Saturday Afternoon Strings: Chris Thile and Michael Daves at NPR

The first time I heard Chris Thile play mandolin I was sure I was listening to a recording that was speeded up because it seemed almost inhumanly fast, but no… that’s really him. The guy’s a flat-picking monster, and his guitar partner Michael Daves is no slouch either.

Thile and Daves play the traditional bluegrass music of icons Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs with a New York City intensity. Watch the dexterous duo perform songs from their album Sleep With One Eye Open at the NPR Music offices.

Set List:
“Sleep With One Eye Open”
“Rabbit In The Log”
“Bury Me Beneath The Willow”
“Billy In The Lowground”
“It Takes One To Know One”
“Roll In My Sweet Baby’s Arms”

They have holes in their heads…

A STUDY OF PERUVIAN TREPANATION IN 1000 YEAR OLD SKULLS

Evidence shows that healers in Peru practised trepanation — a surgical procedure that involves removing a section of the cranial vault using a hand drill or a scraping tool — more than 1,000 years ago to treat a variety of ailments, from head injuries to heartsickness.

Excavating burial caves in the south-central Andean province of Andahuaylas in Peru, UC Santa Barbara bioarchaeologist Danielle Kurin and her research team unearthed the remains of 32 individuals that date back to the Late Intermediate Period (ca. AD 1000-1250). Among them, 45 separate trepanation procedures were in evidence. Kurin’s findings appear in the current issue of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

“…from 25,000 to 10,000 years ago the lower volume Wisconsin glaciation carved many of the glacial features seen today. Burned Ridge is made of the terminal moraine (rubble dump) of the largest of these glaciers to affect the area. Today this hummocky feature is covered with trees and other vegetation. Smaller moraines from a less severe part of the Pinedale were formed just below the base of each large valley in the Teton Range by alpine glaciers. Many of these piles of glacial rubble created depressions that in modern times are filled with a series of small lakes (Leigh, String, Jenny, Bradley, Taggart, and Phelps). Jackson Lake is the largest of these and was impounded by a recessional moraine left by the last major glacier in Jackson Hole.”en.wikipedia.org

The NSA is going after Appelbaum!!!1!!

“When I flew away for an appointment, I installed four alarm systems in my apartment,” Appelbaum told the paper after discussing other situations which he said made him feel uneasy. “When I returned, three of them had been turned off. The fourth, however, had registered that somebody was in my flat - although I’m the only one with a key. And some of my effects, whose positions I carefully note, were indeed askew. My computers had been turned on and off.”

Of course if anybody did want something on his computer wouldn’t they have just taken it? I mean, it all being super encrypted and all that?

Surgeons have been saw crazy for a long time.

Saw a trepanation exhibit at the Smithsonian a few years back. It was often used to allow “bad spirits” to leave the body. Think schizophrenia. They had one poor guy’s skull that looked like chicken wire. Must have been a hardy soul to survive having thirty, quarter-sized chunks of his skull taken out over decades.

16 RealityBasedSteve  Sat, Dec 21, 2013 3:36:51pm

I hate being an idiot. I ruined 15 dollars worth of acrylic blanks trying to drill them before I realized that my brad point bit no longer had a brad for a point and was skittering all over the place. Once and great while I’ll have one shatter when I drill them, so the first time just annoyed me.

The worst part is I KNOW BETTER!!!! I just got brain-locked and kept trying the same thing again and again and they just kept blowing. Luckily they weren’t contract jobs, just some stuff I wanted to do for inventory. Of course now I’ve blown up all my ‘nice’ looking blanks, and all I have left in the drawer are the ones that I get as ‘freebies’ when I order stuff. (In other words, the stuff my suppliers couldn’t sell, and are just trying to get rid of :-) ) /rant_over

It looked fantastic and props to Ken Levine for addressing the racial inequality theme. However, it really bugged me that they just up and dropped it halfway through. Also, going essentially Magic Balance Fairy on Daisy Fitzroy (she’s an oppressed black woman, now she’s a child killer!) bugged me.

Admittedly, since I played it over a long period of time, I just didn’t quite get the implications of the story line until I researched it online. That said, it’s a really ambitious narrative that’s fairly unique in video gaming.

Now, off to play something relaxing like Heavy Rain…

And welcome to Obamacare

I can’t imagine how that would have felt, just don’t have any kind of a frame of reference, like if you told me that gold melted at 2000* F I don’t have a reference for that, other than HOT. Same thing, to have a hole drilled in the skull. Next time my doc goes “This may sting a little bit” I figure at least he’s not using scraping my skull open with a sharpened stone.

