Newt Gingrich Shocked (Shocked!) at Nelson Mandela Backlash

Why the surprise, Newt? Don’t you recognize your base?
Wingnuts • Views: 25,839

Newt Gingrich is the latest right wing figure to make a gracious statement on the death of Nelson Mandela, and find himself the target of thousands of abusive, racist and hateful messages from his own base as a result.

“President Nelson Mandela was one of the greatest leaders of our lifetime,” he wrote. “When he visited the Congress I was deeply impressed with the charisma and the calmness with which he could dominate a room. It was as if the rest of us grew smaller and he grew stronger and more dominant the longer the meeting continued.”

Gingrich’s statement, however, was met with backlash from many of his followers.

“Newt, I was rooting for you to win the primaries and become the next president; please tell me your joking!! Mandela was a commie murderer!!” read one comment that was popular with other users.

“You’re forgetting Mandela’s extreme racism! There are YouTubes of Mandela singing songs about murdering the white man. I spit on his grave….,” read another.

When asked about the criticism in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Gingrich replied, “I was very surprised by it. [My wife] Callista posted my statement on her Facebook page and was amazed at some of the intensity — some of whom came back three, four and five times repeating how angry they were.”

Gingrich’s words on Mandela may sound sane enough, but I’m not sure why he’s surprised by the response from the right wing base. After all, this is the same guy who was scheduled to speak at hate group leader Pamela Geller’s “Ground Zero Mosque” rally, the same guy who called Obama “the first food stamp President,” and the same guy who said Obama has a “Kenyan world view.” Among many other similar statements.

He’s been blatantly pandering to the knuckle draggers in the right wing base for decades, but now he’s shocked! when they react exactly as he’s indoctrinated them to react? I don’t believe it, sorry. He’s no political dummy; he had to expect this.

Perhaps he is shocked that his base has become so open and, frankly, loud about their racism. A large fraction of them were able to keep it much more on the down-low when there wasn’t the eeeevil Marxist Kenyo-Muslim Usurper in the White House.

Gingrich: “What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [his actions]?”

President Nelson Mandela of course, never had any of that “anti-colonial” attitude.

He shouldn’t be shocked, he heard enough of that from the audiences during the primary debates.
And said NOTHING…

‘March of a Million’ protestors pull down Lenin statues in Kiev

The almost seven-decade life of Russian revolution leader Vladimir Lenin’s statue in Kiev ended in spectacular fashion, with a half backwards somersault and dive head-first into the ground.

As hundreds of thousands protested against the government of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and its rejection of a pact with the European Union, some 30 people in masks surrounded the statue in central Kiev.

They brandished the blue flags of the nationalist Svoboda (Freedom) group indicating they were likely linked to the party, two of whose deputies were also present.

The Atlantic’s Ta-Nehisi Coates:

This is not an attempt to rewrite history, or claim someone in death whom Gingrich opposed in life. Newt Gingrich was among a cadre of conservatives who opposed the mainstream conservative stance on apartheid and ultimately helped override Reagan’s unconscionable veto of sanctions. At the time, Gingrich was allied with a group of young conservatives including Vin Weber looking to challenge Republican orthodoxy on South Africa…

Something else: There’s a video attached to the post in which Gingrich gives his thoughts on Mandela’s passing. When Gingrich compliments Mandela on his presidency he doesn’t do so within the context of alleged African pathologies, but within the context of countries throughout the world. It’s a textbook lessons in “How not to be racist,” which is to say it is a textbook lesson in how to talk about Nelson Mandela as though he were a human being.

Gingrich’s statement on Mandela, and his sticking to his guns, is statesmanship from a leader who hasn’t always been statemanlike. It should serve as an example to the American governing elite irrespective of political party. There are more important things happening at home and abroad than who scores the next talking point or wins the next election.

RIP Nelson Mandela. If indeed humanity is progressing notwithstanding the confused stupid bloody elements in our history, you will be recorded as a trailblazer.

He’s fickle. He would merrily race bait for political gain if he thought it would bring him more celebrity and power.

I think the right might have awakened to the fact that they can’t win nationally with only white votes. So I am not willing to give Newt that much credit here. He is just saying this sh*t out of necessity.

Possibly. Depending how Rand Paul packages himself I think he might get the “Hope and Change” seal of approval from establishment Republicans. But the Tea Party (as a popular) movement has waned so I don’t expect a lot of Christine Odonnel-types time.

The exception they cut out for the military is hilarious, considering that the DoD budget is so large, it can’t even be audited. But of course not only are soldiers, but private contractors given a pass from the whole “government check” business, they’re actually encouraged to vote whereas those who’ve served or worked on their government contracts are told to piss off because they’re costing us money.

re: #42 Lord of the Pies

I have always wondered how this level of misanthropy can build up inside of a man(or woman of course) to cause this much antipathy towards their fellow men(or women).

What kind of complex is this?

When I was a factory worker in my early twenties I was accustomed to working with fools of all shades and backgrounds. Vagrancy is the name of the game in factory life, and most of those vagrants were drug addicts and drunks. I looked down on this behavior as a fundamental weakness of character, but never once did it occur to me that this person didn’t deserve a living wage for a hard days work. Never.

