CA Republicans Create Fake CA Health Exchange Site

Unbelievable
Politics • Views: 22,372

In today’s episode of Disgusting Things Republicans Do, Karoli at Crooks and Liars picked up on a flier about health insurance being mailed out by the California Assembly Republican Caucus, advising people to go to a fake version of California’s CoveredCA.com health exchange site.

The fake site is packed with anti-ACA articles and smears:

On their version, there are links to negative articles and twisted messages intended to sour people on signing up for health insurance before they ever land at the official health exchange site.

For seniors, this message:

Seniors on Medicare may not see changes immediately to their benefits or coverage. Down the line, however, the erosion and accessibility of care may become a problem.

To pay for other components of the Affordable Care Act such as expanding Medicaid and creating state health exchanges, Medicare providers will see rate cuts nearing $200 billion over the next decade. These cuts could potentially result in the exodus of doctors from the Medicare system and force Medicare recipients to find new providers, possibly facing longer wait times for care as that pool of doctors shrinks.

The absolute derangement of today’s Republican Party right there, in your face. Using outright dishonesty and trickery in a bizarre attempt to prevent people from getting health insurance is a new low, but I have confidence they’ll find a way to go even lower before long.

Probably not, because they aren’t trying to con anyone into buying fake health insurance from them. Its just an example of how desperate the Right is to keep the ACA from succeeding.

In California, Republicans just dropped below 1/3 of the state legislature (that is why California now has a budget and can pay its bills). You’d think the Republicans would be trying to figure out where they went wrong and how to get back to having a role in state politics. But no.

And like all other attempts it will fail as more people find out about it, and hopefully all it will do is turn more reasonable people against the GOP.

Desperation is pretty evident in everything that’s being done, both at the state and federal level, by the GOP and the supporters. Their entire ‘14 campaign platform is based on the idea that the ACA is a failure and Democrats are to blame. If the law actually succeeds, then they’re SOL.

So as I’m looking at this, it appears that the people involved have cut things very close to the line indeed, enough that I’d not be surprised to hear it’s under investigation.

I think it’s (barely) legal for California law. The problem is that the site is part of a federal umbrella and as such the misdirection possibly falls into federal law. And there, well, for over 200 years the federal government becomes very unhappy at people who do something that interferes with federal money and benefits.

They already run numerous fake abortion clinics in many cities that do not provide abortion services. Usually* they simple try to counsel the prospective mother against choosing abortion in favor of adoption. They also rely heavily on religious guilt as a major tool to browbeat prospective mothers.

If you can run a fake abortion clinic then why not a fake health insurance site?

(*There was one notable exception where the fake clinic continued to delay and reschedule women for the procedure until it was simply too late for them to get a legal abortion under state laws.)

BREAKING: House renews ban on plastic guns

The U.S. House voted Tuesday in favor of extending the ban on undetectable firearms, including all-plastic guns, for another 10 years.

After 10 minutes debating bill H.R.3626, sponsored by Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC), the majority of the house voted in favor of renewing the Undetectable Firearms Act. The law requires that all guns be detectable by metal screening machines. It was set to expire next Monday.

With the introduction of 3-D printed guns, there has been a renewed debate on undetectable firearms. However, the one-sentence bill simply requires that the 25-year ban be rewritten to read 35 years.

“This ban on undetectable weapons has been in effect since 1988 and from all indications, the law is working well,” Coble said in a statement. He added, “The fact that today’s reauthorization passed by voice vote proves that there is overwhelming bipartisan support for this law.”

Now we’ll see if the Senate passes the renewal or if Sen. Schumer tries to play games with it.

As a liberal in Texas, I’ll say my personal observations mesh with the article.

The antis are getting shriller in public. At the same time you can hear discussions in coffee shops and such.

I think the biggest kicker is that pretty much everyone knows - and likes - someone who could get medicaid were it not for this foolishness. It’s PERSONAL - and the people who can’t get it aren’t quietly curling up in corners to die.

It also helps that now that the signup computers are up over 95% of the time a lot of Texans are quietly logging onto the health system and discovering that what they’ve been told is a lie. As the article says, they’re getting plans that are as good or better than what they had and for the vast majority (over 3/4, maybe more) it is costing them less.

The truly ugly thing for Texas Republicans here is that because they didn’t do what Kentucky did and make their own with their own name the Texans getting on aren’t saying “give me kykare instead of that [expletives deleted] Obamacare.” They know it’s Obamacare, not TexCare or the ACA. And public denial or not…

it’s not the Democrats trying to take away their new health care.

