A lot of those Xmas photos seem to stem from the 70/80’s, an era of unique strangeness in American popular cultural history.

White middle america is fucking strange.

I was showing my grandson those and he said, “Grandma, I don’t often feel at the top of the gene pool, but when I do, it’s when I’m at WalMart.”

Then, he said, when shown the photo of Granny in the t-shirt: “Grandma, promise me you’ll never do that.”

Probably street Portuguese, but he obviously knows educated people who do, like those at El Globo, where he’s appeared on their TV program a number of times. That would be enough for that lot at HP/AOL—contacts. They need to get established before the World Cup.

Well, lookee here. Want to know if your State legislators are bought by ALEC?

Page 39. The entire legislatures in S. Dakota and Iowa are members of ALEC, 100%. But it also appears ALEC is losing ground in some states: “Lost over 40%”—I think NC is among those. Art Pope is boss in NC, not ALEC, and I don’t know which is worse.

ALEC also voted to establish a 501(c)(4) called “The Jeffersonian Project” which could do any ALEC activities if legal counsel advises it will “provide greater legal protections and lessen ethics concerns.”

A closer read of this ALEC documents gives great insight into how corporate interests combined with legislatures influence laws, lawmakers, and our future.

NC membership may have fallen off to practically zilch, but the Speaker of the NC House, Thom Tillis, is a director of ALEC. (Page 5) He and Art Pope (called the third Koch brother in NC) are buddy-buddy in Tillis’s Senate race.

He would run against Kay Hagen in 2014, but his approval numbers are down in the GOP primary race right now.

Not funny. I don’t use a cell phone, but men really don’t want women who are that weird, that they wouldn’t have the latest gadgets. I mean, how could they send each other photos of their genitals? Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer being unwrapped like a present, and getting one myself, not being seen as some sort of “investment” of someone’s time and energy. That takes all the fun out of it.

I suppose I just don’t understand modern “courtship” at all. Well, that I even called it that puts me in way back in the 20th century, I suppose.

When in the last 10 years did people start calling it “having sex” instead of “making love”?

Call me an old romantic, but it just sounds so damned clinical. I suppose “getting off” is more important these days for far too many. You wanna do that instead of really “being there” for the other person and his or her needs, getting to know one another, do it yourself.

NSA uses ‘cookies’ to locate its targets

[…]

The agency’s internal presentation slides, provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, show that when companies follow consumers on the Internet to better tailor their advertising, the technique opens the door for similar tracking by the government.

According to the documents, the NSA and its British counterpart, GCHQ, are using the tracking files called “cookies” that advertising networks place on computers to identify people browsing the Internet.

One of the wingnuts’ favorite tokens, Walter Williams, chimes:

Williams: It is not about Earth, but communism

[…]

I’ve pointed out only a tiny portion of the cataclysmic events that have struck the earth — ignoring whole categories, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, lightning strikes, fires, blizzards, landslides and avalanches. Despite these cataclysmic events, the earth survived. My question is: Which of these powers of nature can be matched by mankind? For example, can mankind duplicate the polluting effects of the 1815 Tambora volcanic eruption or the asteroid impact that wiped out dinosaurs? It is the height of arrogance to think that mankind can make significant parametric changes in the earth or can match nature’s destructive forces.

Occasionally, environmentalists spill the beans and reveal their true agenda. Barry Commoner said, “Capitalism is the earth’s number one enemy.” Amherst College professor Leo Marx said, “On ecological grounds, the case for world government is beyond argument.” With the decline of the USSR, communism has lost considerable respectability and is now repackaged as environmentalism and progressivism.

Meanwhile, down south, way south:

Antarctica’s Ice Loss On The Rise

Three years of observations by ESA’s CryoSat satellite show that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is losing over 150 cubic kilometres of ice each year – considerably more than when last surveyed.

The imbalance in West Antarctica continues to be dominated by ice losses from glaciers flowing into the Amundsen Sea.

“We find that ice thinning continues to be most pronounced along fast-flowing ice streams of this sector and their tributaries, with thinning rates of between 4–8 m per year near to the grounding lines – where the ice streams lift up off the land and begin to float out over the ocean – of the Pine Island, Thwaites and Smith Glaciers,” said Dr Malcolm McMillan from the University of Leeds, UK.

Melting of ice sheets that blanket Antarctica and Greenland is a major contributor to global sea-level rise.

An international team of polar scientists had recently concluded that West Antarctica caused global sea levels to rise by 0.28 mm each year between 2005 and 2010, based on observations from 10 different satellite missions. But the latest research from CryoSat suggests that the sea level contribution from this area is now 15% higher.

“Capitalism is the earth’s number one enemy.” Amherst College professor Leo Marx said, “On ecological grounds, the case for world government is beyond argument.”

