That intro that sounds like a whole band with Michael Brecker soloing on Electronic Wind Instrument? It’s just him.

One of the reasons I like the music posted here is because it’s so far outside what I generally listen to.

That’s great, it had me doing the “seat groove” thing. What most people don’t realize is that the EWI, over time, slowly evolved into what is currently the Holophonor.

One Track Mind: The Brecker Brothers ‘Song for Barry’ (1992)

A lot had happened during those intervening years. Miles Davis had come back from retirement, touring and making a final batch of new musicbefore passing away in 1991. Michael Brecker finally begun to record as a solo artist in 1987, and quickly followed up his brilliant debut with two more strong albums. And the so-called “contemporary” jazz that the Brecker Brothers’ music was sometimes lumped into morphed into “smooth” jazz. Would the brothers follow suit and smooth out any sharp edges to their music? The answer came swiftly on the first track of Return, “Song For Barry.”

On the surface, “Barry” has much of the same production earmarks of many smooth jazz songs of the early 90s: bright sound, synthesized drums up high in the mix and layers of the latest and greatest keyboards. There’s no mistaking that this is a song from 1992. But as the song’s composer, Michael brought the The Brothers the same inclination to draw inspiration from disparate sources as he had been doing for his solo music. A tribute to the then recently deceased Latin trombonist and former fellow Dreams band member Barry Rogers, Michael took the main melody from a horn pattern that Rogers was fond of, and even excerpted a trombone solo Rogers once did on an Eddie Palmieri album. And then just for rhythmic fun, Brecker threw in an adaptation of a Guinean tribal theme for a bass line.

That trombone solo mentioned in this quote is a real mind-bender, musically - very unusual phrasing. It starts at 5:30 - the band is playing the trombone solo, trading fours with Michael in a call-answer type thing.

I was reading up on that yesterday. Here’s Reagan’s speech on South Africa.

He wasn’t in favor of arparthied, he was angling for a controlled transition to free society with minimal violence. I still find it unfathomable that the country transitioned as peacefully as it did. It was a fucking miracle. I also opposed the lifting of sanctions on Libya but it played a large part in bringing down Q’Daffy. I was wrong. I also oppose easing sanctions on Iran but I might be wrong about that. I disagree with Obama but I don’t believe that he’s philosophically supporting Muslim theocracy. It would be an absurd accusation.

re: #58 Killgore Trout

Of course Reagan made statements condemning apartheid - politically, he had to. But he went much farther than opposing sanctions - he removed the sanctions Carter had put in place, and helped arm and fund Botha. Reagan’s actions speak much louder than his speeches, and he objectively helped the apartheid regime extend its lifespan.

What Reagan wanted was a fantasy, that the Afrikaners would choose to end apartheid without any pressure put upon them to do so. He wanted groups like ANC and men like Mandela to have no part in the transition, because Botha was whispering his ear that if America lent legitimacy to such “communist terrorist” groups, then Africa would undergo the same way of revolutionary takeovers that South America had undergone. Like Charles already noted, when push came to shove, Reagan supported apartheid because he saw it as the only viable option.

Botha gave a very public speech where he stated there would never be unified elections, a unified government, because he believed that instituting such would only lead to anarchy. He then instituted crackdowns and put the country under martial law.

Reagan’s response? To bluster about how he was disappointed, but he didn’t cut off supporting the regime. And when Congress took up economic sanctions, he vetoed them and had that veto overridden.

The Saudis are going to be a tough nut to crack. As much as I dislike the House of Saud I get the vibe that they’re more moderate than the society they rule. If free and open elections were to happen today I think it’s a safe bet they’d choose a theocracy led by clerics. Society is going to take a long time to change. Iran is a different story, the people are tired of the clerics and would prefer a free modern society. Once the mullahs are gone it should be an easy transition.

My dad is an expert on Chaucer. I know a very little about Chaucer.

Reagan supported the South African government during apartheid, even after they declared they would never give equal voting rights to blacks, even after violent, murderous crackdowns. Reagan also made the spectacularly false claim that South Africa had no segregation, and, in general, his portrayal of South African politicians as ‘moderates’ was appallingly wrong given their policies.

Citing a single speech as what Reagan’s position on Apartheid is is just obviously silly. Rand Paul, for example, talks a ton about how he totally doesn’t support racism, and yet he does. It’s almost as if speeches don’t match to political reality!

Maybe for the center of the nation, however for the coasts, they are more radical than both.

The Shia Persian Gulf-ers have been treated with immense cruelty. And the Hijaz-ites aren’t much better. Remember, the Nejd, where the Sauds came from, was until recently essentially a backwater place fills with the cultural equivalent to the hillbillies here.

They have committed massive crimes against Islam and Humanity for 200 year. I want to see them go do, and the Nation break apart. Hijaz goes to Jordan, the formerly Yemeni territories back to Yemen, and the Shia Persian Gulf Coast be independent.

