Exceptional Time-Lapse Video: Wyoming Wildscapes II

It was one hell of a journey during the fourteen months making Wyoming Wildscapes II, my second and final Wyoming related time lapse project. Had plenty of adventures while working on this. Lightning almost got me a couple of times this summer, gear froze up in the winter (literally), and broke a few times (don’t think most of the time lapse gear was meant for extended wilderness backpacking), all that fun stuff. Despite any minor set backs, this was without a doubt one of the most fulfilling personal projects I’ve ever undertaken. Saw some pretty amazing stuff along the way, this part of the country never ceases to amaze and surprise me.

Wow. That’s some serious photography/videography.

Makes me want to go back to Devil’s Tower and over to Yellowstone again. And again.

I’ll settle for the Tetons. Or anywhere within 100 miles of Yellowstone. It’s just some pretty awesome landscapes. Same thing with Southern Utah - fantastic landscapes, just the Red Rock variety.

Why did anyone ever think Eddie Murphy was funny?

Comedy is supremely subjective. If you don’t get why someone was considered funny even while those around you are laughing themselves silly it doesn’t mean they’re not funny. It means they’re not funny to you.

Example: the three stooges bore me silly. Buster Keaton was funny to me.

And in the days before he became a paid stooge for the mouse Eddie Murphy was funny - to me.

Costco tried using self-scanners. They couldn’t hack it against the well-paid employees who work the front end at Costco. Trained cashiers work faster and more effectively than a line of customers who need to rely on some store employee to override or fix one of their errors, or who has issues with scanning, etc.

So no, minimum wage increases aren’t going to eliminate cashier jobs. Costco is proof of that.

Don’t need to be that far into it. Federal campgrounds around here contract with retired couples to serve as yearly camp ‘managers’. in practice, that’s not a lot more than keeping their RV at the gatehouse, collecting fees, and keeping the phones manned 24/7. Doesn’t pay much, but it’s year-round camping.

Upon retirement (which is still a long long time off, unless Powerball or Mega Millions beckons), I’m figuring of either volunteering at one of the National Parks, or going to work as a ranger. Anything to spend time in the parks.

Yep. We see them out here in CA too.

Of course, I am in theory a ways off from retiring. Someday. After I get a job.

Sorry, but “why did you ever think he was funny” is as ridiculous a question as “why do you like garlic?” (or liver, or chocolate, or any of a host of other things that some like and others despise.) There is no grand unifying theory of humor.

That said, for me Murphy’s funniest routine was the ice cream routine. I still laugh when I listen to it.

I’d honestly even consider working one of the service contract jobs at Yellowstone, as a summer season position. There’s some shot at access to employee housing, which can be very difficult/expensive for volunteers. No good long-term camping rates available for them.

Of course, what would be really awesome is a job that I could take on the road and being able to travel *now* and work a flexible schedule instead of having to put it all off until retirement.

Every time I would shop at Wal-Mart back in the day, the self-scanners were rarely used and the lines at the regular cashiers were long. Why? Because most of the time the self-scanners were busted, or people didn’t want to take the time and scan an entire cart full of groceries. Or they didn’t want to wait for whoever was in line at the self-scanners, since each person would take ages to ring up the few things they were buying.

I laugh at the idea that a self-scanner is going to replace human cashiers anytime soon. Whoever tries that will be putting out Help Wanted signs real quick.

So do you purchase things online? And when you do, do you use the automatic system or do you call in to have a clerk help you?

I’m a little questioning of the Costco anecdote. Oh, I know they tried it. I also recall when they tried it, and since libraries were being stuck with the systems around the same time I’m going to guess it was more a problem of adopting too early - that, and taking too big a bite of that apple. A balance of self-serve and assisted works best, with the trick being to figure out where that balance might be.

re: #35 kirkspencer

I don’t think it won’t ever happen, but I’ve used the automatic scanners at Home Depot and I’ve used them at the grocery store. They’re OK at HD, but unless I’m only buying 3 items at the grocery store (and how often do I do that?) AND there’s no one in line ahead of me at the do-it-yourself checkout, I don’t use them there. Not worth the time and trouble. It’s faster to go through the regular checkout, even if there are a couple people in line ahead of me.

