Good News! Texas Republicans Have Failed to Force Creationism Into Science Textbooks

Reactionaries lose
US News • Views: 28,133

Republicans on the Texas State Board of Education have been fighting a desperate last ditch battle to shoehorn their superstitious creationism and climate change denial into public school science textbooks, but in the good news of the day, the board voted this morning to adopt the textbooks without compromising the science.

TEXAS TEXTBOOK ADOPTION IS A MAJOR VICTORY FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION

No Compromise on Science Instruction about Evolution or Climate Change in Textbooks, TFN President Says

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 22, 2013

Despite last-minute efforts by some board members and political activists to derail the adoption of two textbooks, the State Board of Education today voted to adopt all of the proposed instructional materials up for adoption for high school biology and environmental science. Throughout the adoption process, publishers refused to make concessions that would have compromised science instruction on evolution and climate change in their textbooks, said Texas Freedom Network President Kathy Miller.

“It’s hard to overstate the importance of today’s vote, which is a huge win for science education and public school students in Texas,” Miller said. “Four years ago this board passed controversial curriculum standards some members hoped would force textbooks to water down instruction on evolution and climate change. But that strategy has failed because publishers refused to lie to students and parents demanded that their children get a 21st-century education based on established, mainstream science.”

The board voted to adopt all textbooks and instructional materials submitted by 14 publishers for high school biology and high school environmental science. None of those textbooks call into question the overwhelming evidence supporting evolution and climate change science.

The adoption of the Pearson biology textbook is contingent on the review by a panel of three science experts of factual “errors” alleged by an anti-evolution activist who served on the official state review team this summer. The publisher has insisted that the alleged errors are, in fact, accurate representations of established, mainstream science.

The board adopted the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt environmental science textbook after the publisher submitted a document agreeing to revise material that might be outdated. Scientists who have reviewed the publisher’s proposed revisions were satisfied that none of the revisions would compromise the integrity of the science in the textbook, Miller said.

There’s a reason why the Republican Party fought so bitterly to insert their junk science into these textbooks: book purchases made by the state of Texas are so large that they have a strong influence on which books are published and used by the rest of the nation. If the religious right had succeeded in Texas, the effects would have been felt far beyond the Lone Star State.

They lost. And science won, this time. But don’t kid yourself — the anti-science right will be back. They always come back.

Hopefully this will take enough wind out the fundies’ sails that these ‘text book fights’ will become less common. I’m not counting on it, mind you, but I’d like to see that happen.

A victory for real religion and real science. Those who wrote the Bible never meant for it to be a book of science, but of morals.

Its also a victory for pluralism. Whose creation story gets to be the official one, and treated like science, and who gets treated like myths or even superstitions to be derided? And where is truth in all of that and who decides that truth is then determined by the majority religion in the area.

They were really desperate to try that last minute move.

This will, I suspect, only fuel the fire for more “vouchers” in TX.

Meanwhile, the local schools hire douchebags like this one to talk to teens (from the same website, TFN).

This kind of fits in with what we were discussing downstairs, and I suppose since the guy is the “king”, you’re supposed to do what the “king” says and shut up about it, too.

That is just such a fucked up view of women and girls. I really don’t think this guy is “all there”. He’s just another fundie with a schtick, if you check out his website.

“They lost. And science won, this time. But don’t kid yourself — the anti-science right will be back. They always come back.”

That’s true unfortunitally and will always be true, until we succeed into making creationists and climate change deniers into such a minority that they’ll have no ability to get what they want. Even then through, they won’t shut up, but than at least they won’t be able influence what is taught in our schools or pass laws to corrupt science education in this country anymore.

One more win for America! One more defeat for Texas blockhead thinking. One more STFU to Rick Perry.

I wonder if the publishers were getting some flack from some of the other school districts in states that would have to use these texts?

I’m pretty sure they were. Texas may be big, but it is not big enough that textbook publishers can afford to print a run of books just for Texas and still expect to turn a profit. If enough other states said “we won’t buy this,” that’s what they would have been looking at.

This Week in God

First up from the God Machine this week is an important court ruling out of Ohio, which has an encouraging outcome, but which was also a closer call than expected.

