I think that’s just reflective of the rise of recorded music. As it became popular and common place in the 40s, 50s, and 60s a lot of artists either recorded versions of Christmas classics or wrote their own Christmas songs. Since there was nothing else out there, a lot of these caught on and became “Iconic” versions.

Now, most pop music is just artist X or group Y rerecording those classic songs. There haven’t been many truly original, good Christmas songs in quite sometime.

Occasionally something will break through (like TSO’s Sarajevo 12/24) but for the most part, pop Christmas music really is tired and derivative.

The wife has Windows 8. I spent entirely too long the other day trying to figure out how to uninstall a program on it. It’s like they decided that people had gotten too good at using Windows, so they wanted to throw everyone a curve and make all the same features, but hidden so you have to look for them in places that make NO FUCKING SENSE!!!!

Like Excel and Powerpoint - I use both of those all the time at work. Got a new laptop two years ago, and wanted to be able to use it to do some work at home, so I got MS Office. BUT, it was the NEW Office, and nothing is where it’s supposed to be, and they renamed shit, like ‘autofilter’.

I am updating my third cheap laptop with Windows 8 since Thanksgiving. I bought one for myself, one for SWMBO and one as a gift for a young lady who is in the process of trying to get into college after graduating from a HS in Mexico. (She is the daughter of my sister’s good friend, and is staying at my mother’s house while taking GED classes and such)

All three laptops (two Lenovo IdeaPads and an Asus X200ca) were under $300 and have touch screens.

I am getting where things are now, but I am not using Win8 for work yet, so I haven’t been bitten by any major changes yet.

The other alternative is all your favorite songs, but done a la Joe Piscopo’s ‘Frank Sinatra sings Bruce Springsteen’.

(On the Hellevator, that is.)

Today was Challah Day. First batch is in the oven. I will put up a picture when they are all done.

I have 2 chicken breasts here. Found this recipe in one of the cookbooks in my collection and I just happened to have all the ingredients* in the pantry:

1 small jar orange marmalade (10 oz)
2 Tbsp. honey
1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp lime juice
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground pepper
3 cloves garlic, crushed

Mix together all the above ingredients and marinate the chicken breasts for 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 425.

Peel and slice 1 onion, 1 potato, 1 sweet potato, and arrange on a foil baking pan. Place the chicken breasts on top. Pour the marinade sauce over it all.

Bake for 40 minutes.

*The recipe also called for 1 orange, sliced, arranged on the bottom of the pan, but I didn’t have an orange and so I used a sweet potato.

Also have some wild rice leftover, that should go well.

And I just had a pot pie. Here comes the post pot pie blahs. [Burp.]

Pyrex makes some nifty little storage dishes with snap on lids for left overs or small portions. I’ve taken to using those more often these days. Plus microwaving food in plastic containers ends up ruining the containers too.

RBS is having a less than perfect evening. Did a custom pen just for myself, a piece of cross-cut birdseye maple with a ton of figuring in it. Turned it last night, put the finish on (20 coats of thin superglue). I wet sanded, polished and waxed it this evening and it was one of the most fantastic pieces of wood I’ve ever done. When I went to assemble the pen my heart sank.

I had put two of the bushings that set the size of the ends of the sections in the wrong order. There is no way that I can use it, and since one section is too small there is no way to turn it “UP” to size. I’m going to ponder on how I can use the pieces, but I have a feeling that it was a good practice, but I’m so let down. This was not for sale, this was my gift to me. I haven’t made a mistake like that in years.

the term “A deal is worth discussing” covers a pretty big range. I think it’s just a way that communication channels can be kept open. I’d hate to see him get anything other than the full weight of the law coming down on his head, but the operational need to get that information that was taken back under control may have priority. That also raises the issue of how can you be sure that there aren’t any copies of it left out there? Not a good situation.

Marinating boneless/skinless chicken thighs in Hoisin-garlic marinade from the Soy Vey people, but you have to goose it with more Hoisin, some Black Bean Garlic Sauce, chopped ginger, and chopped garlic. Later, I’ll broil or grill them, depending on whether I really want to bother going outside and swapping in a new propane tank.

There’s also a pair of Tri-tips, which I’ll be trying to cook to medium rare. And there’s lettuce and spinach for salad. Sadly, I’m unable to get Mrs. Jockey to believe that leaf lettuce and a homemade vinaigrette, with carrots, radishes, and sliced Kalamatas makes a good salad, but at least it’s not Iceberg lettuce with Thousand Island dressing.

Meanwhile, the older boy made a pan of fudge while we slept last night, so I got back at him by dragging him out into the light. I took him for a 2 1/2 mile walk during which he complained about how bright the sun is. One week shy of the lowest angle sun of the whole year, and it’s too much for him. Any more than that, and his skin starts to bubble and smoke like Christopher Lee in a Dracula movie.

Yes, I have some Anchor Hocking dishes like that, small to large and love them. Problem is, the plastic covers can crack on the side. Still, I prefer them to plastic (although I still collect the damn things, mainly to send food home w/others). Don’t use plastic in the microwave, either.

