Entire Right Wing Media Lines Up to Support Hate Speech by Duck Dynasty’s Head Caveman

It’s no surprise that more vile, bigoted statements by Duck Dynasty’s head cretin are now coming to light: Phil Robertson Homophobic Past Resurfaces in 2010 Sermon.

If you take a run around the right wing websites today, you’ll see that all of them are lining up to voice enthusiastic support for Robertson. And I do mean “all.”

Some of them are trying to pretend they’re standing up for “free speech” — but it couldn’t be more obvious that these lofty concerns about “freedom” are just a sham.

The right is circling the wagons around Robertson and his caveman comments because they agree with what he said. When Phil Robertson compared homosexuality to bestiality, and said African Americans in the Jim Crow era were happier and more “godly,” he was simply expressing very common right wing views.

Because let’s face it — we had GOP politicians running for president in the last election who said exactly the same kinds of disgusting things.

UPDATE at 12/20/13 11:02:16 am

What is this. I don’t even.

Duck Dynasty Star Is Rosa Parks of Our Generation.

Today, Ian Bayne called Phil Robertson, star of the A&E series “Duck Dynasty,” the ‘Rosa Parks’ of our generation.

“In December 1955, Rosa Parks took a stand against an unjust societal persecution of black people, and in December 2013, Robertson took a stand against persecution of Christians,” said Bayne.

Parks, famous for refusing to give up her seat on a bus for a white person, as was the rule of her day, provided inspiration for a movement of equality of black people and white people in America.

“What Parks did was courageous,” said Bayne. “What Mr. Robertson did was courageous too.”

Bayne believes that the Duck Dynasty star knew that going on GQ would result in the current controversy going on surrounding his suspension, as well as his suspension.

Bayne added that this exposure of Robertson’s situation is an eye opener for many who may have been previously in disbelief that the bible is fast becoming considered “hate speech” by the media and society.

Is it too early to assume that this whole thing was a contrived publicity stunt from the beginning?

Someone pointed out this already but it was rich that the same people complaining now that Robertson had his free speech violated are the same people who wanted the Dixie Chicks blacklisted from the entertainment industry for saying they were ashamed to share the same state as President Bush. I guess it’s okay in right wing world to compare a whole group of people to animal fuckers but don’t you dare not be proud to share the same state with a president you’re not fond of. Honestly, Robertson’s entitled to his opinion but A&E is also entitled to do what they want too. He’s not being punished by jail or fine by the government for his remarks. If Robertson had made disparaging remarks about Christians, he would have been suspended too and it would have been fair too. One thing I still don’t get is I hear he was supopsedly praying for someone when eh said this. Who the hell prays for someone while babbling about gays being like animal scerwers.

Dixie Chicks pulled from air after bashing Bush

From CNN: Friday, March 14, 2003. Country stations across the United States have pulled the Chicks from playlists following reports that lead singer Natalie Maines said in a concert in London earlier this week that she was “ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.”

Back in May, they tried floating the rumor that the family’s Christian faith was under attack.
Turns out it was salary negotiations because the duck people were demanding $200,000 an episode for the fourth season and regular raises for each subsequent season.
It is totally a manufactured crisis.

In media terms, the only worthwhile reaction is over reaction.

Dixie Chicks, Phil Robertson, Mel Gibson, Martin Bashir, Don Imus, Baldwin….

Real concerns multiplied by the ratings chase and then squared by the mood of the moment.

18 lawhawk  Fri, Dec 20, 2013 10:49:00am

The same right wingers who were demanding Martin Bashir’s head on a pike; the same ones who called for Alec Baldwin to lose his job(s); are now demanding that A&E restore Robertson to his gig on a reality tv show because that’s free speech, but it’s speech they agree with.

They couldn’t care about the speech they disagree with (or about people they disagree with).

So, while as I’ve repeatedly pointed out that this isn’t a First Amendment issue, but a contract matter between Robertson and the producers, these same right wingers ignore that the First Amendment is designed to protect speech, all speech, including the speech you disagree with.

If you’re going to claim that this is a free speech matter, your hypocrisy is showing when you demand Baldwin or Bashir lose their jobs over their speech, but demand that Robertson get his job back after being suspended.

Since this isn’t a free speech matter, the producers can take whatever actions they deem appropriate pursuant to the contract that Robertson willingly entered into so as to reap the profits of his scripted reality tv show that is quite the departure from his family’s lifestyle before the show began taping (back when they weren’t all sprouting copious amounts of facial hair and would be at home in the country club more readily than the bayous). Because Image Is Everything. And the Robertsons know that they’ve got a cash cow that they’ve got to reap for as long as possible.

