Great Moments in Republican Rebranding: The Horrific Revenge Fantasies of Erick Erickson

Comforted by thoughts of eternal torment
Wingnuts • Views: 25,686
The GOP’s idea man, Erick Erickson

Twitter’s 140-character limit can be frustrating, but sometimes it can reveal a person’s real essence in starkly obvious terms. One of those moments happened last night, when RedState kingpin and former CNN contributor Erick Erickson tweeted the following, in a series of rants defending the Duck Dynasty guy’s ugly homophobic/racist comments:

It’s the mark of a true fanatic that he’d even think of expressing a horrible vision like this … and worse, attributing it to God. He’s “comforted” by a fantasy that the people he hates will be tortured for all eternity in Hell, and utterly convinced it’s actually going to happen.

That “comforts” him.

So Erick enjoys the idea of his imaginary friend punishing the people who make him look like a whiny bitch in real life.

Seems to be falling into the “Judge not lest ye be judged yourself” trap. And note how often literature includes idiots being asked to judge a situation and then finding out that they have sentenced themselves.

If you’re going to be all hardcore about the Bible and what Jesus said, then you should focus on divorce and remarriage being adultery, because the Man was unequivocal on that point.

He sounds kind of like a girl I knew in college. She had a true gift for languages, could learn them in nothing flat. She always said that she wanted to be on an airline flight that crashed, so she could go around to everybody and comfort them while they were dying in their own language. Apologies for going OT so early in the thread, but I have a question for The Juice: I have to cut one Jewish holiday from a calendar to make room on the back side of the layout for a new item. Which would be the best (least important) one to cut?

Passover (1st day)
Rosh Hashanah
Yom Kippur
Hanukkah (1st day)

TIA

Actually, eternal torment in Hell isn’t a common feature of all religion. Even within Christianity, the emphasis on hellfire and damnation varies widely.

Edited to add: So, someone who goes on about how much he enjoys the thought of others being eternally tortured in Hell reveals more about his individual psychopathic tendencies than he does about anything else.

The Christians have a ready made explanation for that, Jesus ended Old Testament Mosaic Law *. That’s why divorce and remarriage are a good place to focus, because you’re hitting them with His own explicit and unyielding position.

* I’ve never gotten a good explanation for why the ending of Mosaic Law applies to the dietary, mixed crop and fiber laws but not gay sex. There’s a very self serving and nebulously supported selectivity going on there.

I’ve tended to be a believer, at least in recent years, to the idea that if there as eternal soul, then “Heaven” and “Hell” are not so much places as states of mind. That the difference between the two has more to do with an inability to let go of the physical world than any “sins” one has committed in life.

Not really surprises me all that much. Virtually every “reality” show I’ve seen on TV has been revealed, at one time or another, to be 90% scripted and perhaps 10% improvisation. Entire shows, like some of the ones shown on “TruTV,” are “reenactments” that are supposed to be staged versions of actual events.

To be honest, my belief that Hell is eternal is something I take on faith. It is not backed by logic nor does it answer to reason.

Yeah. By its definition, Faith is not amenable to logical discussion.

re: #76 goddamnedfrank

LOL, why? Why eternal? That means infinitely forever.

That’s kind of, by design and definition, disproportional to any conceivable crime.

Axiomatic to that is the idea that the only possible motivation for the punishment is spite. Rehabilitation and more importantly love, by any possible definition of the word goes right out the window.

I am grimly amused when I see Christian apologists try to justify eternal torment in Hell as consistent with a religion supposedly based on love.

Then again, I’m also amused by those who attempt to square the circle, trisect an angle, or double the cube with compass and straightedge.

I always wondered how the ZZ wannbes got those blonde trophy wives. Even with money . . .

I’d bet dollars to donuts that many, if not most, of right-wing Christians share this view with Erickson. I’m sure much of the appeal of religion to these people is the idea of God punishing the gays/atheists/single mothers.

I’m also sure that their problem with Pope Francis goes beyond Frankie repudiating the Gospel of Ayn Rand. They’re probably also pissed that he wants an open, welcoming church.

That’s because you aren’t a hater. You may despise someone, but that is always because of what you consider their misdeeds and you are willing to cease feeeling that way if they reform. When your party is losing its national appeal, one has a tendency to grasp for straws.

The short and long term for the gop don’t look good. They’ve alienated groups that are growing in population, while pandering to groups that are shrinking. But, in Erickson’s feeble fundamentalist mind, it’s all OK because they’re gonna win in the long long long term, when God punishes all us fornicators, liberals, gay supporters, pot smokers and—most of all—Obama voters.

