New Mexico State Supreme Court Rules Same-Sex Marriage Legal

‘We hold that the State of New Mexico is constitutionally required to allow same-gender couples to marry…’

The New Mexico Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage, legalizing it throughout the state.

The ruling was handed down Thursday, capping off a whirlwhind few months that catapulted New Mexico into the national discussion on same-sex marriage. This makes New Mexico the 17th state in the country to legalize same-sex marriage.

[…]

The ruling denied an argument that same-sex marriage would be detrimental to children and said that saying they could not procreate is not a valid argument.

Hell, four different states have provided for gay marriage since Minnesota enacted their same-sex marriage statute.

THAT WAS 140 DAYS AGO.

Yep.

The last places to allow it will be in the Bible Belt, and that most likely will only come about as the result of a SCOTUS ruling.

Good on New Mexico.

I remember back during the Bush admin, when there was so much rejoice from the wingnuts about this state or that one passing laws or amendments to their constitutions banning gay marriage. Declared MA to be the lone hold-out and the “tide turning” in favor of a federal ban.

I figure in less than a decade from now, SCOTUS will make a ruling in favor of SSM nationwide, holding that state or local laws against SSM are unconstitutional, and striking them all down in one fell swoop.

And that’s that.

25 Ian G.  Thu, Dec 19, 2013 11:55:21am
The ruling denied an argument that same-sex marriage would be detrimental to children and said that saying they could not procreate is not a valid argument.

So in other words, the ruling expressed common fucking sense.

If the gay-marriage opponents were going to come up with a decent argument against it (and “THE BIBLE SAYS SO!” is not a decent argument in a secular republic), they probably would have by now. It’s over. Mississippi will have gay marriage within 2 decades. Maybe one.

Great. That makes 17 states (plus DC) and counting.

The contrast between red and blue states is astonishing. Of the ~25 blue states, 70% now have same sex marriage, and most other blue states have civil unions.

Of the ~25 red states, zero percent have gay marriage. None even have civil unions. Talk about two Americas, one moving forward (along with most of the rest of the developed world)…and the other firmly stuck in the past, unwilling to budge even in the case of committed people who love each other.

Before too long, the entire north will have SSM or at least civil unions, as well as many western states.

OTOH, the south has none of this. The map on marriage equality is beginning to look like a pre-civil war map: free states in the north, slave states in the south. Really sad for half the country. But a civil rights victory for the other half.

I would wager that within 5 years, you see a split in the “red” states, as the non-Mormon mountain west states with their “let me do as I want on my land and shoot what critters I want” ethos will drop the resistance to gays being married. The Bible Belt will hold firm much longer.

Keep an eye on Montana. For whatever reason, I feel like it would be the most open to gay marriage of the blood-red states.

When I was 18 and home over the Xmas holidays, someone broke into the house while I was home alone during the day (I did what you are NEVER supposed to do, and pretended like no one was home because I didn’t recognize the truck or the guys in it). I was talking to a friend on the phone when the incessant knocking stopped and I heard the sound of wood cracking and saw the shadow of the front door swing open. While one guy drove the truck into the backyard, the other came walking into the hallway and saw me crouched beside the bed, on the phone waiting for a 911 operator. He ran, jumped in the truck, and they sped off.

I have often thought how differently that day could have turned out if either one of us had had a gun.

I always tell people my view on gun ownership is shaped by experience, not fear of what MIGHT happen.

What we should not shy away from is that Phil Robertson articulated very Biblical doctrine. He referenced scripture. Homosexual acts are, in fact, sinful according to the Bible. And as society begins to openly tolerate as normal things that really are not normal behaviors, society tends to start loosening up across the board as it descends down a slippery slope.

This is such wonderful news!

We couldn’t have imagined 45 years ago that this would be happening and SSM would be a reality—that was a dream.

Lesbians and gays had to sneak around to the couple of gay bars to meet up and then had to put up with the straights who came to ogle, or the “bi-curious” types. We did open a women’s center in 1971 for various reasons, and so it didn’t have to be a bar scene for women and there was support.

That’s straight up Westboro Baptist theology right there. The WBC nutters are convinced that when the world ends, they will be the only ones standing at God’s side and they will cast judgement on everyone else, sending the rest of the world to Hell.

To some extent, but its roots are specifically from Dominionism/Christian Reconstructionism. Their founder, R J Rushdoony was a far right bigot with leanings toward antisemitism and Christian Identity-flavored racism. Its tenets are the foundation of the organizations that set policy for the Religious Right. They have repeatedly stated that their ultimate goal is to make the US into their own version of an Christian Theocracy.

That’s my prediction as well; that eventually, SSM will be settled along the lines of Loving v. Virginia.

Not to mention that a state allowing/banning SSM will start having economic/business effects. Like couples married in a SSM-allowing state refusing to relocate or transfer to one that does not recognize it.