Edit: and buying produce is a serious nuisance at the grocery self-check out.

re: #35 kirkspencer

That’s not even close to the same thing. If I buy something from Amazon, it’s not comparable to going grocery shopping at Whole Foods or Wal-Mart. Amazon’s system is designed to be highly regimented on the back end so that a customer really doesn’t have to think when placing an order. You find what you want, put it in a virtual cart, and check out instantly. If there’s an issue, they’ve got a pretty solid return policy.

Try doing that with a shopping cart full of groceries. It’s not that simple.

But to scoff and say never is, I think, as unwise as the people who said we’d never fly, or have cell phones, or see computer games go anywhere, or, well, a host of other technological wonders we now take for granted.

There will always be a human component to the self-scanners in a grocery store because of human error. An item won’t scan properly, or there’s no barcode, or the customer can’t figure out how to work the machine, or they’re going impossibly slow for everyone in line behind them. And that doesn’t factor in if they’ve got kids running around that they need to manage while checking out, or printer issues with receipts, or whatever.

huh. Who peed in your oatmeal?

And to be a bit more serious, where the F* do you come off telling anyone else what they can and cannot like? Who appointed you the God of Taste, and why should I bother to care?

I said it’s subjective. It’s personal. Tastes differ, and they change, but I will dmn well not allow you to arbitrate what I should and should not like because you don’t like it.

Yes, self scan is in a lot of ways like online shopping for the checkout. Amazon may have it down, but a lot of other places have the occasional glitch. And the simple fact is that in both cases you’re taking the clerk out of the picture.

I think you’re also making an error of thought. Because it doesn’t work (at this time) for scale A (a shopping cart of groceries) does not mean it won’t work for a small basket - especially if the store uses proper queueing techniques and stays up on scanner maintenance. Which I know from personal experience does, indeed, work most of the time. (I need to point out the joy of standing in line with a clerk who’s machine has developed problems, or who has a customer who wants to argue price, or any of several other problems also creates a huge backlog. Your problem is not unique to self-scan.)

It works pretty well if you use one of those little mobile scanners that you can bring around the store with you and scan stuff as you put it in the cart.

If I have less than 20 or so items I usually self-check. The exceptions are when the object I have is so light the scale won’t pick it up or when I’ve got something that’s going to require extra effort (if I’m price-matching store ads, or if I’ve got something ungainly or heavy).

I will note that the longer I’ve done it the faster I’ve become. With practice noting where the barcode is and getting it in about the right spot becomes almost automatic.

Those are pretty neat. Scanning stuff as you put it in the cart slows you down a little bit, but getting to the register and ringing it all up at once is cool.

I normally use self-checkout, especially if there isn’t a line for but there is a line for the manned checkout line. Waiting might actually be more efficient, but its much more frustrating for me. I’d rather feel like I’m moving forward, even if it actually takes a minute or two longer.

It depends on the store. Some are good about placing the barcodes on the bin and labeling tools around. Some are terrible in any way and if I’ve got produce I divert to a clerk. Some have well designed search systems such that I can find my produce on a pull up screen fairly quickly. (type ‘peaches’. find mine. there we go.)

I tend to use the self scan when I’ve got only a few items. I have noticed that the scanners (and especially the technology that handles you putting it in the bag) has gotten much better over the years. I don’t like it if I have a full / semi-full bag cart, but for just a few things it seems quicker to me. Truth is, I walk along the line of registers, if there is one with just one person with a small load I’ll use the regular cashier.

Gaaaaaaaahhhhhhh! MOUSE!

I’m in bed watching a video on my iPad and have to go to the bathroom. I get up and my younger cat, the Baby, is lying in the hall in front of the bathroom door. Weird, she never lays there. She get’s up to move so I can pass and… MOUSE, she had a freaking mouse she was holding down, and now it gets up and runs towards ME… I curse, squeal… FUCK! EeeeeeeeK!! Baby re-catches mouse… other cat comes running… mouse plays possum… cats walks away…. mouse makes another run for it, gets caught again… gets loose again…. more shrieking from CL: “Get the mouse! GET THE FUCKING MOUSE!!!” Baby looks at me like, “Okay, take a chill pill—I’ve got this.” (BTW, mouse is one of the words they understand, from when we lived in New York.)