The way I learned from my Grandfather, who was a classicly trained chef. Rub the roasts down with a salt rub (I like the montreal steak seasoning), let it set for about 8-12 hours (Idealy). Let it come up to room temp or so, pop into a 200 degree oven for an hour a pound. Take it out, cover it, let it rest 20 minutes, slice and bask in the admiration.

It comes out a perfect Med-Rare, so juicy it’s unbelieveable. I do a sirloin tip roast like that about twice a month.

It looks like sensationalism for the sake of creating internet buzz on the party of CBS, probably not much more.

Well, I took my beloved 30 inch Apple Cinema Display into the Apple Store today, after calling some local repair shops and finding out that no independent dealer will fix it. One of the shops I called actually told me that even Apple wouldn’t fix these monitors any more because they were so out of date.

But that was wrong - Apple does fix these monitors, for a flat rate price of… feel the pain approaching… $500. Ow. And they have to ship it to a “repair depot.”

But the alternative is buying a new one. The biggest monitor Apple makes now is 27 inches, and it’s more than $1000. So I bit the bullet and went for the repair.

I also just got finished rewatching Avatar last week on TV.

It really wasn’t that good of a movie if you strip it of its once never seen before effects. How can they even think about making 3 more films, those blue guys just didn’t have a lot to warm up to imo.

Actually I’m already pretty sure it’s not the control board, because the power was still on and working fine. The USB and Firewire ports were working, and the light came on. Could be the backlighting element. In any case, it’s already committed to Apple’s tender hands.

Contrariwise, my technical issues this weekend were of a non-high-technology sort. My little Chevy seems to be suffering from a higher-than-normal oil consumption, eventually bringing about its first Check Engine Light. Nothing damaged and I got the oil situation restored to normal, but it definitely has me a little more on edge. I got a little out of the habit of checking the oil because it was always so consistent, but it is starting to show its miles now and this winter has been hard.

My grandson uses a 24 in flat screen tv for his computer and a 39 in flat screen TV for his gaming. Priorities.

I use a 24 in LG flat screen monitor; quite enough when you consider I just converted from a clunker of a 15 in last year (the LG was a discard from one of his friends for $20—yes, I’m cheap). Unfortunately, the munchkin used a ball point to draw on the lower right quadrant yesterday. You can’t see it except when light shines on it, though; doesn’t affect the image—yet. I cleaned off the ink with no trouble, but the impressions are there.

What sort of cover do you expect to find in a classroom? I’ve been in modern classrooms, they don’t come with concrete barriers or sandbags. Yeah, this. I buy a lot of things on my credit card if they are things I’m not going to be able to pay for in cash. Store financing has kind of gone the way of the dodo with the ridiculous interest rates and the popularity of cash-back/reward-points cards.

Oh, and I know that Amex will automatically extend insurance coverage for a year longer than whatever the warranty is on goods. Other credit cards might have something similar. That can come in handy too on more expensive purchases.

I must say though - I’ve owned a lot of computers (built a few, too) and monitors and there’s no doubt that Apple makes the finest hardware in the US.

Store credit cards makes sense if you’re going to get discounts/coupons along the way. Kohls and Macys put out coupons just for credit card holders. Apple very rarely discounts anything they sell. Because they go with the lifestyle (their lifestyle, not how anyone buying their products lives).

My mom has a Kohl’s card which is wonderful, so those sorts of programs I understand. My Sears card, on the other hand, has lain in a drawer since the day I opened it. Of course, I don’t shop that much at Sears, but still. It’s just not worth it.

I haven’t bought anything on credit for almost 20 yrs. And never will again. Living on a very small budget has taught me to be appreciative of what I have and not wasteful, to take care of things. That’s not a moralistic statement, just that it makes sense to me environmentally and in other ways, like preserving my sanity knowing everything is paid for, even if it’s second hand, which I don’t mind. I’ve gotten some really nice things I couldn’t afford new at my local thrift store. Hell, I’m not going to take it with me. : )

One thing that must be done, guns or not, is that teachers need some training in dealing with an active shooter situation. For grade and middle schools, that should only extend to staff, but high schools should have a school-wide drill at least once a year. I don’t like it, but nothing deals with panic like training.

And that’s fair. These things do happen. Debit cards are perfectly fine, and I made heavy use of mine back when I was still struggling to get the balance paid off on the credit card. Believe it or not, 2013 is the first year where I will not have had a balance for the entire year.

On the subject of usurious interest rates… when I was in the Army one of my soldiers lost his car to a “title loan” joint. They lent him 1000 bucks on a nice little ford escort, nothing special, but a good solid car. The interest rate was 24.98% per MONTH. He had a 250 dollar payment each month just to cover the interest. Worst part, the bastards let him re-fi the first couple of payments, so when he finally came to me, he was at something like 300 per month in interest alone.

It’s legal in TN (I think they may have changed the laws since then), because it wasn’t technically a loan, he had pawned the title, and this was the ‘service charge’. He ended up losing the car and I know it had to have sold for probably 5k or so.

Totally agree! The free access to movies and TV shows makes it more than worth the price, IMO. And the iPhone app works great too.
