In 25 years the GOP will proudly state that they were for gay rights and National Health Care.

I guess technically it could mean “her role in the ongoing struggle to end racism.”

Nevertheless, the problem is that GOP appears to believe that there should be no gov’t role in combating racism. Hence that there should be no Civil Rights Act etc. Hence that actions like that of Parks are all we need. Hence that they are sufficient. Hence any gov’t intervention is “reverse racism.”

That’s a feature, not a bug. 40+ years of the GOP appealing to the bigots to win elections will do that.

Nothing more stupid than a bunch of ignorant white reality challenged idiots saying to the non-white people that racism is over.

I’ll declare racism over after thorough consideration of my fellow non-white citizens. Till then, statements about racism being over are at the very least the spoutings of morons, but more likely passive aggressive incitements both against minorities and for other ‘white whiner’ antagonists to propagate on Twitter and Facebook.

Does not apply when you don’t count a whole group as “men” (humans).

And yes, it was and still is that stupidly simple. Just think of the names that were used and how they all counted as considering the group as other than human man.

We have skinks here in eastern Kentucky. Their tails usually are pretty long, but when they get scared they can pop off their tails. Since the cats like to chase the skinks, it’s not uncommon to find wiggling disembodied skink tails on the porch and skinks with stumpy tails.
The tails grow back, so future “fun” can continue.

The ‘I have a dream’ speech was about having that goal. The tactics were more focused on the legal sanctions to discrimination when Rosa took a seat on the bus. Shorter-term goals broadened later to include labor organizing and ending the war in Vietnam. The dream should always stay as the overall goal.

I didn’t think the RNC’s revision to their message warranted a withdrawal of criticism of them, but I’m not hankering to see a bunch of racist tweets, either.

108 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce  Sun, Dec 1, 2013 12:19:07pm

A lot of people think that because they don’t feel hateful and bigoted about other races, that they are therefore not racist. There are lots of ways to be an ugly racist without being an obviously hostile, venomous hatemonger. You can (and most likely *do*) have racist assumptions and attitudes deeply ingrained into your perception of the world that have a profound effect on how you interact with other people. When you are lucky enough to recognize these things in yourself, it can be both humbling and encouraging. Humbling because you are suddenly, nakedly aware of how terrible your mind was, and encouraging because recognizing it means you are able to learn and grow. But it’s a constant struggle.

More Tax Cuts!!!

That is the only way that the federal government can help this country, we have been saying it 30 years now yet you nincompoops in Washington still don’t get it?

Sure it hasn’t worked yet, and has caused massive federal debt to build up, but that is only because the feds haven’t cut the taxes to zero yet!!!

Sleuth…I was hinting at the erotic and homoerotic art in many Greek works.

I had a book once that my very Catholic parents threw out when I left it at their house one summer between my first and second year in college. It was for art history class and as a art social study of the beauty in things considered risque. They did not understand, and I was out the cost of a book.

There were some very interesting Greek items in the book. Some of the patterns in the bands on some of the urns and vases had very subtle erotic of both types forming “coupling” patterns all around the band. Some of the larger images were, uh, quite detailed.

It also was a lesson that nothing is new under the sun, even if the religious types act like it is.

Roger Rodas, a competitor in Pirelli World Challenge, has been identified as the second victim in the fiery car crash that also claimed the life of “Fast and Furious” actor Paul Walker.

Rodas, 38, was driving a Porsche Carrera GT in Santa Clarita, California Saturday when the sports car slammed into a light pole and tree before bursting into flames, authorities and witnesses said. Rodas and the passenger, Walker, 40, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Paul Walker Dead: ‘Fast And The Furious’ Actor Dies In Car Crash

He had just left a charity event for his foundation as a passenger with his friend who was driving a 2005 Porsche Carrera.

Police said they found tire “burnout” tracks on the roadway including those made by a car doing more than one “Figure eight” power drift skid. The police stopped short of saying that the skid and burnout marks conclusively came from the Porsche but you kinda have to assume that they did.

Footage from the scene does show the utterly fragmented and crumpled remains of about half or two-thirds of the car wrapped around an implausibly small tree that is perhaps only 5 or 6 inches in diameter. However it also shows that an aluminum light pole was also knocked down before the car struck the tree.

The accident scene was only about 300 yards from the main entrance of the foundation charity event that Walker had just left. :(

I guess ice and snow and howling winds put an end to the tarp.
My Uncle spent a couple hours up there properly storing my boat.
I’m pretty sure he is shaking his head thinking, ’ That boy is no woodsman ’
I told him I bought a really cool black AK-63. He asked me what the hell I was going to hunt with a military assault weapon?

