Important Notes About LGF Pages

Please respect the copyright of authors
LGF • Views: 21,406

It’s time to draw some attention to a few issues with LGF Pages, folks.

The most important thing to keep in mind when you’re posting an LGF Page is that if you’re quoting from someone else’s article, you MUST:

  • Keep the quoted section(s) short. No more than four paragraphs, and preferably fewer.
  • Wrap quoted text in a <blockquote> tag to make it clear that it's a quote and not your own words. You can do this by selecting the quote, then clicking the icon at top right of the posting area that looks like a quotation mark.
  • Include a clear link and attribution to the original source.

When these rules aren’t followed, authors of articles and owners of websites tend to get upset — and they get upset at me. This isn’t hypothetical. It’s already happened more than once. It’s very important to respect copyright.

Another important point to keep in mind: there may be times when an article speaks for itself, and all you need to do is post a quote and a link. However, the most interesting Pages are the ones that tell the reader what you think about the article. Something made you want to post it at LGF; tell the reader what that was. Write a few sentences or a few paragraphs of your own to explain why you’re posting the article, and your opinion about it. Not only does this make for a better Page, it makes it more likely that your post will be promoted to the LGF front page.

And finally, keep in mind that if you make a mistake or a typo in your LGF Page, you can edit it at any time by clicking the little icon at lower right of the post that looks like a pencil. And of course, the preview button is your friend.

I’m really glad to see so many people using these tools to create content, and I certainly don’t want to stifle that. But following these guidelines will help your content be much better, and make it less likely that I’ll receive irritated emails from other site owners.

Yeah, it’s not all that often that I run across things that I think are LGF-worthy.

I have a book report to do from my visit to Florida. My brother is involved with iDignity - providing ID’s for the homeless and poor.

I have all the info & photos, just need to get my arse in gear.

She’s got a cookbook open on her phone. She’s clearly not conservative enough for the GOP, Real Wimminz (tm) would have their recipes memorized or on old-fashioned recipe cards.

Carving the turkey by stabbing it in the back (with said cheese knife)…who carves a turkey that’s upside down?
That piece of bacon hanging out over the parson’s nose..eeeew…
Why is there a can sticking out of the other end of the bird?
Who wears plastic gloves to carve a freakin turkey at home?
Carve a turkey on paper towels? Really? Hey, Sarah, the grease is running toward your Blackberry…

And so much more…

We are LGF. Our interests are legion. If you post it, someone will probably like it. Unless you’re a troll, but even then, I’m sure someone here would take a perverse kind of pleasure in it.

Sadly, she feels she has to keep “proving” that, over and over and over.
And the more she whinges about it publicly, the more she draws attention to how she is sooo not what she wants people to believe about her.

Others said the girl may have been pressured to keep quiet. At the time, Steubenville area radio host David Bloomquist, known as “Bloomdaddy,” said he thought the 14-year-old was making it up. “I guess the best way to sum up what I’m saying is this: It’s easier to tell your parents you were raped than, ‘Hey mom or dad, I got drunk and decided to let three guys have their way with me.’” he said.

Texas is hard to say. You don’t need a permit to have one hidden in your car as you would here in Wisconsin. OTOH, they make it very easy to get a carry permit so if you feel the need…

When we lived on the edge of a bad part of the east side of Madison, I carried even though it was several years before CC was passed here. It helped that it was only a misdemeanor if caught anyway. Once they passed the law, I applied for mine as soon as I could and still have it. Though it’s nice that the only things I need to worry about most days are feral dogs or rabid animals. Down there we had shootings all too often - including one two doors up the block. At least that time they didn’t give me crap about it being fireworks even after I showed them the spent casings laying in the street.

I did our duck by flipping it every hour to get it crispy on top and bottom as well as getting enough fat out to avoid it tasting “greasy” while not being dried out. Worked really well, especially draining all the juices out of the roasting pan into the stuffing.

By the way, I read some of the guy Elan Gale’s airplane feud with a woman passenger, and I was a bit uneasy with it as it started because it didn’t really seem like it was any of his business. If his description was accurate, she was annoying, but so what? Welcome to reality.

But then he signed one of his notes to her with “Eat my dick,” and at that point it crossed the line into creepy and bordering on sexual harassment, and stopped being even remotely amusing. That guy’s an asshole.

Another reason to write something of your own instead of just posting quotes from an article - it makes a more convincing case that the quoted section falls under Fair Use doctrine.

BTW, this should not preclude quotes (properly attributed, of course) just being used in a post comment; section 107 of US copyright law :

[…] contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered fair, such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair.

1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes
2. The nature of the copyrighted work
3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
4. The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work

The distinction between what is fair use and what is infringement in a particular case will not always be clear or easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission.