Hmm, by that measure I expect Florida will probably be the first state in the Old South to crack.

re: #49 Flying Squirrel Girl

When I came home from my last semester of college, I found a trash bag over one of the windows of our back door (my mother lived in one half of a duplex at the time). Turns out she’d been robbed the night before, somebody had smashed in the window, unlocked the door, come in and taken her cheapo cubic zirconium jewelry. Nothing of any real value, thank god, despite there being thousands of dollars worth of accumulated electronics in the home.

They came back the next night, presumably to finish the job — except that I was there (Mom worked two jobs including an overnight shift at the time). I heard them trying to jimmy the lock with a paint spreader. As we keep no weapons of any kind in the house, I improvised by wielding the battery-powered weed whacker as a crude club. Didn’t need to use it though — one solid pound on the inside of the door sent the guy(s) running, leaving the paint spreader stuck in the door jamb.

Turns out that you don’t need guns to defend your home. the vast majority of break-and-enter types are colossal cowards that flee at the first sign of resistance.

I have something similar to one of these monsters as the deadbolt on the door. The bolts are three inches long and they go into not only the steel doorjamb, but into the concrete around the doorjamb as well. Image: M1061_3_Pins_Security_Deadbolt_Lock.jpg_250x250.jpg It’s Russian-made; it’s got Cyrillic writing on it.

It’s not just the amateurs. Getting into a fight with someone means hospitals, witnesses, and potential death. You don’t need a gun for a burglar, you just need to convince them your house isn’t a good target tonight. Locks and dogs and alarms, oh my.

On the other hand you need some sort of defense for the intruders for whom the primary target is you. What’s really sad here is that it’s yet another place where we focus on the flash and ignore the bang.

Most gun deaths are from pistols, but we focus on rifles. (“assault” rifles at that.)
Most gun deaths are suicides, followed by single homicides. We focus on the mass shootings.
Most non-robbery rapes and murders come from known acquaintances. We focus on the strangers.

I miss Sarah Palin. I was bummed when she decided not to run for president the last time around. It would have been hard to find a challenger to Barack Obama less funny than Mitt Romney (notwithstanding Barrett Foa’s outstanding “I Believe” Romney-musical spoof), and because the president himself isn’t exactly a barrel of laughs, we ended up with one of the unfunniest (and also angriest) White House races in history.

That opportunity is lost, but it’s still fun when Palin injects herself into the news.

Eager media-watchers who have been waiting for more details about the new media venture that Glenn Greenwald and eBay founder Pierre Omidyar are launching finally got some information on Thursday, when Omidyar announced that the organization will be called First Look Media, and that he is putting an initial investment of $50 million into it.

Omidyar also said that the company will have two separate branches—one a for-profit technology wing, and the other a non-profit news and information site, which is presumably where Greenwald and his colleagues will be centered.

Glenn Greenwald explains to Al Jazeera that there’s no such thing as terrorism, and the evil US is just using it as a pretext so they can spy on everyone in the world.

I wish I were exaggerating.

Terrorism, which doesn’t exist anywhere in the Middle East either, as it relates to how Sunnis attack Shia with car bombs on a near daily basis, and Shia retaliate in kind.

He’s got such an infantile and naive view of the world that it’s dangerous.

guess Glenn was at the movies on 9/11/2001, strange how his hubris and need for attention has superseded any kind of self editing before speaking in public.

I just can’t anymore with her.

I never could with her. The moment that McCain selected her I was done.

The Republicans thought they could cynically attract disgruntled Hillary voters by nominating anyone with two X chromosomes as their VP. They think of women as some sort of mindless hive vagina that will fall in lockstep, and that a cheap ploy would win them the White House.

They never stopped to consider her qualifications when stacked up against Hillary. If women are going to vote for the first woman VP to be a heartbeat away from the Oval Office, it’s damn sure going to be someone smarter than Sarah Palin.

Keeping everything under one-roof for easier oversight. The technology wing will spy on Greenwald and friends so that they feel comfortable and that everything is right with the world.

China/Russia aren’t doing anything wrong and even if they are:
1) Their wrongs pale in significance to those of the U.S. or
2) They’re only doing wrong in response to wrongs being done by U.S.

See, that’s how that works.

To be fair, they think this of minorities too. African-Americans are too dumb to realize that they’re “on the plantation” by voting Dem, and of course they should vote for an utter loon like Allen West/Alan Keyes/Ben Carson/EW Jackson because of his skin color.

There was more to it than that: the Fundamentalist Christian wing of the GOP had threatened to run their own candidate because they were dissatisfied with McCain’s “liberal” stance on social policies.

She was put there to keep them supporting the GOP, and to simply serve as a blank canvas onto which voters could project their image of the ideal conservative candidate.

From what I’m told, Dr. Carson had some respect in the black community because of his pioneering. That would make it sensible for Republicans to take advantage of that.

But I don’t think Dr. Carson has that respect any more…
