Renenber again the central image of the Tea Party: armed rebellion against a tyrant.

If that “tyrant” has been freely, fairly and democratically elected, then that makes the American People accessories to the crime of tyranny, and therefore also the “enemy” of the Tea Party.

They have no idea of the ground they are treading on because they never learned to think things through.

I think they don’t understand that the vast majority of U.S. citizens don’t give a shit about playing weekend revolutionary against the sole remaining super power, and just want to live their lives with as little interference as possible.

Relatively speaking, we have a pretty good thing going (with notable exceptions that have nothing whatsoever to do with Tea Party concerns), and have little interest in screwing it up with a blood bath on our city streets.

Delusional.

Three Percenters, like the Oath Keepers, “promote the idea that the federal government is plotting to take away the rights of American citizens and must be resisted. The two groups are apparently trying to make inroads in the U.S. military.”

Never heard of the Three Percenters, but of the current and former military I know, only one isn’t a member of Oath Keepers. I call him a friend.

The members of the Oath Keepers I know, I, unfortunately, have to call them relatives. They range in rank from E3 to O2. If there was just one, it would be too many, I’m related to eight vocal, violent, ignorant Oath Keepers.

Not surprising that you know so many in the military. Those who like being in the military to begin with (and they are volunteers, not draftees) tend to be authoritarian types anyway. And where would the right wing be without their authoritarianism?

Well, officially, it is still fall if you go by the calendar. But even in NC, with temps in the 20s and 30s, with sleet, ice and snow, feels more like winter to us.

Not too bad so far, just a bit of snow but supposed to change to mix of rain/snow/freezing rain during the day, then all snow this evening. Accumulation 4-6 inches (with locally higher amounts).
Fortunately, I’m prepared to ride it out.

Technically speaking, you have tropical storms, thunderstorms, ice storms…

It’s just that for certain areas (the Tropics, for example), it doesn’t make sense to speak of other types of storms.

How long does it take to tweet about two missing journalists in Syria (or physical attacks against journalists anywhere)?

No time Glenn? That tells you all you need to know about Greenwald. He’s so self-centered that basic decency and empathy are beneath him.

Journalism thrives because there are journalists willing to work the front lines of conflicts - actual armed conflicts - and face existential threats of death, torture, and maiming to get a story out. Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan are among the most dangerous postings for journalists because of the violence against them. Yet he can’t be bothered to consider a reply because he doesn’t have the time.

I am having to make the dreaded green bean casserole, but I’ll make it with sour cream, with a sprinkling of Mexican cheese under the onion topping. I also don’t “stuff” the turkey but will quarter oranges and put in the cavities while it roasts in an open pan with an alum “tent” until the last hour. The stuffing will be offered in a separate casserole, along with real sweet potatoes (not yams), gravy made with pan drippings and broth made from the neck and innards, fresh homemade yeast rolls (made on Wed & refrig’d), potato salad and deviled eggs also made on Wed. I have to make a separate stash of deviled eggs for earlier gnoshing because I don’t want to ruin the presentation and number on the table and someone always gets into them.

My granddaughter is bringing pie, mac & cheese, and a second turkey, although no one ever seems to have room for dessert. Having 10 people for dinner, so it’s all prep for the next couple of days. Can only seat 6 (plus 2 kids at the small kiddie table), so 2 of us will have to eat on the coffee table which nobody minds. Then, there will be leftovers to take home (my sons bring their own containers).

Yeah, I know it’s heavy on the protein, fat and carbs, but who actually comes for the vegetables?

Good morning Lizards from somewhat snowy (and soon to get snowier) western NY.

Looking at the weather forecasts yesterday morning I opted to accelerate my departure to visit my brother by 20 hours or so. So I drove up yesterday, including making a requested stop at a Finger Lakes winery to stock up on fermented grape juice supplies. (Got there 1/2 hour before they closed.)