One function of the market is to ensure that the price of an item is in line with the actual costs related to it, including social and environmental ones.

Without a mechanism to ensure ensure that costs are borne by those who incur them, the entire system is skewered towards players who manage to slough their costs off down the road or sweep them underground for others to deal with later.

And since these elements do not stop at national boundaries, there is a strong case for an international body to regulate the markets.

MMmm. A steaming hot one, fresh off the presses.

Report: Wisconsin’s rejection of Medicaid money will cost the state $1.8 billion in 2022

According to a new study, Wisconsin will lose $1.8 billion in 2022 by rejecting federal funds to pay for expansion of its Medicaid program.

While that pales in comparison to the $9.2 billion Texas will lose as a consequence of rejecting federally funded Medicaid expansion, or the $5 billion forgone by Florida, it roughly equals the amount the state will pay that year in incentives to attract private businesses to the state.

And the kicker: Wisconsin residents will still pay federal taxes that go to fund Medicaid expansion in other states.

I guess he didn’t get the RW memo that they hate the pope now. Shit, didn’t Pope John Paul II win in the late 70’s or early 80’s? What idiots like Barber don’t seem to get is Time chooses someone who they think they had the most impact on the year so even though I strongly do disagree with Francis on abortion and gay marriage, I think it’s a fine choice because I think he’s starting a new dialogue and attitude within the RCC that needed to happen. Even this old atheist approves the choice. I don’t mind incremental change, after all, it’s better than the “all or nothing” choices, and if Francis does change the direction of the church to embrace helping the poor, more power to him.

Greets and saluts from the chilly but sunny NYC metro area. I see that Time selected Pope Francis as the POY. It’s a good though safe choice.

The Pope has definitely put his own stamp on the Vatican’s public face. He’s trying to move the Church in a more person-centric direction where faith is paramount and trying to get people to connect or reconnect with the Church, especially in areas where the Church has lost support through scandals. His message is one of trying to spread the faith while remaining true to traditional church doctrine. It wont be a sea-change where all of a sudden we’ll see gay or married priests, but one that is more inclusive.

Those are generally positive developments.

I see that Snowden’s a runner up and Greenwald’s feeling the hurtz. Too bad. So sad. Snowden’s a criminal who stole classified information and isn’t a whistleblower (which would indicate that he’s stayed in-country to defend his actions). He fled to a country and sought asylum in a country that directly benefits from the revelations (Russia). Did he shake up national security? Absolutely. That’s why he’s in the running.

But so too is the butcher Assad. Murdering his own countrymen who have taken up arms against him because of his violent repression of the majority of Syrians - more than 120,000 have died in Syria because of the ongoing conflict. His actions have repercussions throughout the Middle East. So, that put him in the running.

On the whole, the Pope’s selection is a positivist choice - one that is intended to make people feel good, rather than going with someone whose criminality was particularly noteworthy.

There are cases where nominating a TP nut case worked, like with Sharron Angle in Nevada, Christine O’Donnell in Delaware or Joe Miller in Alaska. But it does not necessarily mean that they will then lose out to a more reasonable Democratic/independent candidate.

It’s Texas—they’re going to elect a nutcase.

Once more, we demonstrate that for a majority of the GOP “tomorrow doesn’t matter today.”

I still haven’t decided whether I’m amused or enraged that the people that bleat the loudest about “Religious Freedom” don’t actually give one single damn about actual freedom, just the ability to shove their particular flavor of fairy tale down everyone else’s throat.

But then, that’s really just a subset of my distaste for the American Right as a whole. Even if their economic ideas were anything other than a way to prop up the wealthy at the expense of everyone else, I refuse to have anything to do with the kind of obvious hypocrite that crows about being “the party of freedom/liberty/etc.” and then immediately tries to have the government tell me who I can or can’t marry, or which plants I can or can’t smoke.

Believing that the Republican party, or any of its surrogate splinter factions, stands for anything resembling “freedom” requires one to be a complete idiot that is literally incapable of critical thought.

ok, in fairness you can (short term) balance the budget on just tax cuts. The problem is the consequences: See my earlier comment of “tomorrow doesn’t matter today.”

And we’ve cut sufficient at this time that we could, with little negative consequence for about a decade, balance the budget solely by raising taxes on the rich. Add a new bracket at 1 million dollars, make the rate 50%. Well, no negative consequence beyond the loud complaints of people with lots of money to swing around.

But in general, yes, we have to do both.

Wouldn’t you rather have a budget deal? Ryan and Murray seem to have negotiated a decent one. how about holding off on the trolling so the deal can get passed.

Trolling? I think that was posted in response to Harry Reid buddying up for a photo with John Cornyn…and how that will send the wingnuts into a tizzy. Nothing to do with the budget.

