I want them to make a really good version of the Doc Savage — Man of Bronze pulp fiction novels. The one with Ron Ely doesn’t count.

Let’s see what the guide says:
How To Deal with The Ravenous Bugblatter Beast Of Traal
Phil Robertson:

The creature’s aforementioned stupidity makes it relatively easy to call a liar - if the Guide is to be believed. For, according to the Guide, calling out his blatant racism will confuse the beast so he’ll claim there was never systematic black oppression in the south. This is because (as mentioned above) the philosophy of The Ravenous Bugblatter Beast Phil and Friends is that, if they won’t admit to have seen and supported it, it never happened.

Well PLL, I managed to finally finish watching Season 7 of the new Doctor Who series. And honestly, after watching the preceding two seasons, I found it a bit…well, lacking is not the right word. Guess a better one might be grim. Between the darker TARDIS, the Doctor’s mood swings, and the general theme of his impending demise, it lacked a lot of the fun that the romps with Amy and Rory had.

I’m still not really sold on Clara yet. Perhaps because we only had a half season of her, but she hasn’t grown on me as much as Amy did or Donna before her.

I don’t know, it’s not that I dislike her, it’s just she seems at time less an action woman and more a damsel in distress. Then again, I can see that that might largely have to do with the Doctor being unsure of who she really is and initially keeping her at arms length.

I saw the opposite. She got the Doctor out of his screw-ups than the other way around.

The Doctor did treat her differently. He met her through bizarre circumstances, namely her deaths. To him, she might have been a ghost who would disappear in an instead.

Well it’s true, perhaps I’m getting too much of the “damsel in distress” vibe from having rewatched “The Crimson Horror.” She is a strong character and certainly in keeping with the idea that the best counterpart to the current Doctor is a strong woman willing to smack some sense into him.

To me, the Crimson Horror was an episode focused on the side characters.

In this case Vastra, Jenny, and Strax had to save the Doctor and Clara after the Doctor’s plan backfired spectacularly. Certainly the most spectacular backfire that Doctor has had In quite a while.

Yeah, but in some ways the same could be said for the first part of The Snowmen. Strax seems to steal the show whenever he’s on screen, even if only for a few minutes.

The song was sung commercially by crooner Harry Brannon on New York City radio in early November 1949,[citation needed] before Gene Autry’s recording hit No. 1 in the U.S. charts the week of Christmas 1949. Autry’s version of the song also holds the distinction of being the only chart-topping hit to fall completely off the chart after reaching No. 1. The official date of its No. 1 status was for the week ending January 7, 1950, making it the first No. 1 song of the 1950s.[3]

I think anyone under 60 today only really remembers the Ives version, even if Autry made it a hit.

Gene Autry was not only America’s favorite singing cowboy, he was a savvy business man. I remember all of these as an elementary schooler—of course, they appealed to us and I can still sing them all, note for note, word for word. : )

“Autry also sang the classic Ray Whitley hit “Back In The Saddle Again”,[9] as well as many Christmas holiday songs, including “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” his own composition “Here Comes Santa Claus,” “Frosty the Snowman,” and his biggest hit, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” He wrote “Here Comes Santa Claus” after being the Grand Marshall of the 1946 Santa Claus Lane Parade (Now the Hollywood Christmas Parade). He heard all of the spectators watching the parade saying “Here comes Santa Claus!” virtually handing him the title for his song. He recorded his version of the song in 1947 and it became an instant classic.”

Original recording by 13 yr old Jimmy Boyd. It was written by a Brit, Tommie Connor, who also wrote this song w/2 others, recorded by Vera Lynn (1937) and also by Nat King Cole. Connor had a long career of songwriting.

Interesting tidbit from the weekend. My 5yo goes to school where white children are a big minority. Never knew if she noticed. She plays with every kid in her class and has play dates outside school.

She asked me the other day why her skin was white and not brown I guess she does notice). I told her that everyone is different in their own special way. Some kids have brown eyes, blue eyes, red hair, freckles, etc.