Well, if you really think about it, Daisy’s change from one universe to another really does make a lot of sense. One thing about revolutions in history is that, with the odd exception, the revolutionaries have generally killed off all traces of the old order. Sometimes it was to end their legitimacy as rulers, other times it was just out of past grievances, and others it was out of utter insanity. See the executions of the Russian royal family for a good example.

Overall, I thought the way they handled the swings between order and chaos, revolution to control, seemed to be pretty inspired. Certainly in keeping with the way they handled things in Bioshock. Yeah, it was a bit heavy-handed at time, but that’s because reality doesn’t always tend to be subtle and the people we think of as heroes have their dark sides.

Those of you who accuse Republicans of automatically supporting the rich over everyone else are not being fair. As the hate campaign against Elon Musk proves, the right will only support billionaires who are on board with their vision of a patriarchal, semi-feudal, backward looking society based on the hallucinations of ancient Middle Eastern sheep herders.

He doesn’t have to produce them himself. Tesla has deals with both Daimler and Toyota to produce electric power train systems for them. The Smart, Mercedes and Toyota brands are all going to use his technology in their electric cars.

If Tesla could come up with something similar to a Dodge Ram 1500 that was in that price range they’d have a hell of a time keeping them in stock. It would have to be able to carry the load a work truck does too, as well as tow a trailer. I know a lot of guys who use trucks for work (The Husband and every guy he knows pretty much), if they could get out of paying 50-150 dollars a week for gas, it would be a HUGE deal.

I won’t go so far as to call Musk another Henry Ford, but he certainly is walking the same path. People have no concept of history anymore, no understanding that the automobiles we take for granted today were themselves once considered “toys” of the rich and the idea that the horse would be replaced by them regarded as ridiculous. It took men of vision, like Ford, to combine mass production with the automobile and make it available to the common man.

He’s not Ford, but he’s definitely got a long-term vision. He’s making deals with the other manufacturers to get his electric power train system technology out there (saving the other companies the effort and cost of developing their own in-house) into various cars. Tesla is working on a compact car that would be priced under $30K. He’s also looking to expand the accessibility of electric car charging stations across the country.

Get your tech out there to people, make your own cars more affordable, and work to address the primary limitation of electric car ownership (i.e., the severe lack of refueling stations) and you could work to change the entire landscape.

Clearly it is not possible that the mass production of a novel product could lead to improvements in the efficiency, or cost savings, which would render that new technology more affordable.

That’s been one of the problems with the adoption of hydrogen and fuel-cell powered cars, the inability of any one company to develop and promote a solution that all others would be willing to adopt, if only out of fear of a company gaining a monopoly on the tech. Musk seems to be doing that for electric cars and cutting through all the bullshit in the process.

Getting packed up to move into my new condo, first time home owner!

That part is great. Moving, of course, sucks…even when it is only about a mile away. Added to the anticipated stresses of moving are (a) the holidays, (b) the very nasty start to winter here in Chicagoland, and (c) health problems…fortunately headed the right direction there, but still only about 80% in terms of energy level.

As I am making my 4th move in 9 years and I don’t plan to do so again for a VERY long time, it seemed like a smart idea to streamline a bit (new condo is spacious but not a bunch more storage than current apartment). Well, I am still moving 11 (!) boxes of CDs and 6 crates of books. The books and CDs I felt ready to part with only fill ONE box.

Two days before moving I am feeling pretty damn stupid for not at least storing the CDs with their booklets in plastic sheets and cutting down the load. I do have at least two thirds of the audio library ripped into digital, but I am way too paranoid about multiple hard drive crashes to get rid of the originals!

27 year olds these days are soft. They’re not fighting commies and Nazis. They’re electing them!

Reading now - good!

it was harder to ignore the near criminal disconnect between Washington and the rest of the country, especially in an industry that has turned neighbors against each other while its instigators clock out and meet for a beer together, skilled actors who in many cases spend the day feigning hatred for each other on camera but are actually bound by their shared nihilism and reckless self-absorption. In Washington, a divided America is good for business.

