Breitbart’s Obamacare Expert: the GOPer Who Thinks Evolution and Embryology Are “Lies From the Pit of Hell”

Right wing journalism collides with right wing science, hilarity ensues
Wingnuts • Views: 25,809

Today at the increasingly unhinged right wing propaganda site that Andrew Breitbart built, they have a new “expert” on health care, with an EXCLUSIVE breaking news report: EXCLUSIVE: STOP WASTING TIME TRYING TO FIX OBAMACARE!!!

This exclusive opinion on health care and medical science is the work of Republican Representative from Georgia Paul Broun — who believes that evolution, embryology and the Big Bang are “all lies straight from the pit of Hell.”

YouTube

From Rep. Paul Broun’s (R-GA) remarks at the Liberty Baptist Church Sportsman’s Banquet on September 27, 2012, in Hartwell, Georgia:

BROUN: God’s word is true. I’ve come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the Big Bang Theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell. And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior. You see, there are a lot of scientific data that I’ve found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth. I don’t believe that the Earth’s but about 9,000 years old. I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That’s what the Bible says.

And what I’ve come to learn is that it’s the manufacturer’s handbook, is what I call it. It teaches us how to run our lives individually, how to run our families, how to run our churches. But it teaches us how to run all of public policy and everything in society. And that’s the reason as your congressman I hold the Holy Bible as being the major directions to me of how I vote in Washington, D.C., and I’ll continue to do that.

The perfect man to advise the nation on health care!

No wonder it is difficult to keep religion and government separate in our country when so many people will only vote for people with the same religious convictions. Even democratic candidates have to blather on about how their faith inspires them if they want to get elected. Bleh.

I seriously wonder what future historians are going to say about this time in American history. I sit up pondering how the hell World War I happened, and how seemingly advanced societies like Germany, France, and Great Britain could have been so willing to slaughter millions of each other’s citizens for no reason at all.

Isaac Newton was one of the most brilliant scientific minds that ever lived. He also spent an appalling amount of his time practicing alchemy.

It just goes to show how well the human mind can have separate compartments to hold conflicting ideas. One can easily spend decades in college, med school, residency learning all that there is that modern biology has to to offer, and then immediately wall off that part of the mind in order to head to Congress and start babbling about “lies from the pit of hell”.

I always like to point out, to any Creationist who claims to know something about Biology, that they have no rational reason for animal experimentation, since they do not believe we are any more related to a monkey than to a cantaloupe.

6 Sneaky Ways Movies and TV Shows Outsmarted the Censors

In 1968, the Star Trek cast and ocrew were filming the episode “Plato’s Stepchildren,” which featured aliens using mind control to force Captain Kirk (William Shatner) to make out with Communications Officer Uhura (Nichelle Nichols). You know: standard classic Star Trek stuff. Star Trek just wasn’t Star Trek if Kirk wasn’t being goaded by an alien god into some sort of sexual harassment. But when it came time to shoot that scene, the director and some NBC suits got uncomfortable — not because of the weird consent issues (this was the ’60s, after all; slapping a woman was considered foreplay), but because Nichols is black. Up until that point, scripted interracial kisses on television just weren’t done. The actors wanted to shoot the scene as it was, but since they weren’t in charge, there was only one thing they could do: sabotage.

Show creator Gene Roddenberry had suggested a compromise: they’d shoot two versions of the scene, one with the kiss, and one with a hug, and use whichever worked better. Everyone knew which version NBC was going to want to use, but luckily Shatner had a plan. See, a director can’t see exactly what the camera is picking up — only the camera operator can. So while they were shooting the versions of the scene that would preserve the purity of the white race, Shatner positioned himself so that the director couldn’t see his face, stared right into the camera, and made a bunch of stupid faces.

The director, thinking he’d won, immediately called a wrap and sent everyone home. It wasn’t until they were going over the dailies that they realized what had happened. They were forced to run the scene as originally scripted, resigning themselves to having to face an explosion of controversy that (twist!) never happened.

Truly, it was a leap forward for human rights, although whether Shatner was fighting for the progression of society or just couldn’t stand to miss an opportunity to get busy on national television is anybody’s guess.

No, he was mentally ill AND possibly had AS. I just bitched out the local ABC affiliate on their Facebook page about it, but I doubt they give a shit. There’s really no excuse for this, the Marcus Center at Emory is right here in Atlanta and has a press liaison that talks to them about other autism related stories. While outrageous, this is hardly unusual. Ninety-seven percent of rapists never spend a day in prison for their violent felonies, according to RAINN. They note that it’s even worse than it appears because rapists are serial criminals, “Because rapists tend to be serial criminals, this leaves communities across the nation at risk of predators.” So, when we let a rapist off, the chances are high that we are endorsing the rape of another innocent victim.

