Black Friday

i think it’s very nice of them to hold this annual remembrance of the great stock market crash

let us all take some time out to remember not to buy too much on credit and never believe anything you hear and only half of what you see

I used to buy everything through Amazon but they pissed me off so much since they went to UPS + USPS/FedEx + USPS for shipping. I was a Prime member and supposedly getting free two-day shipping, but it isn’t two-day shipping when I have to figure out how to get to the post office, which is only opened five hours a day when I’m at work.

Because that’s where I am!!!!

It has been a good day for cast iron cookware sales. Three pieces before noon, at an average price of ~$88 each.

What? Don’t all bike shops sell cast iron cookware?

I’m a Prime customer and lately everything seems to be shipped via FedEx, which I absolutely LOATHE! Stuff shows up damaged and rarely on the promised date. And that post office delivery crap? Post office doesn’t deliver it and It’s almost a one-hour round trip for me to get to my post office.

I know; that was going to be in my post, but I hit ‘submit’ too soon.

The Wall Street Crash of 1929 is known as “Black Tuesday”; “Black Friday” is the traditional point in time where most retailers break even for the year.

Searching for a deal on a pressure washer.

I had a physics teacher who was awesome but had had some sort of brain injury that affected her pronunciation. She pronounced “pressure” as “pressa” and “washer” as “watta”, which means she would have said “Pressa watta”.

In her class, I learned the joys of magnot-icems and centrhappitoo forsaws. She was weirdly perfectly easy to understand after you listened to her for like a week, and the ‘defect’ actually sounded really pretty. “Calkincate the rate of deeksay obda hoolimentray port-icicle” sounds a lot better than “Calculate the rate of decay of the elementary particle”.

Yes, though “Black Friday”, aside from the modern retail reference, has been used a lot; some of the references are well-known (the Haymarket Affair and the assassination of JFK, for example), some of them are not so well-known (at least to modern Americans) or have been lost to history.

Seriously. Way back in the ‘I Am The 53%’ days, I wrote a post that I put up on Dkos about that. I talked about how fortunate I was to be born a white middle class male in America at the best time to be born such, born to parents who benefited from the Postwar economy, receiving a free public school education that at the time was one of the best in the world, and that a college education after that was readily affordable by much of the middle class without going into hock.

It’s really true that, especially for men of my generation and earlier, being born a white American male was like playing the game on ‘easy’.

What sadder is that it is apparently still profitable to do these Black Friday mega-sales after factoring in the potential (and real) liability costs associated with people in said mobs getting hurt (or even killed, in some cases).

I’d be kind of okay with making whoever saved the most number of lives over the course of a 4 year span be installed in a role of ‘conscience of the president’ where they got veto power on executive actions, but that’d be a difficult calculus. What if some riveter noted some cracks in the welds on a bridge and called attention to the problem, thus saving a bridge from collapsing? What if someone developed a vaccine? Highly troublesome calculus, but fun, would give work to ethicists and lots of associated PhDs.

Black Friday isn’t evil as some would suggest.. My favorite times were going to Breakfast at 4am and going shopping with my family. It can be an adventure, Like finding the Rock Star game the first year for the youngest one. But Nikki was the easiest to shop for. As long as it was clothes she was the happiest person on earth. I stopped shopping with her in High School. You try being a dad sitting outside the fitting rooms. The stuff she would try on was embarrassing. I would just give my wife and Nikki the AMEX after that and beg mommy to stop saying that looks so cute..

It was quite the eye-opener for a kid who expected to see him recycle the stuff he did with Cream.

This whole thing with the Romneyspawn is just so damned dumb. And who took the picture? Why was he in there in the first place, it’s obvious the building is compromised, wouldn’t the cops have roped it off and stuff? For being such a hero, he’s not got a hair out of place or a lick of dirt or debris on him. And, because I am Grinch x 10 why are there no pics of him doing his daring rescue? huh? huh?

If he really was helpful, bully for him. But I don’t believe it because I’m old, jaded and very cynical at the moment. Get off my lawn, bah humbug etc, etc…

when did single payer become a bad phrase? From day one of this discussion I have held up the Dutch system of single payer.. Day fucking one..My friend there pays 125 Euros a month.. Same as everybody else..
Doesn’t matter if you work for MacDonald’, painting oil on the Canal in Amsterdam or you are a millionaire.. You pay from unemplyement or your big time check…Everybody pays a 125 Euro’s a month/ Ok for a month a 150 Euro gets you a Cadillac plan..( Never saw that in America..I only pay a thousand a month ) . Before I blow your mind.. OK screw it.. The Dutch live to an average of 89 years…Choke on that Tulsa..

Blood for the blood money gods, right?

Another year of people being injured and killed senselessly and for what? To get a chance at buying cheap stuff.

Get a load of this from the duly appointed Walmart talking head:

Hank Mullany, president of Wal-Mart’s northeast division, said the company took extraordinary safety precautions.

“We expected a large crowd this morning and added additional internal security, additional third-party security, additional store associates and we worked closely with the Nassau County police,” he said in a statement.

