MSNBC Gives Alec Baldwin’s Show the Axe

Saw this coming
Media • Views: 27,847

Oh yes, and in the other rather predictable media-celebrity-melt-down story of the day, Alec Baldwin’s MSNBC interview show “Up Late” has gotten the axe.

Alec Baldwin’s MSNBC show “Up Late” was canceled, the network said Tuesday, after the actor received criticism for using a gay slur, the New York Times confirmed.

“This is a mutual parting and we wish Alec all the best,” MSNBC said in a statement.

In some ways Alec Baldwin is like Mel Gibson: Both are excellent actors but they’ve got a screw loose somewhere.

They’ve both become rage-aholics, Baldwin especially so in recent years.

Rage, like booze, is sometimes a truth serum, and when least expected, the rage-aholic finds him or herself being inconveniantly truthful. To me it shows that Baldwin does have a deep seeded hated of gays, whatever he may say to the contrary. My guess is that he picked it up from his father.

My house still reeks after years. But there’s also woodstove smoke helping to cover it up. I also like to burn some of those scented candles that come in jars. Vanilla scent is particularly effective.

Oooh, good idea. I have some strong incense and some essential oils I can add to them. I haven’t used them much since I quit smoking—maybe I should start up again and see if I can cover up some of the cigarette smell.

I use one of those flat modern type mops with the microfiber cloth and HOT water with about 1/4 vinegar to water. Then Rinse. You won’t believe what comes off your walls and ceilings.

No need to repaint and prime. Wallpaper will probably have to go, unless it is solid vinyl and you can clean it.

We smoke and do a total Spring cleaning twice a year, at least. Some rooms will get the walls washed more often because of dogs, husband, and the kid.

Baking soda absorbs smoke odor — works better on harder surfaces, of course. A paste of baking soda with water worked on the (reeking) laptop I bought — had to leave it on a day or two and then reapply too (not on the keyboard or screen, obviously!), and maybe you could do something like that for your walls. Or rub the dry stuff onto the drapes and vacuum after a few hours.

Paper exposed to air loses its smoke stink pretty quickly, if you can leave the papers lying over your desk or something.

Once I tried to do a Wallpaper Removal Job on an older home. The Wallpaper was actually Paper, with no vinyl coating. The gunk that I normally used didn’t touch it. I was afraid it had bonded with the drywall. Eventually, I rented a old fashioned steamer and got the paper off the wall.

You wouldn’t believe how nasty 40 year old wallpaper from a smoking home can smell —steamed.

I think I improved the health of the whole family, just by getting that stuff off the wall. I can’t imagine what kind of little critters were growing in it.

Sealed the walls and repapered with vinyl paper.

I learned that thousands upon thousands of women seeking shelter in domestic violence shelters across the U.S. are turned away every day due to lack of available bed space. (According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence, in one day in 2012, 10,000 women in the U.S. asking for a counselor or a bed were turned away from domestic violence shelter programs due to lack of resources).

You know what would be better than tacos? Chow Fun. My favorite Chinese place makes really nice Black Bean Sauce Chow Fun. I’ve had it so many times it’s no longer exotic. It’s now comfort food.

Speaking of which, for my birthday we went there and I wanted to break out of our routine, plus I wanted something I could eat all of, even the leftovers, so I ordered Mogolian Lamb, which comes on a bed of puffy flash-fried rice or bean noodles. The older boy looked at it and said, “I see they just unpacked it.”

And I DIDN’T get all of it! Turns out the boys have decided they like lamb, and don’t mind spicy. Now no food is safe! Except the Garlic-Sauce Eggplant.

Hey now, I eat blue, or Roquefort, cheese all the time, so I would probably eat Stilton if I could afford it. I also love Brie and Muenster, but of course it’s all American made form pasteurized milk, not raw as in Europe, so is milder. My dad, however, ate Limburger cheese back in the day, which as a kid I thought was awful, and I think it was made w/unpasteurized milk, too.