The other cat catches it. It gets loose and runs towards the closet. NOOOO! Gets caught and dragged back again… I throw a towel over it. It runs into the bedroom under the bed. SHIT! Baby retrieves it, other cat loses interest and decides to just sit & watch. I don’t want to leave it to them because if they badly injure it or kill it, it’ll probably end up somewhere where I won’t find it until it starts to rot and stink. SHIT! Stupid suicidal rodent!

I finally decide to get one of those plastic quart containers the Chinese restaurants sell soup in. Baby still has mouse… gets bored & lets it go… I miss it… Baby catches it again… I GOT IT!!… now the mouse is freaking out trying to get out and the cat thinks it we’re playing some kind of fucking shell game with with it. Gah! I run to find a piece of cardboard before she can tip over the container… grab the nearest junk mail postcard… slip it under the plastic container and carefully flip it over… mouse is freaking out, running in circles, cat is watching intently, just in case… I’m looking at it going, “Really? Really? Out of all the units, you had to pick the apartment with two cats in it??? I’ma get you outta here, but don’t come back.

I manage to get a window open…. lift the screen… toss it into the bushes… sayonara, mouse! I finally make it to the bathroom. As soon as I come out the Baby comes over to preen and accept the accolades she knows she’s due for her hunting prowess. I praise her and really wish I hadn’t quit smoking. The freaking adrenaline… Maybe if I go make a cuppa Joe… Yeah, I think that’s what I’m gonna do…

time and human resistance. As a rough analogy look at how long it took till (figuratively) everyone had a television in their home. Or owned a car.

82 klys  Fri, Dec 6, 2013 8:29:21pm

Another consideration, maybe less of a problem in other states but in CA at least: you cannot buy alcohol at the self-checkout.

In general, I use self-checkout when I have fewer than five things, providing none of them are produce. Otherwise I go through the cashier.

83 Feline Fearless Leader  Fri, Dec 6, 2013 8:29:31pm

re: #57 calochortus

So, those of you who self check, what do you do about produce? Around here it isn’t prepackaged, so there isn’t a bar code and not everything has a numbered code on it.

Wegman’s has scales with built-in barcode sticker printers in their Produce Section. You can pick out your produce, plastic bag it, and weigh and sticker it right there. Then it can be scanned at the check-out.

I tend to not use self-checkout. Usually as long a line there as the other check-outs and I like chatting with the cashiers.

Trader Joe’s I go to doesn’t have auto-check out. I usually buy less there though since I walk to and from the store. And I usually pack half the groceries myself into my canvas bags.

Safeway is horrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible about produce and code numbers. Forget barcodes. If you are careful, you can sometimes find one with the silly sticker on it.

I would go to our farmer’s market more often if it didn’t end at noon on a Sunday.

87 Kragar  Fri, Dec 6, 2013 8:31:22pm

If I’m picking up one or two things, I’ll use self check out. Anything else, I’m using a checker in case anything goes wrong and they need to fix something or look something up.

That must depend upon the market. Ours has a scale/barcode generator so you can look up a piece of produce, weigh it, and print a bar code for checkout. And if you don’t do that in the produce section, you can do it at the register upon checkout.

Not really. Touch screen, with divisions into fruit/veggies. Click into a side, and they’ve got neat little rows of pictures of fruit (or veggies). Find the one you’re buying, put it on the scale, press ‘print,’ bag it up.

We usually bag our stuff as we choose it, so weighing and printing the label isn’t that much more work.

re: #91 calochortus

Not really. Let’s say I want three yams. I pick them out and put them in a clear plastic bag (can twist tie, but I just tie the top of the bag.) The bin of yams is labeled with the price/lb and the 5-digit item #. I put the bag on the scale, type in the number, and hit “Print”. Out comes a sticky label with the bar code and other data. The scale also displays the weight, price/lb, and total price of the bag.

I also often buy loose tea there and it uses foil-lined envelopes and a similar system. With the scale off-set for the weight of the envelopes since you’re only buying a few ounces.

I think Safeway was subsumed in the Philly area into the Giant chain*. The one I remember from living near Pittsburgh was an older store and my 3rd or 4th choice for groceries after a local non-chain grocery and Giant Eagle.