“We also erected barricades. Despite all of our precautions, this unfortunate event occurred.”

It’s getting to be where nothing short of deploying the National Guard with live ammo and LRADs to some of these stores is going to prevent these stampedes.

It’s a fucking crying shame how some people just devolve when it comes to shit like this.

117 ObserverArt  Fri, Nov 29, 2013 2:43:48pm

This WalMart crowd stampede brings back some real bad memories. I was in that crowd in Cincinnati Ohio in December of ‘79 for the Who concert.

11 kids died from chest compression/asphyxia due to the crush and could no longer breathe. I swear that was in the doors/crowd I and my two buddies were in. We had no idea it even happened until it was announced after the show. We heard more about it as we were driving home to Columbus after the show. The three of us probably said three words between us the whole 1.5 hour ride.

My one friend is small, and he swore it was me and my other friend that carried him in, his feet never touching the ground. All because the promoter wanted to sell general admission seating. It was pretty scary for sure and like I said, we didn’t even know it was happening.

I read a good book done by a sociologist titled “The Kids are Not Alright” (If I remember correctly) and the author explained most of the kids that died rode in with the tide of the crowd and when there was less pressure and now open space they simply fell to the ground almost all of them already too far gone or in complete duress. So sad. And by the explanation in the book of what entrance and the time etc,. I figured most of the people that died were just behind us. I was in no hurry and surely didn’t try to push or shove, but that was out of all of our control…the crush took care of all of the movement once it started.

And the fact that it was at this time of the year, this type of Ohio weather…shudder! Wow. You know, you never know how close you come sometimes…

I am kind of glad right now that I haven’t got a call back. The only place I think I’d be OK with working right now is one of the pet supply store chains, I worked in a couple as a sales rep for a pet food company (12 hours a week, woohoo!) a few years ago briefly and I never saw that level of crazy at my stores. Smaller stores, set away from the nearby big box stores, so we didn’t see that level of ugly.

re: #113 jaunte

Walmart’s fighting it tooth-and-nail, because if they pay the fine, they’re pretty much admitting that they should have foreseen something like this could happen and that they were liable; that sets a precedent for more OSHA regulations for those sort of situations.

However, that’s not even the most disturbing part about all of this, this is:

But Walmart hadn’t exhausted its legal options. In 2011, the company appealed the fine to the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission, an agency wholly independent from OSHA that can choose to consider appeals. The case remains there to this day. Until a penalty is affirmed, a company doesn’t have to pay the fine or technically even fix the problem.

“It can take 10 years,” said Randy Rabinowitz, a lawyer, work safety expert and former counsel on the Senate’s labor committee. “The average length it takes to complete a case is obscenely long. And the longer [Walmart] appeals this case, the longer they get a pass.”

Melik Ahmir-abdul, a spokesman for the review commission chair, said the commission is sometimes hobbled by the Senate not confirming nominees; for several months this year, the body lacked a quorum and couldn’t decide cases. Ahmir-abdul said the Walmart case isn’t on this year’s remaining docket, meaning the earliest it could be decided is 2014.

Fuck you very much, GOP and your enablers and moneymen.

Re: that tweet about the teacher holding the sign

I don’t think most of the kids will learn a lesson from this. My daughter’s 8th grade class had a similar lesson, but it didn’t stop one of the kids from uploading a video of a female classmate peeing in a kids’ pool. Not leaving a trail of pee as she swam along, which is what I assumed they meant, she dropped her pants and let loose. Anyway in the 24 hours it was up the video was viewed by virtually everybody from 3 different schools before the kid’s mother had what I bet was a spectacular blowout fight with the mother of the one that posted it.

Did Huffpo explain why they have to fight the piddling fine? If they fail to quash the OSHA finding, the next fatal incident would be a ‘repeat, willful’ serious violation. That can get jail time for someone in a necktie. They only way to avoid that would be to actually fix the crowd-crush problem, for instance by changing their Black Friday BS.

Farmworker dies after pushing co-worker to safety

YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say an Arizona farmworker was fatally injured when she was run over by farm equipment after pushing another woman out of the way.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office says 60-year-old Ana Maria Barrera-Bogarin of San Luis was walking with another worker during a break Tuesday when they realized that a tractor pulling a produce trailer was backing up toward them.

According to the Yuma Sun ( bit.ly ), the women tried to run out of the way before Barrera-Bogarin pushed the other woman out from behind the trailer.

However, she was knocked to the ground by the trailer and run over.

Barrera-Bogarin was pronounced dead at a Yuma hospital.

Totally OT, but I found the color wheel I was talking about on Wed. If it doesn’t take you to the correct spot, scroll down* and you’ll see a wheel with yellow, cyan and magenta, with the magenta moved much closer to yellow and cyan splitting the difference on the other side. Since cyan and magenta produce a nice royal blue, your complementary color will probably fall in the yellow-green range.

I’m sitting here fighting the urge to buy. Not a nonspecific “I gotta SHOP!!!” urge, but rather the urge to buy something I will need to buy anyway.