One of the most sought-after cheeses on the planet, Roquefort was banned in countries like Australia and New Zealand until a year ago.

One of Napoleon’s favorites, Epoisses is definitely one of the smelliest cheeses you can find. Just so you get an idea of its repulsive odor, you should know that Epoisses has been banned from public transportation vehicles all over France

I feel obliged to point out that the only thing more reactionary and stupid than Dinesh D’Souza’s tweet is…every long form work he’s ever written.

The man is not just a paleoconservative, he’s a reactionary who feels that 9/11 happened because the Islamic conservative were right, and liberal culture is corrupting. You will doubtless be shocked to learn that his ideas about gender and sex are patriarchal in the extreme, complete with settling the weight of “civilizing” men upon the slender, stuck-in-the-kitchen shoulders of their wives.

His racism today is the other side of a bookend where he defended “The Bell Curve” on TV commentary shows, and the library between the bookends included many volumes explaining why white people were totally justified in colonized brown parts of the world, because White Jesus and also Cultures Are Not Equal.

The only thing I can say good about D’Souza is that he recognized Robert Spencer as a full-of-shit polemicist. Except that’s Faint Praise That Damns, since D’Souza seems to think the Taliban have the right ideas but the wrong religion.

The only thing more embarassing than D’Souza literary excretions is the mystery of why he’s taken seriously by anyone, ever. He has no academic qualifications to speak of…and you can tell, given his style of fact-free “analysis” that amounts to composing narratives that I’d politely describe as “elaborate exercises in camoflauging masturbation as intelllectualism.” His career has been one wholly of wingnut welfare…surprise, surprise, launched by the Heritage Institute…and his work of a quality in keeping with his origins. It’s conspiracy theories—-that The Left, The Feminists, The Atheists, and The Browns have made things go sour—couched in slightly elevated language articulated in a condescending manner that suggests intellectual confidence.

He’s a synedoche for the pseudo-intellectualism that defines the modern Right, which is why they’ve made him a millionaire. Actual research, actual rigor in analysis, wouldn’t produce the results they want…so it’s easier and cheaper to just claim the man with the suit and the four-syllable words must know something, or he wouldn’t be in a suit using four-syllable words.

And who says they father’s hung around long enough to even see their child born?

See, that shit pisses me off. My mom was widowed. She bought into that whole “father that God wants” nonsense and ended up in a second marriage for all the wrong reasons. My stepdad went to the same high school as my parents. The two families knew each other. I needed a father figure, she thought. Etc. I honestly don’t think she ever loved my stepdad. She loved the idea of me having a substitute dad. When they divorced, I wasn’t surprised.

Telling women that they need to be married and that they need a man around causes shit like that. Unhappy second (or third, or fourth, etc.) marriages and relationships out of some obligation to provide a male role model instead of the woman being encouraged to provide the best life she can for her kids, and if she ends up in a subsequent marriage that’s a bonus, not a requirement.

I keep thinking about that guy at CPAC who had to deal with a racist NeoConfederate in the audience. K Carl something. The guy who kept telling everyone “just say you’re a Frederick Douglass Republican” and that would magically make racism not an issue…but also had a lot of his own opinions—all of which amounted to him making ugly assumptions all other African Americans.

Like the cottage industry of repentant ex-Muslim Terrorists Who Found Jesus* there’s literally a commercial market for individuals willing to play out the Model Minority role and claim that every single complaint by every single person they share an ethnic identity with can be discounted out of hand. If one “ethnic” person tows the conservative, it’s not a sign that individual experience varies, but that every other person of that ethnicity dwells in some kind of false consciousness.

* and Jesus miracled the Mossad off their asses, apparently, in spite of repeated claims of committing terrorist acts in Israel.

Had to drop by an auto parts shop that’s on my way home from work to get some much-needed wiper blades. Even they had a sign on the door proudly proclaiming they would be open on Thanksgiving day.

I’d be utterly shocked if many of the businesses staying open will make enough money to even cover their overhead for the day, never mind turning any significant profit.