Freakishly realistic telemarketing robots are denying they’re robots

[Embedded content]

I gotta admit the robot sounds pretty human.

Because instead of doing synthesized Text-To-Speech (Microsoft Sam, etc.), they hired a woman to sit down and record a set of lines, then configured a bot script to play back those lines instead of responding with canned text and then running it through TTS.

Which is why the bot’s phrases are so repetitive and don’t make sense in context if you’re familiar with how actual humans behave in conversation.

“Are you sure you’re not a robot” is a question that, with an actual human, garners a response along the lines of, “I’m sure that I’m not a robot, sir.” A typical person often responds to the question with some part of the original question phrase as an indication that they’ve heard what you’re saying, a sort of call-back confirmation. But the bot can’t make arbitrary phrases, they only have a handful of canned “I’m a real person” phrases available, so it uses one and then picks something from their ‘excuse library’, i.e. ‘bad connection’. It hears “robot” and assumes that it’s being questioned as to whether or not it’s a bot. Hell, you could probably trick it by asking, “So, what are your thoughts on robots?”, to which it will likely respond that it’s a real person, you must have a bad connection.

Basically, it’s nothing new or interesting. They just decided to try using pre-recorded lines instead of TTS because some people are gullible enough to believe human-sounding lines no matter how strange the conversation is, but TTS is a dead giveaway to even braindead people.

That’s rather the point of this sort of thing. It’s dishonest at the core. Again, people who are familiar with human conversation and of moderate intelligence can spot these sorts of bots easy. We know that humans simply don’t repeat a phrase the exact same way with the exact same inflection. We know when a question is being improperly answered, because the machine doesn’t have the ability to dynamically create responses. It’s the Uncanny Valley, just in audio form instead of visual — as a species we’re pretty good at detecting cheats. Where the problem comes in is with people who aren’t in full possession of their faculties, for whatever reason, and yes the elderly tend to be one such group. To such people, the odd and disjointed way that the machine answers just seems like a particularly inept intern reading from a script.

Personally, I don’t think that ANY form of automated telephone advertising should be legal, let alone openly deceptive ones such as this. My phone is my link to family and friends, especially so in times of emergency, as well as my means of contacting emergency services like police and ambulance should the need arise. We are always getting a robocall that starts out “If you are a senior citizen, YOU MUST listen to this message!” I don’t know what the rest of the message is because 1) I’m not a senior citizen 2) I hang up. But there are a lot of elderly who were raised to respect authority who must think they are obligated to listen to the pitch.

I used to love the ones “We have an important call for you… Please remain on the line”…. if it was so important you wouldn’t have called me and then stuck me in the queue. There would be somebody there.

I also got one one time when I had a land-line on my answering machine. A 15 minute sales pitch for something, interrupted occasional to say “If you would like to speak to a sales associate, Please press “1”….” It truly was “Have Your Machine Call My Machine”

U.S. charitable foundation said Wednesday that it was the anonymous bidder which paid $530,000 for 24 Native American masks, and will return them to the Hopi Nation in Arizona and the San Carlos Apache tribe.

“These are not trophies to have on one’s mantel,” said Gregory Annenberg Weingarten, director of the Los Angeles-based Annenberg Foundation. He added: “They do not belong in auction houses or private collections.”

Twenty-one masks are being returned to the Hopis and three to the San Carlos Apaches.

[…]

The masks are considered sacred and are not meant to be on display or featured in pictures.

This isn’t going to end well if they get their way. Levin and the rest of the right wing is trying to roll back the safety net by any means necessary, and to do so they’re now looking at ways of circumventing the US Congress, which is essentially deadlocked and wouldn’t be able to take up actions that would amend the US Constitution in any meaningful manner. So, they’ve turned to the states as the progenitors of amendments that would then push through the conservative agenda.

Sneaky bastards, and there’s enough state legislatures and governors who are GOPers that this strategy may have legs.

Backstory on this exchange involving Rep Shimkus:

thinkprogress.org

The comment came during an exchange about the effect of preventive services on health care premiums under the Affordable Care Act. Sebelius disputed Rep. John Shimkus’ (R-IL) claim that offering prevention benefits without cost sharing would increase beneficiaries’ health care expenses. “There is no free lunch, Madam Secretary!,” Shimkus charged. “When you mandate coverage, it is rolled directly on premiums, premiums increase, that is paying for these services!” Sebelius responded by arguing that investing in prevention could decrease costs down the road.

Shimkus grew visibly agitated by her explanation and tried to compare Sebelius to the leaders of North Korea. But rather than referencing the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Shimkus likened the Secretary to the “Republic of Korea” or South Korea, America’s ally in the region. “Alright, I got it. We’re just going to agree to disagree. It’s like talking to the Republic of Korea or something,” he said.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) loudly objected, saying that Shimkus should at least allow Sebelius to answer his questions. “I do not have to allow her to answer the question!” Shimkus screamed in reply.