* - I just recall a chain not called Safeway that had Safeway brand generics. That chain was bought by another chain around 2009, and I think Giant bought out those stores a few years ago. Wegman’s was available by then, so I wasn’t shopping there in any case by then.

Safeway is one of the least capable grocery store chains I have ever shopped at. They balance this out only by being about 5 blocks from the house.

There are three major grocery chains in the Dallas area currently (not counting “supercenters” like Wal-mart, Target and Costco):

Tom Thumb - originally independent, now under the Safeway umbrella. The most “upscale” of the major grocers - decent selection - and pricing if you have one of their “club” cards - and on weekends have some really nice sale items.
Kroger - possibly the oldest chain still under original ownership - not nearly as high visibility as in past, but still has decent number of stores. Outside of upscale neighborhoods, stores are a lot lower-scale than other chains. Also has club memberships, but overall prices are a bit higher.
Albertsons - I think they still have member clubs, but I don’t think they offer pricing discounts any more. Have closed several stores in area because they weren’t able to compete on pricing and selection - on par with Kroger with those.

There are other grocery chains with a bit of specialization - Whole Foods has a few stores for the so-called “organic” crowd - and is by far the highest-priced of any grocer in the area, two chains catering to the Hispanic community and one to the Asian (specifially Chinese and Korean) residents. Lots of imported items there, and the fresh fish selection in the asian markets is top-notch.

I’ve got two grocery stores in walking distance of my house. The first is a small meat market/grocery store that I shop at most of the time. They cater to a majority Latino customer base, wtih a butcher, fresh pan dulce, and a small counter where you can buy fresh made soups, tacos, and plated meals. They even have several booths where people sit and eat. It’s a tiny store and has two cashiers. That’s it. No self-check at all.

The second is a mid-size HEB that I go to for larger items or if I need to do a full restock of the fridge and pantry. It doesn’t have self-scanners and even if it did, checking produce would be a pain in the ass.

Currently 25 in Dallas, expected low of 12-14. Compounded by the 1-2 inch sheet of ice covering the area from last night’s ice storm. Tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon, we are forecast for 1-2 inches of snow on top of it.

To top things off, if I wasn’t cold enough, the contractor I’ve been working with has decided he REALLY wants to relocate me for a relatively well-paying position for a minimum of a year and a half (with possibility of permanent).

I feel like I might be a little under-qualified for the position (they want someone who is hardcore with Oracle SQL - I know my way around it, but I’d be lying if I said I had a high comfort level). The payscale is about 10-15K/year higher than what I’ve been making locally - but the contractor is sounding like they want to be tight-pocketed on relocation expenses.

I’ll just say that I’m interested, but they need to make things a bit more attractive to get me to uproot after living here for 20-plus years.

It’s not really a family thing or anything - most relatives are over 400 miles away already, and we don’t really stay in touch that much, and I’m single/no kids so don’t have any of those responsibilities. I’m just familiar with the area and the primary circle of friends are all nearby.
That being said, Michigan is one of the few states that I would be amenable to relocation to if needed (along with New England states and the Pacific NW), so its more an issue of the hassle of actually having to move than anything.

Everything within three miles of the Capitol building will be gentrified within the next five years. Bouldin, my ‘hood, is losing its cultural mix with the death of each abuela in the ‘hood. The grandkids can’t afford the taxes and have to sell. They scrape the bungalows and put up monstrosities on small lots. I hate it, but my house is paid off and this is my home, dammit.

Anybody else out there paying $700 a month in property taxes on a house they paid $125,000 for? That’s what happens when you don’t have a state income tax in Texas.

In CA, we have Prop 13 instead.

And why hello there, state income tax. And sales tax. And…

But at least our property taxes are on the lower end of things.

Scott Tipton is my congressman, and he’s been kind of so-so when it comes to the Tea Party. He’s not totally beholden to them like other congresscritters often mentioned at LGF, but he agrees with a lot of the GOP shit along the lines of AGW, the ACA, “religious liberties,” tax structure, the role of the federal government, the list probably goes on.

Scott Walker orders flags lowered to half-staff to honor Nelson Mandela

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has ordered flags lowered to half-staff in memory of Nelson Mandela.

In a statement, Walker says Mandela was “an inspiring man, who stood as a distinct symbol of hope in the anti-apartheid movement.”

