The “Porch Shooter” will stand trial for 2nd Degree Murder.

npr.org

A case that put race relations in the spotlight once again — the shooting death of a 19-year-old African-American girl from Detroit on the porch of a white man’s home in suburban Dearborn Heights — will be going to court.

The Detroit News writes that:

“Theodore Wafer, the 54-year-old homeowner, charged with fatally shooting 19-year-old Detroit teen Renisha McBride last month as she stood on his front porch, has been bound over for trial in the case.”
As we wrote last month, “the case has raised racial tensions in Detroit, where a nearly two-week delay in charging Wafer had brought protests. It has also echoed some of the elements of the Trayvon Martin case, in which an unarmed black teenager was shot and killed by a white man in Florida.”

Hearing some wingnuts say the Robertsons should just call it quits and take the show to another network. Except I doubt they could do that, or at least not under the “Duck Dynasty” trademark. 18 Targetpractice  Thu, Dec 19, 2013 9:30:12pm

Speaking of wingnut brain farts, the other one that keeps getting repeated is how “Gays don’t watch Duck Dynasty!!!” One, there’s no data to support that contention, as I doubt even A&E’s been desperate enough to run the numbers. But even if they have, it still ignores the reality of the situation: Duck Dynasty is not the only show on A&E. And any lost viewership is lost ad revenue, which means A&E was left with either suspending Phil and attracting wingnut ire or let him spew whatever he liked and piss off everybody who’s not a BIble-thumping moron.

And Mr. Wafer is not going to walk on the charge, either. The fact that he shot a young woman who was no threat to him through a locked screen door is going to be too much for a Michigan jury to ignore. I predict he goes down for Manslaughter at the very least.

Homophobia is such a terrible thing. I have little doubt that if guys like this thought they could get away with such legislation here, they’d do it. It all leaves me with disgust at these fundamentalist pricks who care more about punishing people because of who they’re attracted to more so than actually helping people. Well see, here is the difference between Teh Juice and Christians like Bryan. We have the Hebrew Scriptures but we also have an oral tradition of how to interpret the scriptures, kind of a “User’s Manual.”

There is a healthy ancient tradition of questioning, analyzing and re-interpreting according to the needs of each generation.

He wouldn’t go for the “questioning” part. He just wants total obedience based upon *his* sole interpretation of the document(s). That’s his source of authority and he appears to be focused on the authority and not the philosophy. And that appears to be the problem with a lot of these religious nuts - it’s a path to getting and keeping authority, not a position for teaching and living the philosophy behind the religion.

I think that much nuance is too much for a tool like Fischer. Anyhow, I’m glad Fischer’s a big minority in the US when it comes to his religion but at the same time, it scares me that American evangelicals are using their weight in places like Uganda to force their bigotry over there too.

“MST3K” and “Beavis and Butt-Head” were incredibly influential in developing this 1990s teenage nerd’s taste in film and music. I learned so much about what doesn’t make a good film from MST3K. And my inner rock snob developed from discovering a whole slew of seminal bands that weren’t on the radio, but were appearing in videos on B&B: Sonic Youth, the Clash, Built to Spill, Pavement, etc.

It also helped that both shows left me in tears of laughter much of the time.

I think this business with Uganda is why I didn’t like the Kony 2012 stuff. Certainly Kony is an awful man and the documentary was right on about that but the documentary also painted the Ugandan government as some force of good. Like Femnazi, I am totally disgusted that anyone from our country helped on this legislation. It seems that this is what our fundie zealots do now that they know they’re losing at home. It really though does leave you grateful that people in the past for gay rights here but at the same time reminds you on how far the world as a whole needs to come on this and many issues.

Actually, depending on which of the TWO creation stories in Genesis, one has a time line something like this. (the one in Genesis 2:4-25)

1. God Makes Adam.
2. God decides it’s not good for Adam to be alone
3. God creates all the other animals and brings them to Adam to name them. (because you really want somebody who has no experience creating your taxonomy for you.)
4. God then creates Eve (he uses Adams rib in this story, in the version in Genesis 1, they are created at the same time and before the animals)

So, the infinitely powerful and all knowing God creates man, then creates all the animals, and THEN decides that a woman might be a good idea?

