Friday Afternoon Jam: Sarah Jarosz, NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Bluegrass’ most beloved pros often play well into their 80s and 90s, so it would surprise no one if our children’s children’s children turn up at a Sarah Jarosz concert 70 years from now. The singer and multi-instrumentalist first surfaced as an 18-year-old wunderkind with the release of 2009’s Song Up In Her Head, which generated the first of what will likely be many Grammy nominations; now a grizzled 22, she’s out performing songs from her fine new third album, Build Me Up From Bones.

That record forms the basis of Jarosz’s recent concert at the NPR Music offices, performed with the aid of fiddler Alex Hargreaves and cellist Nathaniel Smith. All polished young pros, the three breezed in happily and knocked us out with a careful mix of technical proficiency and poppy warmth. It’s an enduring combination, as this sweet little set of songs amply demonstrates. —STEPHEN THOMPSON

Here I am, soiling a fresh music thread with a stinky ol’ topic:

America (Texas in particular), 2013:

Give creationism a chance

The National Academy of Science makes this statement: Scientists and theologians have written eloquently about their awe and wonder at the history of the universe and of life on this planet, explaining that they see no conflict between their faith in God and the evidence for evolution.

Einstein, Galileo and Newton all believed in God — or a “Great Designer” — but disputed whether God was involved in our personal lives.
Even Darwin invited — and even encouraged — discussion on evolution vs creationism.

The great men who framed our Constitution professed in the absolute assurance of a Creator, and we still believe that strongly enough to put the words “In God We Trust” on our currency.
It doesn’t say “In Science We Trust.”

And with all that — you say it’s not even worthy of debate and discussion in our classrooms? And they call Christians closed-minded? Go figure.

It’s cool to see Bluegrass take off. I remember my Dad listening to it a lot as a kid. I really loved the Inside Lllewyn Davis concert show that Showtime had. Man there were some great performers on that.

The tweet was subsequently picked up on Valleywag and widely circulated on Twitter. The IAC communications office issued a response, noting that Sacco was currently on a flight.

“This is an outrageous, offensive comment that does not reflect the views and values of IAC,” a statement to [The Hollywood Reporter] read. “Unfortunately, the employee in question is unreachable on an international flight, but this is a very serious matter, and we are taking appropriate action.”

Exclusive: Secret Contract Tied NSA and Security Industry Pioneer | Reuters

(Reuters) - As a key part of a campaign to embed encryption software that it could crack into widely used computer products, the U.S. National Security Agency arranged a secret $10 million contract with RSA, one of the most influential firms in the computer security industry, Reuters has learned.

Documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden show that the NSA created and promulgated a flawed formula for generating random numbers to create a “back door” in encryption products, the New York Times reported in September. Reuters later reported that RSA became the most important distributor of that formula by rolling it into a software tool called Bsafe that is used to enhance security in personal computers and many other products.

Undisclosed until now was that RSA received $10 million in a deal that set the NSA formula as the preferred, or default, method for number generation in the BSafe software, according to two sources familiar with the contract. Although that sum might seem paltry, it represented more than a third of the revenue that the relevant division at RSA had taken in during the entire previous year, securities filings show.

Another saga in “MY ASSHOLE NEIGHBOR!”

He decided on his own to spray paint the security screens on his apartment and another apartment, without letting me or the owners know ahead of time. He dropped a can, which popped and sprayed paint all over the place, then asked my kids to tell my wife to clean it up. When my wife asked WTH he was doing, he started going nuts and swearing in front of about a half dozen grade-schoolers. I show up, ask him what the problem is and he says we keep harassing him and calls us the jerks.

Owners are hitting him with ANOTHER breach of contract and I called the cops on him.

The Freepers are taking the Utah decision in their usual calm, rational manner:

So the States don’t have the right to define marriage

And the anarchy continues.

I still haven’t found in the U.S. Constitution or the Bill of Rights where it says that two men can marry each other. Haven’t found jack about a woman’s choice to murder her baby either. Must be some of those goofyass “progressive” things the commie libs are always coming up with. The Constitution DOES NOT ADDRESS homosexual marriage.