He said the NRA should teach Americans “excellence in gun ownership” and should “create a short list of the guns that are allowed at home.” Dreyfuss said other guns that remain legal but fail to make the short list for home use should be locked in armories “held and controlled by the NRA, not the government.”

So, as I see it, the problem the Right has with the Iran Nuke Deal is threefold.

First, it has the potential to be an actual positive accomplishment by Obama.

Second, if Iran is actually willing to give up on building a nuke, it gives the lie to the claim that Iran’s leaders are willing to have most of their population die in the nuclear firestorm that would follow dropping a nuke in Israel.

Third, Netanyahu doesn’t like it, and that means the Jooze might not all congregate in Israel soon enough to trigger the end times. Or something.

Shall we perhaps then call this the Age of Unreason?

A dear friend talked me into buying this book-The Invention Of Clouds. The plot is beside the point, it’s about this guy who names the clouds.

But it takes place during the Age Of Reason. Guess who filled auditoriums then like today’s rock stars? As sudden popular hits, making big money to perform for sold out crowds? Scientists. People who could demonstrate interesting science onstage. Chemistry. Physics. What became meteorology. That’s what and who used to sell out big rooms.

Well look at what sells today.

Someone was kidding with me about LA traffic earlier. Okay we have the solution in sight. Jetsons air car meet the super Octodecacopter. Maybe we can fly to work one day.

Pilots and gearheads unite!

Flying ‘cars’ are possible now. Flying cars as general transportation are not, yet.

For me the biggest problem becomes solvable (though not necessarily solved) with the introduction of ‘robot cars’.

I deal with and see too many idiots who do not bother to do basic maintenance on their vehicle. The idiots drive a few hundred miles on a donut spare. They’ll have bald tires and blithely continue. No checking the fan-belts or oil for them, nosiree. Add to this the number of idiots who get small- and near-accidents. Swerving, driving while texting/reading/eating/putting on makeup/trying to find what dropped, five lanes crossed to get that exit they forgot about - and for which they still have to back up to get, the list goes on.

A failed drive or fenderbender at 1000 feet altitude, with a school in the crash zone, fills me with utter dread.

Mandatory autopilot still won’t have everyone using it because you’ll always have the idiots who think they can do it better/faster. But make it possible for that to be illegal or require appropriate level of skills and review and, well, maybe I’ll be comfortable with flying cars.

If you don’t like a President who cuts special deals for Iran then it’s time to finally throw out your Reagan love doll.
3:25 PM - 25 Nov 2013]

I still remember back in ‘79 or so when the local paper where my staunchly conservative oldest brother lived printed these flag images with a message about bring back our hostages. Mu brother had several in his window and at that time it was all Iran this and Iran that, Carter this and Carter that with him. Then St Reagan was elected and the “deal” went down for the hostages and the paper flags left the windows. I asked him a bit later what he thought of us dealing with Iran to get the hostages back and he was for it as anything to bring Americans home is good. When years later the facts behind Iran Contra came out, I asked him for a review of that deal with Iran for the hostages. He didn’t want to talk about it.

And as far as Israel…do people remember at that time they were middle men for the Iran arms dealing? Or, am I imagining all that?

Funny how everything is Obama bad now, and yet it was a bunch of conservative heroes and an ally that are all now pissed off for Obama and Kerry doing a deal behind everyone’s backs and against their wishes.

Sometimes…

I wonder how many arms are being shipped over this deal? And I wonder where Obama has plans for the profits off these new deals? I bet you he spends it on the Obamacare web site and that whole thing goes away mysteriously. They tell me you can’t trust him! ///

Already have winter storm warnings issued for NE Ohio and western PA, down into WV, along with loads of winter storm watches and advisories beyond that.
For us in the Ohio River Valley, it’s snow tonight with sleet tomorrow morning until afternoon when it changes back to snow.

All those guns and only 106 rounds of ammo? That seems odd. Most gun enthusiasts have a lot more than that. Hell, even I have a lot more than that. I probably have that many arrows, and they’re reusable.

Or dear there has been a shit-ton of a leak from Who-land.

Namely, the entire cast for the Christmas Special:

Matt Smith - The Doctor
Peter Capaldi - The Doctor
Jenna Coleman - Clara Oswald
Alex Kingston - River Song TBC
Orla Brady - Tasha Lem
James Buller - Dave Oswald
Mark Anthony Brighton - Colonel Albero
Sonita Henry - Colonel Meme
Sheila Reid - Clara’s grandmother
Jack Hollington - Barnable
Rob Jarvis - Abramal
Tessa Peake-Jones - Marta
Nicholas Briggs - Voice of the Cybermen

Huh? It has already been disclosed that Tasha Lem is someone from the Doctor’s past.

However, why is Clara’s family here?