The smartest person in the supermarket I frequent, and who knows this fact personally, is the checkout clerk who gets SNAP him or herself. And lots of them do around here, even as they work at minimum wage. It’s not part of the “lake effect economy” as I like to call it.

Those clerks never complain about SNAP, WIC, or any of it. You’re just another customer.

However, go down the road about 10 mi to the next one of this chain, and they seldom get SNAP customers. They’re lake dwellers from Charlotte or who work there, for the most part, and I never understood how that store can stay open because they don’t do nearly the volume of the first one near me—plus, they compete w/WalMart and another store that is not too far away (when you look at the cars and SUVs in the WM parking lot, you know these aren’t all poor people shopping there).

Incidentally, the turnover of food in the first one is high as well, so it tends to be fresher.

And this is sort of key to my referring to myself as a “hopeful atheist”* since if we are our own monsters than there is some hope of us eventually learning to tame and deal with it. If there is some sort of omnipotent force paying attention to what is going on and just allowing it to happen than I am essentially nothing better than a lab rat.

re: #146 RealityBasedSteve

Just a nice set of factoids to have in the hip pocket for my “Bible is Literal” associates.

RBS

I think the first male who connected birth and where he came from, a woman’s vagina, invented the story of “Adam and Eve”.

From my feminist perspective, men have creation envy and have since that discovery—thus, male-centered religion was born, and since males can use brawn and force, being bigger and stronger than women, they could enforce it, not just over women, but over entire populations. It’s no surprise to me that “entertainment” like cage fighting, the promotion of war, including in gaming, etc. is so popular these days.

The more we develop our brains, the more we know, the more we progress. After all, you can live without brawn—but you can’t live without brain. If Sisyphus had a brain, we wouldn’t have that myth, Camus notwithstanding.

We have it all wrong, of course. Men should strive to be more like women, not the opposite, which is pushed on us.

I liked a story that Nucky Thompson in Boardwalk Empire played by Steve Buscemi had. Guy is drowning at sea. HE’s thrown a life preserver He declines it saying God will save him and eventually drowns. He gets to Heaven and asks God why didn’t he save him? God responds “I threw you a life preserver, had those people want to save you, what more did you want.” That’s what I always think about people who see prayer as the only solution.

The black people who Phil Robertson knew were warred upon. If they valued their lives, and the lives of their families, the last thing they would have done was voiced a complaint about “white people” to a man like Robertson. Ignorance is no great sin and one can forgive the good natured white person for not knowing how all that cannibal sausage was truly made. But having been presented with a set of facts, Robertson’s response is to cite “welfare” and “entitlement” as the true culprits.

The belief that black people were at their best when they were being hunted down like dogs for the sin of insisting on citizenship is a persistent strain of thought in this country. What it ultimately reflects is inability to cope with America that is at least rhetorically committed to equality. One can quickly see the line from this kind of thinking, to a rejection of the civil rights movement of our age:

Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right

This is not just ignorance, it is a willful retreat into myth. And we must have the intellectual courage and moral strength to follow the myth through. If swindlers, goat-fuckers and gay men are really all the same—disinherited from the kingdom of God—why not treat them the same? How does one argue that a man who is disfavored by the Discerner of All Things, should not be shamed, should not jeered, should not be stoned, should not be lynched in the street?

Further retreat into the inanity of loving the sinner, but hating the sin—a standard which would clean The Wise Helmsman, himself—will not do. Actual history shows that humans are not so discriminating. Black people were once thought to be sinners. We were rewarded with a species of love that bore an odd resemblance to hate. One need not be oversensitive to be concerned about Phil Robertson’s thoughts on gay sex. One simply need be a student of American history.

In the perennial tradition of blaming everything bad that happens on gay people, we learned in 2013 that gay rights caused everything from tornadoes to forest fires and floods… including Noah’s Flood. After Minnesota legalized same-sex marriage, one radio talk show host even confidently predicted that the state would face economic and weather-related punishment.