And given the construction zones I went through on the PA turnpike and I-81 I am glad I came up in clear weather. Traversing those in rain/sleet/snow like is being called for in that area today would probably have been a slow, if not disastrous, journey.

So, sitting back in the room with the wood stove and drinking some apple cider now.

I actually preferred apt living when I was younger and do now that I’m old. I owned 2 houses between the ages of 37 and 59 when the second one was foreclosed on after I lost my job and couldn’t get another as well paying. Sometimes home ownership is not all it’s cracked up to be; you never actually “own” it until it’s paid off anyway, and houses can be a money pit—you are responsible for its entire upkeep as well as the grounds, and it can be an expensive proposition, esp when income and the economy slips. And it’s not fun to watch neighborhoods start to show deterioration with houses that people can’t keep up. I enjoyed the yard work, gardening, the decorating, even the repairs, but you have to have time, money, and energy for those, too, even if you are a DIYer.

Still, we should have the choice between ownership and rentals.

US housing permits rise at fastest pace in 5 years on apartments; houses remain mostly flat

I think I have the best of apt living—these are older units, but it’s a very small complex of 10 apts with owners who take care of the property as well as their tenants. My transfer to Philadelphia back in 2007 shifted me from house to apartment and I haven’t looked back. Two years of working a project in Philly from an apartment during the week made it clear that it was a workable position.

And it is summed up in a bunch of trade-offs. I have a number of benefits from living mid-city in an apartment (short walking commute, immediate access to a lot of restaurants and other cultural locations, no outside maintenance chores; e.g. lawn mowing, snow shoveling, hedge clipping.) In exchange I also pay more in rent than my old mortgage was, have much more noise and light than my house did, cannot sit outside in relative quiet, cannot grill, and also have less space and more neighbors in close proximity.

A third contrast is my brother’s place here in western NY. On an acre parcel set in some woods. Closest neighbor is 150 yards away - and you can only see the place when the leaves are down. There’s a pond, and wildlife is all over the place (not counting the chickens.) Flipside is at least three miles to the village, nine miles for him to get to work in another village, and about thirty to the Rochester suburbs.

While I love the homages spread throughout the episode (whether it’s the UNIT assistant wearing the 4th Doctor’s scarf, the round thingy TARDIS control room, the 10th Doctor’s last words (again), the War Doctor’s complaints about his future selves childish language (it’s time to grow up), or Tom Baker’s cameo as the curator), I’m not particularly fond of the way they’ve attempted to retcon history to spin it in a more positive light.

But, it also paves the way to have an older Doctor in Capaldi, following the younger Tennant and Smith. It’s time to grow up, as it were.

Speaking of decisions that Presidents have to make in turbulent times, I just finished “Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter”. I commend the author for such an undertaking. The real historical part was well researched. The fantastic elements were nicely blended into the narrative.

The third part of the novel, Lincoln’s time as president, was an eye-opener for me. I already knew the Civil War was difficult, but the extend the South tried to undermine his Presidency from the very start leaves a lot to pounder, especially with the current Tea Party/Republican actions.

The movie followed the spirit of the book, if not necessary many of the events. It was a good compromise that tied very well. Trying to film scene by scene of the book would have been too long for a 1:45 hour movie. Yet they decided to borrow events from the book, let the story write itself and not think hard about the actual history. The book doesn’t have this constrain and tries to keep the history as close as he can.

If anything, I prefer the movie’s ending to the book’s one.

The Michigan RTLers want to make abortion coverage more difficult to obtain, so they initiated this petition to separate abortion coverage from insurance policies. It would require affirmatively purchasing an abortion rider to health care coverages in all state insurance settings (exchanges, private insurance, etc.).

It means that a woman would have to think ahead to all possibilities where abortion might be necessary, including instances of rape or medical necessity, and pick coverage or else pay for abortions out of pocket.

It’s small government so small that it fits up inside the lady bits.

