This montage of time-lapse photography from the International Space Station is collected from many taken in Expeditions 29, 30 and 31.

The previous sequence, ‘All Alone In The Night’, highlighted night sequences and spectacular aurora light shows and intended to give a feeling of flying through space.

The goal with this sequence was to bring a bit more attention to the station itself, including the humans aboard it, particularly Don Pettit (appearing in the final shot) who took many of the sequences in this montage.

You know I just realized if Hilary wins in 2016 the wingnuts will probably do little except smoothly transfer from racism to misogyny. Of course they already ARE misogynistic, I just think a HRC win would take it up to 11.

I think what’s been amusing is the simultaneous effort to co-opt the man and his achievements and the frothing rage over his getting recognition for his accomplishments instead of being written off as a “terrorist” or a “communist.” I’ve even had a couple wingnuts all but declare that it was a bad thing for apartheid to be dismantled, on the grounds that the country was “better” under white minority rule.

I’m of the belief that if Hillary is the nominee a new level of misogyny will open up and it might break the republican party so we can finally move forward with reality based conservatives forming a new party. The new party is just a hope of mine, but if she is the nominee we will see anti women shit go to 11 and I don’t think that that is in any way a controversial opinion.

The base doesn’t take racism personally, since only .5% are themselves black… but a solid 40% are women. And the rest of them have mothers.

Don’t know whether it still can be done, but yeah, definitely.

Confidentiality agreement from when I was a trademark secretary prevents me from going into specifics, but I worked on a case where a guy trademarked _____________ for children’s books and associated items, and the company — now one of the largest in the U.S. — fought like hell to get his trademark revoked. Administrative Law Judge eventually ruled against the company. While I wasn’t privy to the terms of the actual settlement, my boss hinted that the guy — basically a low-life, semi-dirtbag dreamer who thought his somewhat amateurish idea for children’s books was going to hit the big time — got a nice six figure settlement to sign over the trademark to the company.

America — what a country!

Carroll released a statement about the alleged threat to her client the same week that a national report on the gross underreporting of sexual assault and widespread mishandling of rape cases was released by the National Research Council. The report found that law enforcement agencies across the country are often disinclined, poorly equipped or inadequately trained to document such cases and support victims. Which is why, according to national data, of every 100 rapes, only 40 will be reported, 10 will lead to to an arrest, 8 will lead to prosecution and 4 will lead to a felony conviction.

Of every 100 rapists, only three will serve more than a day in jail for their crimes. The other 97 perpetrators will walk free, and the other 97 victims will have to live with that fact.

Section 8 requires health professionals, including doctors who preference the wellbeing of the foetus over that of the woman, to tell her so and give her information about another doctor she can see who will treat her as a person capable of making her own morally sound decisions. It is a small thing to ask.

What a concept!

Trying to undo years of non-guidance by my grandson’s alcoholic parents is a real strain and a terrible test of patience, while trying to carve out some time for myself. I’m never truly alone, so early morning is “my” time.

My grandson is a great kid in many respects, but last night, after months of my suggestions that he get a faulty ball joint fixed on his car, it blew. Now he is jobless, car-less, and with no money. Spent his last $75 having the car towed back here, but he was lucky that it happened when he had just made a turn and had not gotten up any speed. He listened to some guy who changed his oil tell him the ball joint could be put off. I had told him differently, that it could lead to a fatal wreck and he should get it fixed ASAP and not spend any more money on his gaming (his escapism) but save it.

When do 23 yr olds start to believe that grandmother actually might know better than some ignorant yahoo, some random guy, who doesn’t give a flying fuck about him? Why would some young guy trust another guy he doesn’t know from Adam, and not his grandmother who he has known all his life? He knows I’m not stupid; in fact, I know a fair amount about cars, gleaned over the years and from research here and there. Even if I don’t want to change the oil in mine, I know why and how to do it, but I prefer to pay someone. : )

Youth seems to come with a feeling of being bulletproof. It has its advantages at times, like being unafraid to try new things or feeling the world is full of endless possibilities, but it also leads to some very dumb decisions. I hope he learns from this to listen to The Grandmother.

