Utah GOP Freaks Out Over Gay Marriage, Declares Emergency, Gets Denied by Court

I never thought I’d see this happen in Utah.

Thursday’s federal court ruling that overturned Utah’s ban on marriage equality sent the Republican Party into RED ALERT mode, as you might imagine, and they filed an EMERGENCY motion for a temporary stay the next day. Today that emergency request was denied.

This is what panicky losers look like. And it’s not going to get better for them, because the days when powerful, unscrupulous reactionaries could demonize and exploit entire classes of human beings are going away, slowly but surely.

Immediately following the ruling, same-sex couples fled to the county clerk’s office to receive marriage licenses. But Utah Gov. Gary Herbert (R) denounced the decision, threatening to take action to appeal the ruling.

“I am very disappointed an activist federal judge is attempting to override the will of the people of Utah,” Herbert said of the Thursday ruling. “I am working with my legal counsel and the acting attorney general to determine the best course to defend traditional marriage within the borders of Utah.”

The 10th Circuit Appeals Court denied the governor’s emergency request “without prejudice.”

“Because the motion before us does not meet the requirements of the Federal or local appellate rules governing a request for a stay, we deny the motion,” the court held.

Until the GOP gets over its refusal to see LGBT citizens as being entitled to the same rights as heterosexual Christians, I will continue to see them as a party of bigoted dickheads. I went to my brother’s wedding yesterday. And I swear to you guys after every wedding I go to, my support for SSM gets stronger and stronger. Why? Marriage is about the union of two people in love. I just don’t know how any person can see the happily married couples we saw in the wake of the news in Utah and think “Yes, those people don’t deserve the same rights I do in love.” I know I may be guilty of youthful idealism on this issue but I don’t care. There’s no reason why we should deny gay people the same rights as straight people because of the Bible. The Bible is filled with contradictions and despite what conservative Christians believe, it is not and has never been the cornerstone of our secular law.

Charles Johnson,

I wonder what they’ll do when the supreme court rules they can no longer deny gay people the right marry?

I’m not even sure what they could do to over turn this ruling by a state court, without passing an amendment to the state constitution. That won’t do any good if the US supreme court declares state same sex marriage bans unconstitutional.

You know what, these people are the same as the people who did everything possible to make interracial marriage a crime in the past and flipped their shit over Loving. This is everything that is wrong with conservatism and the Republican Party. This party and ideology claims to champion freedom yet bitches everytime a judge rules “No, sorry you do NOT have the right to treat homosexuals like second class citizens.” I can’t “respectfully” disagree with people who see my gay friends and family as inferiors not entitled to the same freedoms and liberties I have a heterosexual male.

Traditional marriage. That’s when you or your wife cheats, the other finds out and you divorce. Then you re-marry and go to church and demonize others over not being religious or moral enough.

Speaking as someone who lives in a state where gays have been allowed to marry for a couple of years now, I can reassure the people of Utah that no existing heterosexual marriages here have been destroyed by it. Neither have people stopped getting married. After much sound and fury over it on the way to getting it passed, it turned out to be much ado over nothing. It’s not even newsworthy here anymore, just meriting the usual notice in the society pages.

Amazingly enough, churches still seem to be going on with their usual business, we have not legalized bestiality (and won’t), and most of the us have decided to move on to other things like whether fracking is a good idea and why the hell our state legislature attracts so many idiots. So much for the hyperventilating about the destruction of our way of life from the Right.

Go check Free Republic sometime. The general consensus there is that gay marriage will be decided exactly the same way that Loving was, and this is somehow a bad thing. You know, because it’s not “the will of the people”.

And yes, they’re serious. Morans.

*eyeroll*

This is everything that is wrong with conservatism and the Republican Party.

Pretty much, yeah. They spent 40+ years catering to white resentment and to the bigots, the idiots, and the religious fascists in order to win elections, and now they’ve devolved into a theocratic party.

I can’t “respectfully” disagree with people who see my gay friends and family as inferiors not entitled to the same freedoms and liberties I have a heterosexual male.

Or with the people who see women as nothing more than incubators, the poor as nothing more than moochers that should be slaves, and minorities and immigrants as stealing “Real” (read: white) America from them.

When those are your starting viewpoints, we don’t have anything to discuss. There’s no reasonable disagreement with people who are ready to dehumanize large segments of the population in order to elevate themselves.