[Note: It doesn’t address the internet, Duck Dynasty, or an Air Force either, but don’t tell this Freeper that.]

Obama activist judge.
Pending appeal to the 10th circuit….so the matter isn’t decided yet.

Though it seems that the leftist wacko judges are intentionally sticking it to conservative Christians right before Christmas.

It is time for the House to start bringing impeachment proceedings against these out of control federal judges and have them explain themselves before the American People. I bet a lot of this foolishness will soon get stopped.

Loving v. Virginia is the way that SCOTUS will ultimately rule on same-sex marriage.

It’ll be almost the same decision verbatim, with necessary changes re: same-sex couples/interracial couples.

I figure in less than five years. Maybe as few as two.

[Note: this was in response to the previous comment]

Then Loving needs to be overturned. It was a faulty decision as well. It didn’t represent the will of the people.

The states and by extension the Citizens are subject to the whims of a perverted unelected Federal Judiciary.

Even the Mormons couldn’t stem the flow of the sodomite urge to marry and reproduce…what together? bm’s??
DISGUSTING, unnatural and sinful. What on EARTH sends a boy/man to another boy/man? What sickness?

The Mormons have gone major “tolerant” in the last year.

Only observant Catholics will fight through to the end.

judges should not make law, the state government should simply refuse to honor the decision

WE vote for laws that are thrown out by appointed judges and the powers that be commit crime after crime and are not called to account-indeed they prosper.
A reckoning is coming and the longer it takes getting here the harder it will be.

[Note: This is in response to the “tolerant Mormons” comment above]

Ever since the dawn of the Internet the Mormons lost their insular, protected little world. They have been BLEEDING Mormons for years now and have had to become “tolerant,” allowing blacks and even Indians into their conclaves. They are still losing to the REAL world of Jesus Christ.

I suppose it comes to a shock to Mormons that Jesus and Lucifer were NOT brothers, as the Mormons believe.
It never hurts to know the truth about Jesus.

The Catholic Church is the oldest living and continuous institution on the planet in all its history. It will survive the Mormons. If it can survive Islam and Hollywood it can survive anything

same gender people can NOT reproduce….
they want to call what they do as “natural” but in the same breath, they are using unnatural means to obtain children….

I beg every freeper to use whatever influence they have to prevent any of their offspring or other relatives or friends or neighbors from giving away babies to homosexuals….do not donate sperm…do not donate ova….do not be a breeder for them….

Utah should be so proud. Now all they need is their cut of the 50 million freeloading foreigners who illegally oozed their way into America under the cover of darkness to take a swing at the BIG piñata.

re: #71 Eclectic Cyborg

It’s pretty SOP for an AG who’s lost a case like this to beg the next higher court to stop all the marriages until they can rule on it. When the 10th takes this and the NM case together, and under the assumption that uphold both decisions, then the AGs will simply appeal to SCOTUS to put its own hold on all marriages pending a decision on whether they’ll let the decision stand or take up the case.

Maybe then they’ll finally secede and everybody will be a winner.

If Austin is allowed to stay in the US, the rest of the state is free to do whatever the hell they want.

Of course, the same people bitching about seceding haven’t exactly thought about what will happen to their bank accounts or stock portfolios, to say nothing about the Border Patrol and the military pulling up stakes and leaving. That would be a hoot.

On what grounds could he block it? A judge already ruled.

Figuratively, you can’t unmix a cake. He’s asking a TRO till the appeal is decided on that principle - you can’t unwed these couples.

Make sure Austin keeps a large airport under its control so that an airlift can be started to keep it viable once the Wall goes up.

True and it’s worth nothing that the judge in the California case was a Reagan appointee. One that the right cried couldn’t be “impartial” because he was gay yet you know those folks would have no problem with a born again Christian deciding the case.

I think what’s being said here is that it probably would have happened if this was a Clinton or Carter appointee. But your point is true and this is a big reason that it’s great to have Obama in over Romney. Romney would have the same conservative cookie cutter judges that we’ve been seeing since the Reagan years. He made no secret of the fact that he wants Scalia clones on the high court..