He’s a sick fuck who perfectly represents the freeper southern element that is dying off far too slowly.

Nah, WE ADJUST to daylight savings time so their stomach’s don’t have to.

If feeding time was normally 5pm while on DST, and you still had a “DST” clock around (not bumped back an hour in the fall), it would be indicating 6pm when your normal (non-DST) clocks indicate 5pm. I’m suggesting that possibly your adjustment is in the wrong direction.

No, hubby keeps track of all that stuff. 5pm now, 6pm when the clock changes. It doesn’t not matter, either way, they start at 4:30. Sometimes they whine until they are fed at 5, other times they whine until they are fed at 6.

Usually, they do wear us down and by the end of the season it’s more like 5:30.

Phil Robertson has been suspended from Duck Dynasty! And with that decisive victory against intolerance and bigotry, the delicate moral balance of reality TV is restored … thus preserving the high standards of character and social behavior we’ve come to expect in quality programming like Toddlers & Tiaras, Bad Girls Club, Real Housewives, My Super Sweet 16, and whatever the fuck Snooki is doing. And it assumes all of the middle and lower class people would side with the revolt, which is far from a sure thing.

Honestly, that sort of sentiment is of a kind (though to a lesser degree) with wingnut fantasies of a “Second American Revolution”. Revolution is not a thing to hunger for; Revolutions >kill. And with modern weaponry, any fighting is going to be far more deadly than in the 1770’s.

And this has to be said:

Even if you had the middle and lower class people with you, the military firepower is overwhelming against the middle and lower class, at worst it would be stomped out like a bug pretty much immediately, or be one of those long, dragged out insurgency affairs like Iraq or Afghanistan.

The only way such a revolution would be winnable for practical purposes would be if the powers that be are so way outta line that the military chooses against the powers that be. And that would take a lot.

That is what is so sickening about seeing the wingnuts becoming bolder and bolder in their secessionist and revolutionary treasonous rhethoric. They will most likely not stand a chance once they cross the line where the government will put its foot down swiftly and harshly, making their doomsday prophecies about Christians wingnuts being persecuted prosecuted practically self-fulfilling.

I don’t know if they are so utterly disconnected with reality that it is what they really believe, or if it is some top-level-wingnut plan to destabilize not only the United States but other places in the Northern hemisphere as well. Because like it or not, their boldness is spreading. Like what happened last Sunday here in Sweden:

Youtube Video

Just so you get the picture, those bangs you hear is not police teargas, it is explosives brought by the SMR (Swedish Resistance Movement, basically Nazis). Several police officers were injured in the SMR attack on the peaceful demonstration. And there is another demonstration, this time in several parts of the country, due for this weekend. So any positive thoughts and/or prayers to appropriate deities would be appreciated.

And yes, I have seen wingnuts in the US come to the defence of the SMR, claiming how their concerns and freedom of speech is being stomped upon (sic(!)).

I did a pen a while back from Ebony, with Rhodium plated hardware. It was really tough to photograph it and bring up any detail in the wood and not have the hardware just get blown out.

I can imagine that a black watch would be hard, plus the problem of the crystal over the dial, so you have to be careful of not getting a direct reflection of lights. I’ve got some of my pen pics where I can count the ribs on my umbrella. Really need to get a small soft box

Though it is frequently described[1] as a prostitutes’ rights group, COYOTE’s mission includes advocating for all varieties of sex workers of all genders, including strippers, phone sex operators and adult film performers. COYOTE provides counseling and legal referrals for sex workers, and assistance in leaving sex work for different careers.

Another month, another fatal LAPD fuck-up:

LAPD fatally shoots unarmed driver after high-speed chase (VIDEO)

LAPD officers fatally shot an unarmed suspect after a lengthy high-speed pursuit that ended in a violent crash in downtown Los Angeles Friday night.

After leading police on a chase for nearly an hour, 51-year-old Brian Newt Beaird smashed his Corvette into another vehicle in the middle of an intersection. Beaird abandoned his badly damaged car and fled on foot. Moments later, he police shot him, L.A. Times reports.

An investigation is underway to determine if any less-than-lethal munitions were deployed before officers resorted to gunfire. Some believe the sound of a bean bag round from a shotgun may have triggered sympathetic fire - or reflexive shooting — from other officers. But Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck said Monday that it was too early “to draw those kind of conclusions.”

