Immune to satire, Tea Party group posts Bioshock Infinite picture on Facebook

Because the idiots took it seriously
Wingnuts • Views: 23,579

Kotaku reports that a Tea Party group in Florida posted a picture from the game Bioshock Infinite on their Facebook page.

For those who aren’t familiar with it, Bioshock Infinite is a game that takes place in a 1912 in a flying city by the name of Columbia. It’s run by a man who is a cross between Bryan Fischer and Pat Buchanan. The place is a racist, sexist theocracy. When I played the game it seriously creeped me out.

So these Tea Partiers took an image from what is essentially a condemnation of their stance and posted it as a serious display of their beliefs.

These are really stupid people.

Foreign Hordes?

For people who like to say everything they get called out for is “SATIRE”, they certainly don’t seem to recognize it when it actually shows up.

How many of the 50/60 plus year old TPers will be familiar with Bioshock?

I know older people play games, but I question how many in the TP demographic are avid gamers.

Next step: play Nine Inch Nails’ “Year Zero” as a celebration of our heritage as a “Christian Nation”.

OT: How to destroy your business in less than a week

1. Release an update to a popular paid for App of yours
2. Be deluged with angry complaints in the App store reviews because the update causes instant crashing for everyone running iOS 7 and up.
3. Let three days go by and do absolutely nothing to address the problem.
4. See your App store score tank to 1 star, thus killing your chances of many future downloads.

And the crappy thing about this is I quite liked the app beforehand.

Well, I had a wonderful day yesterday. I spent several hours at the Shelter helping groups of the kids of Foreign Hordes shop (from donated) for gifts for their mothers. Guess what, all of them spoke English and were absolutely wonderful.

We all said Merry Christmas and drank punch like normal people!

The teenagers were amazing.

9 StephenMeansMe  Mon, Dec 16, 2013 11:19:25am

Sort of like a reverse Poe’s law situation: when an actual wingnut can’t tell the difference between his own ideology and satire of it.

10 Ian G.  Mon, Dec 16, 2013 11:19:34am

The Native American chief as part of the “foreign hordes” is a nice touch. Too bad it went over the heads of the teabaggers.

And unoriginal bastards without a truly creative bone in their bodies, to boot.

They’re reduced to co-opting an image from/about a game that mocks just about everything that they stand for, but I seriously doubt that they’d care, even if they had a clue.

Columbia’s created much in the same way Rapture was, as a living embodiment of all that was wrong with a particular philosophy, in this case it could be either “American Exceptionalism” or jingoism. If you can think of anything that was wrong with America at the time, Columbia not only has it, it’s probably ramped up to 11. Like the company town that Fink operates, where the bosses pretty much tell the workers (all either foreigners or minorities) that they’re there only because they serve a useful purpose and can never expect to be accepted as a citizen of Columbia.

Holy crap. That’s some racist imagery.

Because Columbia in Bioshock Infinite is incredibly racist. IIRC an interracial couple gets publicly stoned to death, John Wilkes Booth is considered a hero, and people there throw baseballs at black people for sport. It’s an over-the-top hyperpatriotic cult.

Maybe the teabaggers saw kindred spirits in Columbia.

This. It’s probably a deliberate satire of the knuckedraggers’ inability to tell Muslims and Sikhs apart.

Another nice touch. The more I look at it, the more impressed I am with it. I also imagine the resemblance to John McNaughton “art” was an intentional spoof of his dreck.

Indeed, any time I want to reference the flaws in individualism, I just point to Bioshock and Rapture. The big flaw in the city Ryan built is that the philosophy that everybody has the same chance to make it big clashes with the reality that there has to be somebody to do the dirty work.

There is one thing that has always bugged me about the “Crown of Thorns.”

In Christian paintings, the “Crown of Thorns” is so sharp that it causes the blood to run down Jesus’s face.

So HOW DID THE ROMANS MAKE IT? Did they have heavy leather “thorn craft” gloves? And wouldn’t wearing protective gloves kind of prevent them from braiding it so meticulously?

Seriously, though - apparently it requires a teacher leading prayer for anyone to pray in schools. Individual children praying won’t do it. So, just as clearly, it’s not about “not letting God in school’, it’s about not forcing Protestant Christianity on school children.

I saw Gretchen Carlson talking about having to explain a Festivus pole to her children, when they were ‘driving around looking for Nativity scenes’ (?). Talk about the height of privilege, to bitch about having to explain other beliefs to your children, while expecting everyone who believes differently from you to suck it up and explain YOUR superstitions to their children.

Meet ‘wacko bird’ Greg Brannon, the tea party’s secession-backing, public school-hating hopeful

The extremely conservative Brannon opposes public education, which he says is Marxist and dehumanizes students, and doesn’t believe states must follow Supreme Court decisions.

Brannon cosponsored and spoke at a rally in October supporting nullification - the idea that states can invalidate any federal laws they wish - that was also sponsored by the secessionist League of the South group that is seeking “a free and independent Southern republic.”

The group complains on its website that the federal government has since 1861 - the start of the Civil War — attempted to strip states of their individual sovereignty and compromised individual religious expression and freedom of association.

“We envision the States peacefully and lawfully exercising their Right of self-determination and withdrawing from the present union dominated by an aggressive, centralized federal government; only then can a true constitutional republic, founded upon the Bible and the original constitution, once again exist in America,” the group states among its goals.

Brannon, an obstetrician and gynecologist who refuses to advise his patients on contraception or abortions, said the Supreme Court has claimed powers it doesn’t have.

“Just because nine people in black robes, seven of them voted that abortion is in the Constitution, it does not make that law,” Brannon said.

For people who like to say everything they get called out for is “SATIRE”, they certainly don’t seem to recognize it when it actually shows up.

It’s not really satire as far as they’re concerned: Some of those Floridians would actually be happy serving as the fictional Zachary Comstock’s enforcers. To some people, serving a leader who claims to know everything is attractive, and the so is the prospect of getting to visit violence upon ‘the other’.

Yes, I’m assuming it wasn’t voluntary because of embarrassment. I’ll have to ask the next time I run into the developers over drinks. What a great game, btw.

Edit: OMG, a comment from them to explain why they took it down:

To all the publications and visitors to our site who wrote about our post of December 14th, regarding the “BioShock Infinite” Propaganda.

We have a zero tolerance policy on racism and have removed the post, as it has done its job. We are not the “Red Cross” and firmly believe that the Constitution and the future of America is at stake. The reality is our voice is rarely heard in the media let alone in DC. Thus we are and will remain unapologetically Constitutionalists.

We want to let you know you brought us the best site advertisement we’ve had all year… We were litterally flooded with new people not only laughing at us, which we expected, but also congratulating us on seeing things differently and having the guts to post it…

We invite all the media to visit us whenever you need a good story and hopefully all the hordes of people will follow you as well… It’s time they heard the other side of DC politics and if our plan works, we should be gaining many new readers now that they know we’re here.

One more thing MSNBC, we are the National Liberty Federation, not the National Liberation Foundation… Get it right next time!!!

In Liberty,
The Team at NL