That’s right folks. Invite someone to speak and give testimony, but don’t allow them to answer. Might send the wrong message.

Add to that Shimkus’ geographic illiteracy, and you’ve got a typical low-information GOP Representative who doesn’t care about facts or logic as long as he’s on a roll…

Link behind paywall, here are some choice quotes:

WHEN A racist slur was spray-painted on the home of a biracial Lunenburg High School football player last month, the reaction was predictable.

Then, after two weeks of eating their hearts out over the apparent bigotry festering in their midst, Lunenburg’s residents learned that the “hate crime” was most likely a hoax. The football team had nothing to do with the odious graffiti painted on the house, police said. Instead they suspect that the boy’s mother, Andrea Brazier, may have painted the racist taunt herself.

OK, shit like this happens (if true). Jacoby then cites a few other faked hate crimes:

nj.com
legalinsurrection.com
nydailynews.com

So he continues:

Hatred and bigotry really do exist, of course. Every society has some lowlifes and bullies. But by and large, America’s racist past is dead and gone. This is not a nation that conspires to keep blacks and women down, let alone to terrorize or humiliate them. Anyone seeking genuinely racist or misogynistic hate crimes in America today is likely to be disappointed. It is precisely because America is no longer steeped in racism that those who believe it is must resort to fakery.

Is he truly positing that the number of faked-hate-crimes far outweigh true hate crimes?

If you’re in the snow bands, you’re getting hammered. Just a bit outside, and you get… nothing. We’re going to be in this pattern until the weekend because of the arctic high pressure and winds coming in off the lakes. Skiers/snowboarders will delight, but it means folks will have to take care driving around (as if they shouldn’t do that all the time).

Also, public transportation in the Bay Area is not exactly fantastic. The system that would be most useful for Google employees heading down to the Mountain View campus from, say, SF, is Caltrain. But Caltrain is the bastard stepchild that relies on what little it can scrounge from the budgets of BART and …pretty sure there’s at least one other agency involved. So there’s been lots of issues with scheduling, with financial solvency, all that fun stuff.

The Caltrain station in SF is also all the way on the east side of the city. Good luck if you live more central/west.

BART doesn’t run far enough down the peninsula, normal busing isn’t going to work because you’re talking about transiting through 3 counties and at least 2 public transit systems from a busing viewpoint. And traffic on 101 doesn’t need any more help to be shitty.

Serious lake effect snows are beginning to pile up along the Southern Tier NY.

Of particular note:

If you’re in the snow bands, you’re getting hammered. Just a bit outside, and you get… nothing. We’re going to be in this pattern until the weekend because of the arctic high pressure and winds coming in off the lakes. Skiers/snowboarders will delight, but it means folks will have to take care driving around (as if they shouldn’t do that all the time).

I lived in Ithaca for a couple years. When I got there, I heard that everybody did cross country skiing, so I got myself a set of skis, poles, and boots. ONE TIME in TWO YEARS was there enough snow to X-C ski on. Meanwhile, we’d hear about Syracuse an hour away, getting FEET of the stuff routinely,

I am outside the snow band in East Egypt, Chicago. In some ways it sucks, cause we miss everything.

Ha, I’m 26. Part of my walking to work commute involves going through part of George Washington University’s campus. Makes me feel old. i don’t mind though. I’m at a good age.

Ha, you won’t be 26 for long! Some day you’ll be OldWarrior.

WORST EVER CHRISTMAS SONGS.

Ha! I’ve never heard even ONE of those. I’m a lucky guy, I guess.

My nominee for BEST Christmas Song ever, one we sing every year in the Smith Jockey family, is “Deck Us All With Boston Charlie”.

Lol.

Exactly what the satanists were hoping. Now they get to take the case all the way to the supremes who get to decide which are “established religions”. This could be fun.

Up for over an hour…I’m doing big time coffee, packing and playing with the dog. He is so dumb..I love him.. I can just jack him up at 5am.
So..What is the first news story I hear before even the weather? ( Weather sucks )
50% of all woman polled this morning would rather give up sex than their cell phone for a month. Men.. This is your failure..
With all the passion in the world..You came in second to a phone..
Shit..It’s so funny…
What was that 60’s song? Try a little tenderness?
It is so funny..Half of all men lose out to texting..

As performed by Otis Redding - “Try A Little Tenderness”
(The song was written in 1932)

Ooh she may be weary
And young girls they do get weary
Wearing that same old shaggy dress yeah
But when she gets weary
You gotta try a little tenderness yeah yeah

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating
The thing that she’ll never, never, never, never possess yeah yeah
But while she’s there waiting, and without them
Try just a little bit of tenderness
That’s all you gotta do