Self-proclaimed prophet Cindy Jacobs, who linked the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell to freak bird deaths, feared that the Supreme Court marriage rulings would lead to divine wrath in the form of natural disasters:

But the majority do look to the “man box” because it’s the predominant culture. If that weren’t the case, women’s sports would get as much attention, for instance, as male sports. Women would manage businesses differently, not simply like the male-dominated business schools taught them. The same in law, medicine, or any other profession. But women do not dominant in any of those, and haven’t even achieved much parity.

Being a woman is not just about “keeping the peace” but being a whole person, and we are thwarted every single day of our lives in trying to do so.

Experiences may vary.

Seriously, this motherfucker needs to get it through his tiny little brain that President Obama is not going to sign a repeal of a legislation that he lost the House and almost the Senate over. In keeping with the war on Christians (////), in other news, the Supreme Court of Canada today struck down a series of laws that made it impossible for prostitutes to ply their trade. In short, prostitution itself is not really illegal in Canada, however, keeping a brothel, living on the avails of prostitution, and communicating in public for purposes of prostitution is.

Basically the Supreme Court stated that such laws made it difficult for prostitutes to work in their chosen field, forced them underground, and put them in danger from STDs and at the hands of those who wish to hurt them. It also robs the government of tax revenues (though they did not cite that reason in the decision). It is worth noting that the action was brought by current and former sex trade workers seeking a safer workplace for themselves and their colleagues.

It’s the same thing as with wingnuts: Purity Uber Alles. Whereas for all his rhetoric, Barack Obama has in his career almost entirely stayed within the limits of what is politically possible. Also worthy of note is that the emoprog’s dismay at Obama’s adoption of Bush Administration security programs is in part driven by projection: Many such people projected their own beliefs onto Obama in 2008, in some ways encouraged by his campaign*. Thus they take it as betrayal what Obama reveals himself as not sharing the same animus against George W. Bush that they feel.

*: Presidential campaigns normally encourage this to a degree, and I do not fault Obama’s campaign for it.

Fortunately, only one of the two parties is almost completely controlled by the whacko true believers.

Actually, I feel that Republicans passing the budget deal and Obama appointing a number left-liberal people heralds a small balance shift. It’s my contention that in 2014 the wingnuts will wield moderately less power than they’ve had recently, while the moonbats will have some attention paid to them. They still won’t hold the reigns, but Obama is likely to at least gesture in their direction.

That sounds like something that would backfire massively on him if it happened. I believe that a vast majority of Christians don’t really care about the subject and have a very “live and let live, it’s none of my business” viewpoint on the matter.

My oldest son SHAVED HIS BEARD OFF in order to look different.

I thought Phil overdid it with the “we wuz real, real poor” bullshit, too. In the 1950’s there were a couple of recessions, which I remember. Many people back then knew what “poor” really meant. If his parents chose to live in the country and away from society, that was a choice, just as having 7 kids was.

Really poor kids didn’t get a chance to get a Master’s degree…or even go to a 4 yr school, at least not in the mid-’60s.

I think Phil just just used a momentary blip in his family finances as more fodder for the Robertson family mythology.

13 If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” 15 then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin. 16 Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. 17 Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, 18 and the elders shall take the man and punish him. 19 They shall fine him a hundred shekels[a] of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives.

With all of these businesses, Awra Amba has managed to pull itself out of poverty. Compared with the rest of the region, the average income here is more than twice as high. Literacy rates are higher than in neighboring villages. Mortality rates are lower.

“Everyone here dreams of becoming more prosperous — that’s a big reason why our economy has grown faster than others,” says Zumra Nuru, who founded the village 40 years ago as a kind of utopian community. He says at the time, he was dissatisfied by the injustice he perceived in traditional Ethiopian culture and wanted to organize a society along more egalitarian lines. He also saw the community as a way to increase wealth.

“We use all our time for work and to improve our village,” he says.

One reason the people of Awra Amba are able to work so hard is that they do not follow organized religion.

