The saddest fact of recent human reality is that George Takei and Eduard Khil never performed a duet.

Just waking. I saw the comments in the other most recent thread about the young actor, Paul Walker dying in a Porsche car crash.

First, I am a huge car nut, auto racing fan, motorhead what have you. I never saw any version of a Fast and Furious movie. Not my cup of tea as I like real racing, the safety needed for it, and I thought that making a movie about fast cars can be a bit irresponsible. But that is just me.

I also understand a generation that grew up on a popular movie and how they can latch onto the actors in it. So, for all of you that were fans of his I am very sorry for your loss. It is never good when young people die so tragically. May he and the occupant rest in peace.

My point will be about going for a car ride in a Porsche with an actor of a movie called Fast and Furious. I do not know exactly what happened, but I have a feeling that if Paul was not driving whoever was may have been out to impress and it all turned bad.

Porsches are extremely dangerous in the hands of a novice driver. Heck, they can be a handful for a race driver. They are a rear engined car and as such have extreme over steer tendencies due to the weight of the engine being all at the very back of the car. That is if it was of the 911 variety. The image show makes me think it may have been a Carrera GT which is a bad ass car for sure, but again a Porsche. And the Carrera model is basically a race car for the street. It should be driven by someone who has had practice with it somewhere other than on a public road going fast for maybe the first time.

Unlike the 911, the Carrera is a mid-engine car, that is the engine is in between the wheels, toward the back. It has what can be considered neutral handling, meaning the car can be driven either “over steer” or “under steer” depending on how early or late you turn the wheel into a turn and how the accelerator is applied when in the the turn. Most daily drivers are engineered to be “over steer” which is the safest dynamic for the every day driver. It means you have to continue to steer the car through the turn with less possibility the car’s rear end will want to snap around.

In the hands of a novice driver, it is very easy to turn a bit too late with a lot of accelerator applied and the next thing you know, the Porsche is in a full spin, 90% of the time with the rear of the car leading the spin out of control. I’m gonna guess this is what happened as the image I saw shows the back of the car gone and into some sort of power poles or trees. Sadly a classic Porsche accident. Maybe they came up on something that caused a panic move of the wheel which caused what is called a snap spin.

It only takes a second for such an accident to happen and I can only imagine that once that car “broke” grip Paul Walker being a car guy knew what was coming. How very devastating that must have been.

People need to learn that just because you can drive does not mean you can drive a super car like a Porsche Carrera GT. There have been grim accidents with them in driving schools on real race tracks. Many car nuts think there should be a special license classification to drive a certain level of performance car that would require extra training and knowledge. Some refer to it as a super license.

I hope all his fans learn from this so other lives can be saved. I love cars, but they can be deadly, even good seasoned race drivers have had some bad crashes in car like the Porsche. Just a few weeks a go a young race car driver by the name of Sean Edwards died in a real bad crash of a Porsche Super Cup race car riding along as a driving instructor on a race track in Australia. He will be crowned the Porsche Super Cup Champion for 2013…posthumously. These were experienced drivers, and being a race fan, that crash shook me, like this crash shakes Walker’s fans.

How sad for all involved. I love cool cars, but not at a time like this.

re: #10 ObserverArt

Are you sure about this part?

Most daily drivers are engineered to be “over steer” which is the safest dynamic for the every day driver.

I understood most cars are engineered to understeer, that is, the car tends to follow a larger radius circle without additional driver input. Since most drivers automatically turn the steering wheel more in the direction of a turn, understeer is safer than oversteer. In an oversteering car, as in a rear-engine configuration, the driver has to turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction of the turn, which is not intuitively obvious unless you are a trained driver of rear-engine cars. Compensating the wrong way in oversteer situation will lead to the rear end snapping around and a bad spin — or worse.

That was one of the safety problems with the Chevy Corvair. On the other hand, classic VW Beetles rarely went fast enough to oversteer in turns, despite their rear-engine configuration.

Ugh. You are correct. I got my over/under messed up. As I said, just waking and still foggy. Thanks for the correction. It sort of blows my whole car nut thing making that mistake. I’ll go flog myself now. Where I screwed up was thinking “over” meaning that you need to keep steering, just as you stated and under meaning little input. I should know better, but I was in a hurry to make my points. Double ugh.

Dems are associated with “urban” voters down here, you hear it A LOT. But they know this already, they just enjoy lying for sport.

I know, but ‘dudebro’ is a term used to describe those who support people like Julian Assange and Glenn Greenwald. So that redundancy was not only accepted at the time the word was formulated, it was welcomed.