If anything I was always on the side of higher wages for all the employees at the metal works where we spent our days shaping and forming steel and aluminum for companies like John Deere, Paccar, and Nacco.

What causes the some of these types that really don’t perform any physical labor whatsoever over the course of their day, to look down upon those that make their food, stamp the metal panels on the side of their vehicles, pave their roads, build their houses, as low skilled dreck that isn’t even worth a minimum level of income for their labor?

Is this just a by product of a long obsolete evolutionary quirk from our past? Really what is it?

The filter is there selectively, as in he probably won’t be so stupid as to allow himself to be caught staying silent while the audience cheers on the idea of sick people dying in the gutters, but he’s not likely to stand up and say he’s actually against it. The Dem primaries won’t get that hot. You won’t see any bullshit about Benghazi or Warren’s ancestry. There is a reason that Clinton and Warrent shouldn’t team up on a ticket though. The Dems should use the VP slot on someone like Claire McCaskill, a Senator from a slightly competitive red state. Two blue state candidates don’t help to flip any enemy territory, and even though Obama and Biden have pulled it off twice it’s still not the best strategy on paper.

McCaskill and Duckworth would also make a good ticket. The Republicans would look like dogshit trying to tear Tammy down, and if they allow Cruz to run in the primary then any argument about Duckworth having been born in Thailand goes right out the window.

Yeah but giving up a hard won D governorship of Texas would have it’s own terrible consequences. It’s a crime that the military is trying its damnedest to argue is the fault of the victim, when it’s not simply sweeping the matter under the rug. Making it a major issue in ‘16 would be to the GOP’s detriment, as they’re currently in Congress trying to argue that the issue doesn’t exist, when they’re not trying to argue that the problem is we allow women in the military at all.

How does this kind of simplistic nonsensical syllogism even strike you as remotely appealing, to anybody? Forget women, people in general aren’t going to be particularly swayed by some fat guy avoiding talking about rape and sexual assault in the military by attempting to discuss “crime” as an abstraction.

“Let the vets vote on consev vs lib”

They did, with their wallets. Serving and former military donated more to Obama than Romney in the last election.

President Obama beat Mitt Romney in donations from active and former military donors this past election cycle. The new information comes from the Center for Responsive Politics, a non-profit, money in politics watchdog that tracked donations from military members throughout the presidential campaign. Throughout the presidential campaign, Republicans claimed that the President was anti-military. Some, like Rick Santorum, even said that President Obama was “intentionally trying to degrade our military.” Despite the Republican rhetoric, the President raised nearly $950,000 in donations from former and active military members. That’s compared to $753,000 for Mitt Romney.

The smart way would be to admit what a terrible, terrible record and stance they have on women’s issues, pledge to resolve it, and pledge to educate their constituents on these matters instead of spreading ignorance and lies.

It really would be ‘smart’. Any other option is, in the end, going to harm the GOP as well as the country.

Yes, it’s true. There are Marxists on the left. There are also Nazis on the right.

And Marxist critique is incredibly valuable. Marx’s political solutions are basically vague hand-waving, but Marx identified the problems inherent in capitalism pretty much spot on. He still represents a largely unanswered question, as the current state of our economy, with the capital class gaining and gaining wealth while workers lose value shows. This is, literally, a correct Marxist prediction. The only times we’ve seen a retrograde on that is when there’s been high tax rates and strong social welfare programs. Marxists and Communists have been absolutely vital in the fight for labor protection and social welfare.

The Nazis didn’t really come up with anything worthwhile, or do anything worthwhile, at all.

Instead, I would argue this: If we raised the minimum wage, instead of paying taxes, we would be paying money directly to the people earning it. Isn’t that what they want?

OK, I kid myself a little bit with that question. What they want is for “lazy” people to be working for nothing. They just don’t think they would be part of the “lazy” people.

Went to the Christmas Event last night. Big time Dinner with an estimated 600 to 1000 attendees. The Movers and shakers of Oklahoma. I was lucky to go. They had comedians and Magicians and music. It was pretty cool.
If you have a minute..I’d like to review the the high class dinner. For the last year I’ve really gotten into cooking..I really like it and want to open a place in the future by the lake. I think I could partner with my friends to open a great place..
First off..We are talking about a bunch of Chefs cooking for up to 1000 people in fancy town..I couldn’t do it..
1) Salad. I swear to Gawd if you give me a few spinach leaves, a shaved piece of a pear and a few walnuts and call that a dinner salad I will take a baseball bat to your knees. Laziness. You know when you visit my Cafe you will get a great dinner salad. 99% of everywhere I’ve eaten the dinner salad consists of lettuce and part of a old tomato,,When was the last time you left a place and said..Damn..That was a great little dinner salad? Never? Thought so.
Now the main course was the thickest piece of meat I have ever seen.. This is Oklahoma..but good Lord..And overcooked Veggies..
So here is what I’d do.. They really had to cook the meat…So it was over done but what choice do you have cooking that much beef?
Well.. If it were me.. I’d cook most of that freaking cow medium rare..
Slice it up into tender slices on the plate and cover it with a rich beef seasoned sauce. Now to overcooked veggies.. You are in a no-win situation cooking for that many people…I say go for a fruit plate instead of the veggies.. Freshen the pallet and you can’t go wrong with fruit.
Now they also had tatters.. Smashed with the skins..Nothing special.. Easy and lazy. Donnie can make mashed potatoes that is pure heaven. They melt in your mouth. Make the starch something you will remember..
Just my thoughts about my Cafe on the Lake..:)