A true rarity: a severely negative firearms review

Gun Review: ATI Omni Gen2 Hybrid Polymer AR15 Lower

While polymers are all the rage for guns, they aren’t yet up to being the primary material for an Ar-15 lower receiver. This is the first gun article I’ve ever read where the review calls the gun ‘unsafe’:

They have fixed the problem of the polymer failing around the rear take down pin and the buffer tube collar, but there are just too many other problems with them right now to be able to recommend that you run out and buy a polymer lower. If you happen to want to build a nice, light rifle my suggestions would be to find a good aluminum lower, and build the rifle with light materials. While some will call this a step in the right direction for polymer, it is still far from ready for the open market. These rifles, as received from ATI are, in my opinion, coupled with the opinion of two gunsmiths, unsafe. They are out of tolerance and can and will hurt someone that shoots them if ATI continue to sell them as built. Save a few more dollars and get something better and more reliable made out of aluminum. Remember, you are purposely setting off an explosion that is 3” from your face; safety is paramount and should never be compromised.

Georgia school board approves purchase of M4s for school resource officers (VIDEO)

he Gainesville, Georgia school board voted on and approved a proposal Monday to purchase M4s to be kept at three of the district’s campuses for use by school resource officers, the Gainesville Times reported.

Three Colt 6920 M4 carbines will be purchased for Gainesville High, Gainesville Middle School and Wood’s Mill Academy. The rifles will be stored in safes which feature biometric technology and will only be accessible by the school resource officers by means of their unique fingerprints. However, the guns will not be stored at the school when the officers are not on duty. The estimated cost for the project is $6,000, which will be split evenly between the school district’s fund and the Gainesville Police Department.

“We have a very strong relationship with Gainesville Police Department,” Chairwoman Maria Calkins said. “We work with them every day to protect the kids and make Gainesville City Schools a safe place.”

In fact, it was the Gainesville Police Department who originally proposed the idea to purchase rifles for the schools nearly a year ago following the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Well, wouldn’t you be, if you grew up in a country where the best chance for success one has is being lucky? Folks of my generation and younger, the ones who came of age in the 90s, didn’t grow up with the Hollywood ideal of stumbling across success. The lottery is a tax on people who can’t do math. Besides, most of us have become disillusioned with that as well. We still will tell each other what we’d do if we won, but it seems these days that the winners fall into one of three categories: The pensioner who’ll drop dead before they collect even half of the money, the working poor person who ends up blowing through the lump sum, and finally the large group of people who end up dividing up the winnings.

Putin has a sloping and bulbous nose at the end. That and he was already balding in 1988. Including the fact that he was stationed in East Germany at the time. It’s like an post facto conspiracy.

RBS

Yep. And I toured the USS North Carolina in September. It’s in it’s WW2 configuration*, which means the bunking had to cover all the crew for the extra AAA guns they crammed onto the design in the early 40s. Lots of small rooms for the junior officers squirreled away all over in the superstructure. I think the biggest “rooms” I saw were the galleys. Engine rooms and barbettes maybe larger, but full of equipment and often sub-divided for watertight integrity.

Still nothing quite as cramped as the subs though. Hot bunking and sleeping on top of torpedoes. Sub design, especially in the WW2 period was an big set of compromises in order to get range, capacity, and diving and handling characteristics.

* - The USS New Jersey and USS Iowa are both in a 70s or 80s configuration. All the 20mm and 40mm guns removed, a few fewer 5” turrets, and missiles (Harpoon, Tomahawk) and Phalanx systems added. Less crew complement as a result and therefore a bit more individual room.

Yeah, a Soviet sailor with a Browing Hi-Power is good for a laugh. I do like that they at least took the time to acknowledge Able Archer 83 and the subsequent paranoia it created in the Soviets that the whole thing was a prelude to a nuclear strike.

It is a good episode. One thing I’ve given Davies and Moffat a lot of credit for is bringing back creatures and species from the old series in new and interesting ways, while avoiding the camp of the old days.

Cold War, the 2nd Doctor and Clara episode, was set on a Soviet Delta-III class submarine.

The interior spaces however were more of a Typhoon-Class.

Also, because of Austerity in Britain, instead of having Soviet Gun Props, they had American Gun Props.

But, I still adored the episode.

I think Moffat did a great job of undoing a lot of what Davies screwed up with the whole Time War handwave to explain why the Time Lords were no longer around, but did it in a way that he didn’t just effectively unwrite the last 7 seasons.

Not only would they have to reboot it, but anything and everything that A&E has trademarked and copyrighted would likely be verboten. Catchphrases, logos, the show name, any websites, apps, etc. would all revert to the network.