Is there public transportation where you are? Places nearby where he could walk to work if need be? Not ideal of course, but it would help in the meantime.

We live in a rural area. A car is a must—there are some fast food joints nearby (we’re a couple of miles from a crossroads), but absolutely no public. I used to take him, but he got tired of having to bring the baby out with me at night, etc, and depending on me.

He’s trying to be an adult, but it really isn’t easy these days.

I know, hell it’s not easy when you’ve been at this adult thing for awhile. I get scared for young people sometimes. I hope he finds something soon.

My husband has been through 4 jobs since 2008 due to “downsizing”, every job has paid less than the one before it, for the same job. Except the first one, which he had been at for 15 yrs making a low 6 figures when he was let go. The company decided it didn’t need middle management anymore and cut 80 percent of those jobs in a two week period. We’re living on less than half of what we were a few years ago and our retirement money is GONE. ALL of it. Most of it was lost in the financial crash, the rest we had to use to pay bills, including hospital bills. I honestly don’t know how any kid just starting out can do it without help now. It’s really scary.

I’ve found that the older I get, the fewer ingredients I prefer in dishes (making something from scratch and memory can always be tweaked, too). There’s a lot of chance of forgetting to put something in when you have 15 ingredients, rather than half a dozen. And spices and herbs are a matter of taste, not of necessity, even in a test kitchen. Even when I look up a recipe online, I tend to avoid the ones which call for 2 dozen ingredients and/or “exotic” ingredients or those not obtainable around here. When you’re on a budget, it doesn’t make sense to pay $20 for something you might never use again because you simply don’t like it, or the dish is a one-off experiment. We eat a variety of ethnic foods, made to our own taste, but even southern cooking is tweaked to get rid of the fat and sugar. Have you ever baked a sweet potato and just eaten it with absolutely nothing added, not even salt? It’s the perfect vegetable in that respect.

I’ve never had any complaints, and mostly praise, esp from people who seldom get a “home cooked” meal and have to depend on restaurants.

Has anyone written a history of South Africa? Not sure but I believe European’s went to south Africa at the same time they came to America. And just like America the settler’s in South Africa began the long process of improving the lives of all the natives. So a lot of people un named, un known, forgotten that helped Mandela become a world figure will never get any recognition to speak of. Insight: Family, politicians battle over “Brand Mandela”

reuters.com

(Reuters) - From political posters to bottles of wine and kitchen aprons, the face and name of Nelson Mandela are a potent commercial and political brand in South Africa. Little wonder it’s so sought after - and the source of occasional squabbles.

“Following his death on Thursday at the age of 95, the scramble for control of the Mandela legacy - both financial and moral - will involve his family, the ruling African National Congress (ANC), and the Nelson Mandela Foundation he set up to protect his broader message.

“At stake is the inheritance that will go to Mandela’s more than 30 children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, some of whom already use the Mandela name and image to market everything from clothing to reality TV.”

75 Tim TeaBro  Sun, Dec 8, 2013 7:04:03am

“Gorilla” warrior. Your modern GOP, ladies and gentlemen.

I guess I should congratulate Gingrich for his apparent long-term support of Mandela. The cynic in me, however, says that at some point, Newt will compare himself to Mandela in Newt’s quest to destroy the ACA.

Which is basically the same policy he promoted before Scary Black Man in White House™ endorsed it.

If you are learning to cook go to Cook’s Illustrated and try the 14-day free trial. Those recipes have been tested and it will give you cooking skills a boost. cooksillustrated.com

I can also recommend finding one of their “Best Recipes” cookbooks. Wide variety of well-tested recipes, but best of all each recipe comes with text where they describe their goal for the recipe and how they made decisions regarding the recipe due to testing. There are also sidebar pages where they compare different brands of certain products (like ketchup), equipment, or describe certain common kitchen activities.

So, in addition to get a pile of robust recipes you can also pick up something of a cooking education since the information regarding why something works for one recipe applies for other non-cookbook recipes.