Neither is Sarah Palin and she can be very vicious, too. How she manages to stick around is beyond me. It doesn’t bode well for the country.

In the meantime, I spotted an Elantra of undeterminate year sporting bike rack on the rear and ski racks on top. On the back window was a sticker, “Ron Paul for President”.

More video of Robertson displaying his homophobia and belief system. It’s been rolling around on YouTube for a few months now:

Youtube Video

It’s a nearly hour long video. This nugget is from about 17 minutes or so:

“Women with women. Men with men. They committed indecent acts with one another. And they received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. They’re full of murder, envy, strife, hatred. They are insolent, arrogant, god haters, they are heartless, they are faithless, they are senseless, they are ruthless, they invent ways of doing evil!

That’s what you have 235 years, roughly, after your forefathers founded the country. So what are you going to do, Pennsylvania? Just run with them? You’re going to die. Don’t forget that.”

30 HappyWarrior  Fri, Dec 20, 2013 11:00:01am

What I found as offensive about his statement about gays was his stupid comments about African Americans. It’s a typical right wing bs lie, the Great Society ruined the African-American family and caused them to dependent on government. And then he says some crap about how no one was singing the blues then? I guess he doesn’t realize that some of the best blues music was written before 1960.

They have contradictory positions on the Civil Rights Movement because they know the CRM was a noble cause so they want to liken their own causes to it. At the same time, they think LBJ was a big government meanie for telling states they couldn’t segregate anymore.

These kinds of contracts allow producers to suspend and/or fire participants for pretty much any reason unilaterally.

So yeah, it’s a contract matter.

It’s an at-will employment state, which means his employer has the right to terminate the contract at any time.

Louisiana courts have basically interpreted this employment-at-will doctrine to mean that the employer has almost unlimited discretion and authority over the employee and may utilize the employee in any manner necessary in order to benefit the business. This means that an employer may legally hire, fire, suspend, or discipline any employee at any time for any reason—good or bad—or for no reason at all.

That’s from the Louisiana Workforce Commission, and unless you are one of a few protected classes, you’re an at-will employee, such as when you’re called for jury duty, military service, etc. (page 29).

Put another way, if you don’t like an employer disciplining an employee in the way you see here, then you need to speak out against at-will employment and the nature of the relationship between employer and employee.

Right. I mean if the GOP was sincere about being the Civil Rights Party after 1964. They wouldn’t have nominated Goldwater and Nixon wouldn’t have embraced the Southern Strategy. There was a time when the Republicans were the superior party on civil rights but there never was a time when conservatives were more forward thinking on race than liberals because the essence of liberalism is forward thinking.

re: #67 Targetpractice

I was having an argument last night with a wingnut over the idea that the Robertsons could just choose to grab anything of the show that’s not bolted down, down the very trademark, and take it to another network if A&E didn’t meet their demands. Think that a possibility?

It will depend on who holds the trademarks/copyright on the show. If there are non-compete clauses, which would seem like SOP, then they’d have a hard time going to another network without changing up the concept.

If the family owns the copyright/trademarks, and there isn’t a noncompete, then they could use that as a bargaining chip to go to another network. But all too often, the producers/networks have all the cards on the contracts - that they have the noncompetes and trademark/copyright ownership.

I liked it when they had Paul Ryan show his “hipness” by showing that he had favorite bands that were popular 35 years ago. I mean don’t get me wrong. I love AC/DC, Led Zep, etc but that was just kind of sad. Granted not as sad as him lying about his marathon times. I mean you run marathons already which is admirable. No need to lie about times.

Far as I can tell, A&E registered the “Duck Dynasty” trademark when the show was created. The Robertsons had a show on the Outdoor Channel, but it didn’t go by the same name. My assumption at this point was that the idea that they could just quit and take the show on the road seemed fanciful, as A&E likely has the contract set up so that any decision on the family’s part to bug out would mean surrendering enough control over the show and intellectual property as to leave them with no way to resume on another station.

First, if Leviticus says “you shall not lie with a man as you lie with a woman” where does that leave me as a woman? And if I’m not supposed to lie with men, where does that leave the men lying?

Second, if Leviticus is the end all and be all of the Roberson’s moral life, do they eat shellfish? Have they spent any time witnessing to potential customers outside the local Red Lobster?

George Takei:

Many fans asked for my thoughts on the “Duck Dynasty” controversy. They pressed and pressed, but I refused to quack.