In short, we are all at the mercy of copyright holders, their good will, and the (intended?) vagaries of US copyright law; IANAL, but IMO, as long as we intersperse our comments with germane quotes and don’t get overzealous and quote huge blocks (or entire articles), the law (and precedent) should be on our side.

It absolutely wasn’t his business. I suspect he has issues with boundaries though, possibly from working as a producer for a reality TV show.

I mean, flying sucks. Delays suck. Some people are more used to dealing with that than others. It sounds like the flight attendants were handling it the right way, although maybe they should have trashed the first note and just given her the wine.

Added bonus was it probably made the whole flight even more uncomfortable for everyone around them, instead of letting the earlier incident just fade.

Edited for word choice and a typo.

Columbia University has a extensive info on copyright available here. In addition to their section on fair use, they also provide a very handy Fair Use Checklist (PDF).

Please note that U.S. Copyright Law covers literally hundreds of pages of legalese, much of which is quite vague and/or open to interpretation and/or dependent on the type of work and context of its use.

Here’s what the law actually has to say about fair use:

§ 107 . Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use40

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include—

(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;

(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

Yes, some political cartoonists are very protective about their copyrights, and of course they have a perfect right to be. Not a good idea to post cartoons in an LGF Page unless you have permission from the creator.

IANAL, but my opinion in the case of images with a clearly defined copyright (political cartoons and commercial/stock photos with a known provenance, etc.), I’d just create a link back to the original source (the cartoonist’s syndicate or originating publication’s website, etc.), if possible, and not even bother with copying the image to the LGF image gallery.

It puts the associated web traffic on the copyright holder(s) and helps to keep Charles and us out of legal hot water.

Yep, basically anything prepared by an officer or employee of the government as part of their official duties is in the public domain:

7. Not all published works are copyrighted. Works prepared by an officer or employee of the United States Government as part of that person’s official duties receive no copyright protection in the US. For much of the twentieth century, certain formalities had to be followed to secure copyright protection. For example, some books had to be printed in the United States to receive copyright protection, and failure to deposit copies of works with the Register of Copyright could result in the loss of copyright. The requirements that copies include a formal notice of copyright and that the copyright be renewed after twenty eight years were the most common conditions, and are specified in the chart.

Copyright laws should change and adapt to the modern times, along with the businesses that use them. We shouldn’t be using those laws as a club to beat people into accepting the status quo.

re: #140 Backwoods_Sleuth

My feeling on this is probably too simplistic but, If someone is using my work as “fair use” to make money, said person damned well better have my permission to do so and link back to me AND (depending on how far beyond “fair use” goes) give me a cut of the proceeds.

Using it in a commercial nature that would lead to profiting from it would immediately put it outside the scope of fair use.

Awesome pricks have their fans. It’s something we have to fix.

I think I remember reading an article about a psychology study that humans often tend to identify with bullies. Despite the recent “everybody hates bullies” thing the study found that many people gravitate towards aggressive people out of self defense.

Creative Commons is a wonderful thing. The problem is, the world of copyrights, like that of patents, is full of people who seek to do nothing but take advantage of content creators. Both in screwing them out of copyrights and screwing people out of being able to use copyrighted material for their own works.

One of the networks, for their national evening newscast, just did a mini-expose the other day on how some Chinese firms troll the web for pictures of original artwork that artists put on their websites (so that prospective customers know what a piece looks like before they buy).

These firms then have their in-house workers copy them and sell them cheaply to individuals, as well as hotels and other commercial customers, worldwide; many of those sales end up in countries that stringently enforce copyright, such as the US and in Europe, but said countries generally can’t do jack about it.

Some people would look at that and want to cuddle and nurture the little sloths, other people would look at it and say ‘what a waste of a good bucket’ and yet others would just ring the dinner bell.

Sloths, the original SLOW food. (know I’m going to get hammered for that one.)

As for the tin can in the end of the turkey, that’s to keep the opening from closing down. The idea is that you can cook the dressing in a seperate pan, then when the turkey comes out you can pull the can out, put the dressing in the turkey, tent it and let it rest before carving. That way you are assured the dressing is cooked, and as the turkey rests the dressing can be busy absorbing even more delicious turkey goodness up into itself.

And thats a POS knife that she’s using. (Rule of thumb, any knife pushed on infomercials or endorsed by some chef you’ve never heard of is generally not worth it’s weight in cold poo. Good knives don’t have to be expensive at all, but a set of 6 for 39.99 plus S/H gets you krap.

Well, I came over here on vacation back in 2001. Then I met my ex-wife. Then I married her. Then we got divorced - but such is life, of course. But I like it over here so much, I just sorta stayed. Prague and Central Bohemia is too touristy for me, so after living in Berlin for a year and a half, I came back here to the Czech Republic, but went East this time. Ostrava is quite close to the border with Poland - only a few kilometers. Cost of living is far less as well. The studio I’m renting for $238 per month (including energy/water, etc.) would easily run me close to $500 per month in Prague.