Walker also says Mandela unified South Africa as its first black president. The governor says the courage and bravery Mandela exhibited “in the face of injustice inspired not only his nation, but also the world.”

I’ve worked in a grocery store and a home improvement store. I know what it’s like to be treated badly both by employers and by customers who tend to think you’re a dumb ass who couldn’t be employed anywhere else—those jobs were after I had worked 20 yrs as a legal asst and 35 yrs doing some kind of office work, was in my 50s, and tired of that rat race. Employees don’t like the “self checkout” anymore than the customers do. At one grocery store which tried SCO, a clerk was posted at the exit to check receipts and to make sure customers didn’t try “sliding” groceries w/o paying for all of them.

I never use them. I figure I’m doing job protection for employees by not doing so. They like that attitude; they know it might be a shitty job they have, but it’s a pay check and better than none, although it’s sad that corporate “culture” has evolved to the point that people are just numbers and there’s little humanity considered in that kind of employment anymore; they’re generally treated like replaceable parts in a machine.

I never fail to say “thank you” to a clerk anywhere—grocery store, fast food, drug store, you name it. And if I get a little testy about company policy or its procedures, I make sure I tell the person I’m talking to that it’s not them, it’s the company that I’m pissed off with, that he or she doesn’t make the “rules” that upset me.

I started working at age 14 in a “five & dime” on Fri night and all day Sat for a grand sum of $4.50 take-home. You were assigned to a “counter”, actually surrounded on all 4 sides, and had a cash register, had to stock and keep the counters presentable and take care of customers—it made a 14 yr old kid feel responsible and important in the scheme of things. It was not “self service” like everything is today; there were no carts and you didn’t roam the stores picking up what you wanted and taking it to the front. The cash registers were manual and you had better know how to count, add, subtract, etc. Handling money and accounting for it led me to take bookkeeping courses in HS—I thought I would eventually become an accountant, but by that time, more business schools were opening, and I couldn’t afford college anyway so I got married. Accounting was starting to change, with specialties like cost accounting, forecasting, etc. and here we are today—the bean counters and bottom line have taken over everything, even human beings. “Human resources” has become just a fancy extension of the old purchasing clerk.

Our Five and Dime around here was Drew’s. They still have a store but back in the day they we’re a big name in town.

We actually had 3 in Charlotte: WT Grant (more of a cross between a 5&10 and a dept store actually), Kress (the most popular and in a prime location—right on “The Square” which is the crossroad of Trade and Tryon Sts—Bank of America is on that spot and NCNB before that), and McLellan, where I worked, on the first block of N. Tryon St. The McLellan store was older and actually had hardwood floors. They eventually merged with McCrory stores in 1958.

BTW, if you were a teen back then, you listened to WGIV for the best music. Chatty Hattie and Genial Gene were the best DJs at the time.

Newlywed ‘thrill killers’ lure man and murder him for fun, cops say

According to Sunbury police, Elytte Barbour told investigators he hid in the backseat of the couple’s SUV as his wife picked up LaFerrara at a mall on Nov. 11. He told police that, on his wife’s signal, he wrapped a cord around LaFerrara’s neck, restraining him while Miranda Barbour stabbed him.

Barbour said his wife made anywhere from $50 to $850 for meeting with men for such activities as having dinner or walking around a mall. The ads she placed on websites including Craigslist all said upfront that sex was not part of the deal, he said.
“She is not a prostitute,” he said.

Pretty good here on the TN-KY border. Didn’t get any snow, just a very light icing on the trees. Going to be about 30 today, looking at lows down around 12-14 degrees later this week.

When I was in the Army, I was stationed at an airfield in the interior for a year. We had 2 weeks straight where it didn’t get UP TO -20 F for a high, and a month straight where we didn’t see 0 for a high. Also, the coldest free air temp we had that winter was -62 degrees. Total snowfall at the airfield over the winter was 115 inches.

Yea, I can handle this.

My granddaughter’s grooming business is going pretty strong. She had a Yorkie at her house the other day when we visited. Said its hair was very matted, so she had to get rid of it. But instead of completely shaving the dog, as most would do, she was able to leave about an inch of hair on her, so the poor thing didn’t look scalped.