I’d ask anybody who thinks that welfare is bad because it encourages people not to work to explain how that’s a bad thing when the tax code encourages the rich to simply make money off investing in the stock market than in businesses? We have a tax code that favors unearned income over earned income, but we’re supposed to feel bad that people are dropping out of the labor market to get welfare than busting their asses and still only treading water?

If that’s the case, I don’t understand how married military w/dependents are eligible for SNAP benefits, but I don’t know how that works these days. We got a dependent’s check, some of which (not all) was deducted from the serviceman’s pay. I remember precisely what my allotment for myself and 2 kids was: $159/mo, with no allowance for housing or anything else, except health care which had to be gotten on base, or I had to pay more for civilian care, a co-pay of sorts. If you were separated (as I found out), you were not eligible for any on-base housing of any sort—you simply became persona non grata.

Low rank and years of service coupled with a very large family will do it. Note the pay has increased a great deal since the all-volunteer Army. My E0 pay was $49 and change per month. (Of course a case of Budweiser was $3.00 at the Class VI.)

What did Reagan do to secure Nelson’s release? Did he impose sanctions? Nope, even the article acknowledges that he was against them. Did he cut off aid to the regime? Nope, he increased it upon entering office and fought efforts to curb it. Did he work with the UN to force Botha’s hand? Nope, the US continued to use it’s Security Council veto protect SA. So what did he do? Oh right, he made some nice speeches and that’s supposed to be enough to give him partial credit.

It’s way over the limit for SNAP. The poverty level for a family of 4 is something like $22K/yr. We 3 lived on my SS check for over 6 mos (around $12K/yr), and recently around $22K (after taxes). For us, it’s doable, but not easy when a big expense comes up, like a car repair or a trip to the dentist.

And the numbers are BS unless you twist the pay tables and exaggerate the yearly hours unrealistically. A representative deployed soldier would be an E4 with 2 years, making $2184.10 per month before family medical, food, housing, and uniform allowances, tax-free in a combat zone.

Digging for troop data using casualties as an analogue, most soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan had 4-6 years service (biased by heavy use of reserves). So the pay assumptions were conservative.

This summary from a student at the Naval Postgraduate School, was an eye-opener.

“Our study shows that pay grades E1 through E3 are more likely to be involved in hostile incidents than other pay-grade groups, and that probability of injury or death decreases as pay grade increases. The findings for gender are not parallel to popular ideas. Male servicemen are less likely to get killed or injured than women after adjusting for other
casualties. In terms of the effects of marital status, our study shows that married servicemen are more likely to be involved in hostile incidents. In our model, we found that regular forces have a lower risk of engaging in hostile incidents than guard and reserve forces, which is contrary to general expectation. The results for MOS were as expected. Combat troops are more likely to be killed or injured than other troops.
As a conclusion for our multivariate model, a serviceman who is female, married, serving in the reserve forces, serving in a combat troop, between pay grades E1-E3, serving in Iraq, serving the first deployment is the serviceman with most potential to get injured or killed in the U.S. Army.”

What ultimately saved the US from a communist revolution the first go around was that we had a representative government where the people could still be sure that if they screamed loud enough, things would get done. We passed a slew of worker protections and rights, established programs to take care of the infirm and the elderly, and we recognized that you can’t run a country where the average worker pays more in taxes annually than the man he’s working for.

All that was undone in less than a decade and we’ve been watching the country backslide ever since.

We have a female Newfoundland (my profile pic) who really wanted to play/wrestle but at 100 pounds we couldn’t allow her to play with us because she just knocked everyone over, so we went looking for an older male giant breed who was young enough to play but old enough to be calm.

We ended up with a 4-year-old Great Pyrenees purebred from a rescue. He is the best dog in the world. Sydney (our newfie) is a guys dog, she is bonded more with my husband and oldest son than anyone else, but Gabriel is my dog and has been from the minute we met him.

He is typical Pyr, smart as hell but stubborn. He knows what you are saying to him, he just has to think it over before he decides if he will obey you or not. He is the calmest dog you could imagine. People always want to pet him when we are out in public and he just stands there calmly. There have been times a little one tries to pull on his ears or lips and he just stands completely still; at most he might let out a big sigh.

I cannot say enough about the breed. If you can deal with the grooming needs, which are high, they are fantastic dogs (though they are meant to be with their people and are not happy outside too much. But, they are so lazy that they are just fine even in apartments.)

How Gabe spends most of his day

Whenever I am at my desk…