Chief Beck also said this next part:

“Before an officer discharges the bean bag, the protocol is to loudly state, “Bean bag ready, bean bag ready,’ so everyone knows the detonation heard is not a gunshot.”

“These are tough instances,” he continued. “It is difficult to do them perfectly in the haste of the moment.”

The LAPD seems stuck on Lethally Stupid.

Outrunning the cops doesn’t turn out well for anyone.

LAPD officers fired 22 shots at unarmed driver after Corvette chase, review says

investigations.nbcnews.com

“After hearing the preliminary briefing, I am very concerned about the circumstances that led up to and resulted in this Officer Involved Shooting,” said LAPD Chief Charlie Beck. “Because of those concerns I have directed that the three involved officers be assigned home pending the final results of the investigation. Determinations regarding training or possible disciplining of the involved officers will be made at that time.”

“The crash and the shooting were captured by local TV helicopters that had been following the Corvette during an hour-long chase through crowded city streets. Police opened fire at Brian Newt Beaird, 51, after he slammed his silver sports car into a Nissan at a downtown L.A. intersection, drove the vehicle onto the curb and hit a tree, and then got out and tried to walk away from the vehicle. Beaird was pronounced dead at a local hospital from multiple gunshot wounds. “No weapon was recovered” at the accident scene, said Chief Beck.

“The LAPD did not immediately say how many shots hit Beaird, or offer an explanation for why deadly force was employed. Chief Beck made his decision to send the officers home, with pay, after the results of an initial review known as a “72-hour briefing.” Criminal and administrative investigations are continuing and could take months to complete.”

Is that how you get the situations where somebody is shot by a large group of cops, something like 45 times. After the first shot, adrenaline, reflex, self preservation kicks in? I could easily see how that could be the case.

Yes, that’s part of how it happened when Amadou Diallo was killed. It is sometimes called ‘Contagious Shooting’.

The way I’ve done it is to take two polarizing gels, stack them against each other so I can get align them to block all the light, then put them on the strobes that way.

It usually works pretty well for eliminating reflections if you can get the strobes 45 degrees to each side of your subject.

One of the excuses I keep hearing from wingnuts for Robertson’s comments is “He’s a Christian, he’s just expressing what his beliefs tell him.” Okay, so explain this to me, why were none of you around to defense All-American Muslim? Where were you believers in religious freedom when TLC was getting hammered for daring to show Muslim Americans who didn’t fit the “jihadist in waiting” stereotype?

re: #351 Dark_Falcon

Yes, that’s part of how it happened when Amadou Diallo was killed. It is sometimes called ‘Contagious Shooting’.

“Contagious Shooting” - that sounds better than “Sympathetic shooting.”

I can understand how it happens - if you’re a cop who’s drawn his gun, you probably have good reason to feel threatened, you’re on a hairtrigger, as it were, to protect your own life, and the LAST THING you want to hear is a gunshot, which might be literally the last thing you DO hear.

I can also understand emptying the magazine, especially given how hard it is to hit a target with a handgun when you have all the time in the world and it’s not shooting back. You fire once and he’s still standing, so you fire again and he’s still standing, so the next thing you know you’ve pulled the trigger till it’s just clicking.

Not that I’ve ever been in anything remotely like that, but it’s not hard to imagine.

A little music interlude that sort of fits some of tonight’s comments in odd ways. One of my favorite bands that has always had a nice mellow pacing to their tunes…Dandy Warhols…Godless

Youtube Video

Hey, I said you were Godless then
It seems like you’re a soulless friend.
As thoughtless as you were back then,
I swear that you are Godless.

Hey, I guess you’re lonely, when
I gave, you only took, So then
It’s stranger then its ever been.
I guess it’s what you wanted.

Of late, it seems that
lonely I will be.
I beg, I bleed,
but this is all that I’ve gotten.

Hey, as for today, my friend,
To hope that you could ever bend,
I swear you are, I swear you are,
I swear that you are Godless.

Hey, I said you’re Godless then.
Hey, and you’re a soulless friend,
Hey, I said you’re Godless and
I swear, I swear

You’re Godless
You’re Godless
You’re Godless

Not a problem. I am getting very consistent and repeatable results with the setup I’m using now (single strobe W/ shoot through, white curved base / backdrop for an infinite background and a white reflector on the opposite side to balance things out.) Takes me all of 3 minutes to get everything set up, one quick flash to meter (but it’s always going to be the same if I’m set right, more just to confirm). That way I can put stuff up on the website and have a very consistent look and feel to the images.