October 3, 1986: Senate, 78 to 21, Overrides Reagan’ - S Veto and Imposes Sanctions on South Africa

WASHINGTON, Oct. 2 — The Senate voted today to override President Reagan’s veto of legislation imposing stiff economic sanctions on South Africa. In doing so it rejected his pleas for support as he prepares to meet Mikhail S. Gorbachev, the Soviet leader, in Iceland.

The vote was 78 to 21, or 12 votes more than the two-thirds vote necessary to override. Since the House also voted to rebuff the President earlier this week, the sanctions bill became law as soon as the Senate voted to override the President’s veto.

The vote today capped a two-year effort by opponents of apartheid to force the Reagan Administration into exerting more pressure on the Pretoria Government to change its policies of racial separation. The legislation will ban all new investment by Americans in South African businesses; prohibit the importation of such products as steel and coal from South Africa, and will cancel landing rights in the United States for South African airlines.

[…]

Senator Richard G. Lugar, the Indiana Republican who heads the Foreign Relations Committee and was the chief sponsor of the measure, appealed in emotional terms to Pretoria to heed the action taken by Congress.

”As a friend of that Government we are saying wake up!” he said.

re: #58 Killgore Trout

It would be an absurd accusation.

littlegreenfootballs.com

I hear he made some platitudes about curbing NSA spying Aparthied

littlegreenfootballs.com

Pres Obama Reagan doesn’t engage in “platitudes”.

Sure he does, it’s what politicians do. He wasn’t surprised by anything in the Snowden leaks South Africa but it makes a PR mess for him to clean up. If the rubes buy into then he’s done a good job.

I bought a pack of seeds
Tennessee Bradleys
The best homegrown you’ll find
How it happened I don’t know
Must’ve been the Miracle-Gro
Oh, I could not believe my eyes
In my tomato bed
A holy image blood red

Smile, God loves you
I see him on the vine
This just might be a sign
Help me I’m confused
So many brands to choose
Jesus and tomatoes coming soon

Folks came from miles around
They laid their money down
To see that ripe phenomenon
It even made the evening news
And had a website too
This vegetable from heaven
(Or is it a fruit)
What rose up from the dirt
Now sells on t-shirts

The profits kept rolling in
I prayed they’d never end
And filed for tax exemption
I heard a knocking at my door
It was a lawyer for the Lord
Saying don’t do this no more
I said come and dine with me
We’ll have a BLT

In past years, it wasn’t too bad. But Spike decided this year that they were going to “improve” it and instead turned into an absolute joke. And the game premieres haven’t really impressed me much either. Then again, that’s mostly bitterness over hearing that another year’s ending and Bethesda is still dragging their feet on whether or not they’re making Fallout 4.

I’ve given up trying to keep up with video games. I download a lot of classic stuff from gog.com and am getting back into board gaming and table top rpg via virtual tables like roll20, gametableonline.com and vassal

I keep up with them by default, since the boyfriend is a big gamer. I was a pretty active gamer years ago, especially in terms of MMOs, but grad school pretty much killed that. School was a priority over everything else. These days, very few games catch my eye and the ones that do tend to be episodic, or smaller indie games.

I’ve thought about getting into board gaming. Seems fun.

I started with Paper and Pencil RPGs back in the 70s and played through high school and college. Took 20 years off and then got back into it now that the virtual tables have gotten so good. I run a game Saturday nights on Roll 20 that’s been going for over a year. Game Table Online is really good. I am a charter member so I have a lifetime membership. Vassal is good because they have a lot of modules for card and board games which are really fun.

I have discovered that if you started with Video game RPGs, Paper and Pencil is a poor substitute, but if you started with Pencil and Paper you tend to feel the same way about Video

It was the same thing with Egypt. Nasser looked to build the dam at Aswan, but the US didn’t totally trust Nasser, so he turned to the Soviets to get the dam built (Dulles had thought that without US support, the dam project wouldn’t get done - he was wrong on that count) That began a long relationship between the Soviets and the Egyptians that ultimately ended decades later.

Encyclopedia Judaica wasn’t much help. They managed a couple pages on “Alabama Jewish History” without mentioning the Klan. On the upside they have this:

In 1995, Governor Fob James paid tribute to Israel in his inauguration, with the singing of “Hatikvah” and the blowing of the shofar by a Jerusalem rabbi. In 1999, Don Siegelman, a Catholic, was elected governor, making his wife, Lori, the state’s first Jewish First Lady.

(Don’t know their definitions, but they count fewer than 9,000 Jews in Alabama. No wonder we can’t get a decent pastrami.)

Even fucking Noot Gingrich gets it.

Patrick Henry said, “Give me liberty or give me death.”

Thomas Jefferson wrote and the Continental Congress adopted that “all men are created equal, and they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Doesn’t this apply to Nelson Mandela and his people?

Some conservatives say, ah, but he was a communist.

Actually Mandela was raised in a Methodist school, was a devout Christian, turned to communism in desperation only after South Africa was taken over by an extraordinarily racist government determined to eliminate all rights for blacks.

I would ask of his critics: where were some of these conservatives as allies against tyranny? Where were the masses of conservatives opposing Apartheid? In a desperate struggle against an overpowering government, you accept the allies you have just as Washington was grateful for a French monarchy helping him defeat the British.