She’s a bit peeved, however, at customers who call and make appts only to find out she lives in a “trailer” and then cancel. But she is a very caring animal lover who takes good care of Other People’s Pets and is an excellent groomer. As soon as she can save enough to get some capital, she is going to rent a place in a strip mall or something similar and make it more than a home business. Right now, though, she can be home working while her son is in K, and not have to be on someone else’s schedule, as she was in a pet store. Plus, she gets the entire fee, not just a small portion of it.

The economy must be picking up, because the pet grooming business seems to be booming, after an earlier lull.

re: #240 Justanotherhuman

My old hairdresser had her shop in a strip mall. For years, she shared it with a barber shop and a dog groomer. She said the dog groomer, by far, made the most money.

Walmart Employees, Bank Tellers and now Fast Food Workers.

How long before the voters realize we are subsidizing corporate profits from the bottom and the top (tax credits) —while the board room to D.C revolving door is spinning.

WHO IS REALLY GETTING THE BENEFIT OF PUBLIC MONEY?

Employers who pay so poorly that their employees need public assistance should be billed annually for the full cost of all assistance - medical, food stamps, section 8 housing - all assistance. They need to have to pay the full cost of their labor and not be subsidized by the taxpayer.

If they truly didn’t have the funds to pay employees more, we would see it in other areas of the corporate balance sheet. I know the salaries & bonuses of the people at the top wouldn’t amount to much if divided by all the low level employees, yet, it’s the additional monies paid to the lobbyists and political contributions that make me really want to scourge their books.

OTOH, do top level execs really have to earn 8 figure salaries? Or traders and investment bankers who actually just inflate the stock and bond markets?

Ahhh…self serve checkout.

I try I really do, especially at the one Lowes nearest me. But every damn time there is an issue. Things like 2 bags of Quickcrete. You really want me dripping concrete powder and small stones all over this thing and then throw in on this little spinning plate to weigh it? Call Attendant over…wait, he is busy with some else who is having issues.

The other day…3 different bags of caulk backing rod. Anyone familiar with caulk backing? Yep, polyethylene foam snakes in a bag. 3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8” x 10’ long. Total weight of the first bag…nothing. Won’t register a weight. Call attendant over, he comes over hits a ‘button’ on screen I didn’t understand was for this use: ignore weight to continue. Button read: Ignore weighing for this item. Don’t remember that option in the past.

Hmmm. They probably put that button on there after the guy that dropped two bags of Quickcrete on the weight plate ‘cuz he was getting pissed and wanted to break the whole damn thing! Sorry about all that powder. You’re gonna have to clean that up.

Or, it might have been that time he tried to scan a shovel where the store put the scan bar in a place that no matter how you configured the shovel you couldn’t scan it. Call the attendant over.

And every time something like this occurred to me, it was because I needed to get in and out…they had one attended cashier line open and five or more people with shopping carts full of Quickcrete, shovels and bags of nothing!

What are you gonna do? Modern problems. They fix ‘em and create new. Keeps people in a job.

Reading some more comments above brings up another shopping issue/store decision.

Express Lanes…12/15 items or less.

At my local Kroger a guy hurriedly moved in front of me with way more than ‘express’ and they took him, processed him and moved along. Me up next…I ask why not simply tell the guy it is store policy and he needs to go to one of the other lines? They told me they do not want to hassle the customer it can lead to issues. I said you are hassling me and I have an issue. Also, why do you even have the sign and designated lane? They say to speed things up? I say, well by taking the guy with 30 things you are not speeding things up, going against your own policy and upsetting other customers. She said she wasn’t busy and they are to take them. I said that is unfair to the people that will walk up to use the express line, like me.

Manager comes over (must have overheard a bit) and asks if there is a problem. I look and see other people coming into the express line, I say hold on I don’t want to delay these other nice customers due to your stores problems. I pay as the manager gives me disgusted look and walks away like I am being a problem. I pay, walk out the door…put the stuff in my car, go back into the store and hunt the manger down. He is not happy to see me. I calmly told him my issue and suggested to him that the next customer he looks at like the customer is being an unnecessary problem might just want to punch him in the mouth. Me, all I want is your name so I call the head area manager or corporate to explain further.

I walked out with an apology and a promise it won’t happen again. I didn’t want to call anyone above him, but I did want to send a message.

