In what reality is Susan Rice a war criminal?

Of course, I have OTHER things to say about Ms. Barr’s various forms of douchebaggery…and some of her absolutely pathological friends.

But that’s a story for a page I keep telling myself I should write…however…it is a story that utterly enrages me to the point where I can’t continue.

3 BusyMonster  Mon, Dec 23, 2013 7:22:52am

Roseanne is just wishing she could be relevant again.

I think Roseanne is mentally ill.

I’m going to go check out what the right wing is saying about this.

Help me suit up.

7 Ian G.  Mon, Dec 23, 2013 9:02:25am

Well, let’s see, do I defend Allen West because of his race? No? OK, what the fuck is Rosanne blathering about?

Also, calling her a “comedian” is being too kind, Gus.

Note: she deleted the tweet - that’s why it’s showing up unformatted at the top of Gus’s post.

10 Ryan King  Mon, Dec 23, 2013 9:05:45am

Nothing. The right wing hates Barr so they have to actually think about how they’ll respond to this.

Which should take a while.

Roseanne, stick to singing.

she represented a poor working class woman’s take on life, work, sex and relationships. Which was coupled with equal doses of cynicism and rueful/painful observations that kicked a lot folks out of their comfort zones. For her timeframe, there was NO ONE else like her. Based on these recent tweets, she’s probably suffering from Mel Gibson disease, as she’s gotten older, she’s turned back into her parents.

That. And also the fact that the Romans to a certain extent did not care which god you worshiped in Judea as long as the taxes were paid. To Rome a historical Jesus would be a provincial rabble rouser, not someone to be executed for failing to sacrifice to Jupiter.

My wife refers to that as “before Roseanne lost her mind.” Which happened, near as we can tell, sometime during the penultimate season of her show - the year she got pregnant.

It was actually the Maccabees who revolted because they didn’t want to sacrifice to Zeus. But that was several centuries prior to the Roman era.

I don’t know how really true that was; her father was a salesman and her mother a bookkeeper—not exactly blue collar jobs and probably a fairly decent living back then. She was raised in SLC and the entire family dabbled in the LDS church even though they were Jews. She accused them both of incest and sexual abuse much later, falsely, as I recall. There is really not a lot of fact about her marriage to Bill Pentland, her first husband; they were married for 16 yrs. She met Tom Arnold 7 yrs before the divorce from Pentland and they married 4 days after her divorce.

Like a lot of entertainers, take everything with a grain of salt. “Domestic goddess” and “working class housewife” were her schtick and that isn’t working anymore.

She really might be suffering from years from a brain injury after being hit by a car when she was 16.

Never watched or got into that show. Though I see from the Wikipedia page that it was quite popular and considered groundbreaking in a number of ways for broaching topics. I also saw the finale plot point and see it was another failed attempt at a massive fictional reveal. Doing that right is like catching lightning in a bottle. “Newhart” did it well, as did “St Elsewhere”.

From The Article, Black is Federal Judge Timothy Black…

Black wrote that “once you get married lawfully in one state, another state cannot summarily take your marriage away,” saying the right to remain married is recognized as a fundamental liberty in the U.S. Constitution.

Black referenced Ohio’s historical practice of recognizing other out-of-state marriages even though they can’t legally be performed in Ohio, such as those involving cousins or minors.

Bridget Coontz, the state’s attorney who argued against doing so, said that in the Supreme Court’s historic June decision, the justices also found that states have the right to decide for themselves whether to recognize gay marriage, and Ohio voters decided not to in 2004.

“Ohio doesn’t want Delaware or Maryland to define who is married under Ohio law,” she said. “To allow that to happen would allow one state to set the marriage policy for all others.”

Civil rights attorney Al Gerhardstein argued to Black that the case was “about love surviving death” and said that the state had no right to recognize certain out-of-state marriages and not others.

AP Article

Perhaps one of the legal talents here can tell me why the “Full Faith and Credit Clause” does’t apply to this case, among others. I would also think that Ohio would be on weak footing by recognizing, but not allowing Cousin Marriage, but applying a different policy toward SSM.

Roseanne’s show was really good when it started out, showing a believable working class family, without the glamorizing or typecasting that many other shows do. It was funny and entertaining, and dealt with stuff real families deal with.

I think Roseanne’s comedy suffered what a lot of successful artist suffer - loss of connection to the life that gave them their material. The farther she got from that lifestyle, the less she had to say as an artist, and now she’s just a rich famous person with a penchant for assholery and nobody telling her she’s not funny - at least, nobody she’ll listen to.

Honestly, the reason is that courts like to inch along and decide as little as possible on the narrowest grounds possible in these cases. The Supremes will take cases on very specific grounds and not decide anything outside of those grounds while everyone catches up with themselves.