And since A&E are owned jointly by Hearst and ABC-Disney, they’ve got a whole bunch of lawyers at the ready to defend those rights.

It has come to my attention that one of the big things that the Pro-Life movement is talking about, is how abortion promotes domestic violence. I’m not sure quite where they are coming from, but it is definitely something that needs to be brought to light.

Abortion does not by itself bring about domestic violence. One of the big things surrounding it, is the stigma of abortion. The act itself is not what brings about the violence, but the weight and anger put towards it. I’m going to link several articles below, citing both about the connection between abortion and domestic violence, as well as an article about forced abortion and domestic violence.

I hope this helps to enlighten some people.

If true, they might be thinking of “going over the top” as it is now called.

Traditional cable idiom of pre-programmed networks sold in general packages is starting to see declines. For the first time, last year the number of traditional cable TV subscribers went down.

The new model being pushed, after all these experiments with Hulu, Netflix, Youtube, etc. is that the show makers will directly sell their products through an on-demand system.

Dick Dynasty could probably find itself in even more homes if they work on it, given all this publicity.

I suppose FamilySearch has to bandwidth limit these sort of mass searches to conserve on the bandwidth for actual human searchers, but at the current rate it’s going to take days to get the results in.

If there is any genre that lays bare the creative bankruptcy of the American music industry it has to be Christmas music.

Sure, musicians have to eat and Christmas music can pretty much be treated like a commodity; but just because something can be done doesn’t mean it should be.

Two things annoy me - (1) electronic glitz for no good reason but that some producer can do it so they go ahead and let a computer do its thing; and (2) people who can’t sing but want to pretend they can and normally hide that fact behind a curtain of electronic sound magic.

Anyway, here is Joan Baez, who fortunately for us sings well:

Here’s what is also spooky: How so many self-described God-fearin’ Americans can whine about the “War on Christmas” while simultaneously being so totally not self aware to the extent that they don’t realize that the reason the same old Christmas songs are played on radio and in stores is to get them to buy, buy, buy.

It’s about evoking feelings, in this case of nostalgia, while in a commercial setting. To move the listener from being less rational and more emotional.

I’m sorry, I don’t understand how this is an answer to my question. In general, people are pretty aware when you survey them that cultural elements get used to sell to them. You seem to be indicating you think people are unaware of this, and i’m asking you what you base that on. Yes, the “enemy” has the same desires, concerns, cares, love, that the rest of us have while at the same time intent on our destruction and saving themselves. War really is hell of our own making.

I think if it hadn’t been dubbed for showing in the US, it might not have been so well attended. If Americans have to read sub-titles, they generally don’t attend foreign movies, unless there is something really shocking or there is a lot of sex involved.

I can’t even begin to describe all the hate that I have for those “songs” and all the various “stylings” that have been inflicted upon us over the decades. To say that my hate for these “Christmas stylings” exceeds even the hate that Bryan Fischer and Phil Robertson have for Teh Ghey is not sufficient. It goes way beyond their hate.

I hate “Jingle Bells” most of all. It does not appear on that infograph, since it was composed in the 1850’s, but it has had the most horrific stylings committed on it, probably because PUBLIC DOMAIN.

The original lyrics to “Jingle Bells” were actually kind of naughty and off-color, mostly about sleigh-driving while drunk and picking up cool bitchez in your pimpin’ sleigh.

re: #372 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

Cleanse your cinematic palate with any or all of the following:

Moon
Children of Men
the film adaptation of “1984” starring John Hurt
Gattaca
Videodrome (possibly my all-time favorite movie)
Existenz
The Road

Oh, I’ve done that. I read “The Road” which I thought better than the movie, of course. One glaring thing in “The Road” which I didn’t think ring true was the boy calling his father “Papa”. What kid uses that term these days? Otherwise, even though it was a pretty bleak film, it was worthwhile. Can’t say “enjoyable” because how do you enjoy misery? I admit, though, I rather like the dystopic movies like “Children of Men” which I see as more realistic, more than “sterile future” ones like “Gattaca”. Life’s messy; we’ll never be able to “clean up” like science fictions tends to portray us.

All these morons are getting played and they’re too stupid to realize it.

All these people getting played so that A&E and the show can get more attention, even when Robertson gets to return in January, and never left airtime due to reruns.

A&E knew that he was a walking PR disaster all along. They went with it because they saw the reward outweigh the risk.