Do people really plan to go shopping on T-day? My family generally just shoots the shit for a while, falls into a collective food coma, and maybe gawks at football for a while before either going home or going to bed, depending. The only time I went shopping on Thanksgiving was the time I bought the turkey too early and put it in a cooler with not enough ice, then didn’t check on it in the days before T-day.

Hubris. Imagine my surprise and dismay when I found no ice, and a bag of Salmonella floating in tepid water.

I was completely flummoxed. I had NO IDEA what to do next. Luckily, my wife and I panic at different times, so she got all clearheaded and checked if any stores were open, and ran out and bought a replacement turkey.

Tucson police are investigating a case where three girls said they were held in captivity for several years in a midtown home, officials said.

Police responded to a home in the 2800 block of North Estrella Avenue, near North Stone Avenue and East Glenn Street, at about 4 a.m. Tuesday on reports of a domestic violence incident, said police Capt. Michael Gillooly.

When officers arrived they found two girls, ages 12 and 13, who said they were in a bedroom in the house when their stepfather kicked in the door and threatened them with a knife. The girls told officers they ran out of the house and went to a neighbor’s house. The neighbor called 911.

The two girls said they had been imprisoned in the bedroom for about two years. When officers went into the house, they found a 17 year old girl in another bedroom, Gillooly said.

All three girls — police called them siblings — were dirty and malnourished, he said.

They told officers they hadn’t taken a bath in four to six months. The two younger girls said they hadn’t seen the 17 year old sibling in about two years.

He said the two younger girls were kept separate from the older girl. They were kept in separate bedrooms, Gillooly said.

“They were kept in filthy living conditions and kept separately,” Gillooly said. “They told officers they had not seen each other in 2 years and were kept separately in bedrooms in that house.”

re: #220 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

They’re going after diminishing returns. If staying on Thanksgiving doesn’t do it, they’ll start the sales even earlier - going to Wednesday and before Thanksgiving. We’ve already seen some of that with Black Friday sales starting earlier at Sears, Kmart and a few other retailers.

Some of it is due to the relatively few days between Thanksgiving and Christmas (the fewest that can happen in a calendar year), plus the once in a lifetime nexus between Thanksgiving and Hannukah), and retailers are chasing customers for sales that might otherwise be lost online.

But some retailers are lazy and are recycling sales from last year, using even deals that they had last year (or actually higher priced from last year).

You might not find the best prices on Black Friday, but you’re more likely to find big crowds in search of those elusive deals.

Tech makes it easier to sort out the best deals, and businesses are trying to fight back, but in the end, if the customer does their research, they’ll come out with the stuff they want at the prices they can afford. And it doesn’t have to mean fighting the crowds at any point (or even stepping foot in a store).

237 lawhawk  Tue, Nov 26, 2013 6:19:16pm

And I’m much more willing to buy at stores that value their employees and give them holidays like Thanksgiving to be with family, than which essentially force them to work the holiday with crazy hours.

Here in Bergen County, the county and towns have restrictions on when the stores can open, so we don’t have those insane midnight madness events seen elsewhere. We still have stores open Thanksgiving, but they’ll have to close at 11 by local resolution (Paramus with the biggest malls and one of the biggest retail centers in the nation, is ruthless in enforcing those times).

We also have Blue Laws, which keep stores closed on Sundays, which means even fewer sale days this season, but that’s a separate issue.

For those who missed it (I don’t know how to post images, links, etc):

If women are the intellectual equals of men, why is there a World Chess Championship and a separate Women’s World Chess Championship?

That’s been a real tickler for a very long time. The original assumption was that women typically played a weaker game because there just weren’t many women players and they didn’t get much practice against top-flight competition. But even now, women compete in men’s tournaments all the time, and just frankly aren’t that good, relatively speaking. Judit Polgar even got invited to the last London Classic tournament, and just got pretty badly stomped. And she really is a world-class player.