Finally, if you had been imprisoned for 27 years, 18 of them in a cell eight foot by seven foot, how do you think you would have emerged? Would you have been angry? Would you have been bitter?

Nelson Mandela emerged from 27 years in prison as an astonishingly wise, patient, and compassionate person.

Yeah, it seems other regional conflicts were a factor in the “constructive engagement” policy.

The policy’s architect, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Chester Crocker, designed it to link the independence of South African-occupied Namibia to an easing of the arms embargo against South Africa and the withdrawal of Cuban troops from Angola

“Constructive engagement” was complete realpolitik horseshit, Dark.

However, that’s not to say that what did eventually happen with the release of Mandela, his ascendance to the SA presidency, and the reconciliation between blacks and whites post-apartheid would have happened the same way had it occurred years earlier; I’d hope that it would have, but no one has a crystal ball.

That said, the US (and the Soviets) fucked over a lot of people and their countries by playing the Cold War global chess game of “who’s got the biggest swinging dick?”; now, we’ve been doing it all over again since 9/11 in the GWOT, with plenty of blood and treasure needlessly lost in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere.

WND Polls Readers On Whether Mandela Should Have Been Released From Prison

A web poll on the conservative site WND asked readers on Friday to “assess the life and work of Nelson Mandela” and included several responses that criticized or mocked the deceased South African leader.

The answer that led the poll with WND readers on Friday evening described Mandela as a “violent communist revolutionary who never should have been released from prison.”

Other options included calling Mandela “a great revolutionary leader - in the tradition of Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, Che Guevara and Nicolae Ceausescu,” and a prediction that there would be “a racial bloodbath” after his death.

Another selection suggested “one of his greatest accomplishments was having a species of spiders named after him.”

Along with the critical poll answers, there were some that praised Mandela’s legacy. Those responses ranked low in the poll results as of Friday evening.

It really does seem to tear them up something fierce, the idea that they might actually have to acknowledge that history shows that the liberal icon, not St. Reagan, was the one who steered South Africa into a peaceful, post-apartheid existence.

re: #266 bratwurst

I think DF is simply demonstrating to you his personal long-term after-effects of anti-Communist paranoia

I’m saying that its not paranoia if they’re really out to get you, and the threat of communism in southern Africa was real. Does that justify apartheid? No.

But military aid and trade to South Africa wasn’t seen in terms of propping up apartheid, not at the top of the Reagan administration (though it was recognized as one of the effects). South Africa’s army was bleeding communist force in Namibia and Angola, and Reagan’s strategy was to bleed the Soviet Union and its allies wherever possible in order to weaken the USSR, reduce its threat, and hopefully hasten its demise (that subsequent demise ultimately happened faster that Reagan’s policy team had dared hope.)

But that’s only what the objectives were. Whether it was all justified is a question for each person here to answer for themselves. I’m not going to engage that question any further, save to note that the superpower collision in southern Africa was a bloody affair, and South Africa itself was very lucky to have Nelson Mandela waiting at the end of it.

WND Polls Readers On Whether Mandela Should Have Been Released From Prison

Also there, Tom Tancredo uses the occasion of Mandela’s death to attack Barack Obama yet again. Tancredo calls Obama a “street hustler”, which is to accuse the Obama of being a part of the street criminal culture he actively worked against in Chicago back in the 1980’s.

As ever, Tom Tancredo shows himself to be a dishonest asshole.

All of this living in the past. Reagan’s gone. The Soviet Union is gone. Fortunately South Africa was never sucked into the Soviet system.

Calif. health exchange shares data without consent

The California health exchange says it’s been giving the names of tens of thousands of consumers to insurance agents without their permission or knowledge in an effort to hit deadlines for coverage.

The consumers in question had gone online to research insurance options but didn’t ask to be contacted, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday (lat.ms ).

Officials with Covered California, the exchange set up in response to the federal health law, said they began providing names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses if available this week in a pilot program. They said they thought it would help people meet a Dec. 23 deadline to have health insurance in place by Jan. 1.

The Soviets were baking the ANC for cynical purposes. That being Soviet expansionism. That they backed the ANC which would in part end apartheid was an accessory to the history if not coincidental.

Not nearly as funny as the real thing, there’s no sense of speed to it the cars are moving too slow for it to be as funny a them barreling through a shopping mall like in the movie.

The Riverside County Fair (also known as the Indio Date Festival) has camel races, it is indeed cool. Not quite as cool as the Ostrich races, but still.

re: #220 Lidane

They’re assholes, but I wouldn’t wish them physical harm. Especially since that’s what they want so they can play the martyr. But the reality is that going to South Africa to protest Mandela’s funeral would lead to an arrest or someone in the crowd not taking kindly to their presence, and not having any fear of reprisal.

Why should the South African government allow them to travel there under any circumstances? They can keep their foolishness in the US where their type of “free speech” is allowed and encouraged. Not every country has the same definition of free speech as the US..