The Robertson family’s released an official statement:

Robertson Family Releases Statement on A&E Decision to Suspend Phil Robertson

“We want to thank all of you for your prayers and support. The family has spent much time in prayer since learning of A&E’s decision. We want you to know that first and foremost we are a family rooted in our faith in God and our belief that the Bible is His word. While some of Phil’s unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible. Phil is a Godly man who follows what the Bible says are the greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Phil would never incite or encourage hate. We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty. Again, thank you for your continued support of our family.

The emphasis is mine, and honestly, that pretty much reads like a threat. As in “Phil will come back or the show is canceled.”

Cough, cough.

Trim the edges off in editing, sell as “wholesome” entertainment.

Reality TV is just using editing (and “reenactment”) to craft a narrative the audience wants.

Duck Dynasy was explicitly constructed to market the Robertsons as down-home rural folk, when they’re savvy businessmen. Savvy businessmen that have conservative beliefs that aren’t homespun wisdom or country charm, but are the standard wingnut, Christian-right crap.

What I find interesting is the specific edges that need to be trimmed. I think it says a lot about the self-perception of the audience.

My favorite realization during all this crap?

The same assholes holding up Phil Robertson as being some first amendment hero were demanding the public execution of the Dixie Chicks for saying they were embarrassed to be from the same state as Bush Jr.

A bit hyperbolic about what RWNJs wanted to do to the Chicks, but not by much; their careers, as a group or solo, never really recovered from the hits they took after Natalie Maines’ comments.

However, when RWNJs like Robertson have a flaming case of stuck-foot-in-mouth-itis, it’s funny how other RWNJs conveniently get quiet and forget about all of that all of a sudden, instead going to deflect and defend mode and circling the wagons.

I wonder how many of these supposedly literalistic Evangelicals know that “Hell” is a Greek concept that was forced into the Jewish sects’ various beliefs about death, as the various strands of 1st and 2nd century religions coalesced into what we later knew as “Christianity”?

The conflation with the Jewish ideas of the river Jordan with the Greek ideas of the River Styx is a rather clear example of how syncretic “Christianity” was/is.

I’ve been watching the George Pal classic Destination Moon. Made in 1950, this was probably the best movie of his sci-fi trilogy but was the least successful commercially.

It is famous for featuring a purpose-made Woody Woodpecker cartoon as an integral part of the plot. Pal and Woody’s creator, Walter Lantz, were old friends and Lantz agreed to make the cartoon. It features Woody learning about spaceflight from narrator Grace Stafford. It is actually a very good elementary presentation of the principles involved. In the movie the cartoon is shown to a group of fatcats as part of an effort to secure their backing for a proposed flight to the Moon.

Open a packet of sugar or salt from the breakroom and let it fall on an open desktop. Then you point out the vastness of the desktop and the grains of sugar.

Then, gently coax out one grain.

The desktop is the corporation,
the grains are the employees
and the one grain is YOU.

Gives the snot-nosed new hires some perspective.

I think it could be applied to some other situations.

But the Pacific is a long horrible thing when you’re in the middle seats in the center rows of Steerage Economy class with a 4 month old baby you just adopted… I don’t remember what movies were on that flight as there were just too many other miseries.

Our family still speaks fondly of ‘Andrew’, the 4-yr old we got to know too well on that flight.

Was with you until I saw he wrote the novel behind the putrid Kevin Costner flick.

Given everything that goes into making a move, you really can’t blame a novelist when one of his novels gives rise to a stinker. I’m an enormous fan of Lawrence Block’s Matt Scudder series of crime novels, but Eight Million Ways to Die was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. I stopped watching after about 15 minutes.

“spill treasure”?

Reaction 1: Way to cheapen the concept of self-sacrifice by raising up throwing money as an equivalent.

Reaction 2: The people that died for our freedoms didn’t selectively die for Phil Robertson ability to be a bigot, but not for the freedom of everyone else to articulate their disagreement.

Reaction 3: sounds like an artful euphemism for something very very kinky.

“‘All this for me? And I wasn’t even very good!’

All this for me—and I wasn’t even that good. Translate that into Latin and it could be on the Palin family’s coat of arms.

Fuck you, Sarah.

Dan Savage reviews Sarah’s book while baking cookies.

I have to say that, here on page 2, Palin is coming across as very nearly warm-blooded.