JCP is in even worse shape. But Sears is a mess.

Speaking of messes, it looks like Darden is trying to sell off Red Lobster, or alternatively, create 3 divisions to maximize shareholder profits - a real estate holdings division, Red Lobster/Olive Garden, and an upscale restaurants division that includes Bahama Breeze and Capital Grille.

The company doesn’t know how to turn things around, but maybe they ought to start with paying their workers better and with better benefits. That would improve the employee satisfaction, and lead to better restaurant performance. But that’s where they’ll most likely cut.

Opposition to SOPA/PIPA isn’t so much about protecting piracy, as it is about concerns regarding the vaguely-defined powers it includes to declare a site to be ‘rogue’ and legally require that ISPs block access to it, and the very large liability holes it opens in large-scale Web 2.0 style platforms such as Reddit and Wikipedia.

Piracy is a concern, but SOPA/PIPA were/are bad legislation that goes about addressing it the wrong way.

I can only imagine what Bryan Fischer might think….I smell a boycott of Canada coming.

So…it haz nothing to do with free speech or faith after all:

In May 2013, rumors began circulating via social media that the continuation of the show (on A&E, at least) was being threatened by “liberals and atheists” and meddling A&E officials who objected to the Robertsons’ inclusion of their religiosity (particularly in dinner prayer scenes) and the prevalent appearance of guns in the show. According to the Hollywood Reporter (THR), what’s currently holding up the renewal of Duck Dynasty for a fourth season on A&E is not a content dispute but a standoff with the Robertsons over their salary demands.

I think he’s getting his RWNJ boogeymen confused. That’s the enviro-nuts who bow down to birds, animals and reptiles, not the sodomites.

Though it does seem to shed light on why RWNJ Christians hate environmentalists so much. They think we worship Gaia, or something. I’ll admit to having far more of a spiritual experience standing on the rim of Crater Lake than I ever did in church, but I don’t actually worship the friggin’ lake.

Right wingers don’t seem to get that ti’s Free Speech not I get to say the ever hell I want and no one gets to question it. If I have a show and then I go on a rant about how Christians are backwards morons who use an outdated book to run their lives. There’s going to be repercussions. I could be fired, suspended, fined. The government can’t jail me for those remarks but my employer can do what he wants to do. What I don’t get is if Robertson was praying for someone as the moron Fischer claims, why he was going on a homophobic rant. When I used to pray, I typically didn’t include bitching about those I don’t like or find unworthy in to my prayers.

Some other network will probably pick them up, but who’s to say how much they’ll net at the end of the day.

What we do know is that the show benefits from Louisiana taxpayers - as a show filmed/produced in Louisiana, the show is probably getting significant tax credits/incentives to work there. And a portion is supporting this guy and his choices/actions.

There are always pluses in the negatives. Maybe this has been building and A&E is starting to see it is on its way down in the ratings and if they play this stuff up right, they can introduce some shows that really gets back into the arts. Shoot for a higher level and bring your programming up to that level. As many have said here, they no longer watch the History Channel, A&E, Discover and the like because it is all bubba all the time.

Who knows…a sea change might be the best thing that happens to the first network that goes in the other direction. Sometimes a bold, out of nowhere move is the best.

And what would be really funny…if they do get back into actual arts, they will be bringing a lot of people in the entertainment businesses to that programming. That would mean a lot of the LGBT community and their friends, family and others would be tuning in.

And then Bryan Fischer and Sarah can bitch about all that high-brow artsy-fartsy stuff that has “those people” tuning in and tearing this country apart!

And then the beards can be cut and people would learn to dress better!

Not particularly surprising. Bibi says many things in public, but is speaking a different tune in Hebrew and in private to his backers and to other officials in the Knesset. The NSA is wise to want to know what he’s really saying and doing, not just taking him at his (English) word.

It’s only slightly more surprising that aid groups are targeted along with business elites, but these groups and people have contacts in parts of the world that are hard to come by and can offer hard intel about what’s going on in some parts of the world.

And while some countries use their national spy agencies to further their own companies’ economic interests, it so far doesn’t appear to be that kind of relationship for the NSA and GCHQ.