At issue is a public school science teacher, John Freshwater, who insisted on distributing creationist materials to students, and surveyed kids on whether religion is important to them. The Mt. Vernon City School District told him to stop, the teacher refused, so Freshwater was fired. The teacher then sued, claiming the district was stifling his First Amendment rights to free speech.

The Ohio Supreme Court this week ruled against Freshwater, but it was not a one-sided decision.

Davies wasn’t the best writer, and Moffat has had to go a long way to make things fit again with Classic Who.

LOL no. Just like everything else, failure will make them double down further on the derp. Expect them to cry about Christian persecution and Marxofascist gubmint and about how Texas is overrun with libruls and squishy RINOs that gave in to political correctness and pressure from the evil union thug teachers.

He’s been in the courts fighting this and that for a few years. A one man crusader that is getting expensive for the state and what has it got him other than his own ego stroking. He has become a self-serving arrogant ass and in my opinion not very Christian as far as I ever understood what a Christian should be. I’ve followed him for a long time and often wonder if he isn’t living off his notoriety. I don’t know for sure, but it can be a good business being a god warrior.

Poverty is bleak and cuts off your long-term brain. It’s why you see people with four different babydaddies instead of one. You grab a bit of connection wherever you can to survive. You have no idea how strong the pull to feel worthwhile is. It’s more basic than food. You go to these people who make you feel lovely for an hour that one time, and that’s all you get. You’re probably not compatible with them for anything long-term, but right this minute they can make you feel powerful and valuable. It does not matter what will happen in a month. Whatever happens in a month is probably going to be just about as indifferent as whatever happened today or last week. None of it matters. We don’t plan long-term because if we do we’ll just get our hearts broken. It’s best not to hope. You just take what you can get as you spot it.

Is there a reason why we couldn’t have just a bottom line basic national standard for all public school systems? If the states wanted to do more, great, but at least if a decent minimum was met we would have young people who had some sort of solid base to start from.

So many of my son’s peers who graduated in the past couple of years cannot spell, write a decent sentence, find countries and cities on a world map, and can’t even name a favorite book. Many take pride in not bothering to read unless they absolutely have to. Many have gone off to college and left before their first year was up because they could not keep a passing grade. They’re home and working in retail or doing stuff like landscaping or waiting tables. (nothing wrong with those jobs mind you, but these same kids got lots of attention in HS and were steered onto a “college track”) What the hell happened? Public schools gave us people who ended up designing computers and sending man to the moon and other wonders of modern life, surely we had it at least a little right at some point, yes?

You know, for a prime-time sitcom (albeit with puppets and animatronics], Dinosaurs had quite a bit of biting social commentary.

If you got invested in the show and its characters, the final episode was depressing as hell.

I love illuminations. I’ve made them and am always impressed at the difficulty. Medieval scribes had to make their own ink, styluus (stylii?) and scrape mistakes off the vellum without leaving a hole.

All in candlelight.

NCLB did nothing to help IMO. Right after this was enacted, the State of GA completely changed the math curriculum. To a MESS. Instead of teaching individual math classes, like Algebra I and II, Geometry, Statistics, etc, it was all mixed together and taught all at once as Math 1,2 and 3. Over half the students failed. I hired a college math honor student to tutor my son, she had to admit defeat after two sessions, she didn’t understand what the hell they were doing.

I think there were good intentions there, but no funding was allocated to enact things and too many “experts” jumped in to “reform” things that weren’t broken in the first place. Not that our schools didn’t need help, but the things proposed were not what was needed. It was designed by many people who hadn’t been in an actual classroom in years, big mistake IMO.

More on John Freshwater, the guy mentioned in Backwoods Sleuth’s #14 above.