I didn’t set the store policy. If you have a policy, enforce it and do your job.

Me too. Digging deeper into the matter is no small Google search and scan. When a wind farm got hit with a big penalty recently, I noticed a lot of the money goes to the government, rather than addressing the problem. That is wrong. When $$ penalties fill gaps in budgets, the violator just becomes a weird kind of taxpayer. When they go to resolve the problem, it’s better spent.

For you math geeks..

If you enjoy Pi Day (3/14) and Avogadro’s Number Day (10/23), then get this: today is a Pythagorean triple date.

You’d have to be a serious math nerd to recognize that the sum of the squares of 5 and 12 equals the square of 13. Which is exactly what the co-founders of the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) noticed.

So, along with some 2,000 fellow math geeks and museum staff, MoMath co-founder Cindy Lawrence will help surround the most well-known right-triangle-based edifice in the country — New York’s Flatiron Building — and execute a glow-stick proof of the ancient Greek mathematican’s famed theorem.

I’ve got a book on them. Some late ones flew anti-sub missions into 42 in the Caribbean even though officially obsolete. Mostly places where there was a snowball’s chance of a german actually showing up because they were slow dog aircraft. Taught a generation what they’d need to handle real bombers (B-25, B-26, A-20, etc) but not much use otherwise.

Why do people think leash laws only apply to other dogs? I was walking the Greyhounds this morning, and when I got to one of the little parks nearby, there was a pair of Pit Bull-looking dogs, off-leash about 40 yards away. Each of ‘em about 90 lbs. Two guys walking them. One came when called to be leashed, the other starts trotting toward us, not responding to being called.

“He’s a puppy”, one of the guys yells.

“You know there’s a leash law.” I respond.

“He’s a puppy!” the guy repeats.

“So?”

Seriously, they don’t know my dogs. For all they know, my dogs might be killers, and their ‘puppy’ might be in deep shit if he gets too close. And I certainly don’t know THEIR dogs! Everyone thinks THEIR dog is a perfect angel, till he attacks somebody else’s dog, or worse, somebody else.

Oklahoma Earthquakes, Earthquake Hazard

On average there are about 50 measurable earthquakes each year in Oklahoma with only a few of these with shaking strong enough to be felt. 2009 was an exceptional year for seismic activity in Oklahoma with 43 felt earthquakes with 27 of those occurring in Oklahoma County. The Oklahoma Geological Survey has been running seismograph stations in partnership with volunteers since 1961. Since 1977 there have been more than 1,800 earthquakes located in Oklahoma.

The earliest documented earthquake in Oklahoma occurred on October 22, 1882, and while it cannot be precisely located, the strongest shaking, Modified Mercalli Intensity of VIII, was reported at Fort Gibson, Indian Territory. On April 9, 1952 the largest instrumentally recorded earthquake in Oklahoma occurred near El Reno in Canadian County. This earthquake had a magnitude of 5.5 and caused damage to the State Capitol Office Building in Oklahoma City. Its effects were felt as far away as Austin, Texas and Des Moines, Iowa.

The 1811 and 1812 New Madrid, Missouri, earthquakes were also felt in Oklahoma. For a more complete list of significant earthquakes in Oklahoma please visit the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Oklahoma History. earthquake.usgs.gov

re: #347 The War TARDIS

Not really.

news9.com

“I think with the latest slate of earthquakes,” said Corporation Commissioner Dana Murphy, “there really weren’t any disposal wells any closer than, I think, six miles.”

At the Oklahoma Geological Survey, research seismologist Austin Holland says the earthquakes are just too far from any active wells.

“And so there’s no reason at this point to think [the earthquakes] are induced,” Holland said, in a phone conversation this afternoon.

But the Corporation Commission also passed along data on lake levels at Arcadia — data that certain got Holland’s attention.

Normal water volume at Arcadia Lake is about 30,000 acre feet, but last June it spiked to 57,000 acre feet — almost double the volume, and thus also the weight.

A graphic produced by the Corporation Commission shows a spiking water level in red, and the recent spike in seismic activity in blue, and they mirror each other almost exactly.

This is why I carry pepper spray everywhere I go. I won’t spray a dog on a leash or on his own property. All others are fair game, although I only spray if they approach me. Of course. I’d rather spray the owners, but I like to sleep in my own bed.

