Help Support LGF by Christmas Shopping With Our Amazon Links

LGF • Views: 19,035

Here we are, suddenly a week away from Christmas, and if you’re anything like me you’re not done shopping for friends and family yet. If that’s the case, and you don’t want to fight the crowds, may I suggest Amazon via the LGF Associate link? This way you can take advantage of their excellent holiday bargains and support Little Green Footballs at the same time (at no extra cost).

Amazon gift cards are always good last-minute stocking-stuffers:

But you do still do have time to get something delivered too; here are some links to other Amazon departments you might be interested in:

It’s hard to believe I can walk two blocks and get a roast beef burrito with about a third of a pound of meat and as much pico de gallo as the tortilla will hold (more than it could hold, actually) for $3.75. I always leave the quarter in the tip jar, so $4.00.

Grace Cock Flavored Soup Mix - 1.76 OZ: Grocery & Gourmet Food

Invited my parents and inlaws over for a get together

By ReeVueBoi on February 18, 2012

When my parents and inlaws arrived for dinner the aroma of cock had already filled the house.

My mother-in-law was immediately excited..It was a surprise to her..and she really loves all things cock.

I must admit I was worried the taste wouldn’t live up to the amazing aroma. I was worried for nothing..

They were all begging for my secret…I’ll never tell

They couldn’t believe you could get such a real cock flavor without the real thing. I explained it had natural flavors and they were a bit shocked..and somewhat worried.

All in all it was a great dinner…a great experience. Now I just have to find a way to keep them from wanting to eat dinner at my house all the time.

Slightly grubby swan on the ice - I love watching the big birds lose all dignity coming in to land on ice
(And continuing from downstairs, this valley is one the RAF flies the Tucano trainer down - painted black like all RAF trainers, I get severe job envy!)
The big house is Allen Bank, Wordsworth condemned it as an eyesore when it was being built, then moved into it when he got a bit of money.

Who asked for a pony?

This would be Brooklyn Supreme.

Brooklyn Supreme, a Belgian Draft stallion foaled in 1928, measured 19.2 hands, 6 feet 6 inches, 198 cms, and weighed 3,200 pounds, 1455 kilograms. “Brookie” wore a 40-inch collar and boasted a girth measurement of 10 feet, 2 inches around. It took 30 inches of iron for each of his horseshoes.

Foaled in 1928, he eventually became the property of C.G. Good of Iowa. Good’s partner, Ralph Fogleman, exhibited the big horse around the country, charging spectators 10 cents apiece. Brookie died in 1948.

Unicorn Meat FAQs…..

Q: How much meat is needed to feed another unicorn?
A: You should not feed unicorn meat to another unicorn. - You will end up with Mad Unicorn Disease (MUD) and no rainbows.

Q: Is this legal to purchase in New York? Can we eat it here too?
A: No. But if you go see Vinny at Sarducci’s Deli on 23rd and tell him Pauly sent you, he’ll take you to a back room. You’ll have to shoot the unicorn yourself, but they’ll take care of the processing and packaging.

Speaking of Amazon, it sort of amazes me that they sell advertisement to other companies for display on the pages.

Anyway, this Dunkin’ Donuts ad came up:

Look at that coffee, carefully. Doesn’t it look like tar to you? Fresh, not weathered (watered) tar that is dull, but nice shiny tar.

It probably is tar. When you look closely at food photos, they often don’t look quite as appetizing as they do at a quick glance. That is because they are often not actually what they purport to be-I understand “milk” on cereal is made of diluted white glue, burgers tend to be stone cold and brushed with oil, etc.

Yay, Missouri GOP/TP!

Republican Congresswoman refuses to stand near picture of President Obama

A GOP Tea Party Congresswoman is so afraid of President Obama’s picture that she would not remain in a room with it on display. This level of disrespect is all too common since the Tea Party swept into the House in 2010, including Missouri Rep. Vicky Hartzler. It’s as if she thinks Obama’s black hand may reach out and touch her.