A summation from Wiki:

John Freshwater (born June 22, 1956) is a former science teacher at Mount Vernon Middle School in Mount Vernon, Ohio, who was dismissed by the Board of Education for teaching creationism in a public school, and using a Tesla coil to “mark the shape of the cross into the arms of eighth grade students”.[2]

Freshwater was suspended without pay and requested a public administrative hearing, which began in October 2008 and concluded in January 2011 with the hearing referee recommending the school board terminate Freshwater’s teaching contract. One week later, the Board terminated Freshwater’s contracts. Additionally, Freshwater was involved with two federal court cases regarding the accusations, one brought against him by the student who claimed “Mr. Freshwater burned a cross” into his arm,[3] which was settled out of court, and in the other Freshwater sued his employers, which he later withdrew. Freshwater appealed his termination, but the appeals were denied by two different appeal courts and the Supreme Court of Ohio.

Using the Tesla coil to “burn” the cross into a students arm was his first big deal that made Ohio news. And once that launched him, his crusade was on.

Here is a good link to a New York Times Article on him:

Teacher With Bible Divides Ohio Town

A bit from that NY Times piece:

One high school teacher said she consistently had to reteach evolution to Mr. Freshwater’s students because they did not master the basics. Another testified that Mr. Freshwater told his students they should not always take science as fact, citing as an example a study that posited the possibility of a gene for homosexuality.

“Science is wrong,” Mr. Freshwater was reported as saying, “because the Bible states that homosexuality is a sin, and so anyone who is gay chooses to be gay and is therefore a sinner.”

A third teacher testified that Mr. Freshwater advised students to refer to the Bible for additional science research.

School officials said Mr. Freshwater’s science classroom was adorned with at least four copies of the Ten Commandments and several other posters that included verses from Scripture.

Hopefully this final appeal at the Ohio Supreme Court will be the last we hear of him, but I doubt it. Wouldn’t surprise me if he turned this into a political career.

Deep breaths.

It’s amazing what sends me into a panic attack. I’m trying to sit here calm now, because I know it’s solvable and am going to vent with my lizard friends.

I swear I have a bum cable box. Sometimes a channel won’t come in & I get the message - call to subscribe to get this channel - a channel that I have been receiving all along. Usually just re-boot the box. Well today was TCM (GASP!) So I call after rebooting twice and dude tells me that the package I’ve been paying for for over a year is the package that doesn’t include that - they “must have done an audit” and found that I’ve been receiving it for free all this time. Pay 8.00 more a month and you’ll get it back. My freaking cable bill is 83.00 for internet and cable - including what I considered the tier below pay tv….for all this time.

I’m hoping I just got an idiot scammer on commission. But I’m afraid to call back because I still have AMC and holy hell on earth if I lose that one.

Time Warner.

……

typing that did not make me relax. dammit to hell I cannot stand the companies that just yank you every month and you have no recourse.

This guy has the best series of ‘How To’ books. I started with the Beginner’s Manual.

Also, there is an old, out-of-print-book I found at a used book store. I can’t remember the name of it. I think Aiden Meehan republished it with a forward. Ah, this is it. Seems it’s available.

George Bain is the ultimate source of “how to”, IMHO

I have the Bain book, it is excellent. I’ve also got some celtic knotwork/calligraphy/art books. I’ll have to dig them out but they may well be Meehan books because the covers look similar. (I’m really big on Celtic knotwork for all sorts of things, hubs has me drawing designs for his leather carvings).

Update on the well pump saga:

We replaced all of the underground pipes from the well to the pumphouse (about 10 feet), replaced the foot valve.
But the new pump would only stay on for 10 seconds at a time and water pressure was close to non-existent.

Attention lizards!

“After leaving the bath, let her adorn her hair, and first of all let her wash it with a cleanser such as this. Take ashes of burnt vine, the chaff of barley nodes, and licorice wood (so that it may the more brightly shine), and sowbread… with this cleanser let the woman wash her head. After the washing, let her leave it to dry by itself, and her hair will be golden and shimmering… If the woman wishes to have long and black hair, take a green lizard and, having removed its head and tail, cook it in common oil. Anoint the head with this oil. It makes the hair long and black.” (my emphasis)

I put the word burn into quotes because there was some fighting over whether there was any actual damage or if it was more or less a discoloration of the skin like a sunburn. Some doctors testified the coil could cause underlying damage to skin cells, etc. and a Tesla coil should never be used to contact a human. Freshwater said he did it numerous times and all he did was draw a simple “X” on the child’s arm. It’s just images showed the X was straight up and down with a long middle leg and a small crossing leg.