Exactly. I mean if you want to disagree with me on fiscal policy, that’s one thing but if your party sees women and gays the way the Republican Party seems to, I not only can’t respectfully disagree, it’s hard to really even respect period such views. And then there’s xenophobia towards Muslims, Hispanic,s and others. Anyone who isn’t an English speaking conservative Christian is seen as suspicious to today’s conservative.

The author explained the problem correctly, though he failed to see that he was the problem.

WASP once stood for White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, until that group was getting too small, then they invited in the White Catholics. Then, when that group started getting to small, the Anglo-Saxon become optional.

Where they ran into problems was making the white only a little optional. They couldn’t get the Asians or Latinos to fully give into the whiteness. And now they don’t know what to do.

‘Fathers4Justice’ decides that Christmas is a perfect time to troll celebrity women.

Actresses Katie Holmes, Halle Berry and Kim Basinger are being targeted in a new ‘crummy mummy’ campaign by Fathers4Justice, which accuses them of denying their children access to their fathers.

The pressure group is using the Hollywood stars in a series of adverts criticising their childcare arrangements.

The new controversy comes after actress Kate Winslet, who has three children by three fathers, last week threatened to sue for being singled out in a Christmas advert by Fathers4Justice.

Undeterred, the group says it will continue to highlight high-profile mothers who, they say, deny their children access to their fathers for no good reason.

I’d take father’s rights groups seriously if they focused on building fathers up instead of tearing mothers down. But they don’t so I won’t.

re: #7 CriticalDragon1177

This was a federal district court ruling on the state issue. It wasn’t in state court where the appeal would have been to the State Supreme Court, which is the sole authority on the treatment of state laws under the state constitution.

The question here is the application of federal law - the Constitution - to the state law/constitutional treatment of marriage to prohibit same sex marriage.

The stay of the appeal notes that there were procedural issues. If the state/AG corrects, they might get a rehearing by the 10th Circuit, but it appears that for now those SSMs will continue.

And every one of those has ZERO effect on any other marriage in state.

It has no effect on any hetero couple previously married.

It has no effect on any hetero couple to be married.

But the bigots will hold to their position regardless of how bass-ackward it is or how bigoted it is, or how racist it is (as when the same views/ideas imposed anti-miscegenation laws until they too were found unconstitutional nationally in 1967 in Loving v. Virginia).

They were Protestants.

But that’s where the comparison stops.

White, check. Anglo-Saxon (pretty sure both had Anglo(English) decent), and Protestant. Yeah they weren’t WASPs like say the Roosevelts were but WASPs nonetheless.

Hey, I’m watching “The Sound of Music” on TV right now…when do the Oompa Loompas come in?

Right after Inspector Javert arrests the Phantom of the Opera.

A bit surprising, or perhaps I’m a bit too good willed, that it looks like a 14% group of the population opposed to IR marriage.

They have this deluded idea that youth support for SSM is just a fad. My collecting of pogs in the mid 90’s was a fad. Thinking my friends who are gay deserve the same rights of me is part of my principles.

Heh!

But would they have played in Boston?

(Edit) :)

Heh fair enough. It’s pretty funny how Boston went from being the WASP city to being idneitifed with the Irish. I always thought it was interesting how the Irish despite being mostly rural residents in Ireland became one of the most urban groups in the US. Ditto the Italians, Jews, and others. And I’m oft amused how the Scanadvians went in large numbers to place like Minnesota and Michigan that are equally as cold as their homes.

I believe it was Garrison Keiller who said the Norwegians came to Minnesota because it reminded them of home, and then after a while they remembered why they left home…
It also relates to where land was available when they emigrated.

True that.

It was Catholic-Irish folk like the Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys.

But you still had the Cabots and the Lodges.

Some interesting parallels there to today’s demographics.

It’s probably the same people.

Many of them, some of them are obviously too young to have attended those anti “race mixing” marches in sixties.

I’ve often wondered:

How would any God look at a “traditional” marriage and declare it any less worthy after any two people could marry?

How would any person of faith believe that their God would do such a thing?

How would someone look at their spouse, and say “they’re a little less special today. The vows I made to them are worth a little less” because “Adam and Steve” can make the same vows?

Nosir, I just don’t get it.

I think the GOP’s new go to bumpersticker phrase should be “It’s always an ‘activist’ judge.” These nimrods need to go pound sand. No one wants their brand of intrusive government telling everyone what religion they should be conforming to.

How can taking away civil rights be an “emergency?”

“We must stop this bliss now before it’s too late!”

I really loved their early eighties albums - before the split… \m/