Yeah…I changed my original comment once I realized you had the link right there. My error. I’m working on adding parts to an internet store and listening/watching that great Squeeze documentary linked above. Good stuff.

Love YouTube for all the great stuff that you find now. What an outlet for the history of music. I’m so glad all that old footage, and videos, unknown releases, etc., are now available with a search.

Yesterday was Deep Purple Day…digging through the Deep Purple channel looking at old videos and live footage.

By the way, do you still play in a band, or anything? I still mess with a couple of my old band mates and we still write songs and jam just for the hell of it. When we get some of it completely finished I’d like to put some wave files up here to see what folks think.

Actually, that band still plays around on LI, I’ve got shows tomorrow night and Friday night. And I also play in NYC with a live rock karaoke band, which is a lot of fun. Uh-oh. Get ready for the sound of exploding heads:

Pope attacks ‘tyranny’ of markets in manifesto for papacy

(Reuters) - Pope Francis attacked unfettered capitalism as “a new tyranny” and beseeched global leaders to fight poverty and growing inequality, in a document on Tuesday setting out a platform for his papacy and calling for a renewal of the Catholic Church.

The 84-page document, known as an apostolic exhortation, was the first major work he has authored alone as pope and makes official many views he has aired in sermons and remarks since he became the first non-European pontiff in 1,300 years in March.

In it, Francis went further than previous comments criticizing the global economic system, attacking the “idolatry of money”, and urged politicians to “attack the structural causes of inequality” and strive to provide work, healthcare and education to all citizens.

He also called on rich people to share their wealth. “Just as the commandment ‘Thou shalt not kill’ sets a clear limit in order to safeguard the value of human life, today we also have to say ‘thou shalt not’ to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills,” Francis wrote in the document issued on Tuesday.

“How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses 2 points?” […]

These days I either cold brew or direct pour. Used an aeropress till I broke it. (Me, not manufacturer defect. sigh)

Direct pour - manual drip percolator. Get the water hot in the microwave or in the teapot, set up the percolator with filter and grounds and set over the pot (or cup if only making that), pour hot water through grounds at whatever pace I prefer.

backing up - the aeropress is a great thing for people wanting cold brew, too. Yes it’s slow, yes you have to put it somewhere nobody’ll accidentally press the plunger, but it’s already designed to deal with post-press grounds.

My regular drip coffee maker stopped working right (manufacturing defect) a while back so it wasn’t giving a strong enough brew. Bought a french press, and that’s great as far as that goes, but it’s awful in dealing with the grounds.

Got a new drip coffee maker (Cuisinart w/insulated carafe), and have been happy w/results so far.

Still will pull out the french press from time to time for coffee, but it’s also fabulous for doing batches of loose-leaf tea (though still with the cleanup issues).

Wasn’t able to get an aeropress at the time, but hear that it handles the grounds so much better than the french press.

Wasn’t able to get an aeropress at the time, but hear that it handles the grounds so much better than the french press.

I have a nice Teavana steeping device for doing loose leaf tea in - just does one cup at a time though. Which works well enough most of the time since it’s just me drinking tea.

Having finished my coffee (water heated on stove, manually poured through a Melitta filter) I’d better get myself dressed and to the grocery store, perhaps beating the pre-Thanksgiving crowds.

I always ask myself what all these people eat the rest of the year, since for every person in the store with a cart brimming over with groceries, there must be at least a couple people who aren’t cooking that big dinner and therefore aren’t at the store, right? And yet, the place will be packed.

The other people are in the store buying a few items to take as gift food for the big feed they are attending. I took care of that chore for my brother and I yesterday with the stop at a winery on the way up here. Though we might also be taking pie to a place as well.

I get loose leaf tea from Wegman’s (the one I frequent has a large selection of loose tea in cannisters where you can scoop out your own into a smaller package) or a specialist place about four blocks from the apartment. The latter has a nice Earl Grey blend that includes vanilla that I am quite fond of.

