesn’t disappear, but rather turns into (potentially) Nasty Shit C (and possibly D). Dump a pile of garbage into a vat of toxic acid and you’ll end up with a vat of dirty, toxic acid, with some other nasty shit.

I think that’s what happened to my teeth (and others in my family). We moved here 14 yrs ago and it’s been downhill, toothwise, for everyone. They give fluoride tablets to the kids, but not the adults; some dentists “paint” kids’ teeth with flouride, too. I buy fluoride toothpaste, but it doesn’t really help much, and also “drinking water” which is city water, rather than spring water, since we’re on wells up here (which is spring water, a marketing term).

RW Whacko’s are all over the concept of Property Rights. And, yes, this is a part of who and what we are as a country.

They are also big military/law enforcement promoters.

So, it’s ok the cops are violating the Store Owner’s property rights?

Someone help me with the logic here.

I am the poster child for cannot figure out what I want to do when I grow up, so I collect degrees.

At least, if you listen to my mother, that is a valid description of what’s happened.

You’re still young yet.

My wife only just stopped taking classes in this or that, having gotten a BA in Psych, a K-12 teaching credential, Permaculture Certification, LEED Associate Certification, and several other such. What she has yet to get is a permanent job, now that the boys are growed up.

Then again, THEY have yet to get jobs, too. I jokingly said to one that he has to find a lucrative career so that he can support his brother and his Mom and Dad.

He said, “Aw, Geez! Supporting four people? Man, that’d suck!”

Just then he realized he was talking to the only one of the four of us who has an income….

I kept telling her that we wouldn’t always ask her if she didn’t always know.

Finally she accepted it as her superpower.

It’s a much more useful superpower than mine, which is recognizing relatively obscure actors, like last night when I spotted a much younger “Uncle Leo” in ‘Birdman of Alcatraz’.

The burger was pan-fried/thawed with lemon juice and some black pepper. Garnish is fresh dill from the window box plants.

Not much interest in Obama’s plan to ease sanctions on Iran.

Reid pledges to move ahead with Iran sanctions in U.S. Senate

“While I support the administration’s diplomatic effort, I believe we need to leave our legislative options open to act on a new, bipartisan sanctions bill in December, shortly after we return,” Reid said.

I was once discussing the Death Penalty with a RWNJ - really nice guy, great fun shoot bows’n’arras with or have a beer with - who said that he didn’t worry about innocent people being executed, because he figured if they had been arrested and tried and convicted, even if they didn’t commit THIS crime, they probably had done something to deserve it.

Even more than that its a lazy police force making itself look energetic. Ezra Klein:
Nine reasons the filibuster change is a huge deal

5. As Gregory Koger, a University of Miami political scientist who researches the filibuster, told me: “Over the last 50 years, we have added a new veto point in American politics. It used to be the House, the Senate and the president, and now it’s the House, the president, the Senate majority and the Senate minority. Now you need to get past four veto points to pass legislation. That’s a huge change of constitutional priorities. But it’s been done, almost unintentionally, through procedural strategies of party leaders.”

I’m not so sure. You’re surely right that Miami Gardens has cops that would never have been allowed on the force in cities with proper hiring policies such as New York or Houston. But some of those cops likely would have been good officers had they been properly trained and lead from the start. Now, though, they’re likely worthless, since it’s very hard to undo ingrained bad habits in an adult.

I’m sure some joined as good cops, but when you have to function with a bunch of corrupt cops, you either quit or become one. Any other choice is extremely difficult, with possibly the same result, or worse.

Zedushka was dentist-phobic for 40 years, he claimed he had a “Marathon Man” dentist as a kid.

I got him on my dental plan last year and he finally got dentures.

Case Closed
by Gerald Posner

The assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, continues to inspire interest ranging from well-meaning speculation to bizarre conspiracy theories and controversial filmmaking. But in this landmark book, reissued with a new afterword for the 40th anniversary of the assassination, Gerald Posner examines all of the available evidence and reaches the only possible conclusion: Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. There was no second gunman on the grassy knoll. The CIA was not involved. And although more than four million pages of documents have been released since Posner first made his case, they have served only to corroborate his findings. Case Closed remains the classic account against which all books about JFK’s death must be measured.

BTW Salt Lake City is the best place to live if you are a skier. I have lived in Utah, Idaho, and Colorado (Denver). The Utah slopes and the prices cannot be beaten.

Gin is my arch-enemy.

Waaay back in 19 and 76, some friends and I had a party. I had just been introduced to what I thought was a marvelous concoction known as a “screwdriver.”

I got beyond wasted; my friends later told me that I spent close to an hour drinking from an empty glass with absolutely no understanding of what was going on at the time.

Not to go *all* Breaking Bad here, but I did wake up with vomit on the bed, my clothes, my face. They say God looks after fools, and I guess I must be living proof of that.

Gin + I don’t remember what = a night hugging the toilet and a day spent lying in bed with periodic returns to the toilet.