It may play in 2014. I didn’t think so, but I also thought the Texas GOP would withstand the onslaught longer. I am certain, however, that it will be a major issue in 2016. Especially if the GOP candidate has to publicly hold the “get rid of Obamacare” position.

Might as well publicly say “end Medicare.” Actually, might as well start looking for their new day jobs.

Going forward, the GOP’s playbook is going to be a sight to behold where it concerns the ACA. They have no alternative, publicly refuse to offer one, and people are not just going to roll over and decide that things were “better” under the previous status quo in the event that a repeal effort is a success. If anything, the round-the-clock focus on the “horror stories” and so forth is only going to highlight the problems with “for profit” health care in this country.

So, my wife & I lose our state health insurance on Jan 1 so I’m looking at The Website and am amazed at just how shitty even silver level plans are. Gold is almost acceptable - but danged if I can figure out how the subsidy applies to the $1000 a month at that level. Our son is still covered by the state for $10 a month, Thank God (and I say that sincerely). But even with just the two of us, the deductibles are impossible to pay.

We need single payer in this nation and we need it now.

48 calochortus  Tue, Dec 3, 2013 2:23:58pm

Can someone explain this to me?

I checked out what the good folks at FR had to say about the Supreme Court not hearing the Liberty University challenge to the ACA. Amongst the comments there was some discussion of how it was all Justice Roberts’ fault, and someone is blackmailing him because he’s gay.

Never mind the general level of fail here-if it were true, and he’s married and has a family, then conservatives would say he’s doing the right thing. Presumably the liberals don’t care one way or the other. What possible leverage could anyone have?

I think the fine folks in Wisconsin are going to be none too thrilled with paying double digit percent more than their neighbors to the north in MN. Walker might be loved by his Con base, but everyone, every single person in every single state, is going to vote on their own economic worth, and finding out that they are paying much more for health insurance then a neighboring state is eventually going to trickle down to the lowest of low information voters.

And it is not going to end well for the GOP.

Since the topic is ACA, I’ve got a personal aspect that hasn’t been brought up here yet.
MrB_S and I have IBEW union Lineco health insurance. We pay 100% of the premiums. Even though the dental part is total crap coverage, the rest is considered a “Cadillac plan”, and I suppose it is. For example, I had an MRI in January and our total out-of-pocket cost was about $100, compared to husband’s well over $2,000 cost a few years ago when we had no insurance.
Anyway, at last month’s union meeting, the business agent was trying to explain that we’d all have to pay a fee/tax because it’s a “Cadillac plan”.
Hubs was astounded at the loud outrage and said, out loud, “This shouldn’t be a surprise to any of you. It was part of funding ACA right from the beginning. We have great insurance and the fee/tax/whatevah helps to pay for those who need subsidies. Is $90-something the first year (and it goes done in subsequent years) you are even going to notice? Some of you guys drop that much without thinking in the bars in a week or less. Start paying attention and quit getting your information from right wing radio and Fox.”

Kinda proud of him for speaking up.
And VERY chuffed that he has been listening to and retaining the information I’ve been giving him.

That’s been their M.O. since they failed to stop the law in 2010, sabotaging it in every way possible. There’s a lawsuit right now worming its way through the courts, trying to argue that since Roberts split the baby last year by allowing stating to opt out of building exchanges, folks living in states without exchanges shouldn’t be able to get subsidies to pay for policies bought through the federal exchange.

It might be fake, but there is no reason not to make it true. A big chunk of the OFA “BorderStates” project has spun off to become Battleground Texas. Another consideration is that even if your state declines to provide a health ins. exchange or expand medicaid you will still be paying the same federal taxes (or fines for not getting compliant insurance) as if they did.

That is going to be another big economic incentive with the taxpayers, but it won’t really become apparent to many people until the end of next year.

Sounds like the GOP’s up to their usual tricks, keeping it separate with perhaps eye towards extracting more “concessions” (read: budget cuts) in order to “offset” the cost. You know, along with the mandated time for them to pontificate at length about how an extension is a bad thing because welfare is bad, etc, etc.

re: #68 William Barnett-Lewis

Yep.

IIUC, we can get a $6,426 subsidy on the $7.814 a year we can be charged for silver (1,800 per person deductible & 20% co-pays after that - for example 20% of whatever a doctor’s office visit is. And I have to pay that at the time of the visit. Broke? No doc. Hooray for ACA!!!)

So, we can pay $1,388 a year for the privilege of paying through the nose all year in a death by 1000 cuts.