Co-founder of Tea Party Fort Lauderdale and Danita Kilcullen is absolutely losing it that the Log Cabin Republicans in Broward are actually having influence within the Republican party. In response to an email from Andy Eddy of the local Log Cabin Republicans, Kilcullen ranted:

We must fight with all we have… We must put pressure on the House like has never been seen before. I’ll be damned if I will ever be forced to hire someone with orange hair, body/neck/face covered with tattoos, multiple piercings, or a man in a dress… or for that matter, a demonstrative effeminate male or purposeful butch-looking female. The Log Cabins are the same lobbyist organization that has all but taken over BREC; and besides that, we have someone on the Board of BREC who is using her position to openly put pressure on some BREC members to stand for same-sex marriage

Four heaping spoonfuls of this dreck. Two heaping teaspoons of sugar. Chocolate sauce AND red velvet creamer added for flavor. It’s still a watered down, tasteless version of vending machine coffee.

I really need to go to the grocery store and buy real coffee again. Bleah.

This is why there exists such a thing as the French Press.

There is only one excuse for instant coffee—MREs.

Thrift stores can be your friend. I found a brand new Bodum french press (sold by Starbucks since their brand was also on the thing), 32 oz size, for $3. In fact, am drinking a cup right now (I use it in the afternoons and the electric drip in the am—bigger). I gave the Ikea press I also had scored at the thrift store for $2 to a friend.

I would use anything but Starbucks coffee in it, though. : )

The “Texans” name has a bit of history.
The original Texans were created by Lamar Hunt from the old AFL days (what are now the Kansas City Chiefs were originally the Dallas Texans), as well as the Houston team from the World Football League in the 1970s.

Really, there was only other one other team name that was listed in the name search in 2002 that wasn’t absolutely horrible - that being the Houston Apollos.

No they couldn’t. Bud Adams owned the name, colors, and logos for the Oilers and he wasn’t about to give them back to Houston, especially after the way he left the city. The Titans even retain all of the Oilers team records and heritage.

The Texans was the worst of the names they were debating for the team. IIRC, they had narrowed it down to a handful of names and that was one of them. Terrible choice.

That was never gonna happen; Bud Adams (RIP, you old bastard) controlled the Oilers name and its association with his team when he moved it up here to Tennessee. Quoth the Wiki:

Owner Bud Adams relocated the Oilers to Nashville, Tennessee, where they were known as the Tennessee Oilers for the 1997 and 1998 seasons. In 1999 Adams changed the team name to the Tennessee Titans, and the color scheme from Columbia Blue, Red and White to Titans Blue, Navy, and White. The new Titans franchise retained the Oilers’ team history and records, while the team name and colors were officially retired by then NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

Edit: Lidane beat me to it.

Migrant workers pay to get jobs making electronics

Sita Magar is a single mother of four who earns whatever she can wring from six goats and the muscle of a rented water buffalo. After paved roads end, it takes four hours to reach her farm along a trail where felled trunks, like twisted balance beams, span a raging stream. Even so, a recruiter feeding migrant workers into the global electronics industry found Magar in her mountainside Nepalese village last year. He convinced her to borrow more money than she’d ever seen, about $1,000, and pay him to get her daughter a position at a factory in Malaysia.

After a year, the girl was dismissed and sent home when a company-mandated pregnancy test came back positive, leaving the family still impoverished and with years of added debt.

Migrant workers recruited through such practices make electronic components that are critical to companies building defense and aerospace systems, medical devices, industrial technology and virtually everything else incorporating microchips and circuits, according to interviews with workers and supply-chain data compiled by Bloomberg.

Porsches are pretty light cars, you don’t down a light pole with one unless you’re moving really goddamned fast, and reports are they hit a tree first, so retaining enough energy to down the pole after that means they were really moving. Judging by the condition of the car the real miracle is that they didn’t kill anybody else. It’s hard not to conclude this was the result of inexcusably reckless behavior.

Russian Scientist Photographs The Soul Leaving The Body At Death

The timing of astral disembodiment in which the spirit leaves the body has been captured by Russian scientist Konstantin Korotkov, who photographed a person at the moment of his death with a bioelectrographic camera.

The image taken using the gas discharge visualization method, an advanced technique of Kirlian photography shows in blue the life force of the person leaving the body gradually.

According to Korotkov, navel and head are the parties who first lose their life force (which would be the soul) and the groin and the heart are the last areas where the spirit before surfing the phantasmagoria of the infinite.

In other cases according to Korotkov has noted that “the soul” of people who suffer a violent and unexpected death usually manifests a state of confusion in your power settings and return to the body in the days following death. This could be due to a surplus of unused energy.

Uh… Ooookaaay.