You might want to get your reading glasses and look again. It is demonstrably false that everyone who liked one liked the other.

As to taste, we seem to go through this often enough it should be beating a dead horse, but here it is again.

If you are dismissive of everyone who differs from you then you are in an echo chamber. You do not get to dictate what I should like or dislike, and vice versa.

Hey! This article resembles me.

In today’s encore selection — from “The Unleashed Mind: Why Creative People Are Eccentric” by Shelley Carson. Many highly creative people behave in ways that are viewed as eccentric. Why? Researchers are finding that their creativity and their eccentricity are rooted in the same cause — a diminished ability to filter out nearly as much of the constant stream of information as the average person, and thus the need to process and organize this information in untypical ways. The term for this trait is “cognitive disinhibition”:

. .
“Clearly, however, not all eccentric individuals are creative. Work from our lab indicates that other cognitive factors, such as high IQ and high working memory capacity, enable some people to process and mentally manipulate extra information without being overwhelmed by it. Through a series of studies, we have, in fact, shown that a combination of lower cognitive inhibition and higher IQ is associated with higher scores on a variety of creativity measures. The shared vulnerability model suggests that at least a subgroup of highly creative individuals may share some (but not all) biological vulnerability factors with individuals who suffer from psychotic illnesses, such as schizophrenia. This vulnerability may allow the highly creative person access to ideas and thoughts that are inaccessible to those of us with less porous mental filters.”

The next step is for Gov. Herbert to nullify the ruling, announce that the judge has no jurisdiction over such matters in Utah, and order every clerk to cease and desist issuance of same-sex ‘marriage’ certificates.

If he doesn’t do exactly what I said above, then Utah is no longer a sovereign state of the Republic.

Appeals Court Upholds Decision Blocking Wisconsin Admitting Privileges Law

Shortly after anti-choice lawmakers in the state introduced and passed the measure, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the ACLU of Wisconsin, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), and Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin sued, arguing the law violated constitutional equal protection guarantees by singling out abortion providers and their patients for restrictions not imposed on other medical practices. A federal judge agreed and blocked the law from taking effect. Friday’s decision by the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals affirms that lower court decision.

Salon is staking out a unique position on the daily outrages….
Justine Sacco’s aftermath: The cost of Twitter outrage

As I watched the online response to Justine Sacco’s tweet, I thought of Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery,” first published in 1948 but quite prescient. In a village there is a ritual that has gone largely unquestioned for generations. There is a box and in the box are slips of paper. Each year, the heads of each family draw slips of paper. One will be marked and then the members of that person’s family draw slips again. Whoever selects the slip with a black mark is the sacrifice. Everyone takes up stones and sets upon the unlucky victim. Every citizen is complicit in the murder of someone who, just moments before he or she was chosen, was a friend, a neighbor, a loved one.

Justine Sacco was not sacrificed. Her life will go on. We will likely never know if she learned anything from this unfortunate affair. In truth, I don’t worry so much about her. Instead, I worry for those of us who were complicit in her spectacularly rapid fall from grace. I worry about how comfortable we were holding the stones of outrage in the palms of our hands and the price we paid for that comfort.

The syndication rights to her 9 year show (IIUC, she controls the rights) have to be worth between 200 - 500 million.

This times a 1000. Really, I am sorry but this wasn’t someone who tweeted something stupid at random. No, this is someone who used their real name with their real name and title of the large firm they worked at and a communications director no less. Someone who chose to tweet unbelievably racist insensitive language. Would we even be having the conversation of feeling bad for her if Justine Sacco had made some crack about the Holocaust, 9-11, or something like that? She’s entitled to a second chance of course but she deserved to be fired and deserved the firestorm of criticism she got and I resent the author making people’s views on these issues just to be partisan. I had no problem with MSNBC dismissing Bashir for the same reasons I had no problem with A&E suspending Robertson. Sorry, if you put yourself in the spotlight as a representative of a company like MSNBC or A&E and say something offensive, don’t be surprised if your employer takes exception to ti.

Salon, (or Roxane Gay), I think this was covered very well, once we knew who Justine Sacco actually is:

“We can excoriate Justine Sacco but we need to interrogate white privilege and the relative comfort Sacco felt in demonstrating such poor judgment. It seemingly did not cross her mind that it would be inappropriate to make that joke in such a public forum. We also need interrogate the corporate culture where an attitude like Sacco’s was clearly not a deterrent to her success. As Anil Dash noted on Twitter, “That @Justine Sacco is offensive is obvious. The bigger problem is that her mindset is no barrier to corporate success.”