I just went out to start up the Jeep which hasn’t run for about 2 weeks.

I froze my nads plugging it in last night so that it would be warm enough to start this morning. Boy was I wrong.

It didn’t even hint at turning over, so I threw the battery charger on it. The little light on the charger turned from yellow to green in about 3 seconds. The frikken battery is frozen. So, frozen nads and all, I yanked it out and brought it into the house.

But to trust any unknown dog means you have to trust the judgement of a complete stranger, to know whether their dog can be trusted in all situations without any means of control.

There was an awful attack back in 2001 in SF, where a pair of Presa Canarios attacked a woman in the hallway of an apartment building, pursued her into her apartment as she tried to escape, and killed her. Right up till that happened, the owner thought they were perfect angels.

I have some anti-bear spray. I can promise you that will stop the biggest meanest dog in it’s tracks. I’ve tested it on a bike tour in central Kentucky, where dogs are born and bred to chase (and possibly consume) riders.

Different area, different experience. I grew up with all kinds of dogs (mother’s kennel) and I have never been in a situation I felt I couldn’t handle. Actually, I’ve always related better to dogs than people. Spraying them with pepper is something I would never consider, but I can see how you might feel it necessary.

I’m satisfied (usually) with just turning them around. I fear blow-back from the strong stuff. Also, I find that dismounting (keeping the bike between my self and the dogs) and picking up a rock is sufficient to turn them around at a greater distance than the pepper spray can reach. If that doesn’t work, then I throw the rock. The baddest dogs react to the picking-up.

When I was in alaska, every car had a block heater, an oil pan heater, a battery heater and usually a transmission pan heater. They all come out to an extension cord coming out your grill. Every parking spot had outlet, and you would just plug it in when you parked. It was great, car would start right up, and warm air came out of the vents. :)

We also had about 1/2 the radiator covered with a sheet of cardboard, at -20 overheating while you’re driving isn’t a real concern. You actually had to block off about 1/2 the radiator, or you coolent wouldn’t get up to temp while driving.

RBS

We have plugins all over the place here too. Having a block heater that works and a battery blanket makes a hell of a difference. I’ve actually stuck a small indoor heater, or a 100w bulb under the hood on occasion when I wasn’t sure my block heater was working.

re: #391 b_sharp

The block heater does little to keep the battery above freezing below say -25C. Every car up here is sold with a block heater. What they really need are battery blankets. (yes they do exist and no they are not fuzzy or cute)

Whoa..What is -25C? You know..In American Temp.
I used to get so frustrated in Europe..Television would say it’s going to be 25C today. What the hell does that mean? I know..I know..But who is going to Google the difference when hanging in Europe? Open the door and figure it out I guess.

Yes I know, but I wanted a spun joke, so I redirected it to the metric/imperial debate.

/sheepish look.

I did read a webpage once that argued that the metric system was ‘un-biblical’, since leaders were appointed by God, and the length of the yard was set by the outstretched arm of Henry I. (highly suspect however). By their reasoning, imposing the metric system was going against god’s law.

I haven’t decided if it was sincere, or a great example of Poe’s law.

I’ve done the lightbulb trick here in TN when it’s getting down in the low teens / single digits. I also hook up a small little trickle type charger to just keep the battery nice a warm.

And as for Minnesota, diesels are all sold with block heaters as far as I’m aware, but most gas cars aren’t. Battery blankets aren’t unheard of, but by and large, you’re expected to just keep your battery well-maintained and put a nice lightweight oil in it for your last oil change before winter. Jumper cables are also a requirement, though as with anything else, you’d be surprised how many people try to skate by without them.

Become famous by the gun, die by the gun:

‘Stand your ground’ man shot dead in Miami

Police told The Miami Herald that 26-year-old Greyston Garcia was killed late Tuesday by a stray bullet during a shootout between rival gangs. Garcia was shot in his truck while driving to work. A 16-year-old boy also died.

Police don’t believe Garcia was involved with the gangs.

Garcia in March successfully invoked the “stand your ground” law to win immunity from murder charges. Garcia claimed self-defense when he chased and fatally stabbed a radio thief who had broken into his truck. The man had swung a bag containing radios at Garcia.