So, if marriage is all about procreation, then those folks who have gotten married but chosen to not have kids are what? Not deserving of marriage? Only if you’ve had kids you are entitled to marriage?

Or is it only when you have the capacity? Oh wait, you can still have the capacity courtesy of surrogacy or adoption to raise a child.

Or, is it because the baby has to be from your DNA? Well, IVF and surrogacy can mean 50% of the DNA is from someone in the SSM relationship.

But then again, SSM doesn’t affect anyone’s traditional marriage one iota. It might mean that some venues might have new competition for booking with more marriages expected, and divorce lawyers might get some new business (and address some interesting issues in SSM divorces), but it’s otherwise not affecting anyone who was already married in any of these states, and it wont affect anyone contemplating getting married in those states.

Govt drops objection to publishing secret opinion

bigstory.ap.org

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration has dropped its objection to the publication of a secret court opinion on the law that authorizes the National Security Agency’s bulk collection of millions of Americans’ telephone records.

“The Justice Department told the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court in a filing Friday that the department won’t object if the court decides to publish nonclassified portions of its opinion that don’t harm an ongoing law enforcement investigation.

“The American Civil Liberties Union and the Media Freedom and Information Access Clinic at Yale Law School had asked the court to release opinions on the meaning, scope and/or constitutionality of a legal provision under which the records are collected — Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act.”

Paul Souders:

“…The bear swam up to the iceberg, ducked under and stayed underwater for several seconds as I moved my zodiac into position and then held out the camera on a six-foot boom near the entrance. I didn’t fire until she came up to breathe and take a look at me, and I kept firing the shutter as she submerged again. She hung there, just below the surface, watching me, then came up for another breath before swimming away. I couldn’t see her from where I sat in my small zodiac boat; I was shooting blind with the wide angle. I sensed it was a unique situation, but the first thought in my mind was that I really didn’t want to screw up. I’d already dunked the remote radio trigger and camera into the salt water, and had to jury rig a replacement cable by chewing off the copper wires and hand-splicing it together. I don’t know how, but somehow it worked.”

Or, is it because the baby has to be from your DNA? Well, IVF and surrogacy can mean 50% of the DNA is from someone in the SSM relationship.

The fascinating new horizon in parenthood was on display not long ago with that UK case of defective mitochondria leading to a project where they created a zygote with three parents.

You can have three parents. So, in a SSM couple, if they are two women, one woman can provide the ovum with the mitochondria, and the other can provide the autosomal DNA + X chromosome, and they can find some guy to provide the other set of 23 chromosomes.

The AFA will not approve, but it is possible.

Future Families:

Consider this scenario: In a F-F gay marriage, both women can bear each other’s children.
Steps:
1) an ovum from one of the females (A) is fertilized by donor sperm;
2) when the new zygote becomes two cells they are separated. The nucleus from one is implanted in an ovum from B.
3) The first zygote is then implanted in woman B, the second in woman A.

After 9 months you will end up with almost identical twins - differing in mtDNA but nearly perfectly identical nuclear DNA.

And, if you are worried that the children might really want to know who their biological grandparents were, the donor sperm can come from a brother of one of the two women, if one is available. Which is kind of neat, really.

What say? Shall we go for it?

Federal Judge Strips Religious Tax Exemption From Preachers, Declares It Unconstitutional

In the court’s opinion, Judge Barbara Crabb of the Western District of Wisconsin wrote that 26 U.S. C. § 107(2) “violates the establishment clause… because the exemption provides a benefit to religious persons and no one else, even though doing so is not necessary to alleviate a special burden on religious exercise.”

Within the 43 page decision, the court cited that the tax exemption costs taxpayers billions. At least $2.3 billion has been stashed away by supposed “men of god” over a five year period between 2002 and 2007 alone.

According to the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), the organization that brought the suit, the tax exemption allowed “ministers of the gospel” to exclude a housing allowance from their income.