I no longer have any actual memories of it, but I can’t bring myself to think of drinking gin.

I’m that way with vodka. I can TASTE it.

Gin is my arch-enemy.

Not to go *all* Breaking Bad here, but I did wake up with vomit on the bed, my clothes, my face. They say God looks after fools, and I guess I must be living proof of that.

Vodka, as mentioned upthread, is my enemy.

I woke up, in a toilet stall in my dorm, slamming my torso side-to-side against the walls; my jeans around my ankles, and vomit filling the crotch of them and spilling over my cowboy boots; with friends urging water and Advil on me.

First, and worst, hangover ever.

Got to pay it back to one of those friends: after his 21st, he got about as wasted as I was. While he worshiped the Great Porcelain God, we talked about literature.

“Call me Papa.”

“You’re not Ernest Hemingway, Mike. Drink more water.”

“CALL ME hork PAPA!”

*sigh* “Okay, Papa, what do you think of bullfighting?”

*a long dry retch* “They’re cool. They should have them in Africa with waterbuffalo.”

“M— Papa, you know that waterbuffalo kill more people in Africa than anything other than hippopotami, right?”

“Yesh! That’s why it would be even better!”

The real conspiracies re: JFK are: “why did Oswald do it?” and “why did Jack Ruby kill Oswald?”

For the latter, I suspect it was his dad’s associates dealing payback, nothing more.

OTOH, when I swapped out standard Monster Cable speaker cables for their ‘Powerline’ high-grade cables, my wife, while still coming up the stairs and not knowing what I had done, said, “What did you to the sound? It’s much better!”

But yeah, I am aware of those for whom spending infinite money and time to asymptotically approach perfection is a point of pride.

The trick with speaker cables is not the brand but the wire gauge. The lower the number the better especially with long runs.

I have, tucked in a couple of out-of-sight locations, some pemmican. Made right it’s got ‘shelf life’ of years. (completely dry the meat. tallow, not suet. If using dried fruit, chop fine. Pack so critters can’t get it.) It isn’t tasty. Not bad, but not something I want to snack upon. Still better than most MREs I’ve had.

Raised Catholic, but I sympathize on the latkes, kugel, brisket, (kosher) wine, horseradish (my Uncle John made both red and white that would peel paint), sinkers/floaters (dumplings, in my case), and hard candy was always around.

Big negative on the chopped livers (my family didn’t do that, so I had to get that outside; and they were wonderful!) and I learned my lesson early with the candied fruit slice thingies.

Food is food. Want to know what is bad. A 16 lb bag of dry cat food and a 32 can box of wet will feed the cats longer than what we keep on hand. But if need be, will also feed us in an emergency (after we eat the cats).

Yes, I went there.

Being in earthquake country, my emergency planning involves a rotating supply of shelf-meals, 6 15 gallon water storage jugs, changed out once a year, enough spare food for the cats, and the fact that the house was built by and survived Loma Prieta.

Probably fucked if the dam goes, but oh well.

I hear ya bro..There is a little food left..You just can’t be unprepared in Oklahoma..When I first got here I learned that laziness will fuck you up in a Tornado or Ice Storm…I shouldn’t cry.. I weigh within 5 lbs of my playing weight in College and spent 20 years building Nuclear Subs for the Navy.
I feel proud..Remember the Arco at Pearl? 80 straight 12 hour days with a few slices of pizza a day working in the Arco..The girl workers stood right beside us as we rushed to repair a Nuclear issue. We were a great team that would over come any issue for the United States Navy.. Any issue..Period..Should I bring up in the 90’s when the Navy had a great many women join the workforce? I am so fucking proud of their skills and hard work..You have no idea how hard it is to build a Sub..Our American Apprentices excelled..

Goy as I am, I love gefilte fish and pickled herring.

Hell, all Juice cuisine is tasty as hell.

(I am sad inside that some stricter Juice cannot enjoy a bacon cheeseburger, but there’s other kosher stuff that equals such tastiness, so it’s all good.)

I don’t shop at Whole Foods any more, but one time when I was there I was browsing the vegan “cheez” cooler and I thought HEY I CAN HAZ CHEEZBURGER. But then I looked at the ingredients of the vegan “cheez” and I’m like THIS SHIT IS NOT FOOD.

GIN! I have to comment. Does anyone really like gin? My aversion goes back to one particular episode in my early 20’s during a ski week in Utah.

BTW Salt Lake City is the best place to live if you are a skier. I have lived in Utah, Idaho, and Colorado (Denver). The Utah slopes and the prices cannot be beaten.

A substantial portion of my family do, mostly in the form of Gin and Tonics. (parents and sibs, not wife and kids).

Check Trader Joe’s for the same thing, if there’s one around you.

They seem to do a better job with vegetarian/vegan ingredients. And, they don’t really carry much processed meat food itemss (just raw meat and lunchmeats).