Anyway, she starts to cry and says she wishes she had brown skin. I had no idea what to say to her and just gave her a hug. Small sample size (my daughter) but hopefully we are moving in the right direction.

I’m sure you remember the mass exodus of rich folks during the Eisenhower years when the Tax rates were so high on the wealthy… yeah me neither and Rand Paul could give a shit about the deficit as long as taxes on the wealthy and corporations don’t increase. Taxes would help to deal with the trend of income inequality by helping to make being poor in America less of a desperate existence.

Haha, this is still my favorite xmas song (discovered when I was about 21) and it has nothing to do with childhood.

I suppose I identify w/New Orleans, which has embraced the original song (not the Eagles’ ripoff) as its own, too, even though I’ve never been there. It’s said it’s not xmas in NOLA until you’ve heard it. : )

Right. Rand and his father and many like him want a system in which a very rich elite control the rest of us and the latter have no chance to better themselves economically through things like collective bargaining, student loans, etc.

Greets and saluts from the unseasonably warm NYC metro area. Lots of fog and rain in the forecast today, but temperatures are supposed to get back to normal later tonight and the rest of the week will be much colder.

In the meantime, Russian authorities have released the remaining members of Pussy Riot from prison early. It’s being called amnesty, but let’s call it what it is. It’s publicity stunt for Putin to avoid having it overshadow the Sochi Olympics.

Pussy Riot should never have been imprisoned in the first place. They were arrested for engaging in political speech that opposed Putin and the Church.

That’s a suppression of political speech. It’s what free speech is supposed to protect, and contrasts with the nonsensical ravings of those defending a lunatic mind who showed his racist, homophobic, and generally bass-ackward views interview in a magazine that resulted in him losing a couple of episodes on a reality television show starring this guy.

Prison time for speaking against the government, versus a contractual matter between an employer and employee.

Yet, despite the clear differences, you’ve got people who think Russia is preferable to the US (see Dudebros and Ed Snowden), and who put Vladimir Putin on a pedestal, despite his intolerance of any dissent to how he governs). And you’ve got people who think that Duck Dynasty is a free speech issue, when it’s nothing of the sort.

Rainy, 50s, foggy here in Philly. A happy town however with Christmas approaching and the Eagles having destroyed the Bears last night.

Lots and lots of smoked turkey to eat. Stock got simmered last night and just needs strained before being ready for soup making. And the fridge is full of cooking ingredients for the next few days as well.

Lots of children running about here at work today since it’s the semi-official “bring your offspring to work” day. Also a lot of people off today so the place is half-empty and quite noisy at the same time.

Heritage posted a tweet this morning about how A&E is somehow penalizing those who hold the view of biblical marriage, calling it intolerant.

What claptrap.

Are we going to ignore that the Bible is full of polygamous marriages and relationships? Extramarital affairs are common and recommended in many situations.

But they want to talk about intolerance as though a contractual spat between A&E and Duck Dynasty is somehow a religiously motivated one.

If we’re going to play that game, how about the thousands of Hobby Lobby employees who hold religious views that allow contraception and birth control, while the employer is demanding that their employees not get contraceptive care as part of their benefits package because of the employer’s religious views in contravention of federal law (PPACA).

The Bible doesn’t give you carte blanche to act like a bigot. It doesn’t give you the right to impose your views on everyone else.

And it certainly doesn’t mean you’re entitled to your own television show after violating terms and conditions of your contract with the producers/network.

If only Robertson had quoted from the Quran, and then we’d hear from the geniuses about Heritage about how A&E is introducing Shariah Law. Really, the Bible is filled with so many contradictions. It doesn’t matter the Bible says. A&E had a problem with what their employee Robertson said and they took action. Robertson can say and feel whatever he wants about homosexuals but that doesn’t mean his bosses at A&E have to like it. Gotta love how the same people who did everything to ruin the Dixie Chicks for saying something much more mild are lining up to defend a man who believes homosexuals are like animal screwers. Great job conservatives, you really are showing your true colors here.