Hartzler (R-MO) told a crowd of her constituents in 2012, that she is no more convinced of President Obama’s birth place as anyone asking the question. She said, “I have doubts that it is really his real birth certificate.”

He can come back to the US and be sure that if the government should try to charge him with a crime, the laws he broke will just be overlooked because the one he didn’t like was ruled “likely unconstitutional” by a judge that you flayed alive years prior.

This should be good for a laugh:

McCain Introduces Obamacare Repeal And Replacement Legislation

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Wednesday that he would introduce a bill to repeal Obamacare and replace it with his own set of reforms.

It appears to be the first comprehensive health care reform legislation that McCain has introduced during his three decades in Congress. It is composed of conservative pet policies, such as tax credits for individuals and tort reform to stem medical malpractice lawsuits. The bill comes as Republicans attempt to beat back criticism that they don’t have a viable alternative to the Affordable Care Act.

McCain boasted that Douglas Holtz-Eakin, president of the conservative American Action Forum and the chief economic advisor to his 2008 presidential campaign, had concluded that the bill would save taxpayers $2.37 trillion in its first decade.

A formal bill has not yet been filed, but McCain offered a description on the Senate floor and said it would be a companion to a bill introduced by Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) in the House. The central tenet, tax credits for purchasing health coverage, was also included in McCain’s 2008 presidential platform.

It should be noted that the Price bill mentioned is actually out there, and has already had more than one constitutional lawyer laughing their asses off at the idea that the federal government would take control of state juries to limit all malpractice suit awards to $250K.

One of the major science newsy things today:

The complete genome sequence of a Neanderthal from the Altai Mountains

We present a high-quality genome sequence of a Neanderthal woman from Siberia. We show that her parents were related at the level of half-siblings and that mating among close relatives was common among her recent ancestors. We also sequenced the genome of a Neanderthal from the Caucasus to low coverage. An analysis of the relationships and population history of available archaic genomes and 25 present-day human genomes shows that several gene flow events occurred among Neanderthals, Denisovans and early modern humans, possibly including gene flow into Denisovans from an unknown archaic group. Thus, interbreeding, albeit of low magnitude, occurred among many hominin groups in the Late Pleistocene. In addition, the high-quality Neanderthal genome allows us to establish a definitive list of substitutions that became fixed in modern humans after their separation from the ancestors of Neanderthals and Denisovans.

I think that probably varied from horse to horse. I’ve made infrequent visits to his place over the past twenty years. Some of the horses are much more aggressive and/or annoying than others. They all have their own personalities that you can get to know.

If you went walking out in the pastures they would normally come over to see you once they noticed you. The mares would usually then just wander off back to grazing. The younger males would tend to follow you around longer and possibly get a little mischievous. You generally didn’t hang out wiht the older stallions since they tended to be the more aggressive ones - and a few would bite you if you weren’t looking out.

Yeah - if the very first thing in your tweet is a user’s address, starting with the @ symbol, only people who are following BOTH you and the person you’re addressing will see the tweet.

That’s why people sometimes put a period in front of the first user address, so that it isn’t interpreted as a direct reply to that user, and will be seen by all followers.

While that is a widely held belief, “inbreeding” is too vague of a term.

From the BBC article on this Nature paper:

Other scenarios are possible though, including that her parents were an uncle and niece or aunt and nephew, a grandparent and grandchild, or double first-cousins (the offspring of two siblings who married siblings).

This results if inferred from the highly homozygous genome that was recovered.

Before modern times, many families were the result of cousin marriage.

Bloomberg too runs with the sensationalism:

Ancient Toe Bone Shows Incest Role in Neanderthal Decline

The findings suggest the population of Neanderthals was small, making inbreeding more common among them than among ancestors of modern humans, said David Reich, a study author and professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School in Boston. The low levels of genetic diversity also may have made them less fit over the long run, leading to their extinction, although that is still conjecture, Reich said.