No wonder it is difficult to keep religion and government separate in our country when so many people will only vote for people with the same religious convictions. Even democratic candidates have to blather on about how their faith inspires them if they want to get elected. Bleh.

Here in Canada any candidate who made a big deal of their faith would lose. Even the conservative ones.

I think a lot like him. Except I may be even tougher; I think a lot of people could do with 1,000 sq ft or less houses, not even 2,000 sq ft, even families. Lots of people grew up in smaller houses; still do. Get your 16 yr old a new bike, not a car and invest in more public transportation. Cut meat consumption—it also reduces grocery bills. There are plenty of ways we can cut consumption, including a lot of energy use directly.

We are going to have to do a lot of this at some point in the future. We should plan for it, rather than panic when we start experiencing scarcity. We’re already seeing some of that and it’s not all related to the economy itself.

Ours was the laziest retriever I’ve ever known. He’d play fetch for two cycles then flop down out of range and chew up the tennis ball.

We did once dog sit one who was OBSESSED with tennis balls. She’d wear your arm out, fetching. In the week we had her, she found 19 tennis balls our Golden was too lazy to find.

An Aussie friend recommended putting a thin layer of Vegemite on buttered toast, then topping that with sliced apples and covering it all with cheese. That sounds like eating Natto. Any food that requires that much work to conceal is up to no good. And don’t tell me it’s a “Local Delicacy”. That just means that it’s “Dare Food” as in “McAngus, I dare you to eat a sheep’s stomach stuffed with it’s innards and some oatmeal to boot”. In all honesty, I do believe that some foods are a taste that has to be acquired at a very young age, before we develop a cultural mindset about how certain things can / should taste. Once that conditioning becomes wired in, it would be very difficult if not impossible to learn to enjoy things that are wildly outside what you’re conditioned to accept, especially foods with a very strong / pungent or unique taste or smell.

On the other hand, it seems that most people don’t develop a taste for strong cheeses until they are older, so I may have some work to do on the theory.

Vegemite tastes like beer, since its base is leftover brewer’s yeast. It’s sort of like turning a stout into a paste you put on toast. It’s strong, so at the very least you need to put it on buttered toast, otherwise the saltiness will overwhelm you.

The apple slices and cheese are a variation on a theme. In Australia, the buttered toast with Vegemite and cheese is called tiger toast. Some folks, like my friend, add apples to it. That’s how she recommended it to me.

Well, cheese with apples is always a good thing. One of my favorite breakfasts / snacks / heck just any time food is a good wedge of apple pie with a big hunk of sharp cheddar along side. Maybe I should pick up some vegemite, I wonder if I could use it sort of like I do dark Miso as a flavor enhancement for soups / stocks? I’d imagine that it’s got a umami type quality.

Very, very umami. Lots of glutamates that make it taste almost meaty. To me, marmite tastes almost like concentrated beef stock. You can definitely use it to add richness to soup, though in moderation both because of the saltiness and somewhat yeasty aftertaste,

Any food that requires that much work to conceal is up to no good.

All the best foods/drinks have a “Holy @#%*!, what the hell is that?” barrier when you first try them - Anchovies, capers, Caipirinhas, Brie, blue cheeses like Stilton, sushi, chillis

If you like beer, I can guarantee you didn’t like the first one you tried, you had to learn to like it
(the alcohol industry commissioned research into first-time drinkers’ tastes - found they hated the taste of alcohol, but liked sweet fruit flavours, hence all the “alcopops” that mask the alcohol with sugar and flavouring)

Thanks. Always willing to try something new (thus testing, but not disproving my theory). I’ve picked up using dark miso and nutritional yeast in stocks / soups from the Moosewood cookbook, and it sounds like this would make a good alternative to try.

re: #232 GeneJockey

Bacillus subtilis? Yeesh. There was a Post-doc in the next lab over, years ago, who was working with B. subtilis. You could always tell when he’d grown up a batch, because it made the place smell like old socks.

Gym sock-flavored beans over rice. No thanks.

The relationship between scent in the air and scent as “flavor” during gustation is odd.

Take, for example, Taleggio cheese. It smells like horse shit…literally literally. Waft your nose over it and you smell hay and fermentation and that brown underscent common to fecal matter. If you can put it in your mouth, though, it’s a different experience.

I can’t explain it at all…the Taleggio example is from my personal experience. Never would have thought I’d enjoy eating it, forced myself to cook with it, and found it far more pleasant than expected.

re: #242 RealityBasedSteve

Thanks. Always willing to try something new (thus testing, but not disproving my theory). I’ve picked up using dark miso and nutritional yeast in stocks / soups from the Moosewood cookbook, and it sounds like this would make a good alternative to try.

RBS

Marmite/Vegemite are close kin to nutritional yeast, I do believe. They differ in that they’re somewhat seasoned. Marmite, for example, has celery in it, among other things (I don’t why celery rates mention on the contents list).