Most doctors will bill you for the copay if you cant pay that day.
I am sorry to hear that you are having issues finding a good plan, but honestly what you have cited doesn’t sound half bad.

We pay more than that for an employer based plan and we still have copays and deductibles as well.

What does your state’s Platinum look like? The real-world tradeoff is low monthly vs high deductible all the way through. Navigators can point that out to you, but can’t direct you towards one provider or another.

I guess the question is how much you will use your insurance? If you are relatively healthy, you would go for the high deductible and lower monthly.
If you have a pre-existing condition that requires many office visits and ongoing treatment, probably the other way around.

No matter what, you get all preventative check ups/procedures for free.

Is that 20% for a routine office visit or for urgent care, specialty, imaging etc? You’ll each get one routine preventative office visit for free, that’s built into the law. There’s also the out-of-pocket maximum that needs to be factored into any analysis, and the prescription coverage (generic vs. brand name cost to you.)

It sounds on the high side, but if you live in Wisconsin then it’s mostly the fault of Scott Walker and the Republican legislature. No Medicaid expansion there means exchange rates will continue to have to offset the unpaid ER care provided to indigent residents.

Pastor Jeremiah Steepek transformed himself into a homeless person and went to the 10,000 member church that he was to be introduced as the head pastor at that morning.

He walked around his soon to be church for 30 minutes while it was filling with people for service, only 3 people out of the 7-10,000 people said hello to him.

He asked people for change to buy food - no one in the church gave him change.

He went into the sanctuary to sit down in the front of the church and was asked by the ushers if he would please sit in the back.

He greeted people to be greeted back with stares and dirty looks, with people looking down on him and judging him.

What I’m getting here is that very young relatively poor families can opt for catastrophic plans on the open market, but we don’t consider it part of our qualified exchange. The rules are weird—we count Medicaid (which we haven’t expanded) and our version of S-CHIP as ACA Exchange, but not Medicare or VA, though we would try to move eligible people to those programs. AFAIC, if someone gets insured, it’s a score.

I saw that story earlier today. It would seem to fit what we know about Pope Francis, especially his humility and outreach. His media outreach and trying to get people to reconsider participation in the Church is all part and parcel of the outreach, and it can only benefit the Church in the long run.

Other popes have gotten out on the town because living under a microscope is a tough way to live - elected leaders, like Presidents, have the same kind of thing, with constant security and surveillance.

But he’s going out to minister. That goes a long way.

Pregnant Woman Suffers. You Won’t Believe Who’s to Blame.

Tamesha was only 18 weeks pregnant when her water broke prematurely. She rushed to Mercy Health—the only hospital within half an hour of where she lived. The hospital did not tell her then that she had little chance of a successful pregnancy, that she was at risk if she tried to continue the pregnancy, and that the safest course of care in her case was to end it. The hospital simply sent her home.

She came back the next day, bleeding and in pain, and again was turned away. Again, she was not told of the risks of trying to continue the pregnancy, or what her treatment options were. Tamesha returned yet a third time—by now suffering a significant infection. The hospital was prepared to send her away once more, when she started to deliver.

Tamesha’s baby died within hours of being born—at 18 weeks, it never had a chance.

Born in 907; loses his dad in 921 at age 13; in the same year his pagan mom has his Christian grandma strangled because she wants influence; by 924/925 he’s 18 and acting as king; 10 years later—at age 28—his brother allies himself with some nobles and Wenceslaus gets murdered on his way to church after an argument with said brother. I was pleasantly surprised by Obama’s 1st term foreign policy. The second term hasn’t been as good.

With Russia in mind, U.S. takes cautious approach on Ukraine unrest

The low-key U.S. response comes as Russia has lately been a U.S. partner in diplomatic deals involving Syria’s chemical weapons and Iran’s nuclear program.
….
Asked why his response has not been more forceful, Kerry said that Ukraine should be free to make its own choices but that the choice should be a true reflection of national will. Yanukovych, he said, has made a “personal decision” that his people do not support.

“Europe and Europe’s friends all declined to engage in a rather overt and, we think inappropriate, bidding war with respect to the choice that might or might not be made,” Kerry said. He did not call out Russia by name.

N. Korea’s treatment of American vet ‘bizarre’

North Korea’s detention of an 85-year-old American and former Korean War veteran is playing out against a high-level shakeup Tuesday as the country’s unpredictable young leader is apparently trying to consolidate power.