That is right where I started to wonder about the guy. Funny how he is anti-science, but uses an instrument created by a noted scientist and then claim his religious beliefs, but not own up to a cross. I figured right then, the guy is a dodging, lying, hypocritical, self-serving attention seeker playing the God card to make himself feel good.

For me, it’s the principle of the thing. If Iwas a parent I’d get pissed at anyone who did that to my kid, no matter how mild the result. If my kid had an accident in class and burned themselves, that’s one thing. You tell them to suck it up and be more careful next time. If the teacher does it deliberately, no matter how small, that’s wrong.

And yeah, it’s completely batshit. Religious freedom my ass. Another person’s religious freedom doesn’t include the right to harm someone else.

Busy weekend! Just a drive-by to post one of the strangest videos I’ve ever seen - and also one of the most amazing, due to the content.

Short description: Artist memorizes an entire song phonetically, backwards, then sings it in its entirety against a backwards instrumental track and records it, then reverses the tape so both his phonetically reversed vocal performance and the backwards instrumental track come out forwards.

Downside: ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ But it boggles my mind anyway. Enjoy!

Funny thing too, the parents of the kid that brought about the first real reaction and attention about the cross burning thing are also Christians. They just also happened to believe in the US Constitution. They took a lot of crap from others in the town, and eventually moved out.

Kind of sad, because Mount Vernon Ohio is classical small town America. I grew up north of it in the Mansfield area and go through Mount Vernon often on my way up the back roads to visit one of my brothers just a few miles out of Mount Vernon. So many un-Christian goings-on for such Christians.

Maybe Freshwater’s next stunt will be nailing himself to some big old cross. He’ll use his science background to make sure where to place those nails though, so that he doesn’t hurt himself.

The London slave case just keeps getting creepier.
London ‘slavery’ case women met ‘in collective’

In a statement, Cdr Steve Rodhouse of the Metropolitan Police, said: “We believe that two of the victims met the male suspect in London through a shared political ideology, and that they lived together at an address that you could effectively call a ‘collective’.

“Somehow that collective came to an end and the women ended up continuing to live with the suspects.

I read earlier one of the suspected slave owners was Indian so maybe he had a guru gimmick.

Intel finds Asian pollution makes computers sick, too

Intel engineers in Oregon are now discovering that rotten air is also taking a toll on electronics in China and India, with sulfur corroding the copper circuitry that provides neural networks for PCs and servers and wrecking the motherboards that run whole systems.

“We got the board and it was pretty obvious. You open the chassis up and you see blackish material on every type of surface,” said Anil Kurella, the Hillsboro material scientist who’s leading Intel’s research effort.

My son just sent me a Thanksgiving shopping list of stuff to bring to Alabama, because kosher meat & dairy products are hard to come by down there. Closest major market for kosher food is Atlanta.

1 big old turkey, or a bunch of turkey parts
Chicken breasts
Cut up chickens
Ground beef
All beef kosher hot dogs
Brisket

Farfel (a kind of pasta like spaetzle)
Gummi bears
Milk Munch (a candy bar like Milky Way)
Shredded cheese (mozzarella & cheddar)
Sour cream
2% milk
String cheese
Rye bread
Hot dog & burger buns

I figure we can load all this stuff into coolers and keep it in the car.

You seem to be taking the view it was all the idea of the US and European countries that went to Iran and asked for the deal. Seems to me this is Iran asking to get out from under the pressure of what the sanctions are doing. If that is the way it is going down, then why would they be trying to play anyone for fools, it would be foolish on their part? Who has what to lose in this? If nothing happens we are where we were. Further loss would occur to Iran. I think you have the shoe on the wrong foot.

Heya, Lizards,

Busy weekend! Just a drive-by to post one of the strangest videos I’ve ever seen - and also one of the most amazing, due to the content.

Short description: Artist memorizes an entire song phonetically, backwards, then sings it in its entirety against a backwards instrumental track and records it, then reverses the tape so both his phonetically reversed vocal performance and the backwards instrumental track come out forwards.

Downside: ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ But it boggles my mind anyway. Enjoy!