Yes. She’s a workin’.

Could you create a ‘dudebro’ font while you’re at it?

247 Charles Johnson  Mon, Nov 25, 2013 6:10:06pm

We now have a series of special LGF tags for anyone who feels the urge to post code fragments from time to time, and yes, I’m aware that’s mostly me.

It uses the same “square brackets” format as the wingnut tag you may already know about. Here are the tags:

[javascript]YOUR CODE HERE[/javascript]
[php]YOUR CODE HERE[/php]
[html]YOUR CODE HERE[/html]
[sql]YOUR CODE HERE[/sql]
[css]YOUR CODE HERE[/css]

248 Charles Johnson  Mon, Nov 25, 2013 6:17:44pm

re: #246 Dark_Falcon

A very popular request! But not so simple to do. The wingnut font uses Comic Sans which is installed by default on pretty much every browser these days. But a dudebro font would have to be a custom font that gets loaded for every page, and I have to consider the trade-off between how often it would be used versus the increased loading time.

Continue to use Comic Sans but with different colors for different meanings? Red for Wingnuts, Blue for moonbats, Lime Green for dudebros?

Comic Sans is the only font loaded by default on most browsers that has a “goofy” look. The other ones are staid, conservative fonts like Georgia, Arial and Verdana.

That would work for me. I’d suggest keeping the wingnut color purple, but going with your proposed lime green for ‘dudebro’.

I was going to make the same suggestion after I’d checked the list of W3C “safe” fonts. For fun though, I’d use the more “interesting” reserved colour names. (vide w3schools.com )

The wingnut font is Fuchsia, amiright? Chartreuse is pretty lime and might serve for dudebro. LightCoral or Salmon or Tomato for moonbat. As long as the colours are sufficiently distinguishable…

Edit: Too slow.

Already on the road for the holiday, but I had to stop in to mention the fact that this “worse than Munich” stuff is idiotic Godwin nonsense. There are legitimate reasons for concern about the deal, but the Munich analogy doesn’t even come close to being apropos.

I will also take this opportunity to point out that I am REALLY tired of Obama being portrayed as throwing Israel under the bus in this country, while I have to defend him for charges of being an Israeli stooge every time I go abroad. OTOH, the fact he is on the receiving end of both charges probably means he is doing something right.

I’ll go..Just watched a cooking show about Oakland Raider’s Tailgating on Sundays. God the memories rush in..I grew up a Raider’s fan. I worked on Bay Farm Island in my 20’s. Just yards away from the Raider’s practice field.
The memories are flooding in tonight..I used to catch balls outside the fence from Ray Guy..I used to watch Lester the molester kicking the shit out of dummies after the team hit the showers..My girlfriend had a hot affair with a famous Raider..Those were the days my friends..Oh they don’t call it Bay Farm Island any more..It’s just Alameda..And they practice in Napa Now.. Dear Lord..One time when the Tide was down I tried to swim to San Fran in front of my friends at day break. I was a couple of miles short of the City when I turned back. That’s right..I’m an idiot.
I can’t believe the memories flooding in tonight…I used to drive the Bridge every night to party in the City..Damn..The Black Magic bar in the the City is the place to go..Hole in the wall pool joint.

I’m watching cooking shows..Couple weeks till I do the early retirement thing. People don’t believe it..And I can’t believe I can’t access my pension until April 2014…Really? That kindof sucks..I spent an hour on the phone learning that..Everyone was so nice..congratulations and all that.. I Gotta wait till April to get my money? And you really want to say Fuck you to the next voice on the phone..’Congrads on your retirement Hoopster’ Crap Thank you..April right? Yes April…Damn..

When I went to a trade school in SF we would congregate after class at what I think was Dave’s Bar, possibly at the end of Ellis near Market. They had a huge central bar with a glasses hanging from lighted cabinets above, lots of fancy carving in the wood structure, all self-contained inside a 2 story room. The building was at least as old as 1906. We would either get a booth, or one of the shuffleboard tables. Like a big shuffleboard but miniaturized with a high quality wood table instead of concrete floor. It even had those flakes you sprinkle on the board to make the biscuts slide faster. One girl in my class was just out of the Army, she could drink anybody under the table. One day she put me on BART after 5 zombies. I remember waking up the driver shaking me, repeatedly. As I slowly came to consciousness I recognized what he was saying, “Sir, you have to get off. This train is going out of service!” Fun times.

Too many MDs think they’re Scientists. Taking science courses doesn’t make you a Scientist. Doing Science makes you a Scientist.

I beg to differ, all MDs start out as scientists but I’m being stunned at the number of MDs who seem to have taken to forgetting or denying science.
Knowing a number of colleagues like this I have also noted many of the same people seem to have lost the ability to step outside the box and think for themselves when a case becomes complicated or just doesn’t go as expected.