I’ve become addicted to Celestial Seasonings White Green Tea with anti-oxidants. The touch of orange and other citrus flavors make is similar to the way I used to drink tea…black tea with a squeeze of lemon. I had given up on drinking black teas as it started to make my stomach a little too loopy from the caffeine. Then I happened to try some green teas since they are claimed to be helpful and found this one day in the supermarket and I was hooked.

Just finished a cup a little while ago.

Brilliant photo. That particular overlook is probably one of those ten US “money shot” locations*. I have a few from my trip out to California in August. Not the same light though - which is part of what makes that one so striking.

The Thanksgivukkah‎ Stormageddon is fast approaching the NYC metro area. A wintry mix was beginning to make its appearance in Lower Manhattan, and the weather is only going to get worse over the coming 24 hours.

Thankfully, the storm wont be a snowmaker for NYC proper, but those inland and upstate (and into New England) will be seeing snow.

Stay safe if you’re driving anywhere over the next couple of days. Pack your patience, have a full tank of gas, and relax.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) — The former chairman of the Montgomery County Republican Party is under arrest, accused of drugging and raping a paralegal who worked at his North Wales law firm after a company party last month.

“In its presentment, the grand jury says Robert Kerns plotted and planned to drug the victim to render her unconscious so he could sexually assault her.

“They say he bought a bottle of wine from a restaurant and secretly dissolved the sleep drug Ambien in it.”

No doubt this paralegal had to dodge this guy repeatedly during the work day while trying to preserve her job.

Sorry, but that’s a stupid comment - if he doesn’t change the mind of a particular person he’s obviously not influential.

The thing is that approximately 25% of the US population is Catholic, and a larger portion of that population not only votes but contributes to political campaigns. Further, other denominations react to what the pope says, either in support or rejection.

I just finished reading the exhortation. I’m going to quote the first two paragraphs because the whole is merely an extension, going into detail and relevant expansions. And once you read it you’ll have some guesses from the non-fundamentalist churches.

source.

1. THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ joy is constantly born anew. In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.

I. A JOY EVER NEW, A JOY WHICH IS SHARED

2. The great danger in today’s world, pervaded as it is by consumerism, is the desolation and anguish born of a complacent yet covetous heart, the feverish pursuit of frivolous pleasures, and a blunted conscience. Whenever our interior life becomes caught up in its own interests and concerns, there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor. God’s voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt, and the desire to do good fades. This is a very real danger for believers too. Many fall prey to it, and end up resentful, angry and listless. That is no way to live a dignified and fulfilled life; it is not God’s will for us, nor is it the life in the Spirit which has its source in the heart of the risen Christ.

Not overnight, no. Change is like evolution, time. And if enough people are influenced over time it all changes. Look how far things have come for the LGBT community in one-quater century. I know one thing, a Pope would never have broached the subject back when I was still in Catholic school. Now, he is talking and others are too. That is change. Can you deny that?

What happens if enough people start to say…”you know we may have been wrong” and take a different approach to gays, etc.? Some of those larger churches need to pay bills…if enough people push for change, change will come.

Also, You, I and Bryan Fischer will not be around forever, how do you think the 30- and 20-year old church goers feel about it right now?

Uh-oh. Get ready for the sound of exploding heads:

Heh, Pope Francis is such a honey badger when it comes to this kind of stuff—gotta love ‘im. Someone really ought to page this. Gotta run. BBL

This quote from the Pope ought to give a few GOP types apoplexy:

In this context, some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system.

Also this:

While the earnings of a minority are growing exponentially, so too is the gap separating the majority from the prosperity enjoyed by those happy few. This imbalance is the result of ideologies which defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation. Consequently, they reject the right of states, charged with vigilance for the common good, to exercise any form of control. A new tyranny is thus born, invisible and often virtual, which unilaterally and relentlessly imposes its own laws and rules.