It doesn’t matter the authority being cited in defense of those views. It’s still indefensible.

I can cite the Bible as proof that I have the right to kill nonbelievers, but it’s still murder and indefensible.

I can cite the Bible as proof that polygamy is legal and condoned by G-d, but it’s still criminalized in the US and many other countries.

I can further cite the Bible as proof that one shouldn’t eat milk and meat at the same meal, that pork is not to be eaten, and that shellfish is off-limits, but few other than Jews (and Muslims who cite to their own religious prohibitions), follow those Biblical restrictions.

re: #192 Gus

I think there’s something there to that report. The USN was responding to the disaster, and it wasn’t entirely clear how much radiation was being put out by the crippled reactors, and TEPCO wasn’t forthcoming even with what limited information it had.

utsandiego.com

A San Diego federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit alleging that U.S. sailors were exposed to dangerous radiation during the humanitarian response to the March 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

But Judge Janis L. Sammartino left the door open for a follow-on lawsuit, and the attorney representing several sailors from the San Diego-based aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan said he intends to refile.

The judge dismissed the case Nov. 26 on jurisdictional grounds, saying that it was beyond her authority to determine whether the Japanese government had perpetrated a fraud on its American counterpart.

The defendant in the December 2012 case was Tokyo Electric Power Co., operator of Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The lawsuit argued that power company officials lied about the amount of leakage from the damaged plant, in concert with the government of Japan. It says the Navy used those reports in its own calculations about the safety of U.S. sailors in the relief effort, called Operation Tomodachi.

The carrier Reagan responded to the disaster and for more than three weeks stayed off the coast, launching aircraft to help Japanese survivors.

Two days after the disaster, the Navy repositioned the Reagan after detecting low levels of contamination in the air and on 17 aircrew members.

Sailors represented in the lawsuit were deckhands who washed down the flight deck, and performed over decontamination tasks on the ship.

Paul Garner, the Encinitas lawyer leading the case, said the sailors’ ailments include rectal bleeding and other gastrointestinal trouble, unremitting headaches, hair loss and fatigue. Some have thyroid and gallbladder cancer. Many are in their 20s.

The plaintiffs will be refiling to correct deficiencies with their original filing.

It’ll be interesting to see how this proceeds.

Also, on another note, there were so many moronic things said by Phil Robertson recently, but after the liberal in me went through the appalling things he said about gays, Japanese, the Jim Crow South, et. al, the music snob in me noted the “blacks were not singing the blues” line. Uh, what? If blacks were not singing the blues in the Mississippi Delta in Robertson’s time (actually, well before his time as well), then the entirety of American popular music over the past half century or more would not exist. Or maybe Son House and Robert Johnson were fabrications of some pop music factory in LA.

Congrats, Robertson. You’ve pissed off the rock snobs too.

Lucky you. I don’t have that to fall back on. I can’t even get 2 grown men to watch one 4 yr old while I make goodies (I’ve let him help, but some stuff requires a bit of speed) One of those is his father, who actually asked me to make pancakes for him, too. Afraid my inner dragon came out on that one.

Then they wonder why I’m gripey…and they have the nerve to complain that the tea kettle and mixer are interfering with the TV, etc. “When are you going to be finished with that?” “Is that necessary?”

What is “Elf on the Shelf”?

Apparently, a new line of elf dolls that parents tell their kids act as a spy for Santa and report back to him on whether they’ve been naughty or nice. The gimmick is you’re supposed to move him to a new spot in the house each night because he flies back to the north pole when the kids are sleeping.

I dunno, sounds creepy to me, as does the whole idea of bribing kids to behave one month of the year by using Santa Claus. I don’t have a problem with my (theoretical) kids believing in Santa, but I don’t intend to use him as a threat against bad behavior.
