Republican Party Plans Fewer Debates, Dumber Reporters

Republicans look to limit media access for message control.
Politics • Views: 15,672

According to Peter Hamby of CNN, a special party subcommittee is considering dramatically reducing the number of Republican debates and taking control over which journalists get to moderate them.

This is not being done in the name of reform. This is being done in the name of “let’s stop kicking ourselves in the groin.”

The theory goes like this: The more the public sees the potential Republican nominees for president, the more the public tends to dislike them. One reason is that the potential Republican nominees dislike the potential Republican nominees.

In February 2012, Newt Gingrich, while running for the Republican nomination, said that Mitt Romney was “fundamentally dishonest” and “pro-abortion, pro-gun control and pro-tax increase.”

Accusing a politician of being fundamentally dishonest is like accusing a ballerina of dancing on her toes. No big deal. But accusing a Republican of being for abortion, against guns and for taxes is serious stuff. Naturally, Romney had to prove that he was none of those things.

Read the whole thing.

My own view is that this is a result of the quest for political purity. If the great majority of a party’s candidates fall into a narrow ideological spectrum, then differentiating yourself becomes in most ways stylistic, and the surest way to sink a rival is to get people to see him or her as being outside that spectrum.

They know that Chris Christie is the only candidate who stands a chance at the national level, they do not want to see him picked apart by his own party before he is even nominated.

I expect the Tea Partying base to see through this and push their own debates anyway. The RNC can not dictate if candidates want to “debate” on some TV show or not.

That one jumped out at me, too.

Once again, it’s more of the “Don’t change the policy, just change the image” idiocy.

Not that it keeps the alleged “moderates” from willingly voting the nut jobs into office, and then wringing their hands about it later.

I think they should have more debates. The debate-a-week thing was awesome…better than Survivor, better than Big Brother, better even than Honey Boo Boo. Though in all fairness I think Honey Boo Boo has a better chance of being elected President than any of the current GOP contenders.

Who will get voted off the podium next week? Stay tuned! Pure comedic brilliance on the part of the GOP.

Or are the Republicans planning fewer debates with the Democratic candidate? Therein lies their true problem.

More debates means the public gets more time to get familiar with the candidates.

If your candidates are likeable and knowledgeable and have positions the majority of people agree with then more debates is good. If these things are not true then you should go for fewer debates.

I think it informative that the GOP is deciding which its situation will be this far out.

Christie coming under fire for bridge closures.

theweek.com

“Now he’s caught in an even more bizarre scandal in which his allies at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey allegedly closed a portion of the nation’s busiest bridge for five days in September as political payback, causing horrendous traffic jams for one town and its intransigent mayor.

“The scuttlebutt started over the summer when Mark Sokolich, mayor of Fort Lee, New Jersey, declined to follow the lead of dozens of other Democrats around the state and endorse Christie’s re-election bid. Soon after, two of the three access lanes to the George Washington Bridge — which connects Fort Lee to New York City — mysteriously shut down, snarling traffic and turning the town into a parking lot.

“The state claimed the closure was part of a traffic study. One problem: Multiple Port Authority officials subsequently testified that there was no such study.”

Two officials in his admin have resigned.

Some are calling for a Federal investigation.

If you had confidence in your contenders and your message, if you thought people would like it/them… you’d want them to have as much exposure as possible.

Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton benefitted mightily from extending their primaries all the way to the end, in spite of the fact that the math was clear barely halfway through (and what they were able to do with voter registration drives, directly linked to those primaries… that’s how a black democrat won North Carolina and Indiana.)

I’m curious to see how Christie will try to wriggle out of this one. My guess was he figured the two resignations would be where it ended. Doesn’t look that way.

I hate to say it, but I think Rick Perry will be back for the next round.

I just don’t see him going down as bad as he did without another shot at it.
The rumors may be true that he was on drugs (pain meds) over back surgery.
Although the man is an idiot, I have never seen him perform so badly…the ooops moment. Remember his exuberance over the maple syrup? He certainly appeared to be high on something.

Also, as he will be out of office almost 2 years by the time the election comes around, he will be rested and ready. If George W can win the nomination, Perry could too. Especially with fewer debates!

Dumb reporters? Just look at the first Romney/Obama debate. Mitt lied his ass off and all the “pundits” could talk about was how “flustered” and “ineffective” Obama was. Not a peep about Mitt tripping his little brains out and showing he lives in a parallel dimension. Screw the steak. We sell sizzle.

So I guess this means all gop debates will be on Fox News.

Not that there aren’t dumb reporters at ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC. But on those networks they at least want some action in their debates, so they’ll ask tough questions about wedge issues like gay rights and immigration. Fox will give them all the usual softballs, but having all 4 or 6 debates on one network would be a joke.

The last Republican debate season was insanely long. All the serious candidates have said whatever they wanted to within the first half dozen or so debates, the rest is mostly repetition. Also, both parties would be smart to limit the unelectable nutty candidates. Ron Paul, Mike Gravel, Al Sharpton and Michelle Bachman can be good entertainment value but they take up valuable time from the serious candidates.

Ron Paul wasn’t the only one making the whole process look silly. And he doesn’t really meet the definition of a fringe candidate. He may have fringe ideas, but he had enough supporters within the gop that he easily met the thresholds for participation.

The number of Republican debates wasn’t unprecedented. Both parties had about the same number back in 2008. What was different back then was fewer insane candidates saying fewer extreme things that reflected badly on the party.

Bottom line: the 2012 problem wasn’t too many debates. It was the debaters and what they were saying.

It was useful, though. As each of the brief leaders bobbed to the surface, the hot light of attention turned on them and you got to see how they’d fare. Noot in particular was very popular with the wingnuts who were practically wetting their pants to see him turn his vaunted debate skills on Obama. Then Mitt went after him in a debate and he folded like a cheap suit.

157 krypto  Tue, Dec 17, 2013 5:27:05pm

It seems to me that the main problem that Republicans have with so many debates is that Republican candidates in a primary debate have to compete for appealing to the far rightwing part of their base. The more they say stuff to please the tea party and fellow travelers, the more unpalatable they seem to normal middle American voters in the general election.

So what does he do with the lizards? In addition to raising them with love and care, Henry poses them in lizard-size lounge chairs. They remain statue-still and he photographs them, sells greeting cards and writes lizard care manuals.

Just finished a very relaxing spell in the workshop. Fired up the lathe, chucked in some old wood and just did basic turning exercises. Sort of like a guitar player just doing scales, then a variation, then a change on that.

I wasn’t trying to “make” anything, just getting nice smooth curves, good sharp changes of direction, and working on my techniques. Had gotten really rusty doing the same basic things again and again, needed to just make wood turn into little shavings, and woosh, into the air duct it goes.

Felt good to just relax and go with the flow. Much more relaxed than when I got home this evening. Now to enjoy an evening with the lizards.

And the GOP’s Bubble of Epistemic Closure (tm) gets smaller and smaller and…

Debates serve two purposes: they rally the base, and they sell the party’s message to the undecided.

(Okay, they also sell popcorn to the opposition party, but still…)

By cutting the number of debates, they’re cutting into the amount of Free Media the debates produce. They’re cutting the number of times they could repeat their message, and they’re cutting off access to the undecided.

In other words… please proceed, GOP.

179 BusyMonster  Wed, Dec 18, 2013 6:49:44am

Now all we need is a Democratic candidate smart enough to fill in the narrative where these guys won’t, like Obama did, and they’re done.

Avoiding the public during an election is STUPID. The purpose of the election is for us to choose whose views we agree with. Concealing those views is no longer working.