The tax exemption was passed by Congress in the 1950s along with other violations of the Constitution.
The exemption was sponsored by Congressman Peter Mack, who urged pastors be compensated by the US government for “carrying on such a courageous fight against this [godless and anti-religious world movement].” You would think words such as these would have come out of the mouth of a Republican, but oddly enough, Mack was a Democrat.

Of course, the fact that Mack was a Democrat is irrelevant. The point is that the law he supported is totally unconstitutional. As Crabb states in the ruling, “Some might view a rule against preferential treatment as exhibiting hostility toward religion, but equality should never be mistaken for hostility. It is important to remember that the establishment clause protects the religious and nonreligious alike.”

Every so often i think about sending something on the twitter account I’ve got. Then I think about how many times I delete emails. And the times I’ve sent something by email only to apologize. And the times I’ve made a spur of the moment comment in conversation that, if I’m lucky, is only embarrassing. re: #281 FemNaziBitch

Onto the Gospel of Luke —Jesus comes to Rome …

You could be reading the Gospel of the Egyptians instead:

Despite the paucity of the extant fragments, the theology of the Gospel of the Egyptians is clear: each fragment endorses sexual asceticism as the means of breaking the lethal cycle of birth and of overcoming the alleged sinful differences between male and female, enabling all persons to return to what was understood to be their primordial and androgynous state. […]

An English translation of the referenced writings:

Clem. Alex. Strom. iii. 9. 64.

Whence it is with reason that after the Word had told about the End, Salome saith:

Until when shall men continue to die?

(Now, the Scripture speaks of man in two senses, the one that is seen, and the soul: and again, of him that is in a state of salvation, and him that is not: and sin is called the death of the soul) and it is advisedly that the Lord makes an answer:

So long as women bear children.

66. And why do not they who walk by anything rather than the true rule of the Gospel go on to quote the rest of that which was said to Salome: for when she had said,

‘I have done well, then, in not bearing children?’

(as if childbearing were not the right thing to accept) the Lord answers and says:

Every plant eat thou, but that which hath bitterness eat not.

iii. 13. 92. When Salome inquired when the things concerning which she asked should be known, the Lord said:

When ye have trampled on the garment of shame, and when the two become one and the male with the female is neither male nor female.

In the first place, then, we have not this saying in the four Gospels that have been delivered to us, but in that according to the Egyptians.

So, my offer to build a new Homo sapiens through engineering seems, well, down right Godly.

What I love about the whole thing is these are the same people who demanded MSNBC fire Martin Bashir or called for the removal of anything Dixie Chicks after they criticized Bush. Robertson got off tame compared to those two even though his statements were arguably the most offensive since they attacked an entire group rather than individuals like Bashir and the DC’s did. It’s pretty sad that this is what gets conservative America up in arms though. I think that’s the most sad thing about the whole story really. Not that I don’t find Robertson’s statements deplorable but I find it even more pathetic that a man getting suspended for very bigoted language upsets conservatives but not people who would lose their health care if they ever got their repealed ACA fantasy.

Well I think Virginia could be a possibility. That’s one reason why even though I cannot stand McAuliffe that I happily supported Herring for AG over Obenshain. Herring won’t defend the state’s stupid ban on SSM and civil unions. Obenshain despite his playing a social moderate would do so eagerly.

I’m honestly of the thought that he did this on purpose knowing the controversy it would draw. It will be interesting to see what their profits look like next quarter but I expect them to rise. I think he was preaching to a choir who he knows will buy his products even more if they know definitively he;’s on “their side.” Kind of like how the nuts rushed to Chik-A-Filay as its CEO became more outspoken with his views on homosexuals. Grrrrr.

I understand why some people need to have extreme criminals killed, although I disagree. But the efforts to hide from themselves what they are doing really pick my ass.

If it were up to me executions would be carried out by kneeling the person down and putting a bullet in their head. I’d also fill the job of executioner by conscription. Every person old enough to vote could possibly receive a letter that reads, “You are required to appear at this prison on this date where you will shoot this person.” Refusing will mean either prison or community service.

I suspect many people won’t be so anxious to have people killed if they have to do it themselves.