I don’t feel even a twinge of remorse for castigating her, even if don’t tweet, but I’m glad others saw fit to do it and feel no guilt, either.

What she tweeted was vile and came from her utter cluelessness as a member of the white privileged billionaire class.

re: #268 SidewaysQuark

Assuming you were serious in that question… no, Salon is suggesting corporations need hiring practices so people with those mindsets aren’t the ones they put in charge.

Look, the reality is that a lot of people in business ‘echo the boss’. If in doubt as to what’s going to be permitted, look at what your boss does.

And just as bad, a boss like that tends shrug at someone below them doing this (unless it splashes on them).

The end result is that the attitude permeates the company.

So hiring agents should strive to prevent people who hold those attitudes from being in positions of authority.

I think the problem is that people’s personal views are undetectable to employers, especially if those views may be unpopular. I’ve worked for jobs where it was no secret that the employer did not want employees to vote for a certain party or support certain policies. He was very open about that, employees with different views just learned to keep quiet on certain issues.

Shit, until very recently it was tough for other Christians to to co-exist with each other. Catholic versus Anglican, Catholic versus Lutheran, etc. And on the subject of Spain, let’s not forget that the very Russian Orthodox, Russian Empire was one of the most antisemitic places before Nazi Germany.

I can certainly recall “The Troubles” in my lifetime.

Her fatal flaw was not being racist. She was fired because her only reason for worklife existence was to >make her corporation look good, and she failed at that spectacularly, (unless she was fired).

in a way, she did make her company look good. By their quick action in not allowing a person who was idiotic enough to state something blatantly racist on a public forum to continue to work for them. Especially not someone who worked in their PR department. Although I guess there’s no way to know about someone’s capacity to state something like that until they do it.

Equating women’s courage with men’s genitals doesn’t do a fucking thing for this feminist.

re: #292 Dr Lizardo

I can certainly recall “The Troubles” in my lifetime.

And I’m old enough to remember racially segregated Catholic schools in Buffalo, NY.

I’m also old enough to see the struggles minorities and women went through from the time the EEOC and Title VII were established as law in the 1960s, and changes in the demographic makeup in occupations, some of which still have a long way to go.

I left the white collar work force in the late ’90s, and believe me, there was a long way to go in minority hiring even among clerical staff in the south where I worked. Even in a couple of short stints working for banks, only a handful of white women and even fewer minorities held any executive positions, most being “vice-presidents”—it’s typically a mid-managerial level position, like branch mgr, and so forth. Banks typically have many “vice presidents”.

I don’t have much reason to think it’s changed all that much in certain areas, and certainly not in the higher executive ranks of an organization, nor in the board rooms.

Registered to this site last night, after several weeks of reading some of the articles and comments. Seemed like a good choice for me as my politics and ideas about religion have changed considerably. I have to admit upfront that I am not very up to date on many of the recent current events. I started looking into some of the white supremacy and christian identity websites when I started noticing a rise in right wing extremism among my own family and friends and was in disbelief. I could not believe how many of them rationalized it all away or just ignored it and directed their anger at me. I’ve always voted Republican, and for the first time, went and changed my registration to democrat, even though I don’t agree with everything straight down the line. I cannot intellectually go along with Christianity anymore either, which has gotten me shunned and told I’m working for satan. At some point it was like a switch got flipped in my brain and saw everything differently. Sorry so long. I was advised on the first post I made that I should go to the top of page and introduce myself. Thanks to those who took the time to read this.

Exactly. Didn’t he also blackmail people to take down their photos (even as he probably retained them off-site)? As I recall, he charged certain amts to do certain things.

Unfortunately, the law isn’t keeping up with cyber crime or passing enough legislation to prevent it, and as long as that’s the case, the criminals will continue to have the upper hand online.

Yes, yes he did. per wiki. He’s also not some fringe kook in Virginia GOP circles seeing as he very nearly won the nomination for senate against former governor Gilmore and no Palin didn’t say anything. She was too busy equating ACA to death panels to comment. The italics are his words to clarify.
“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children… In the Old Testament, the first born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There’s a special punishment Christians would suggest.[21]”

I never did like Roseanne Barr either. I always thought that there was too much anger and bitterness in her humor to be enjoyable. She could be crass and coarse without bringing any insights other than “Look at me”.

It’s plain simple genetics. What I read said that even at the brain level we have similar shaped brains to our parents. The thought is that’s part of why we grow up to be like them.

Was at a family wedding a few weeks back. My cousin was standing next to her mother. It was from my perspective like looking at 20-30 year in the future mirror for my cousin. I’ve told a few family members over the years how they are looking more like a parent as they age.

The response is always interesting. Some like to hear that some not so much. I either get a thank you and big grin or the you’re a jerk look with no response.
