Comedian John Stewart is 10 times better as a news anchor than anyone on Fox.

Stewart is really funny in this one.

Who are you actually talking to?

Children who are sophisticated enough to be watching a news channel at 10 o’clock at night, yet innocent enough to believe Santa Claus is real, yet racist enough to be freaked out if he isn’t white?

This.

So, so, this….

21 Justanotherhuman  Fri, Dec 13, 2013 2:53:35pm

Why even report something like this? I just assume codes can be cracked, no matter how sophisticated, if intelligence agencies want to do it. Look at the bolded para—it seems WAPO (and probably Greensnow) are probably running out of anything really relevant now. Omidyar is going to feel cheated.

By cracking cellphone code, NSA has capacity for decoding private conversations

washingtonpost.com

“Encryption experts have complained for years that the most commonly used technology, known as A5/1, is vulnerable and have urged providers to upgrade to newer systems that are much harder to crack. Most companies worldwide have not done so, even as controversy has intensified in recent months over NSA collection of cellphone traffic, including of such world leaders as German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The extent of the NSA’s collection of cellphone signals and its use of tools to decode encryption are not clear from a top-secret document provided by former contractor Edward Snowden. But it states that the agency “can process encrypted A5/1” even when the agency has not acquired an encryption key, which unscrambles communications so that they are readable.” (my emphasis)

I love eggnog…for store-bought, Land-O-Lakes (which I can’t find here in Nashville anymore) and the Southern Comfort non-alcoholic eggnog is really good.

Purity’s eggnog tastes weak and watery in comparison; Kroger’s is worse than that.

Big lump o’ sno’ blanketing the mid-state area of Illinois and parts of Missouri…heading our way. Up to another 5” is predicted. It’s been a long long time since we’ve seen this much snow in December in the Columbus area. We did this last week almost at the same time.

As far as the rest of the news today, especially the school shooting, I’m at a loss for anything to say. It all seems like the movie Groundhog Day. Bitch about ACA, war on Christmas, school shooting. Where is the good in the whole lot of it?

I look for a break in the stupidity of the politics of it all and I look for a break in whatever is causing so many to grab a gun and go shooting some people for some really pointless reasons. But I’ve got nothing. I wonder if I can even con myself by saying I have hope. I read all your comments and I am feeling like I read them so many times before. That’s not being critical of the comments. Is this the new routine?

So, I watch for the snow. Can’t do anything about it either, but at this time at least snow is real. I can go out and shovel it from my path. I know some day soon it will warm and go away.

Have a good evening all.

No kidding. Haha, it’s not the hens that laid the eggs and how they were raised, it’s how the eggs are handled. Bacteria can easily be on “free range” egg shells and get in the egg white and yolk. Supermarket eggs might be cleaner and handled less than those.

Note for those who don’t do raw eggs in nog, from another Alton Brown article on the subject:

Although my research tells me it’s very likely the alcohol will kill off any microbial baddies present from the eggs, if you have any doubts at all or if you’re going to be serving the elderly or someone with an immune disorder, buy yourself some peace of mind and simply use pasteurized shell eggs. About time these criminals are made to pay—although they can’t make up enough for the damage they’ve done over decades.

Oil company owes billions in clean-up costs

money.cnn.com

“A federal bankruptcy court in New York ruled that Anadarko owes damages between $5.15 billion and $14.12 billion, with the precise amount to be determined in future legal proceedings. The Justice Department said Friday that the judgment was “one of the largest environmental enforcement awards ever.”

“The formerly independent Kerr-McGee operated a variety of chemical and resource extraction businesses that left contamination across the country over more than eight decades, including radioactive uranium waste in the Navajo Nation and radioactive thorium in Illinois.

“In 2005 and 2006, the company transferred its valuable oil and gas exploration assets to a new corporate entity that was later acquired by Anadarko. The environmental liabilities were left with the old company, which was renamed Tronox (TROX). “

It’s not technically a macro image. Forgot what lens I used, but I probably took it at a show in Japan at least 7 years ago, which means most likely I had a zoom lens on (since carrying around a bunch of fixed focal length lenses is too burdensome.) I suspect it was the original (and very useful optically distorted) EF 28-135IS.

Mine came wit the EF-S 18-55mm and I ordered a separate Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM (which I totally love so far). I’m still fumbling around trying to figure things out though. Lots to learn, but I think I’ve finally managed to wrap my mind around some of the math needed to figure out how things translate WRT the size of the image sensor, how the human eye sees things, and how things like extension tubes will affect the minimum focus distance.

This is the worst part of this impromptu break-in of a party staged by looting teens.

Cops probe history of mounted snow leopard stolen at mansion party

latimes.com

“Sheriff’s officials are looking into whether an expensive mounted snow leopard stolen during an unauthorized party at a La Habra Heights mansion had been legally acquired by the home’s owner.

“Sixteen people were arrested Wednesday in connection with the party, during which teenage guests trashed the property and walked off with collectible medieval armor, scuba gear, designer suits and the snow leopard, valued at $250,000, authorities said.

(snip)

:Those who were arrested appeared to be “kids of means,” Baca said. The teens face a range of charges, from trespassing to grand theft, which carries a possible jail sentence.

“Some of the suspects essentially identified themselves by posting “selfies” with their loot to social media accounts to brag about their haul, officials said. The photos aided detectives’ efforts to find the suspects.”

“Kids of means” and also incorrigible idiots.

re: #11 Eclectic Cyborg

Why would Giffords husband go along with that?

Because Larry Pratt is such a crazy wingnut that Mark Kelly thinks he can come out on top in the debate. Given that the host is Chris Wallace, he may well be right about that. Wallace has shown little patience for Pratt before and Kelly may feel he has a chance to smack down a wingnut on wingnut home turf/

There’s also this:

But just hours afterwards, Senate banking committee chairman Tim Johnson and the committee’s top Republican Michael Crapo agreed with the White House that Washington should not introduce new sanctions, warning they could “rupture” international unity against Tehran’s nuclear programme.

The comments virtually assured that no new sanctions legislation would pass Congress before the year-end break, although lawmakers could introduce a new sanctions bill within the next week.

No kidding. Haha, it’s not the hens that laid the eggs and how they were raised, it’s how the eggs are handled. Bacteria can easily be on “free range” egg shells and get in the egg white and yolk. Supermarket eggs might be cleaner and handled less than those.

I imagine some “free range” egg farmers try to get around candling, but I think most states require a candling license if you’re going to sell eggs.

I mean, imagine cracking an egg for breakfast and finding a half grown embryo inside.

Happened to me once in here in China, but it was a fully grown chickie inside. I got the eggs from a local farmer. Started cracking one and noticed feathers popping out of the crack. Tossed it and picked another.