South Korean media, quoting the South Korean intelligence agency, reported that North Korean Kim Jong Un’s 67-year-old uncle — long viewed as a power behind the throne — has been ousted as vice chairman of the top military body and that two of his associates may have been executed.

North Korea has always been unpredictable but I thought they’d release that captured vet. I’m starting to think they may keep him and put him on trial. I suppose there’s not much we can do to prevent that.

Kind of impartial to Raising Arizona myself. It was pretty early in their career, but just a great comedy with some fine acting, lead by Holly Hunter’s cop married to criminal Nic Cage.

And I loved the subtle (for Coens) humor of The Hudsucker Proxy. Paul Newman was cool fun. Tim Robbins was perfect in his part IMO.

Its been awhile since I saw it, but I always thought Goodman’s character was bit of the devil if you know what I mean. And, in a way a manifestation of the hell Tuturo was going through writing “wrastlin’ stories” and not liking himself at all. Sure, he is called a murderer, but it is all happening to Barton’s “people” and Goodman always covers for him no matter what. Sort of a “deal with the devil” to get the script done, but a high price to pay.

Reminds me of reading about the history of the old Persian shahs—I’m talking BC/Persepolis era kings—those guys were something else. I don’t remember names right now, but if you pissed off one of them he’d have your teeth extracted and hammered into your skull. Ouch.

Another one got pissed of at corruption in his courts, so he had the chief justice put to death, skinned and then had the chief justice’s chair upholstered with it. Then he appointed the guy’s son to take his place and sit in the chair. Yeah, that cured the corruption problem. *gulp*

Come to think of it, that last one kinda reminds me of reading about how during all the pre-Y2K hysteria the Chinese had a brilliantly simple plan: The people in change of making sure airplanes were Y2K compliant would be put on planes in flight on New Year’s Eve so they’d be in the air at the stroke of midnight. Talk about an incentive to get it right.

I can’t remember how it was marketed, but I sort of remember it being a ‘tricky’ mention of violence. I think it was the reviewers and then the public that really drummed on all the violence but never came to grasp what and who was the violence. If you missed a key scene in the flick, I think you missed the whole movie. That is what I loved about it. Maybe 15-30 seconds and the whole plot message explained in all that “violence.” The ride in the plane with the two main characters was key too.

I too saw it after all the hub-bub over fighting clubs being formed and news/entertainment shows going on and on about the violence, but they missed the whole damn point of the violence. I need to see it again.

(Dancing around the message for those that might not have caught it and want to revisit.)

Gee thanks, Scooter, you corrupt bugger.

You are not limited to working through your state exchange. You can work directly with the insurance companies or brokers. Any new policy sold weather through the exchanges or not must comply with ACA requirements. You may find more options. This may be especially attractive if your preferred doctors or facilities are not working through the exchange insurance companies.

Sorry to hear about the less than fantastic choices available. Scooter has done nothing to help and as a result WI will pay more than most. You are correct we need single payer now. I realize this cobbled together Frankenstein was all we could get passed. In addition, at the time of the ACA debate, it would have been very unpopular to roil the insurance industry which employs millions. Which is the problem. All these pencil pushers contribute exactly zero to our nations needs for prosperity. These millions of insurance workers could be doing something more productive with their skills.

There are some canned ‘beef hash’ products that could be biologically workable, but the kashrut is as much in the handling.

It appears there was a product (“Loof”?) included in Israeli MREs that was essentially kosher beef spam. It may have been discontinued.

There may also be halal poultry versions, apparently? Google is being somewhat unhelpful.

instant coffee, creamer, john wayne bar broken up and melted remains the best use of MRE components I ever found.

Though they were far far far better than the C’s. No ham and lima beans or the beef & potato slices (track pads & road wheels. Ugh). Though I’ll admit to liking the spaghetti and the beans & weenies (hey, I was a tanker. That too, but just even in the sense of them seeing us eat the stuff could be a cultural issue. Spam was a weird thing to GI’s past and present. There’s an exquisite Willie & Joe cartoon of them being served SPAM at the front day in and day out. The Army had priority so it got the vast majority of the SPAM. So the Christmas package from home comes? SPAM. Because to the folks at home it was a rare delicacy that they had to save ration points to send over seas. I think by the time Maudlin drew the comic he understood the dynamic on both sides which made it all the more bittersweet.

The idea fit because its easy to imagine Bill Maudlin going with that theme. And in sober point of fact, I wouldn’t have known to correct you if that Sad Sack cartoon had not been reprinted in a book about World War II that I was given about 21 years ago.