But the people who were busy defending Robertson want to ignore the racism and homophobia for some mistaken notion of free speech that simply doesn’t exist in an employer-employee at-will relationship.

It just seems so early 20th century, though, like “Father”. I don’t think it’s used at all in the south—“Dad” or “Daddy” is the preferred term here.

I could see “Papi” or “Papa” used among Hispanics, though, in the US. I’ve heard “Papi” used among Hispanic immigrants here in the south.

The critical question is: Will advertisers continue to buy airtime during the commercial breaks in Duck Dynasty? If they do, then this will just blow over and the Robertsons will go back to making money off of their schtick. If advertisers don’t buy airtime, then the show is a ‘dead duck’.

Yeah, but what do the rest of the kids in the neighborhood call their dads?

Also, in Ireland, the word “Da” is used quite frequently, and even in Gaelic, Dadaí (DAH dee), is used.

I suppose a lot of it depends on location, tradition, class, and other factors, including what the father wants to be called.

So—we should want strong security everywhere, amirite?

Weak US card security made Target a juicy target

bigstory.ap.org

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. is the juiciest target for hackers hunting credit card information. And experts say incidents like the recent data theft at Target’s stores will get worse before they get better.

“That’s in part because U.S. credit and debit cards rely on an easy-to-copy magnetic strip on the back of the card, which stores account information using the same technology as cassette tapes.

(snip)

“In most countries outside the U.S., people carry cards that use digital chips to hold account information. The chip generates a unique code every time it’s used. That makes the cards more difficult for criminals to replicate. So difficult that they generally don’t bother.”

The problem is that adopting such a system costs a good bit of money and so far its simply cheaper for large financial institutions to deal with the disruptions from weak security. Until that calculus changes, those chips won’t be adopted here.

Yikes! I guess you don’t wanna mess with people’s holiday cheer, huh? The 1826 Christmas egg nog riot at West Point:

Egg Nog: It’s All Fun and Games Until Someone Starts a Holiday Riot

December 25, 1826, at West Point was not a typical Christmas morning. Cadets stumbled from their barracks, clothes torn or astrew. Many were barefoot, cursing, still drunk from the night before. Behind the cadets, West Point’s North Barracks stood in a state of near ruin. Windows had been smashed, along with the building’s furniture. Banisters had been ripped from stairways, thrown down with other rubble. Shards of shattered plates, dishes an cups lined the ground. Looking at the mix of hungover and drunk cadets, the officer of the day dismissed the corps. It had been a long night for everyone. There had been, after all, a riot-caused by egg nog.

Thanks for posting that. Great story, and look who showed up:

Not to be denied a night of revelry, some cadets set about smuggling in liquor from nearby taverns for the holiday party. One of the cadets was Jefferson Davis, future president of the Confederacy. Jefferson had a history of bad behavior with alcohol. A member of the class of 1828, he was the first student to be arrested for going to Benny Haven, one of two taverns located near West Point and the only one which allowed students to barter for alcohol. Another time, Davis was reportedly so drunk that he fell down a 60-foot ravine. He wasn’t one to shy away from a good party, and was enthusiastically on board with the other cadets’ plan to bring booze to the holiday party.

I’ve always ranked “Das Boot” as one of the best war films ever; and you’re right, had it not been dubbed in its US release, very few would’ve seen it at all - there’s only a small niche market for subtitled/foreign films.

I saw it with subtitles in 1982(?) when it was re-released with the sound in Dolby. Small theater, lightly attended, and the four of us has choice of seats.

There’s pretty much a WP plugin for everything, you just have to know what to search for (I tried “loupe” and “lightbox” before simply searching for “magnify image”). I found several that seem to do exactly what you want, but you’ll need to look at them more closely and also pay attention to the ratings, version compatibility, and last update to make sure the developer is staying on top of things.

Police blame Palestinian militants for bus blast

bigstory.ap.org

JERUSALEM (AP) — A pipe bomb believed to have been planted by Palestinian militants exploded on board a bus in central Israel just moments after it had been evacuated, police said, in the most serious attack inside Israel in more than a year.

“The explosion came at a sensitive time in Mideast peace efforts. Israel and the Palestinians resumed talks last summer for the first time in nearly five years, and the U.S.-brokered negotiations have made little visible progress. The explosion threatened to further poison what has become a tense and negative atmosphere.

“Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said there were no injuries in the blast, which took place in the Tel Aviv suburb of Bat Yam. The explosion blew windows out of the bus and charred the sides of the vehicle.”

Hmm. Doing turkey prep.

Not as difficult as it sounds since it’s a smoked turkey breast and the only real work is reheating it. But going to do that and use the cooking time to do some rosemary and thyme roasted potatoes at the same time.

Why turkey today? Simple, I won’t be able to do it tomorrow or Tuesday evening due to dinner engagements. I’ll be the main one eating it since my brother is a vegetarian and my niece is not that fond of turkey. And if I reheat and slice up the bird today I get a carcass and time to make a killer smoked turkey broth for soup for Wednesday. Which I think both of them *will* consider eating.

Turkey soup! I did the same for Ts-giving turkey, but froze it and made soup twice. Put lots of carrots, celery and onion in it with noodles or rice and they very well might eat it. : )

Mental health series
December 22, 2013 12:00 AM
Share with others:

tweet everywhere.

Now is the time when we pause to reflect on the year that passed and give thanks. So with that in mind, I want to give special thanks to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for a series of stories the newspaper ran last week and earlier in the year. These stories — first by Joe Smydo about the mental health system and then by Mark Roth about depression — shed light on the mental health problems some residents struggle to overcome, as well as the challenges providers face to ensure these individuals have the highest quality of care.

The realities of mental health, intellectual and developmental disabilities, addictive diseases and rehabilitation needs are easily misunderstood and oftentimes overlooked, ignored and underfunded. As one of the largest and most diverse state health and human services associations in the nation, we see it every day, and we do all we can to change that.

Clearly, these are issues we simply can’t afford to overlook or ignore — and stories and series like those published by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette help to address the realities of the mental health system.

South Sudan: US Sends Special Envoy Booth
Clashes in the past week have left hundreds dead and seen tens of thousands fleeing to UN bases for protection.

news.sky.com

“South Sudan has been blighted by ethnic divisions, corruption and poverty since it won independence in 2011.

“Foreign governments, including the US, Britain, Uganda, Kenya and Lebanon, have been organising special evacuation flights to pull out their nationals.

“On Saturday four US servicemen were wounded when their aircraft came under fire in a rebel-held area.”

Will do lots of carrot/onion/celery into the stock as well. Filler will probably be rice (steamed separately and added right before serving).

For the potatoes this will be a ad hoc experiment. Will quarter a few pounds of potatoes and put in a roasting pan with garlic cloves, chopped rosemary and thyme (like you I have plants), and then put in some butter or olive oil and some white wine. Then let cook with the turkey and then turn up heat to 400 and cook another 15 minutes maybe while the turkey cools a bit.

OMgosh! I have a large and a small. bake the garlic, mash it with spices and a small amount of your favorite olive oil and eat —with or without bread.

It spreads like butter.

Thanks for that. I suffer from a more acute rather than chronic form of depression that doesn’t respond well to medication. I’ve tried meds, several, and I seem to be the poster child for all those side effects in the commercials. So, I have to muddle through it, mostly alone. Most people don’t really want to hear about it or they dismiss it as not real, especially at this time of year. I really hate the holidays because of this, if one more person tells me to “just smile and put up a tree, you’ll feel better” I am going to need a place to hide the body. I used to suck it up and plaster a smile on my face and not cry, mostly when The Teenager was little. The mission was Don’t Ruin Christmas You Selfish Ass. It happened again this year, when I confessed to a friend I hated Christmas and why and she totally negated my feelings and experiences as not being real, all in my head. So I kinda have vowed to just not tell anyone who doesn’t already know.

What helps me is outdoor activity, getting enough sleep and not pulling the covers over my head(that is the hardest part for me-being sad and not wanting to leave the house or even look at people). I see a therapist sporadically as finances allow, but honest to god, my dog has been the best thing for my illness, she makes me get up and will often just lay her head on my lap if I am sad, with all the patience of a saint. I really hope that someday our stupid culture grows up and begins to understand and embrace treatments and discussions of depression and other disorders that effect so many. Shame and isolation make suicide seem like the only answer, which is so unnecessary and such a loss for all of us.

But that’s different than what A & E did to poor St. Phil… ‘cuz well, gays are icky and might touch my food. That’s just an employer exercising their rights. If you can’t see the difference it just proves that liebruelism is a mental disease.