We make it a rule not to buy anything on Black Friday, my wife especially. But, I got a package with the parts I need to tune up the Bianchi - cables and housing, new bar tape (in Celeste, of course), and the G-springs and carrier for the shifters I wrote about last week. I went ahead and rebuilt the shifter*, but in the process of pulling the rubber hood off, I tore it, so I need a new one. I found them on Amazon, even in Celeste. I had to stop myself hitting they ‘purchase’ button. Must…not…buy. Must…maintain…purchasing…purity…

*WW - it turned out one of the ‘G-springs’ was broken. And it’s not all that hard to take ‘em apart and put ‘em back together. So much GREASE, though!

Meanwhile, I made turkey pot pie for supper (the easy way, ready made pie crust) and simmered the carcass for turkey soup tomorrow, already strained and the remains picked over. Always surprised, after all these years, at how many meals can be made from a turkey when there doesn’t appear to be much meat left. Legs and thighs sent home with others yesterday and the breast meat was, of course, all gone, too. Easily fed 10 people yesterday, with all that left over. In fact, I may have to divide the soup stock and freeze half for later use.

There’s nothing in the stores that I need or want so badly that deserves getting in to a fight over. But apparently, a few people think it’s totally warranted.

Especially to the point of taking a baby out in the middle of the night. WTF.

Personally, I thought this was awesome. I’ve worked service gigs before. The jerkass, entitled customers that think they’re the only ones being inconvenienced are a pain in the ass. That guy wins, IMO.

Sure. The lady in 7A was espeicially lucky that the worst thing to happen to her was notes and booze. I would’ve been hard pressed not to tell her to STFU and deal with it because everyone else on the goddamn plane is also inconvenienced. What did she expect by flying on Thanksgiving? For her planes to arrive on time or even early? ROFL.

Yeah! Had no interest, but ended up no being able to turn the channel when I ran across it on CNN. I knew it was wrong to keep such large mammals in those kinds of conditions, but had no idea just how wrong it is!

I don’t get on here as much as I used to, but life has been a bit crazy.
Father in law died and left us his house, so we’ve been covering bills for 2 houses.

Then to top that off, some dummy (namely me) got lazy and didn’t file his estimated or his state taxes, which adds up to an extra 1000 a month out in just taxes. Just when we were getting caught up.

Well, considering how Greenwald defines journalism, his “support” of the Muslim community must be seen in a similar light. It has to be considered suspect and relying on his statements/utterances/tweets should be done with tremendous caution.

But it’s being done because it fits with his view on undermining US national security.

More Black Friday violence - this time at the Danbury Mall in CT: At least 15-20 people brawled in the food court today. Making the situation worse was someone yelling that a gun had been pulled. No gun found and no shots fired. No word on the number of people arrested either.

Other Black Friday violence includes one police-involved shooting and an apparent case of self-defense to thwart a robbery:

In Romeoville, Illinois, police shot a suspected shoplifter in the shoulder late Thursday night after the car he was driving dragged an officer through the parking lot of a Kohl’s department store, Romeoville Police Chief Mark Turvey said in a video posted by the Chicago Tribune newspaper.

Police were responding to a report of two shoplifters at the store when an officer chased one of the suspects to a waiting vehicle, Turvey said.

“The officer was struggling with the suspect as he got into the car, and then the car started to move as the officer was partially inside the car,” Turvey said. “The officer was dragged quite some distance.”

Another officer shot the driver in the shoulder and three suspects were arrested, Turvey said. The dragged officer was treated at a hospital and released, the Chicago Tribune reported.

In Las Vegas, a shopper was shot in the leg during a struggle with thieves who tried to take the TV he had just purchased in a Black Friday sale at Target, as he was carrying it to a nearby apartment complex, according to a report by KLAS-TV in Las Vegas.

Can I get on a gentle soap box?

Drug addicts (Heroin or not) are sick —physically and mentally ill.

If we are to work to remove the stigma mental health treatment we can’t fall into the trap of using such illnesses as negative adjectives when trying to portray someone. Usually the person has many other bad behaviors attributes that can be used instead.

Thank you.

It’s a stupid tax, which I’m paying. I’m hoping to have it paid off in a year or two with any luck. Now I’m trying to find paperwork from 3 years ago for the state, which has knocked off 250 a month. Hoping to knock another grand or two off the total so that I can get the payment down another 100 or so. Still damn tough, but easier than trying to pay 1000 a month. State demands payment in two years instead of the 5 the feds will let you stretch it over.

We went late this afternoon for a bit. Bergen Town Center. There was a significant police presence, in part due to the fact that Paramus was the scene of the recent incident where a gunman fired several shots before committing suicide at a nearby mall (the much larger Garden State Plaza).

The police presence included several cops wearing heavier gear (partial body armor) and at least one K-9 unit patrolling the mall. Much more overt security than in past years.

We were able to get in and out fairly easily, picked up a few things we were looking to get. But most importantly, we also dropped off stuff for donation at Goodwill.