But I can’t duck this issue forever. I don’t really care feather someone on a reality show said something about gays that didn’t fit the bill. He’s entitled to his opinion, even if it’s for the birds. But the network also is worried about flocking with its base, so if it feels it should drake him over the coals for making his fowl comments, so be it.

So that’s migrate opinion.

So much awesome there.

If you can’t get an annulment (with enough money), you are screwed.

There is a lot to be said for determining compatibility of every kind before marriage, but marriage is also a lot of cooperation, sharing and planning, and some people are just lazy wankers and don’t want to do the work once the initial infatuation, sexual or otherwise, is over.

Etymology (from Wikipedia page on “squirrel”)

The word “squirrel”, first specified in 1327, comes from Anglo-Norman esquirel from the Old French escurel, the reflex of a Latin word sciurus. This Latin word was borrowed from the Ancient Greek word σκίουρος, skiouros, which means shadow-tailed, referring to the bushy appendage possessed by many of its members.

The native Old English word, ācweorna, survived only into Middle English (as aquerne) before being replaced. The Old English word is of Common Germanic origin, with cognates such as German Eichhorn, Norwegian ikorn/ekorn, Dutch eekhoorn, Swedish ekorre and Danish egern.

No. Because I’m convinced that’s all it is.

Back in late July, Phil Robertson was making noise about leaving the show and that he didn’t think he’d be on much longer, and that it would go on just fine without him:

‘Duck Dynasty’ patriarch Phil plans to leave show

What’s the best way to speed that process along? Saying something he knows will ignite controversy. And he just happens to say those things so they’re published right in time for the holidays? He gets to leave the show before the end of the year, A&E looks good to most of its advertisers and outside groups by suspending him for what he says, and in both cases they make money off the scandal. It’s win-win.

‘Duck Dynasty’ Comments Could Spur Merchandise Sales, Experts Predict

Unlike controversies that erupt when a high profile personality is suspended for drug use or domestic violence, Robertson’s is tied to the type of difference in religious values that could rally consumers to his cause. A spokesman for A&E, which airs Duck Dynasty and suspended Robertson indefinitely for his remarks in GQ article, declined to comment for this story. However, a network source confirmed that while the show has a wide national audience, it’s especially strong in the southern and southwestern U.S. — particularly the Bible Belt - where for many viewers’ faith can drive shopping habits.

If that’s the case and if the rest of the Robertsons decide to walk in support of Big Daddy Phil, I hope A&E tells them to pound sand and lawyer up.

In the meantime, I’m sure that they’d all just sob into the huge bags of money that they’ve all made from the show so far and from Duck Commander (which, perversely, will most likely see even more sales from all of this).

And what were to happen if one of Robertson’s employees (does he have any?) were to shut down his duck call lathe and start talking about how he supports pro-choice groups and that his co-workers are wrong about Christianity? Papa Robertson would probably and promptly tell him to “git the heck off my property!” So why all of a sudden is this nitwit a victim of his employer, A&E, decision to flip the tables and protect it’s image and brand?

The scary ass facet of this is the number of people who somehow think that this is a battle over first amendment rights (and also think its Obama’s fault). People don’t know nor do they seem to care to know about how the U.S. government functions. They blindly believe the stupid crap that comes out of Palin and Hanity’s mouth. Now its a war on christians as if this is some third world country were groups are massacred based on their religious beliefs.

I recently did a stint as an adjunct professor at a law school teaching 1L’s, among other things, the structure of how the government works under the constitution and you would all be appalled at how this completely shocked many of the students (all college grads). It was like they totally thought the Breitbart/Cruz/Jindal-esque version of the constitution was the real deal and not some made up liberal commie version envisioned by the Founders like Alexander Hamilton….

For those of you lizards who have young lizards, for the love of all that is holy, teach them early on how thie federal government works otherwise idiots like Robertson will wind up running for public office and win after they tell everyone that liberals hate jesus and he is the last line of defense of the Founder’s ideals that this country be run by jesus-freaks.

No offense meant toward JC, he’s a good guy in my book ;)

re: #171 Political Atheist

And IIRC evangelical is not a Muslim thing. (?) Which makes sense to me, if God is really on your side who needs a big pitch? Especially that awful ‘prosperity” faith thing. *shudder*

There are Muslims who proselytize, but they usually don’t do it door-to-door like the Christians, which is what I was referring to. One look at my hijab and me explaining to them that I’ve “been there, done that” and am not interested in going back is usually enough to make them smile uncomfortably & skedaddle.

Yeah, that whole “prosperity gospel” thing is a huge scam. Ugh.