Funny how the RWNJs are all about the rights of the property owner / employer to decide all the rules, and how contracts are important, unless it’s A & E that’s the employer. It’s not unlike how they cheer each time public service employee pension get cut (A type of promise / contract), unless it’s the military, in which case they scream how the democraps are destroying our military. We have made a promise to these brave men and women.

They are already claiming victory in the DD matter. I suspect that what actually will get it resolved is the fact that you have a bunch of lawyers on both sides that see a good thing and will find a way to make a face saving solution that all sides can easily live with.

Shame and isolation make suicide seem like the only answer, which is so unnecessary and such a loss for all of us.

I married into a family with what we euphmistically call ‘Serotonin Issues’, so I’m keenly aware of how badly society at large understands depression, anxiety and related emotional health issues. The message when we were growing up was schizophrenic - either ‘Buck up!’, or numb yourself with tranks. And then we looked upon those poor numbed folks as weak.

My wife spent most of her life ‘faking it’, dealing with her anxiety and depression by doing the things that society expected, and wondering why they didn’t seem to be making her happy. Outwardly, she seemed happy, outgoing - even extroverted - active, always signing up for classes in this and that, joining this group and that group, and dreaming up and starting projects - projects I often had to finish. Eventually, she was diagnosed as mildly bipolar, and properly medicated, and she has been marvelling at the difference ever since. It did take a couple years for her to figure out what she really wants, when not driven by anxiety.

She tells me that one of the hardest things to deal with before was the expectation, both external and internal, that all she had to do was ‘try harder’, and her problems and anxieties would all fade away. It makes you feel guilty, and that just makes the anxiety and depression worse.

Amazing color photos of London during WWII, including from The Blitz. Twenty thousand were killed in London during The Blitz, and around 40K in Britain overall by German bombings. I can understand why Britain’s security laws are stricter, and the outlook quite different from the US, not to mention years of IRA bombings, and various and sundry plots by others that were never brought to fruition.

life.time.com

When you haven’t experienced this kind of loss of life right in your own front yard, it’s much easier to condemn your government wholesale for what you perceive to be “overreach”. So, fix the flaws but don’t throw the NSA out completely, as some would do. We will always have enemies; every country does.

Russia has even more horrific losses in living memory, so even more reason to be paranoid. Being invaded in WWII cost them a full 15% of their population, tens of millions of people — and those who lived all came out of it with vivid memories of hideous deprivation. Cities under siege, no heating fuel through the winter, eating shoe leather and wallpaper paste… it’s no wonder they’re willing to put up with a heavy hand from the government that’s kept that from happening again.

He can deny it all he wants; the ducks know.

The quintessential duck’s quack is the sound of the female mallard. Females often give this call in a series of 2-10 quacks that begin loudly and get softer. When courting, she may give a paired form of this quack. The male does not quack; instead he gives a quieter, rasping, one- or two-noted call. Ducklings make soft, shrill whistles when alarmed.allaboutbirds.org

I think the main issue with the potatoes will be seeing how well they brown. I think they’ll turn out delicious regardless. Just one of those things where the ingredients will take good together regardless unless I burn them or serve them raw.

Cracker Barrel isn’t even that good unless you like bland Southern cooking.

Thanks but no. I’ll stick to mom & pop Southern and soul food restaurants for higher quality food.

My adopted cats are the first ones I’ve had that went after toilet paper on the dispenser. I am starting to think that the shelters include training for cats in how to do it.

Cooking and wrapping presents today have been a constant battle against the feline forces of chaos. One already unrolled a roll of wrapping paper across the floor and then lay on it. The other keeps stealing the tape dispenser. O_o

First off, Mr. Thile is really talented. I enjoyed him and his group very much at the Inside Llewyn Davis concert show on Showtime. Secondly, I’m a lucky man. My brother married a wonderful woman with a wonderful family yesterday and I now have three sisters. Hope everyone has a great Sunday.

I ain’t gonna lie; I like their chicken-fried steak with the sawmill gravy (gravy good!) and their sausage and biscuits and it’s nice that they have a store less than a mile from my office. However, they’ve made it crystal clear with their DD walkback that all of the lawsuits and governmental actions against them over their treatment of gay and black employees over the years hasn’t changed a damned thing; RWNJs butter their bread and everyone else can go pound sand.

Like I said before, fuck ‘em.

That also was my favorite thing to eat there, about the only thing I would ever order there. Now I’m going to have to find a new source for when I’m jonesing.