My own feeling is that Newt has had his fill of people like Ms. Baehr-Schaefer, who scream invective at all perceived ‘enemies’ even when doing that clearly just causes trouble, and whose concerns about purity prevent them from getting anything useful done. Newt Gingrich has always wanted to actually get things done; We can argue about if the things are wants are the right policy options, but he does see the government having responsibilities to act, not just sit and scream.

The 1995-1996 shutdown was a very different animal from the 2013 shutdown. Newt had firm control of the House GOP in 95-96 and he had a good idea about what he wanted (though he didn’t get a lot of it). The Republicans also controlled the Senate, which made their hand somewhat stronger. Lastly and most crucially, the 95-96 shutdown was about policy differences first and foremost, with a secondary concern about electoral politics.

By contrast, the 2013 shutdown was forced on the House leadership by a restive party base and Tea Party caucus that is unwilling to be tamed and more concerned with remaining ‘pure’ than accomplishing anything. Moreover, the 2013 shutdown was first and foremost about rage directed at Barack Obama, with Obamacare mostly being an outlet for that rage.

That is a pile of steaming crap, and you know it. Electoral politics was primary then as it is now.

The fact is, you can’t accept that there are those in the R party who would rule this country with a real iron fist, such as we have seen them attempt to do over the past 30 years. Just because they had a few failures didn’t mean they haven’t been trying all that time. And it has to be about electoral politics, or you don’t always get to do what you want to do unless you have majorities in both houses as well as the presidency.

Oh, nice! It has dropped to 35 deg here, so there is a chance, being colder at a higher altitude, that we could conceivably get something here in lower NC. Already had thunder and rain earlier as I was coming back from the grocery store and it’s cooooold (only wore a heavy sweater).

We’re on the cusp, so could or not get frozen stuff of some sort.

re: #91 Justanotherhuman

I disagree, intensely. Gingrich’s primary objective in 95-96 was to force Bill Clinton to accept his budget priorities, wounding Clinton politically was a secondary objective as Newt was aware of how hard it is to defeat a sitting president running for reelection if that president does not face a primary challenge.

The 2013 shutdown was too far from an election to be primarily about electoral politics. It was first and foremost about “STOPPING THE TYRANNY OF OBAMACARE!!1”, and not about rational concerns about the implementation of the ACA.

Nonsense. Newt is the ultimate cynical politician. It’s all about power to him, not ‘getting things done’. You’re talking about a guy who sat with Nancy Pelosi and said we have to take Global Warming seriously, then stood with the rest of the Clown Car to call it a hoax; who criticized Obama for not getting involved in Libya two weeks before he criticized Obama for doing exactly what Newt said HE’D do.

His schtick worked on the rubes of the GOP for a while, till they figured out he doesn’t really believe in anything except Newt Gingrich. There are still a number of people dumb enough to be fooled for a while, but even in that confederacy of dunces you call your party, people figure it out.

If he’s calling Mandela a statesman and criticizing those who attack him, it’s because he has made a political calculation that it will be to his advantage.

The thing is that Newt was for sanctions on the apartheid government of South Africa back in the 1980’s, even to the point of voting to override President Reagan’s veto of said sanctions. and Newt spoke well of Nelson Mandela back then.

This particular issue is one where Newt Gingrich has been consistent for more than 25 years. I would therefore submit to you that what he says in this matter represents his actual belief in the matter.

TEHRAN — In a speech marking Student Day, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday sought “consensus” for his ambitious goals of political reform, economic growth and improved relations with the outside world.

…”We need tolerance and patience to resolve various issues,” Rouhani told the assembled students, according to a translation from the BBC Monitoring service. “The problems are solvable, but, my dear ones, we should deal with issues rationally.”

I think it really is all the tears from Buckeye football fans still crying over last night’s defeat turning to ice in the low temps.

Me…it was a good game. The Buckeyes got beat. 24 consecutive wins isn’t bad…and they will still get in a good bowl game. Hopefully they get matched up against an SEC team so we can take it out on them and maybe do a little proving to the Buckeyes themselves to get ‘em ready for next year.

By the way…do they play any defense in SEC games? 59-42? What? That’s a track meet.