That didn’t last.

Page 5: Here I learn something I didn’t know and, if I were Sarah Palin, something I wouldn’t want anyone to know. But Sarah hustles this fact to the front of the book because she sure as hell wants us to know it: Sarah surprised Todd with a “nice, needed, powerful gun” for Christmas in 2012. It was a “small act of civil disobedience,” Palin writes, prompted by “the anti-gun chatter coming from Washington.”

What was inspiring that anti-gun chatter in Washington in December of 2012?
Oh, right: Twenty children and six teachers were shot dead in their classrooms by a deranged asshole with a “powerful gun.” And before the grieving mothers and fathers of Newtown, Connecticut, could put their dead children in the ground, Sarah Palin ran out gun shopping.

Emphasis mine.

re: #554 darthstar

Secularists have a vision for Christmas—and Sarah doesn’t care for it, not one bit.

“The other vision is a secular winter festival, which launches on Black Friday and ends sometime after Kwanzaa. People who hold Christmas in contempt believe the holiday can be ‘saved’ from its religious heritage. The secular vision wants the ‘peace’ and the ‘goodwill toward men’ without the miracle of the Virgin Birth—forgetting, of course, that there is no ultimate peace apart from Christ, and it is Christ who empowers every act of ‘goodwill toward men’ in our otherwise fallen hearts.”

You read it here first: No Jew—or Muslim or Hindu or Buddhist or atheist—ever performed a kind, loving, or selfless act. Or if a Jew ever did such a thing, that Jew was “empowered” to do so by Christ. Unwittingly inspired. And no human being ever performed a kind, loving, or selfless act before Christ was born.

I just threw Sarah Palin’s book across the room—no, scratch that. I just threw it clear across the house. If our front door had been open, her book would’ve sailed across the street and onto our Jewish neighbor’s porch across the street.

I don’t know where to start, that scientists now think that Jesus (assuming he existed) would have born in the summer, or that the “religious heritage” of Christmas is of yet another pagan tradition that the early Church wrapped in the trappings of Christianity to sell to the “heathens.”

Not summer so much as late spring - lambing was done after all. But Saturnalia needed to be tamed!

Meh, the incarnation is still worth celebrating even if us idiot humans screwed up when. Got some good stuff from the German pagans though, almost as good as the stuff we riffed from the Celts and Samhain ;) Decorated Trees & Jack’o’Lanterns, I tell you… :D

Hell, most of what we today associate with Christmas, from the big family gatherings, to the extravagant meals, to even the phrase “Merry Christmas,” have more to do with the publishing of A Christmas Carol than any “religious heritage.”

Ok, a cute thing for any gun nuts willing to admit it here. From the Urban Dictionary we have a riff on the Mosin Nagant:

The Mosin-nagant is an old school bolt action rifle from Russia. Originally designed by a drunk Russian engineer and an even more drunk Belgian gunsmith, who drew up blueprints on napkins in the back of a pub somewhere in Siberia in a vodka-induced stupor. The Mosin-nagant fires the 7.62x54r cartridge, which can kill a polar bear at a thousand yards and keep going right through the tree he was standing in front of. The Mosin-nagant was used by the Russians in both world wars, so it’s killed more Germans than collisions on the autobahn and under-cooked sauerkraut combined. Surplus Mosins can be found at gunshops in the States for like a hundred bucks on sale, and ammo is cheap surplus, so this is what real men shoot who don’t want to drop $1299.99 on an AR-15 which fires a .22 round and that’s made out of recycled milk jugs and Legos. Many of them come with a bayonet that’s roughly the size of the sword William Wallace used in Braveheart. In the absence of gun oil, you can clean a Mosin by pissing down the barrel and wiping the bolt off with a dirty rag that you found on the floor in a Grease Monkey. Try that with a rifle that was designed less than 50 years ago.
Joe: ” I need a rifle that is ten feet long and fires anti-tank rounds, but Ive only got 200 dollars!”, Ivan: “Amerikan comrade, you need mosin-nagant . Spend 100 on the rifle, fifty on case of ammo, use rest for vodka!”

I have a near mint ex-dragoon 1929 Izzy M91/30. If you understand that you’re doomed too.

568 Targetpractice  Thu, Dec 19, 2013 8:25:45pm

Really, I’ve never understood this thought process that goes “If this stuff was around when my parents were kids, then obviously it’s been around forever.” I mean seriously, most of what we today associate with Christmas has only been around for the last 200 years or so.