Yes, but the risk of birth defects doubles in cousin marriages, even though they’re legal in most countries, including many states in the US. It’s the same risk as that of women who have children when they’re over 40, 4-6%.

I think “cousin” marriages were more likely a function of arranged marriages which included social, religious and economic considerations. People in earlier times didn’t have the means to get around as we do in modern times and often didn’t leave the county they were born in.

That’s a tough one because AFAIK there is not enough data on Neanderthal mortality to come to any conclusion.

The high infant mortality among modern humans in the West from Antiquity up to the modern era may be the product of high population density and poor sanitation. Humans living more sparsely and in a hunter-gatherer society are not the same thing. Ancient hominid population density is not something which can be stated with high confidence, I think.

Wisconsin ranked 37th in private sector job growth

Wisconsin is ranked 37th in private sector job growth over the 12-month period that ended in June.
Figures released Wednesday from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show private sector job growth in Wisconsin between June 2012 and June 2013 grew by 1 percent. That ranks it 37th nationally, just ahead of Mississippi and below New Hampshire.

North Dakota had the highest increase at 3.7 percent while West Virginia was the worst with a drop of 0.7 percent. The national rate was 1.9 percent.

Wisconsin added 23,963 jobs over the period.

Keep in mind that Walker promised 250,000 new jobs by the end of his term. Best guesstimate right now is that he’s maybe close to the halfway mark, with 14 months to go. That means employers in the state would have to go on a hiring binge to make the deadline.

Executive Director of the ACLU = Major Dudebro.

Edward Snowden is a patriot.

As a whistleblower of illegal government activity that was sanctioned and kept secret by the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government for years, he undertook great personal risk for the public good. And he has single-handedly reignited a global debate about the extent and nature of government surveillance and our most fundamental rights as individuals.

[…]

First, many thoughtful observers note that Snowden has revealed important facts about an otherwise clandestine program, but wonder why he took it upon himself to bring his evidence to journalists rather than to Congress or the executive branch. The simple answer is that Snowden was too smart to expect real results from the “official” channels.

Walking Dead The Best Defense Board Game

The Best Defense is a cooperative board game in which players take on the roles of Rick, Glenn, Daryl, Michonne and other characters. The Survivors must defend four key locations from Walkers - the Farm, the Prison, the Town and the Highway - in order to stay alive. The game board is assembled at random for each game, providing for variability in the locations; a 25-card resource deck - containing either Equipment, Allies, Food or Ammunition - is placed at random on one of the locations.

The problem would be competition for those jobs with those who don’t need the aid. There are a lot of places that only hire 18 year olds and up. Jobs for teenagers, in general, is a problem. IMHO.

Here’s an even better zombie game for the fannish runner:

It’s an app/podcast/game for your smartphone — it tells you stories of the other characters, describes the damaged buildings and chewed up people you’re passing as you jog, there’s a radio station that pulls songs from your favorites list, it uses GPS, and every so often it yells ZOMBIES!! RUN!! and you have to increase your speed by 20% for at least 2 minutes or they catch you.

Sometimes I think they did away with vocational tracks to avoid training girls for those professions. I had to fight to get into drafting and woodshop classes in high school.

We weren’t even supposed to think about it in the ’50s, even though my mother, aunts and grandmother worked during WWII doing “men’s work”. : )

Actual comment from wingnut over at Huffpo article:

“Kingston’s plan could create significant embarrassment for low-income children, who would be sweeping cafeteria floors while their wealthier peers did normal kid activities.”

Normal activities like part-time jobs? Stock work at the local Walgreens? We’re talking high school kids that are trying to scrape together gas money for the old jalopy they drive, or even to buy that old jalopy!

Do liberals actually understand the meaning and value of work?

I have “no” open Amazon orders.
Each email notification references a order #
Upon opening I see that same order # is not repeated but other numbers appear. Also they say I can click on Amazon.com (provided) to make any changes. These are obviously phony.
Anyone else getting these?