You know how Glenn Beck is making a big deal out of how he is making a “rare CNN appearance” tonight? He and CNN are not mentioning the fact the he is being interviewed by one of his own employees!

re: #381 ObserverArt

Over the course of many of our lifetimes so much medical recommendations have been introduced, changed, been proven to be dangerous, recycled to come back again, become fashion, etc., etc.

It gets to the point you don’t know who to believe about any of it. It really is tragically sad and funny at the same time.

Sometimes I see conflicting information in the same article. I just laugh and think of the Logic/Philosophy class I took in College in which we mostly spent our time finding errors in published articles.

Several senators had been looking to get C-27J Spartans transferred to the Forest Service, including Feinstein, Wyden, McCain, and Udall, who requested the transfer earlier this year. However, it looks like C-130Js will be transferred instead.

Either way, the Forest Service gets badly needed aircraft and gear to fight an ongoing problem with large wildfires.

To be honest I think A&E are being a bit hypocritical themselves.

They build a successful franchise with a family of self professed redneck fundamental Christians, now they are shocked over their personal views?

I think they should have put out a statement disagreeing strongly with his views, but the suspension is looking like a ploy to get more viewers.
If they really wanted to make a strong stance they could have cancelled the show. Or at least put the entire show on hold for the new season.

Nobody is looking good in this thing.

Okay! Lets run with that. A commercial idea…

Around a table there sits a Sarah Palin look-a-like, A bearded Duck-Dynasty type, A Bryan Fischer type, A soldier, A Hippie, A dudebro liberal, a cliched gay character, A business man, an athlete, all of different races, etc.

All are arguing like all get out. Along comes a fresh VB pie and everyone shuts up. After the pie is consumed everyone stands and greets each other goodbye nicely and walks off satisfied.

Peace through Pie!

Yep.
“Oh you liberals want to stop people from saying Merry Christmas.”
“I really don’t care but I just don’t see why you’re getting worked up over a stranger who doesn’t know that you’re Christian wishing you a Happy Holidays. They’re trying to be polite.”
“WAR ON CHRISTMAS”
“Whatever dude, I need another beer.”

I know, then you have to remind them that they have mistaken you for someone who gives a fuck.

Shamelessly stealing from an internet joke I saw a while ago, let’s add a CEO to the mix.

He can eat 7/8 of the pie, and everybody else fights over the remaining slice.

Let me know if you have any graphics needs. Logos, signage, menus, photography, illustrations, (recipe) books, web sites…a one man advertising/graphics firm. Which is what I have always been for smallish companies.

I am going out on my own. Just finished up a new logo for myself, looking into some web portfolio setups on the cheap, producing a portfolio CD, etc. just to get going.

I’m launching myself onto the streets of Central Ohio the first of the year.

Of course, I understand there are other graphics people around too…like CuriousLurker I believe is in the field as are others. But brainstorming with a few might be good.

As a resident of Georgia who commutes, WSB happens to be the best traffic in town, so I end up pretty much forced to listen to them to navigate my way home in the evenings. Erick, Son Of Erick has a show in that evening commute slot, much to my chagrin, so I just sort of have to grin and bear it.

Have you thought about streaming internet radio programs, playing podcasts or recorded music (in areas of poor reception) via your handheld plugged into your car sound system?

Handhelds are more than just a cell phone.

Have I mentioned that I admire Morris Dees and the SPLC immensely? The weirdest part of Robertson’s statement though regarding Civil Rights was “No one was singing the blues then.” Uh Phil that was the golden age of the Blues. Robert Johnson, B.B King, Muddy Waters, etc all came of age in the pre-civil rights south.

Dees is an unusual guy. Made a lot of money publishing and marketing books before graduating from college. The SPLC does a lot of good things.

What really struck me re Dees, is that when he traveled from Montgomery, AL, to meet with us in Macon, GA, he would ride his BMW motorcycle.

At that time, one would expect someone hated as much as Dees to at least travel through AL & GA in a car for his own safety.