Cue the Pope Francis is a commie! outcry in 3…2…1…

That’s the key point. He’s not saying anything new in terms of what the Catholic church has been saying for ages. The thing is, he’s making those statements in terms of public policy, which IS new, at least when compared to Benedict, JP II, and the cardinals and bishops in most countries. Matt Yglesias says as much over at Slate:

I remember very clearly having been an intern in Chuck Schumer’s office and attending with the senator, some of his staff, and a wide swathe of New York City political elites an event at St Patrick’s Cathedral to celebrate the posthumous award of the Congressional Gold Medal to Archbishop John O’Connor. His successor, Archbishop Egan, delivered an address that went on at length about O’Connor’s charitable work, but on a public policy level addressed almost exclusively the Church’s support for banning abortion, for discriminating against gay and lesbian couples, and for school vouchers. That was a choice he made about what he thought it was important for people to hear about. Pope Francis is making a different kind of choice.

Honestly, I hope the Pontiff keeps it up. If he keeps talking about poverty and economic inequality over the social conservative stuff, and if he pushes for similar emphasis from the bishops and cardinals, that could be interesting. The reactions from the far right in the States will be fun.

An employer has the right to tell his employees that he disagrees with their use of contraception, That is what is covered by the First Amendment, not the right to prevent it.

He has no right to delve into an employee’s personal life, either.

I mean it in the sense that the employer can come out in public in favor of his beliefs, that is covered by the First Amendment.

There are other laws and guidelines governing how and what they can say to their employees about their personal decisions.

The point being that what consenting adults do with each other for fun in private in their spare time is NONE OF YOUR F*CKING BUSINESS nor is it the government’s.

I agree! I hope you and some others at LGF footballs understand what I was getting at. I am pretty sure others do, but it is a tough subject to frame into words without pissing people off.

I could walk next door or across the street and discuss it with my gay neighbors and they would get it.

The problems come, as you put it, when someone observes something and uses it for a judgment against or in a negative way.

I say it all the time, I celebrate people and enjoy people watching and studying their manners and interactions, hence my name here at LGF.

Also, I am a single never married male living in this type of “artist” community, artist, and very much celibate for personal reasons. I know how the cliches cut. Believe me. No matter how you live, past history, etc., people are sure no matter what. I too must be gay. I am not. I know it, and I am fine with my lifestyle. Others. like Catholic relatives, can think what they want, even if they do forget their Catholic teachings that I find myself using for personal reasons even if I am not a practicing Catholic.

And with that…time for lunch and to put on a flack jacket just in case.

For anyone who’s interested, Here is the full text of Pope Francis’ Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel).

Oh, and while he reiterated the church’s opposition to abortion (not expecting that to change any time soon), you’ve gotta love some of this stuff, LOL:

Pope Francis Lays Out Mission Statement, Tells Priests Not To Be Defeatist ‘Sourpusses’

He explained his most controversial remarks criticizing the church’s “obsession” with transmitting a disjointed set of moral doctrines, saying that in the church’s “hierarchy of truths,” mercy is paramount, proportion is necessary, and that what counts is inviting the faithful in.

He went even further Tuesday, saying some of the church’s historical customs can even be cast aside if they no longer serve to communicate the faith. Citing St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, Francis stressed the need for moderation in norms “so as to not burden the lives of the faithful.” […]

“I prefer a church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security,” he wrote. “I do not want a church concerned with being at the center and then ends up by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures.”

He added: “More than by fear of going astray, my hope is that we will be moved by the fear of remaining shut up within structures which give us a false sense of security, within rules which make us harsh judges, within habits which make us feel safe, while at our door people are starving and Jesus does not tire of saying to us, ‘Give them something to eat.’”