Target Looking Into Security Breach

bits.blogs.nytimes.com

SAN FRANCISCO — Target is investigating a security breach involving stolen credit card and debit card information for millions of its customers, according to one person involved in the investigation.

“The breach, which was first reported Wednesday by Brian Krebs, a security blogger, began Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and may be ongoing, according to the person involved in the investigation who was not authorized to speak about it.

“It is unclear whether Target’s online customers were affected. Cybercriminals appear to have targeted the point-of-sale systems in Target’s retail stores, which collect information from customers’ credit and debit cards, and potentially personal identification numbers, or PINs.”

Those constitute the 2nd & 3rd lenses I’ve bought (in addition to the 18-55mm kits lens) since I go the camera a week ago.

Plus, I ordered around $150 of other gear. I tend to go overboard with new hobbies. Time to freaking stop.

Exclusive: Top Senate Democrats Break with White House and Circulate New Iran Sanctions Bill

Three top senators, including two Democrats, have begun circulating a draft of a new Iran sanctions bill that critics say could violate the terms of an agreement struck between Iran and the United States in Geneva last month. The bill, set for introduction by the Democratic chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Robert Menendez of New Jersey, along with top sanctions hawks Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), defies the Obama administration’s repeated requests for Congress to hold off on any new legislation that could imperil last month’s interim nuclear pact with Iran while talks continue toward a comprehensive final deal. A copy of the bill, dubbed the Iran Nuclear Weapon Free Act of 2013, was obtained by Foreign Policy. The new sanctions, some of which amend the Pentagon budget on the cusp of passing Congress, are unlikely to come to a vote in the Senate this week in the final days of the 2013 session. Instead, the Senate would likely consider the measure after it returns on Jan. 6.

The Knights of Columbus: Crusaders for Discrimination

Some have charged that certain Knights of Columbus expenditures ignore the needs of parishes and parishioners. This was the case with the $3 million grant the order made to the US bishops for an antiabortion campaign run by Hill & Knowlton, a major public relations firm—billed as a public information campaign. More recently, the Knights’ pursuit of a slanted version of “religious freedom” is expressed in a rhetoric of persecution and isolation.
… .
There has always been a certain tension between these values. Around
1910, anti-Catholic sentiments grew within the largely Protestant Progressive movement. Around the same time, the Supreme Knight, in a speech to an organizational assembly, declared that the Knights had a responsibility to fight the rise of socialism because socialism equated to anti-Catholicism, a view echoed in the Knights’ newspaper, the Columbiad. The notion of “Columbianism,” which sought to draw a connection between a free-market brand of patriotism and Catholicism, became cemented within the order.

I just got an OLD 70-210 F4. Made in ‘99, super nice lens. No IS of course, and I had forgotten how much I have gotten used to that. Had to go back to basics. Thing is, they only made that particular lens for about 3 years, then released a less expensive version of it. It’s not “L” series glass, but probably 80% the image quality for about 20% the price.

It is easy to go overboard, when I started I worked at it for years with a 28-84 (17-55 equiv), a 70-210 (40-130 equiv), a 50 and a 2x doubler. Handled pretty much everything I needed. Now my standard lens is a 17-85 on the T1i and a 15-85 on the 60d. I’ll toss the 17-55 on if I’m indoors and want something a bit lighter. The 70-210 covers all I need in distance (Hell that’s the equiv of a 300+mm lens back in film. If I can’t get it with that, I’m too far away.

I do have one of the worst lenses canon ever made however. I’ve an old 24-90 from one of the first series of rebel cameras. It’s sliver and I’ll just say that the image is a bit soft. I actually do like it for some people pics I’ve done where a little less detail is a good thing. I think I paid 40 bucks for it, and it’s worth it.

Have fun, remember however, it’s all about seeing the image, refining it, and then making the picture. Digital makes it easy to shoot a ton, but I still go out sometimes and try to make everyone “JUST” what I was trying for. Don’t come close, but it’s a good exercise.