In the frank and often funny style that has come to define Francis’ preaching, the Argentine Jesuit chastised priests for their complacency, giving them a lesson on preparing homilies that don’t put the faithful to sleep. He reminded them that confession shouldn’t be “torture,” and told them to get out of their sacristies, get their shoes muddy, get involved in the lives of their faithful and not be defeatist “sourpusses.”

Yeah, I think that change is going to have to come from the Church membership pressuring the hierarchy to knock it off or the money flowing in dries up. I just think there’s a lot of engrained deferring to authority there that is going to be very hard to break out of. And maybe fear of making God mad or something. That’s what happened with Mom, her parents were so devout and blinded that they were more concerned about what people would think than they were with her well being. It was the 1940s and 50s when this happened too, so our culture overall wasn’t dealing with this sort of thing well at all. Not that we do now, but it is better. We have many miles to go sadly. We should be farther along on that, why we aren’t is complicated.

re: #286 Kragar

Problems:

1st amendment gives people the freedom to practice Islam.

14th amendment applies all of that to the states.

The end.

And Bryan will inevitably bring up the founders’ “intent”. Well, I’ll let Tommy Jefferson speak for himself:

Where the preamble declares, that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed by inserting “Jesus Christ,” so that it would read “A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion;” the insertion was rejected by the great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mohammedan, the Hindoo and Infidel of every denomination.

The 1st amendment applies to Muslims too, Bryan.

I have a young neighbor with lots of piercings (huge ear holes, nose, eyebrow & nipple rings plus probably ones I don’t see) and lots of tats and I’ve gotten used to him, though, and his visiting buddy who has even more. So does Steve Stockman own a farm? I thought he made all his money from the “Presidential Trust Hedge Fund” or something.

I think the concept is that if you have employer based insurance, they will somehow know. Which is bullshit —your employer has no right to your medical information.

Well, yes, of course they don’t.

I’d like him to say that to Sarah and Bristol Palin’s face.

It wouldn’t have any effect since they’re all fucking hypocrites.

Well, yes, of course they don’t.

There seems to be an effort to instill the idea that they do. Parentis in loco is the new meme for employers among the Whackos.

Your first comment said:

re: #283 Political Atheist

How likely is it that 60 very different tech companies and about 115 Congressional and Senatorial co sponsors would get this legislation or the need for it wrong? Not very likely.

You’ve got the numbers (60 companies! 115 Congress-critters!) and the appeal to authority (clearly the tech companies who are all different and generally don’t agree know best!) to say that this legislation and the need for it must be legit.

I mean, that’s what your comment said.

Of course, I don’t necessarily think that these two things mean that the legislation is well written. I made it clear I wasn’t commenting on the merits of the legislation itself because I haven’t reviewed it yet. I do think that there’s a lot of work to be done in this area to clarify the balance between privacy and national security concerns.

I also know there’s a shit-ton of dudebros in the tech industry.

How would an employer know if an employee uses contraception?

Large employers might have their own in-house insurance, rather than buying a Blue Cross group policy.

More on that private company. “Energy grasses” or bilking the govt for ethanol with BP’s help.

re: #319 dr. klys

Aha. the last line tells me the source of your issue. These are the very companies with the most at stake. That ordinarily is perfectly legit. But somehow, not today.

Worries about Dudebros seem to take precedence over absorbing the actual content of the legislation.

Removing the Patriot Act and support for this legislation polled well here. But discussing it hits lots of friction.

And so the Greenwald dudebro factor makes discussion so very difficult, despite the fact it’s not that hard to ignore the over the top advocates and look at an issue more sensibly than they do.

What if PETA made people resist legislation aimed at reducing animal cruelty?

By what measure is accounting for the level and kind of support for legislation an inappropriate appeal to authority?

Still they have no right to your private information.

re: #324 Political Atheist

The problem I had with your comment (and the reason I replied in the first place) is that you weren’t discussing the actual legislation. I specifically said I wasn’t commenting on the legislation itself, merely that numbers and appeal to authority are kind of shitty ways to try and sell it.
